Hey kids, can I play too?! :)

So it's been awhile since I've been around, and I guess I never really was much of a prolific poster (yeah - look at that whopping post count!), but I thought I'd share a fun little project that I'm tinkering with (I've been poking around and looking at all of the Art Threads - there's some nice stuff being done 'round here! I'm particularly impressed with the Sculpey/sculpting thread - quite nice!)

Anyway, I can't recall who it was - and I didn't have any luck finding any threads - but I remember some dude doing custom figures, using Justice League figures as a base - he did a bitchin' Hellboy and I remember him starting work on an Abe, too.

Well, I was in my local Toys R Us recently and came across some JL Flash figures - I had a flash (no pun intended) of inspiration when I realized that I could probably turn one into a nice Lobster Johnson without a whole hell of a lot of modification.

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829516.jpg

Mind you, it won't be the traditional leather jacket-clad Lobster that we all know and love, but it will be more of a spandex-clad superhero type Lobster - a variation, if you will (kinda' like the costume that I did).

At any rate, here's what I've done so far:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829518.jpg

I clipped off the lightning bolts on his head and sanded down/sanded off the rest of the raised lightning bolt decoration, sanded down the seam lines on his legs and forearms, and gave him an overall prelimenary sanding. I superglued his leg joints and filled in the joints with Bondo, as well as the incised lightning bolt "belt" decoration. Then I added the flares on his legs with pieces of RenShape to give him jodhpurs - these will be blended in with more Bondo. If you squint and use your imagination, you can already start to see Lobster Johnson (well, *I* can, anyway :p)

I also started on a base for him - it's simply a 4" diameter wooden plaque that I picked up at Michael's. I sanded it down and sealed it with a coupla' coats of polyurethane - I'll be painting it, so I want to make sure that it's as smooth as possible. There are pegs of metal rod that run from the base up into his lower legs, which will help secure him to the base when everything is finished.

I'll post progress shots as I continue...

I'm really looking forward to this, Tim! I've got a couple of those figures, too, just waiting for me to find the time to get to them. I've never really tried a figure conversion, so I hope you can post a lot of details on the materials/methods you use. For instance, I've never heard of RenShape before. I'll go look that up now!

Thanks for the warm welcome back and kind words, guys :)

So I've only gotten a little further with LoJo:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829503.jpg

I finished blending in the jodhpur flares, and then made the gunbelt from styrene. The goggle lense pieces are aluminum tubing - I had to drill into his head to get the proper placement (poor Flash indeed :() They're just press-fit for right now - I still need to close them off with a piece of styene inside before I glue them in, and then I'll need to do a little blending in with Bondo.

I gave the base a couple coats of black primer - there are some dings and imperfections here and there that will have to be filled with Bondo, and then it'll get another coat or two of primer. I think I might make it a dark gunmetal color, so there will be a little contrast, since LoJo will be all black.

I also started in on the pouches and holsters and whatnot for his belt... the fun stuff! More on that to come later...

I hope you can post a lot of details on the materials/methods you use. For instance, I've never heard of RenShape before. I'll go look that up now!
John - RenShape is a trade name that has come to be used as a generic term, kind of like "Xerox", or "Kleenex". It's a solid polyurethane modeling material, sometimes also referred to as MMP, or "Machineable Modeling Plank", because it comes in large plank form (a couple inches thick by about a foot or two wide by about eight feet long, generally). It comes in different densities, but overall it machines, carves, and sands wonderfully - I've come to really like it as a building material. It's kind of expensive - especially a whole plank - but I've just "acquired" small chunks here and there, from the various shops and projects that I've worked on - they come in really handy for little projects like this. If you'd like a chunk to play with I'd be happy to send you one.

He looks really sharp so far.

I can't wait to see the fun stuff on his belt!

