Hi,

I'm sure some of you who know me here might remember that last year I made a risky move from HASBRO in order to come back home to Cincinnati and take up a job with a photo studio that seemed to be offering quite abit of opportunity. This would also allow me creative freedom in doing my own comics which I never could have had with Hasbro. And it should have helped Shannon and my finances in eventually getting settled down and into a home since it's cheaper out here than in New England.

Well, everything's gone south photo-business-wise, and the boss was forced to lay me off last week because business has been suffering due to either clients changing their systems, another photographer purposely stealing his clients, or people buying their own digital cameras. First, I was cut to part-time (in the middle of applying for a loan for a house no less!), then layed off later on.

Now, I'm really intent on getting more of an art-related job, like I'd always wanted, and love even better than photography.

I have a few freelance ops in the works, and a VERY small part-time job. And it's been rough these past months, as I've been part-time since Thanksgiving. I'd been sending out resumes as I could since then, but of course recently realizing I need FULL-TIME, I've redone/clarified my resume, started to put together an even stronger portfolio than I'd ever had, and have started to reorganize my website for those possible employers who would check it out. I've sent a few snail mails out today even, and will be e-mailing more employers tonight and tomorrow. Then it's out with the comic book submissions again. And I'm even trying to put together a REALLY NICE package for a major company.

So, I'm just asking that if you can, wish me luck in getting some responses to my resumes and portfolios so I can have interviews and get the chance to move on to something better.

Thanks!

Good luck, Scott! I know how hard it is to have to start all over again. I've had to do so a couple of times in recent years, and it always sucks at first. I'm sending good thoughts and vibes your way.

If there's anything we can do, let us know, okay? We'll do whatever we can to help ya out. :)

Thanks so much for your support, everybody!.

I spent most of last night and all day today overhauling my website.

I am very happy with it and hope it helps me more than it ever did. This now means that I can send out more resumes with the confidence that I've put my best stuff out there as accessible as it can be.

Stage two is down, on to stage three.

Good luck.

Regretting leaving HASBRO?

Thanks, DS!

I know in my heart that if Hasbro had stayed in Cincinnati and had gotten rid of their "conflict of interest" contract (preventing comic book work), I probably would have been with the company until the day I retired. I loved my job, and really enjoyed working with most of the people in the company. I just felt trapped creatively, and was terribly homesick.

I think I made the right decision to leave, but maybe just with the wrong job destination and time. At the same time I was looking at the job in Cincinnati, there was a company in New England that I was also doing spec work and interviewing with. Sad thing is, they had selected me as their top candidate for a designer position, right before management instituted a hiring freeze that the accountants had suggested. Now, I may a possibility open with them for maybe 2006, when the freeze is thought to be lifted, so we'll see. It would be very cool.

I miss friends at Hasbro, and Shannon and I are leaving our options open right now to move again depending on where I get a job (once she's out of her Master's Program in 2006, she can work anywhere in her field). Which could even mean a move back to New England. Or if I find a great job here, we may stay. Who knows.

Thanks so much for your support everyone!

I just landed a teaching gig today with the Art Institute of Cincinnati teaching digital image manipulation (aka Photoshop)! This plus the hours at the movie theatre my friend runs ( http://www.mariemonttheatre.com ) will at least see me through March (the school runs each class as a full month--instead of spread out with other classes over 3 months). If I do a great job teaching, I'll be able to teach other months too.... for a variety of art classes.

Funny, I just found out there is another similarly named school that is of no relation. I should clarify and say I'm with "The Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati". Believe it or not, there is another school... called the "Art Institute of Cincinnati". How confusing when I just truncated the title like that. Haha.

And thank you, noljoner and 13th, for the very kind words!

I'll let everyone know how the new job goes. My teacher orientation is Wednesday, and class officially starts next Monday, March 7th.

Thanks everyone! I am enjoying teaching Photoshop!

I've even done two assignments myself... for fun and to show the class what I am looking for. I am totally having a blast gearing up for school, preparing almost every day. Whether that's photographing, working in Photoshop, grading, or making assignments.

Please see my NEF art thread (page 2) for the two assignments I did...

One, creating a robot from choices of 145 shots I took of metal.
The other, a product pitch image with its logo and its packaging.
