1. What is the Legion of Super-Heroes?

The Legion of Super-Heroes first appeared in ADVENTURE COMICS #247, cover-dated April, 1958. In a Superboy story, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Boy travel into the past to offer Superboy membership in their super-hero club known as the Legion of Super- Heroes. Their appearance was intended to be a one-shot story, however fan reaction to the team was positive, and they made many guest appearances in various Superman titles until finally landing an ongoing series in ADVENTURE COMICS#300.

2. Where can I read stories about the Legion of Super-Heroes?

The Leagion currently appears in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V7). Certain characters alo appear in a sister title LEGION LOST.

3. Didn't the Legion titles reboot?

Yes. The Legion titles underwent a reboot as part of the 1994 DC Comics crossover event entitled ZERO HOUR. As a consequence of the events in ZERO HOUR, the history of the Legion of Super-Heroes was erased. In LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V4) #0, Legion history was restarted from scratch.
10 years later a second reboot has occurred in TEEN TITANS #16 and the TEEN TITANS/THE LEGION SPECIAL. The new reality was previewed in the latter by the creative team, Mark Waid and Barry Kitson.
The "original" Legion has "reappeared", debuting in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (V2) #8,(Though their existence was first revealed in ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #10).

4. So which issues take place in what "reality"?

Version 1 of the Legion make major appearances in ADVENTURE COMICS #247, 267, 282, 290, 293, ACTION COMICS #267, 276, 287, 289, SUPERBOY #86, 89, 98 and SUPERMAN #147 before starting a lengthy run in ADVENTURE COMICS from #300 through to #380. They then appeared as backups in ACTION COMICS #377 to #392.
Six months later, they started an series of irregular backups in SUPERBOY #172, 173, 176, 183, 184, 188, 190, 191, 193 and 195 before becoming the main feature in #197. The title eventually changed in #231 to SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, then just LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES at #259. In August 1984, along with Teen Titans, LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V3) #1 appeared as a direct market Baxter edition and the regular title became TALES OF LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, featuring original stories from #314-#325. From #326 onwards it reprinted the Baxter stories.
V3 was cancelled in 1988 at #63 to make way for LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V4), which was eventually joined by a companion title, LEGIONNAIRES. Version 1 of the Legion ended during Zero Hour, the last issues of each title being #61 and #18, respectively.

Version 2 of the Legion starts in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #0 and LEGIONNAIRES #0 with a new origin. LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES(V4) #62 to #125 and LEGIONNAIRES #19 to #81 continue the stories of the Legion after the reboot. The story then continued in LEGION LOST #1-#12 and LEGION WORLDS #1-#6, before continuing in THE LEGION #1-#38, the finale is a 2 part crossover appearing in TEEN TITANS #16 and TEEN TITANS/THE LEGION SPECIAL. They are scheduled to return inLEGION OF THREE WORLDS

Version 3 appears in a 7 page preview in the TEEN TITANS/THE LEGION SPECIAL and continued in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES(V5) #1-#50.

Version 4 had their existence revealed in ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #10. Karate Kid, disguised as Trident, appeared inJUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (V2) #1 and Starman appeared in JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA (V3) #1. The Legion itself then appeared in the "Lightning Saga", running throughJUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (V2) #8-10 & JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA (V3) #5-6. Karate Kid then went on to appear in COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS, with Una, one of Triplicate Girl's bodies, while Superman visited the 31st Century in ACTION COMICS #858-863. They then appeared, with the Reboot and Threeboot versions of the team in LEGION OF THREE WORLDS. They currently appear in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V7) & LEGION LOST.

6. What the heck do some of the terms that Legion fans use mean?

Some common terms used about the Legion:

THE ADVENTURE LEGION- Term used to describe the Silver Age Legion appearing in Adventure Comics.

ADULT LEGION- The Legion, in their early days, occasionally fought an adult Legion of Super-Villains, supposedly from their own future. This future was revealed briefly in Action Comics #289 when Superman visited the Adult Legion. But when the term is used it generally refers to Jim Shooter’s 2 part story in Adventure Comics #354 and #355. This story foreshadowed much of the Legions future, who would marry, who would die, etc. Many of this foreshadowing was used over the years until LOSH (V3) #300. Shadow Lass, or Shadow Woman as she became in that issue, was fated to die defending the Science Asteroid. Instead, she survived when the Khunds attacked the Asteroid. Any anomaly was explained away by alternate realities of the Legion, which Ferro Lads brother, Douglas viewed throughout the issue, eventually escaping to one.

THE DISCO LEGION- Name given by many fans to the Legion period appearing during the 70's. The term is a humorous reference to the skimpy redesigned outfits given to the Legion members by Dave Cockrum and Mike Grell.

PRE-CRISIS/POST-CRISIS- The Crisis divide happened between issues #18 and #19 of Legion of Super-Heroes (V3), though it would take a few issues to eradicate Supergirl from history. This would be the only major effect.

At the time.