Grim Tim
02-02-2005, 09:52 AM
OK, I got all of the pouches and holsters and other greeblies that go on his belt blocked out:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829504.jpg

I carved and sanded the pouches and holsters out of pieces of RenShape - the straps are styrene strip. I plan on clipping off the heads of straight pins for use as snaps, after the pieces are painted and finished. The grenades on the front of his belt and the other thing on the back of his belt (I dunno what it's supposed to be... a thermos, maybe - lol) are simply pieces of EMA plastic tubing.

Everything was just stuck on with doublestick tape for the pics - for the actual final assembly, all of the pieces will have metal pins on the backside, which will peg into corresponding holes drilled into the belt - this will make the painting process much easier to have everything separate.

Now I just gotta tackle the goggles and the modifications will be complete! :)

Sweet! Great job so far! Will there be a raised claw symbol on his chest, or will that just be painted on?

The belt is outstanding. The only crit I could give this so far would be to ask for slightly larger goggles, but as is they don't detract from an amazing figure. Thanks for the update! Your stuff is one of my biggest inspirations on this forum.

I know you are doing a modified version, but i have to ask... No collars?!

I know.... spandex suits do not have these, Lojo just seems incomlete. ....meh, it's still kickass!

Grim Tim
02-02-2005, 05:06 PM
Well, I didn't get any work done on LoJo today - power was out at the shop all day ( caused by a squirrel getting fried on a transformer! ).

Anyway, sorry Johann - no collars on this version. Maybe I'll have to try a more traditional version someday...

John - the goggles are about as big as they can be, considering the size of his head - any bigger and they'd start to stick out on the sides a bit too much. I actually started with tubing that was slightly smaller, but I could see right away that it was definitely too small, so I upped it to the present size. I'm pretty happy with how they look.

As for the claw icon, that will just be painted on. I briefly considered doing it dimensionally, but it seemed that getting it to lay nicely over the chest contours could be a challenge.

All way kool Tim. The Lojo is looking very good, my only wish would be for a less goofy expression (being a Mignola character he needs the proper grimness - no?) I don't even know if it's possible to do that...I guess it would be difficult. Anyway nice work!

Grim Tim
02-02-2005, 08:25 PM
Not at all, morna - in fact, one of the first things that I did was try to wipe that silly smirk off his face.

You can't really tell from the pics, but I scraped a little Bondo into the upturned corners of his mouth. I won't know until I spray some primer on him, but I'm hoping that will help to give him a neutral expression. If it doesn't quite do the trick, I guess I'll try to turn the corners of his mouth down with a fine riffler file.

Anyway, I'm in full agreement that he should definitely be more grim.

nice, looking more like the lobster.

Question for anyone... What does lobster johnson's mask/head gear-thingy look like in whole? ex: the back of the head, where does it stop? also what does his neck look like, shirt or 1 piece attached to the head-thingy?

-curious, for detail in my sculpture.
thanks.

Conundrum
02-06-2005, 05:12 PM
Pretty sure the headpiece is one of those old timey, leather pilot caps with the ear flaps that buckle under the chin and the coat is one of those outer flap closures like they had in or around the civil? war or the old west maybe with buttone around the perimeter. Not sure about the shirt underneath. It's probably just a turtleneck.

It looks like the headcover of a wetsuit, one piece covering the back of his head and all of his neck, based on how it was drawn by Mignola in Conqueror Worm.

Yeah, those are the ones! Thanks Jakob - you da man :) Silly me, I didn't grab the pics when the dude posted 'em. You can see that he used the Flash figure as well - guess it makes sense, since it's the most "basic" and therefore more easily modified.

No real progress on the Lobster... I've been distracted by this, which arrived last Friday afternoon:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/544990/84454989.jpg

It's pretty sweet! :D

Grim Tim
02-12-2005, 11:27 AM
Well, the time-consuming, tedious, and boring process of priming the figure for paint is coming along alright:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829507.jpg

I'm gonna be doing the priming and painting in stages - with the arms down where they're supposed to be, it makes it a bit difficult to get to some spots, so that's why I'm doing it this way.

