View Full Version : Does anyone think that the DCU is a better fit for Disney than the MU?

Yeah, WB owns DC and Disney now owns Marvel, but I'm of the opinion that Disney would have better toys to play with in the DCU than the MU.
Never mind that Superman and Batman are the biggest toys in both companies, but the fantastical structure and story mode of the DCU is a much better fit for the kinds of stories Disney likes to tell. DCU projects like Teen Titans and JLA under the Pixar umbrella would be phenomenal. Even 2D animation featuring characters like Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman would be a massive sell. You can't tell me Captain Marvel couldn't be a face for the Magic Kingdom. And that's another thing. Disney knows how to market to girls, and DC has a nice crop of warrior princesses (Amethyst, WW, Donna Troy, Starfire) and queens (Mera) they could market to girls.
WB doesn't seem to think women can head up solo projects, which kinda fits Marvel's mode of thinking these days.

Had things been different, I believe Disney could have gotten more bang for its buck had they purchased DC as opposed to Marvel.

I really wish Warner Bros. would learn how to market the DC properties the way Disney would. I know Grant Morrison described his take on Captain Marvel to be like a pixar movie, and that's pitch perfect. There's also a thread on the Wonder Woman forum on how you could do a Disney-esque animated series. There's no reason WB couldn't do that themselves.

Pixar Captain Marvel? Were that to eventuate, I'd mildly nerdgasm.
I don't think it matters too much about the company, but DC needs to get itself some good marketers to appeal to other demographics, and a bunch of writers and artists who's style suits said markets, and get them to do their thing.

But, where would that leave Bugs Bunny and the other Looney Tunes?

I don't think he meant Captain Marvel could be the face that Mickey Mouse is. Just one of many faces, possibly (like how DC has various pillars).

The DCnU is an attempt to copy Marvel alot. DC's characters are no longer fantastical (a shame really). Disney made the right decision by buying the originators of "realism". ;)

Not sure if MU classifies as fantastical.

That's my point. Disney's not about whiny, emo characters who play at superheroes. They're about the fantastical element you experience when you see an immortal Amazon princess having brunch with intelligent albino apes from Gorilla City in a city park where the people don't think such a scene is abnormal. Marvel couldn't ever give you anything like that.

^I disagree. In pretty much every Disney movie, the main character(s) goes into some serious angst before fighting the main villain(s).

And don't forget Donald Duck and Howard the Duck team-ups.

And why not Namor meets Little Mermaid?

(Or, being quirky, Deadpool and Captain Hook?
Hulk and Remy, the rat from Ratatouille?)

Hulk and Remy? Now that's random. Lol.

Robin Hood and Hawkeye and Chernabog (Fantasia) meets Mephisto.

Wont be seeing any Marvel parks at Disney til Universal gives up the license. Disney also recently removed all Marvel merch from their themeparks.

Wow. I'd have thought Disney would be selling Marvel merchandise like crazy. What with the Avengers and Spiderman coming out this year, and Spidey's 50th Anniversary.

But if another company still has the rights to use any of that for movies and other live-action uses, they may be getting used at that company's competing theme park. (And promoting those Marvel characters at a Disney park may sort of be like advertising that other theme park in Disney's mind.)

Owns them either way. (Unlike Spidey, though.) Which I'm rather sure Lee meant.

Anyway, who ever knows by what twisted logic corporate execs are thinking?

I say have Warner and Disney switch the comic characters they own for three years and see what happens.

It will look kind of awkward for my collection to have no D C books for that period and my Marvel list
to go from a couple to over 30 titles and then revert back to over 30 D C titles and a few Marvel
books, once Disney gets there claws back on the Marvel Universe....

And I like WB + DC. I think they fit great! - http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7XUr1r1VNKo/TnrZ-5Lm-rI/AAAAAAAABM4/ziuDamw9nS4/s1600/WB%2BMural.jpg

My only gripe is they don't exploit the cross over potential enough!
Green Loontern was fun, but why haven't Martian Manhunter and Marvin the Martian ever shared a comic or cartoon? Have Hawkman and Henry Hawk ever met? Lex Luther and Elmer Fudd ever teamed up? Tweety & Black Canary?

Throw in all the WB owned Hanna-Barbera created heroes, I can't see those at Marvel, but they fit DC - http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/9104/capturepx.jpg

And while WB has dropped the ball on a few DC live action franchises, Catwoam, Green Lantern, they tend to do right by DC in their Animation dept.