POCKET UNIVERSE- The Superman Revamp by John Byrne revealed that Clark Kent was never Superboy, the keystone of Legion Lore. So it was revealed in the Cosmic Boy mini-series, which tied into the Legends mini somewhat, that history had been changed. Cosmic Boy finds that it has something to do with the Time Trapper and warns the Legion in Legion of Super-Heroes(V3) #36. In issues #37 and #38, it’s revealed that during the Crisis, The Trapper “trapped” a pocket of time from the Pre-Crisis Universe. One containing an Earth with Superboy living in Smallville. Whenever The Legion had traveled back in time before Cosmic Boys sojourn, they were in fact entering this “Pocket Universe” rather than the actual 20th Century. The whole thing was a trap that would collapse this “Universe” and killing the Legion. Superboy, who died as a result, saved the Legion, however. This way, Superboy was shown to have always been a member of the Legion, as well as the Pocket Universe counterparts of Lana Lang, Pete Ross and Jimmy Olsen.

5 YEAR GAP/THE GAP/V4- When Keith Giffen took over as writer of the Legion after Paul Levitz had “retired”. He decided he wanted to take the Legion in a new direction and leave Levitz’s Legion as is. So V3 was cancelled and a new volume of Legion of Super-Heroes started at #1. The first page was one panel saying “FIVE YEARS LATER”. And the story continued showing that the Legion had disbanded in that time. Generally the stories in the time between #1 and Zero Hour and the events that happened off panel between the two series, are referred to by the above expressions.

MORDRUVERSE/GLORITHVERSE - When V4 of the Legion started, a edict came from the Superman office that all ties to the Superman mythos should be ended. To accommodate this, A story was written in issues #4 and #5 where Mon-El, Lar Gand, fights the Time Trapper and wipes him from existence as well as the Pocket Universe. It’s revealed that the Trapper was a counterpoint to the rise of Mordru, one of the Legions greatest foes. Because the Trapper and his Superboy, the inspiration of the Legion, ceased to exist, The Legion never came to be and Mordru ruled all. This alternate reality is the "Mordruverse". With the help of some “Legion members”, Glorith, a minor flunky of the Trapper from an early story, replaced the Trapper in the timestream. The Universe was restored, but now the inspiration of the Legion was Lar Gand, renamed Valor. Later, Mike Carlin, then editor of the Superman titles, realised that this now invalidated the new Supergirl’s origin and the Pocket Universes existence was hastily replaced in LOSH V4 #14 & Adventures of Superman #478. Though now Superboy had only met and became a member of the Legion a few weeks before the Pocket Universe Saga. The Timeline was still changed with Glorith being the Time Trapper throughout the Legions history. This reality is the "Glorithverse".

TMK- Abbreviation used for the initial V4 creative team. Tom & Mary Bierbaum, Keith Giffen.

SW6 LEGION- In issue #21 of V4 some mysterious new characters appeared. They would eventually be revealed in Issue #24 as youthful counterparts of the now Adult Legion. At first thought to be Dominator clones of the Legion, taken from their “Adventure Comic” days, they eventually split off into their own title, “Legionnaires”. When first discovered, the Dominators, who had been mind-wiping groups of super humans to build an army, had categorized them as Batch SW6.

END OF AN ERA- Six issue tie in to Zero Hour tying up the loose ends of the “original” Legion and wiping them from existence in preparation for the Reboot.

The story appeared in Legion of Super-Heroes (V4) #60-#61, Valor #22-#23 and Legionnaires #17-#18.

REBOOT/PRE-BOOT/POST-BOOT- With Legion of Super-Heroes (V4) #0 and Legionnaires #0 the timeline rebooted from the start with these issues showing the formation of the Legion. The stories before are referred to as the PRE-BOOT Legion, those from the zero issues onwards as the POST-BOOT Legion.

ARCHIE LEGION- Name some fans give to the Post-Boot Legion, due to the more "cartoony" artwork that was used at the time.

DnA LEGION- Abbreviation standing for Dan and Andy, when talking about the writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning run.

THREEBOOT- Term describing the second Legion reboot as created by Waid/Kitson.

RETROBOOT LEGION- Term describing the new version of the Pre-Crisis Legion written by Geoff Johns and Paul Levitz.

7. Tell me more about the Legion's publishing history.

The Legion of Super-Heroes first appeared in a Superboy story in Adventure Comics #247, written by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. Originally the story was just meant to be a one shot, but it was so well received that the team earned a return, though that would not happen for another twenty issues, in Adventure Comics #267. They would then make guest appearances across the range of Superman titles for the next four years, most stories written by Jerry Siegel. Eventually the team earned a regular “Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes” slot in Adventure Comics from #300 onwards. The first few stories were also by Siegel, then Edmund Hamilton, art was by John Forte, occasionally helped by Jim Mooney and George Papp. Within a year their adventures became book length and the run would last 80 issues. Forte died in 1965 and was replaced by Curt Swan on art. Then, in Issue #346, Jim Shooter, who was only 13 years old at the time, joined him as the regular writer. In 1969, the editor of the Superman range, Mort Weisinger was about to retire and didn’t wish to increase his workload. The powers that be wanted to give Supergirl her own title and, as a compromise, switched Supergirl, who was only appearing as a 10 page back up feature in Action Comics, with the Legion. They appeared for sixteen issues, still written by Shooter, with art by Win Mortimer, who had replaced Swan. Shooter then left comics, as he was no longer making enough money writing. E. Nelson Bridwell and another newcomer, Cary Bates, replaced him, but the series quietly died away due to the truncated format.

Or so DC thought.

In the March 1971 issue of Superboy, #172, The Legion appeared in a back up story. More irregular appearances followed, written by Bates and Bridwell with art by George Tuska, and then Dave Cockrum. A four issue reprint series, Legion of Super-Heroes(V1) was tried. Legion Fandom coalesced and helped the back up to become the main feature. With Superboy #197 The Legion, by Bates and Cockrum, shared stories and equal billing with Superboy, though the change wouldn’t be reflected in the indices until Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #231. The title gained great popularity thanks to various creators such as a returned Jim Shooter, Mike Grell, Paul Levitz, Jim Starlin, Jim Sherman, Gerry Conway and Joe Staton. In issue #259 the title was changed to just Legion of Super-Heroes(V2). The title continued along, written and drawn by Conway, Staton, Jimmy Janes, Roy Thomas, Pat Broderick, Keith Giffen and a returned Paul Levitz, but it wasn't until Issue #290 and the start of the ‘Great Darkness Saga”, by Giffen and Levitz, that the Legion became one of DC’s biggest sellers.

Big enough so that, in 1984, the Legion, as well as New Teen Titans, was picked to become a Direct Only Baxter Series, by Levitz and Giffen. (V2) #311 became Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes, which would still be sold on newsstands and have original stories for the first twelve issues by Levitz, Mindy Newell, Terry Shoemaker and Dan Jurgens. It then start reprinting the stories first published in Legion of Super-Heroes(V3) from #326 onwards. V3 would continue for 63 issues with art by Giffen, Steve Lightle and Greg Laroque and Giffen again, after which, Paul Levitz decided to retire as writer. Keith Giffen, with the help of Tom and Mary Bierbaum, would take over.
Giffen wanted a clean break from Levitz’s stories so a new series started, Legion of Super-Heroes(V4) with the words “Five Years Later” and the Legion were now in their mid-Thirties. Giffen drew the first 24 issues and then handed the art chores over to Jason Pearson. After 38 issues, the Bierbaums were writing solo and art was handled by Stuart Immomen. The series was joined in April 93 by a sister title called Legionnaires, written by the Bierbaums, with art by Chris Sprouse, Adam Hughes and Chris Gardner, which starred younger versions of the Legion. By this time Tom McCraw was co writing the parent title, before becoming the solo writer from #51 onwards. Eventually, it was decided that the Legion had become too confusing and top heavy with continuity. The title would be revamped as part of DC’s 94 event, Zero Hour. In End of an Era the Legion was wiped from existence and rebooted in two zero issues of the regular titles, with Mark Waid writing Legionnaires and co writing V4 with McCraw.

The team started from scratch and the two titles, continued written and drawn by McCraw, Waid, Tom Peyer, Lee Moder, Jeffrey and Philip Moy, Roger Stern, Jason Armstrong and Scott Kolins until both titles were cancelled after the creative team of Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Olivier Coipel took over.

At the end of both series some members were thrown through a rift and were believed dead by the rest of the team. Their adventures appeared in the 12 issue mini-series, Legion Lost, illustrated by Coipel. After that appeared a 6 issue mini series, Legion Worlds, showing that the Legion had been disbanded and catching up with the various other members. The mini series was drawn by various creators, then the “lost” members eventually returned to Earth in a new series, The Legion, which lasted 38 issues and was written and drawn by Abnett, Lanning, Coipel, Kev Walker, Chris Batista, Steve Lightle, Gail Simone and Dan Jurgens, but due to sales was cancelled after 38 issues and restarted as Legion of Super-Heroes(V5), with the creative team of Mark Waid & Barry Kitson. After 30 issues they left, replaced, for a short stint, by Tony Bedard & Dennis Calero. With Issue #37, Jim Shooter has taken over as regular writer, art by Francis Manapul.

Meanwhile, in ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #10, a posterof Superman's Fortress of Solitude revealed a display of statues in his "trophy room".Statues of the original, Pre-Crisis Legion of Super-Heroes.A Starman appeared in JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA (V3) #1, a madman who appeared to have knowledge of the original Star Boy. In issue #4 he was revealed to be the "original" Thom Kallor, from the future via the earth of shown in the KINGDOM COME mini-series. Over in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (V2) #1, a reformed Justice League were battling a group of villains, mind controlled by Solomon Grundy. One of the captured villains, Trident, was revealed, in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (V2) #7, to be Val Armorr, Karate Kid. But not the same Karate Kid as in the latest Legion title, but the "original". These storylines then lead into the "Lightning Saga" crossover in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (V2) #8-10 & JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA (V3) #5-6, which revealed that Superman had been a member of the Legion as a boy. A Legion similar to, but not the same as, the Pre-Crisis Legion. After the events in the Lightning Saga, Karate Kid went on to appear in COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS, with Una, one of Triplicate Girl's bodies & Starman remained with the JSA. Superman then visited the 31st Century, reuniting with "his" Legion in ACTION COMICS #858-863.

The two current versions of the Legion, plus the Post-Boot Legion teamed up in FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS which lead into the "Original" Legion appearing in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (V6) & ADVENTURE COMICS.

8. I'm interested in knowing a little more about the characters and their history, is there any good reference I can check out?

Preboot there's some handy back issues you can track down. Pre-Crisis there is an issue of "The Amazing World of DC Comics", #9 in fact which gives you comprehensive information about the Legion up to the beginning of Mike Grell's run in the 70's. Though this issue is expensive and very hard to find.

Mayfair Games brought out 3 Volumes based on The Legion for the DC role-playing game. They're actually quite good for Legion info as Paul Levitz wrote the first volume and consulted on the second. The third covered V4 and was written by Tom and Mary Bierbaum and is packed full of info that never made it into the comic and includes a timeline of the "The Gap". Unfortunately they are out of print but the occasional second hand edition surfaces at Amazon.

Post-Crisis, there is an excellent 7 issue series of "Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes", which was released for the 30th anniversary of the Legion. The only quibble with it is that some information is erroneous when explaining away inconsistencies in characters histories, thanks to Crisis.

Post-Boot, it's worth tracking down the three "Secret Files & Origins" DC released.

For online help there's an excellent Legion Help File (http://omega.animefringe.com/lshhlp/) you can download, written by Chaim Kellar, that covers everything up to the Legion Lost mini series.

Also Michael Kooiman's Legion Chronology (http://www.mykey3000.com/cosmicteams/legion/index.html) is also great.

And for all your Legion online needs, pretty much every link to a Legion site can be found at the Legion of Super-Links (http://www.legiononline.net/links.html)

a hypertime anomoly?

or is the current legion like the old legion and just another possible future?

Possibly Hypertime.

The future, by this time, has been shown to be incredibly fluid. But, at this time, we have no way of knowing.

There are 12 volumes of the Legion Archives which collects all the Silver Age stories, as well as the Dave Cockrum and Mike Grell runs.

The only TPB's are:

I found back issues were relatively inexpensive, apart from one or two of them. A lot of reprints appeared in Adventure Comics and Blue Ribbon Digests which are, surprisingly, more expensive than the real thing. :)

There were some connections between the two. Several of the L.E.G.I.O.N. members were ancestors of Legion members, two L.E.G.I.O.N.aires were possessed by the Emerald Eye for awhile...There's a few other things, but I'd need to go look through the issues and tell you....Oh yeah! Well originally the names were created in the late 50's/early 60's. Mark Waid has explained the names being based upon those of the heroes of the 21st century, eg. Superboy, Wonder Girl, etc.

There was also the inference that RJ Brande was in fact 'The Durlan' from L.E.G.I.O.N., and that he created the LSH in order to "re-pay" a debt he felt he owed to Virl Dox.

In the twilight issues of L.E.G.I.O.N. it was revealed that Phase was actually Enya Wazzo (Tinya's cousin).

Okay, I got back into comics in the last year. I am aware of the newest crisis and that some elements of the multi-verse is back. I am also aware that the newest Superman continuity may be different than what we've had since 1987/88 and the restart coming from the first crisis. However, I really liked one element from the late 80s restart: Superman developed his powers slowly and didn't show himself to the world until he was an adult. Now, I see that the latest JSA has a Superman that knows the Legion of Superheroes. He makes references to having been with them as Superboy. How is that coming in?

Paul Newell

We don't really know yet. There was hints sprinkled throughout some titles that Superman may have been a member of the Pre-Crisis Legion again, but the reveal happened in the JLA/JSA crossover.

That's all we know at this point.

I've just started getting into the Legion of Superheroes over the past year due to Supergirl joining up and the JLA/JSA crossover. Obviously the two Legions are different, that's fine as long as something eventually explains stuff.

But anyways, I've read all 31 issues of the current series of LSH which I really liked, I catch the cartoon from time to time, read up on Wiki about them, but I wanted to know and read more comics about the previous version of the Legion that everything is built from. So I bought volume one of the DC Archive's Legion of Super-heroes. Now what I'm about to say is just my opinion and I don't want to insult anyone, but I found that volume very corny. I enjoyed the Mon-El story, but it and everything else was just so campy. I like now knowing how the first issues started and what the team was like then, but when do the stories get more serious? At first, all these seemed to be stories about the LSH playing tricks on Superboy and Supergirl. Eventually the stories developed into more origin type stories of other leaguers, but the cheesy dialog continued. I've been reading comics for 15-20 years, but never really looked at the golden and silver age stuff. Is this what it was like? I really want to read more LSH stuff from the other DC Archives, but they are so expensive for what I consider really childish stories. When do they start getting a little more serious?

Like I said, I don't mean to insult anyone, that's just how I viewed the original LSH comics. But I think the characters today are really cool and I want to read more comics about them, but not stories like I found in the first volume of DC's LSH Archives. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Paul Newell

Heh. those issues are a product of their time. :)

You'll find the first 4 or so Archives the same....Though a lot of Legion Lore is still introduced in those stories. The fifth archive gets more serious, with the Jim Shooter run when he brought a bit more of a Marvel touch to the stories. You'll still get some of the "childish" Silver-Age elements mixed in, however.

The 70's stories begin in Archives 10 through to Twelve. Apart from that, you should try and track down a copy of the Great Darkness Saga and the "follow up" volume which'll be released soon. Other than that, most of the original issues can be picked up cheap....That's what I did and I never regretted it. :)

Great thread Paul, stumbled on it while trying to work out exactly what version of the LOSH i had been reading as a kid.

The Legion that i grew up with was the Levitz/Lightle/LaRoque era from beginning up til Crisis. Not the Baxter stuff, but the Tales of the Legion of Super Heroes reprints.

I'd happily bring that back. I have a fondness for those stories that exceeds most of the other comics i've read over the years. Some of the interplay between the characters was superb. So many different personalities and stories to bounce off of each other, and it was all written so naturally.

I just brought the LOSH trade Teenage Rebellion by Waid and Kitson.
I really liked it.
However, I'm brand new to the Legion, and not really too keen to go read other versions at the moment, or any of this crossover business DC has a lot of at the moment..
Is this the official start of this LOSH (which I think is a yes from the FAQ), or is there other stuff I'm supposed to know?
(I get the vibe there are some 'in' references for long time readers, but I can follow it all fine, so I'm just wondering).
Is this a hard reboot (no continuity from before) or a soft one (some of it happened before etc)

Also, what's with Supergirl and the Legion Of Superheroes book?
Is that this Legion?
If so, at what point does it kick in? (ie at which point should I be picking up those trades).

Finally, is this series considered good by LOSH standards?
I think it's really good, so I'm intrigued if people think there are better written LOSH books out there.

Sorry it took so long Funky, I was in Tassie.

Yep. Brand new start. You don't need to read any other versions, it was a total reboot. A few nods to old continuity, but nothing you need to worry about.

They changed the name of the regular title when OYL started. Issues 1 - 15 are collected in the first two trades. S&TLOSH #16 to whatever continues in trade 3 onwards.

That's an INCREDIBLY curly question when it comes to Legion fans. Very few enjoy all era's. Every era has its hardcore fans, (Including this version). You'll never get a satisfactory answer from any of them.

Except me. :)

There are better Legion era's out there, such as the Levitz/Giffen run, but I think this one is pretty good.

I've never really followed The Legion before, but with all the good im hearing about Shooters return I was thinking of getting into it. Because I'm new to the series I had a few questions, please forgive me if these are well known:

1.) It is my understanding that the Legion is from the 31st century of the DC universe. Is it ever explained or mentioned what becomes of well known Heroes or their legacy? I know a bit about Flash's history and how it connects with the future, as well as XS(which i guess has been retconned away now?), but I know nothing of what happens with Superman or Batman.

2.) Are there still Green Lanterns in the 31's century; if so what role do they play?

3.) Would you recommend picking up old TPB's, or just jump right into Shooters run?

4.) Is the "Threeboot" Legion the same as the Legion in Shooters run, or does no one know yet? I've heard they don't seem to be the same and that there is a different Legion in the current Superman storylines.

Thanks in advance to anything who can help me out with these.

In the threeboot, no. But previous versions of the Legion have featured descendants of heroes. The Pre-Crisis Legion in particular.

2.) Are there still Green Lanterns in the 31's century; if so what role do they play?
We haven't seen any in the Threeboot, but the reboot had only one, Kyle Rayner's descendant. The original Legion still had the Corp existing but they were banned from operating in United Planets territory.

3.) Would you recommend picking up old TPB's, or just jump right into Shooters run?
Just jump straight in is my recommendation. If you want, the previous issues have been traded...But I do recommend searching out some of the earlier trades. To get a feel for the earlier versions of the team. In particular the Great Darkness Saga.

4.) Is the "Threeboot" Legion the same as the Legion in Shooters run, or does no one know yet? I've heard they don't seem to be the same and that there is a different Legion in the current Superman storylines.
Shooter is writing the Threeboot Legion. The Lightning Saga Legion, appearing in Action Comics, is a "New Earth" version of the original Legion.

The original Legion continuity also had Vidar, the Green Lantern who eventually became the criminal Universo; his son, Rond Vidar, who took up his ring after his fall from grace; and Celeste McCauley(Rockfish), who ended up housing the last of the Oan Green Lantern energy, becoming the living energy being Neon.

There's also the Emerald Eye of Ekron in all three "boots", which has been shown in 52 to be the eye of a giant Green Lantern from our time.

In the pre-crisis Legion, it has been established that the Green Lantern for the sector in which the Legion operates is a hero named Xenofobe (kinda ironic given the multitude of shapes and sizes that make up the GL Corps).

Thanks for all the info guys. I picked up the first two issues of the new Legion arch, the other day. Although I don't know much about the history of the characters or their world, I'm really enjoying the characters, the art and the direction of the story. I hope sometime in the future they do review some of the back history of the events that lead to this legion future, and maybe have some appearance by the descendants of other well known heroes.

All the Green Lantern stuff sounds pretty interesting, and it makes a lot of sence that out of all the current DC Heroes, the Green Lanterns would be around in some form. All the Green Lantern stuff sounds pretty interesting, and it makes a lot of sence that out of all the current DC Heroes, the Green Lanterns would be around in some form. I would love to see the Corps of the 31'st century. Do they ever explain why they were banned from operating in United Planets territory?
They do. A rogue Green Lantern tried to view the beginning of time at the Time Institute and due to his actuions and the problems caused, Green Lanterns were banned from UP space.

I might be trying out the Shooter run soon, even though (from what I understand), it doesn't mesh with the Legion appearing in the current run of Action Comics.

Anyone in the DC Multiverse who wants to look at the beginning of time always gets in trouble, and for good reason! Just look at Krona, that mustachioed, egg-loving bastard.

I bought the Supergirl & the Legion of Superheroes collection "Adult Education" that features Big City from issue #20. I'm interested in giant women, and I write stories about them. I've had one of them published in a British science fiction mag about a year ago.

I'd like to know if there are any other issues that feature Big City, or giantesses from Big City.

Big City is a new wrinkle in the Legion mythos. In all his previous incarnations, Colossal Boy was a normal human who gained the ability to grow. His being one of a race of normally giant-sized beings who gained the ability to shrink is something Waid made up for the three-boot, just like Triplicate Girl is now apparently just one of millions of clones generated from one original being (who doesn't remember anything prior to waking up on a devastated planet), rather than a member of an entire race that had the power to triplicate. Still not sure how I feel about those changes, but I admit that they do provide hooks that someday down the road somebody could base an interesting storyline on...

I apologize if this has been asked and answered. I read through this thread but I didn't see it:

The three "Showcase" LoSH volumes (black/white ones) -- do they reprint every LoSH appearence chronologically? Are there some stories missing (through volume three)? They looked pretty comprehensive, but I wasn't sure.

I kind of think that there are some minor appearances that they leave out. But since the Showcases/Archives are my primary sources for knowing about stuff like that, I can't give you any concrete information about it.

I want to start reading the legendary Levitz (and eventually Giffen) run on Legion, and I can't really get a firm grasp of when Levitz actually began. Where should I start? I have no qualms with collecting lots and lots of single issues, I'm just not sure what issues should be read, or if jumping on at #1 is enough to fully appreciate the Legion.

Matthew E

Start with #284, and don't forget to get that first Annual.

(Note: the run you're talking about, the one in the '80s with Giffen and Great Darkness and stuff, is actually his second run. He also wrote some Legion comics in the '70s with Jim Sherman and Joe Staton and I think Mike Grell on art; this would have been around #240; not sure of the exact issues, but he certainly did the Earthwar saga from #241-245.)

I'm behind on my comic reading, I get the tpbs as I can afford them, and haven't read anything with the newest Legion yet ( but I am looking forward to reading them soon!).
I am about to start reading the 5 Year Later Legion issues I got on ebay ( and the Showcase book, I hope they keep putting those out), which as I understand is out of continuity now. I know during that time Element Lad's girlfriend was revealed to be taking a sex change drug and reverted to being a male, but EL prefered things that way so it worked out, and during that same era Lightning Lass and Violet were a couple. So that era of the Legion was very gay positive, but since the new Legion is from just before 5 years later, where does that leave our gay Legioners? Has there been anything mentioned about that? What about EL's gf/bf? She should still be transexual since the two timelines are divergent or whatever. Right?
I'm just curious and impatient to find these little details out.
Thanks for any info!

I just read the Lightning Saga and really enjoyed it except for one major problem I can't figure out.

How did the Legion members end up "trapped" with no memories? I get they had mental blocks but how did they come to the places they were found? What decided where they would end up? Also the member who ignites the memories is Starman who only has his memory because of his mental problems correct? If he wasn't meant to take the trip and a different Legionnaire went who would have started the cycle to remember the mission? They were on a tight schedule in regards to the storm so it's not like they had time to just have their memories come back.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or has been explained or if I missed it somewhere.

Thanks.

witchboy: For Lightning Lass and Shrinking Violet, Paul Levitz had actually planted the seeds for their relationship during his run, which took place well before Five Years Later. It's possible that he could pick up on that again. This winter's Legion Annual features those two characters, so we should get some idea then how he's going to handle that. Certainly the way they were portrayed in last month's LSHv6 #6 suggests that they're more than friends.

As for Element Lad's girlfriend Shvaughn Erin, the idea that she was really Sean Erin was only ever shown in stuff that's now out of continuity. And there were other continuity shenanigans going on in the Five Years Later comics such that it can be argued that Shvaughn in this reality is strictly a woman. I expect that that's what Levitz is going to do, assuming he even decides to use Shvaughn as a character.

TomB: It's not entirely clear why they were trapped and scattered and mindwiped. I think there was some idea that the Time Trapper was responsible. I guess the "Lightning Lad" codeword was one of Brainiac 5's safeguards or something, but it didn't need Starman to do it; anybody who knew the password (in Interlac!) could have said it. A lot of what happened in that story was never sufficiently explained.

Whatever happened to SENSOR GIRL (AKA PRINCESS PROJECTRA)? That was another one of my favorite Legion epics. After Karate Kid was killed, Projectra found that her life was empty. She surrendered her throne and wanted to rejoin the Legion. I can't remember which female Legionaire helped her, but one heroine convinced her to take on another identity. The "Who is Sensor Girl?" story went on for about a year until the Emerald Empress exposed her secret!

It was a great time to be a Legion fan but I stopped reading it after the MAGIC WARS ended and when Keith Giffen's "Dark and Gritty" reboot began-- is Projectra (Sensor Girl) still around?

Hello,

I am sorry that I found my love for the Legion not until a few month back and now I try to collect as much trades as possible.

But now I have a little problem: It's about the Adventure Comics v2 2009 onwwards. I know that Superboy: the boy of steel collects the first issues of Adventure Comics, but how does it go further? I was getting lost between Krypton, Nightwing & Flamebird and Mon-El trades.

Can somebody help me through this? What trades I really have to buy?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Besides this, what volume or continuity can you recommend?
Original continuity • Post-Zero Hour • Threeboot • Post-Infinite Crisis ?

I love the current run but I am not so into the Silver Age era.

Levitz's take is that the current title's continuity continues on from the end of his run in V3, followed by The Lightning Saga, Superman & The Legion of Super-Heroes, Legion of Three Worlds, Last Stand of New Krypton.

The characters you mentioned are all members and have the same origins.

The V4 Legion has been erased from current Earth-0 continuity....They now occupy on another Earth in the Multiverse and would occasionally "crossover" to Earth-0. Same as the Reboot and Threeboot Legions.

Issue #0 of Adventure Comics was a reprint of Adventure #247 and a Superboy back up.

Issues 1-4 had Legion backup stories....I don't think they've been collected.

5,6,7 had no Legion stories. 5 & 6 had Superboy-Prime and those issues were collected in a Blackest Night volume.

8, 9, 10 were part of the Last Stand of New Krypton crossover. This is collected in two volumes.

12 began the Legion stories set in the past and is uncollected.

515-520 are collected in Superboy & The Legion of Super-Heroes: the Early Years.

I'd recommend just getting the Last Stand and Early Years books.

Besides this, what volume or continuity can you recommend?
Original continuity • Post-Zero Hour • Threeboot • Post-Infinite Crisis ?

Check out the Great Darkness Deluxe and its follow up, The Curse, would be my recommendation.

To Whom It May Concern,

My sister, Maryessa [Aghini Faud], is a freshman student at your university, living in the Allon Residence Hall. I am worried because I have not heard from her in several weeks and she has not responded to three of my communiques.

I am trying not to overreact, but it is unlike her to ignore my communiques. We have a very close relationship and that bond remained strong even after she emigrated to Earth for her studies.

You could understand my concern, considering all the news being reported about the "Humans First" isolationists committing hate crimes on aliens in Metropolis.

I do not have contact information for her roommates or teachers, or I would have tried to reach her through them.

I am hoping you may help me locate her to make sure she is safe.

Thank you for your assistance.

Dear Mr. Alastor,

We received you message of 5.12.3008 regarding the whereabouts of your missing sister, Maryessa Aghini Faud. It is with deep regret we inform you that at this time, we can not provide you with a definitive answer regarding her whereabouts or her condition. Due to recent spate of terrorist attacks committed by isolationist extremists in the Metropolis area, there have been multiple casualties whose remains have gone unidentified.

We do not know for certain your sister is among the missing, and even if she was, it is uncertain that sufficient remains exist to properly identify her. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of similar cases pending, a status complicated, as you can imagine, by the fact the victims were specifically targeted because they are aliens, and as such are harder to identify for next of kin notification.

We have passed your information to the Science Police Medical Examiner's Information Services Department and we recommend you contact them immediately as well. We are terribly sorry that we can tell you little more at this time and we hope by some stroke of fortune that your sister was not a victim of the recent troubles.

Best of luck to you, sir.

To Whom This May Concern,

I have been searching for my missing sister, Maryessa Aghini Faud, a year1 student at Metropolis University. I was referred to your organization by Andeera Gault, Director of Student Affairs; Off-world Residential Advisor, who informed me that my sister has not been heard of in weeks. Indeed, that with the recent spate of anti-alien terrorist activity, she may have been a victim of your planet's growing insanity.

I would like to know if DNA sampling has been conducted on any unidentified victims of those attacks. I can provide corroborating DNA samples if necessary, which can be used to possibly help identify my sister.

Please, I implore you for some assistance in this matter. As I reside on Rimbor and my funds are limited, so too has been my ability to advocate for my sister. My family has neither the credits or the connections to foment public scrutiny of the awful circumstances surrounding her disappearance, but I assure you, her family loves her very much. Her family misses her very much. All we ask is for some sense of closure on this matter.

Thank you for your time. I anticipate your response.

Dear Mr. Alastor Aghini Faud,

Our apologies for the delay in responding to your query of 14.June.

We have checked our datanet and found no catalogue of the sister you claim is missing. Our ability to identify the victims of the recent terrorist attacks has been severely compromised by the lack of available sampling material from among the missing. The attacks left little to nothing in terms of organic material that could be accurately codified through verifiable DNA testing.

Of course if you wish to send us familial DNA samples, as well as any samples from the missing individual that has not been previously compromised, such as original cell, hair, skin or blood samples that have been properly stored in an appropriate medical facility, then please feel free to do so. It could only help us in any future opportunities for sampling should unexpected organic remains be found during the reconstruction of the attack sites.

Our sincerest regrets for your inconvenience.

To Mr. Arlo Ponthe
Assistant Resources Manager
Science Police Medical Examiner's Information Services Dept.

It took you two months to respond to the query regarding my missing sister, Maryessa Aghini Faud, and in the first sentence of that response, your stated position is that I "claim" she is missing? Is this how you have treated all the family of those missing or killed by your xenophobic human residents or have you only chosen to treat those from the less influential in such a rude manner?

You have basically told me there is little you can (or will) do for my sister and that I should simply accept her ill-defined status. I know in my heart she is dead, killed on a world far away from her home. Killed because she believed in a dream of interspecies cooperation. Killed because the world she saw as a beacon for that opportunity, the world that founded the United Planets, Earth, could no longer accommodate such a dream.

Along with this letter I am sending you further "uncompromised" samples of my sister's DNA in the hope, faint though they may be, that your organization will actually choose to do something with the materials I provide you to bring a sense of finality to her status.

The prevailing view among the outer worlds has been that Earth's recent xenophobic excesses were caused by a very small minority of residents. We thought these sad ignorant fools simply didn't see the wonder and diversity of the galaxy as most Terrans do. Unfortunately, the indifference of your response to my situation is forcing me to consider that this ignorance is the prevailing attitude among humans.

A shame for the entire galaxy if that proves to be true.

Sincerely,

Alastor

Dear Mr. Alastor Aghini Faud,

Our apologies for the delay in responding to your query of 11.September.3008.

We have used the DNA samples from the package you sent us to compare against the meager biological evidence obtained at the sites of the Earth First terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, no match was found in our datanet to those of your missing sister, Maryessa Aghini Faud. As discussed, our ability to identify the victims has been severely compromised due to the nature of the attacks.

It is unlikely at this time that we will find scientific evidence to confirm that your sister was killed in one of those attacks. If you still have not heard from her, it is highly likely she was among the lost. Our best recommendation is that you proceed under the assumption she is no longer living and prepare according to the customs of your culture.

Our sincerest regrets to you and your family for your loss.

I have to leave Rimbor. Been no work for eighteen months. The factory's main source for export of telanyde was Earth sector. Humans First means off-worlders loose work.
Caught stealing food. Spent four months in jail. Beaten to within an inch of my life six times.
No hope of ever finding out the truth about my sister's death. I had no money to retrieve her belongings or contact my parents, so her things were destroyed.
Yesterday I was released from prison and given a deportation notice. Without money for transport, I will be placed on an indigent cargo ship headed for the asteroid mines in the beltway. A place where people like me are sent to work until we die.
But I don't want to die.
I want to live.
I want to live long enough to kill every human on the face of the planet Earth...

Five months on the asteroid mines of the beltway. I can barely walk, but every day I have to wake up and run the sonic jack that mines the benzene that fuels the fuel that fuels the sub-light ships. All of us here, like a family of misfits and outcasts, all of us homeless, all of us hating something or someone… or maybe just hating ourselves.
My sister died. My parents remain indigent and unable to contact me. I came to the stars to find fame and fortune. All I have found is sadness and heartache.
I am fourteen hundred credits shy of buying out my contract. It will take me four more months. I will have just enough left for a sub-light transport to take me to the Winathian Transport Hub. If I can scheme, steal or buy my way on to a sunlight transport to Earth that has Threshold Access rights, I can be there within a year.
And then I can look at the humans who took my sisters life. I will look for the one who has the guiltiest eyes -- or the angriest eyes -- either one -- and I will walk up to that human.
And I will kill them.
And then I can finally die at peace and my sister's life avenged.

Banked the last credits i needed to buy out my contract today. I bribed a loader to let me sneak on to the cargo hold of a sunlight transport leaving drydock tomorrow. I am one step closer to leaving this place. I am one step closer to reaching Earth.

Four months ago, I thought I could be content exacting revenge for my sister's death by simply killing one random human, as senseless and useless a loss as that of dear Maryessa. I thought that ironic justice, but also, admittedly, an act I might be able to accomplish, given my meager means and experience in the art of both interstellar transport and murder. But the more I thought about such an action, the less I considered it sufficiently addressed my sister's callous murder.

Making one pay does not serve to balance the scales for the pain I have endured. It does nothing to make all the other xenophobic savages of their world understand the darkness they have spread across the galaxy. No, the only way to balance these scales for the death of one so pure of soul is if all those blackened of soul pay for the crimes of their species.

I can not be content exacting revenge on one human, I must exact revenge on them all.

They will all pay.

Tomorrow, I am leaving this place. And I am one step closer to reaching Earth.

What Earth is the Reboot Legion on?

Last time we checked they were not on any Earth. They were 'Legion Lost'ing it around the Multiverse because their Earth 247 was destroyed. I can't recall if that was retconned to be in COIE.

Witchboy we don't even know if they exist at this point with all the changes in the multiverse. *and they better* If any writer worth his salt can now place them on any Earth in the 52 - well not Prime Earth - now. They originally lost their Earth in Infinite Crisis and were shunted to the time stream until legion of 3 worlds. Now with so much history being retconned in the wake of Post Flashpoint...well we have to wait and see...and I hope they're out there...and their Earth.