All the stuff that goes on the belt is ready for paint:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829501.jpg

I decided not to use the pinheads for the fasteners - they would have worked great, but they didn't really follow the whole aesthetic of the figure. Simply put, they weren't "cartoony" enough. Also they would have had a different lustre than the other "metal" stuff, like the belt buckle and grenades, and whatnot - that would have been distracting, IMO.

Anyway, the progress continues...

Well, I got bored with "Ghost LoJo", so I turned him into "Mummy LoJo" ;)

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829509.jpg

Seriously though, the painting process continues (slowly)...

So when I'm waiting for paint to dry I need something to do... so I decided to revive and continue an old project that I just barely got started on awhile back:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829512.jpg

As you can see from the printout, this project is the medallion from Almost Colossus. I thought about this one for a good couple of years, because the hurdle for me was always the tiny little moon face - I just don't have the sculpting chops to attempt something that small and do it nice and tight. Anyway, I recently ran across these little cast resin cherubs in a craft store, and eureka! - problem solved. So I ground and sanded one down, cleaned it up a bit with some Bondo, primed it... and presto!

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85829511.jpg

I'll probably carve the little crescent moon piece out of a scrap of RenShape, and then sculpt the rest in Kleen Klay - that's really simple, so I know I can handle that.

Hellsaint

Will LoJo have a gloss look to him? or is this paint wet or incomplete?

Well my plan is this... since he will be all black, I wanted to differentiate the stuff that would be leather (boots, gauntlets, belt, helmet, etc.) by making it gloss, while the rest of the outfit - which would be cloth - will be matte black.

Oooo - and check this out... of course, I even did the claw electrode!

Yikes! Time really flies as one gets older... I can't believe it's been 4 weeks since I've posted an update.

I kinda' lost my momentum on the LoJo figure when I had to go do a rush job one week, but I've finally gotten back to him and I'm in the final stages of painting:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/89308058.jpg

The head, belt, and boots got painted after I snapped this pic, so all that's left is some detail painting on the belt and the head, any touch-up painting that needs to be done (hopefully there won't be much), and then the attachment of the belt stuff and he'll be done!

In the interim I also cast and completed a Colossus pendant:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/89308054.jpg

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. I picked up some jewelry crafting rings at Michael's - just need to string some together and figure out what sort of length I need, and this will be done too :)

I'm REALLY excited to see where this model/figure is going. Lobster Johnson's always been one of my favorite reoccuring characters in the HB/BPRD series.

As for my "gaming exploits", I'm quite the fan of Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 (PC games respectively). For quite some time now, my handle has been Lobster Johnson, with my in-game tag/spraypaint being the BPRD logo.

It's funny to run around fragging people and then on the rare occasion run into to someone who says .. "HEY! BPRD! You like hellboy!?"

Wow, thanks guys :o Glad you like him. It was definitely a labor of love... but the labor got to be a bit much after awhile - I had some minor problems with a couple things and towards the end I really wanted it to just be done. So, I don't think I'll be doing another figure conversion for awhile.

That's a lot of pie, John ;) (what the heck is that from?) I did post this pic on a previous page - I took it while the arms were still mobile and I still had a chance to get a shot of the brand:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/85813334.jpg

As it is now, it's kinda' tough to get a decent shot - the inside of the hand is mostly obscured by his leg. But if one looks closely from a rear angle, the claw can be seen. Not something a person would notice, but I like to know that it's actually there :D Also, as you can see, it's a bit rough (I like to think of it as "stylized") I cut it out of .020 styrene with an Xacto - the thing is tiny, so that was definitely a challenge.

Clash of the Titans?! Where did that come from? I wasn't expecting that :)

No... sorry to disappoint you guys - it's a Hellboy conversion. And I'm getting ahead of myself a bit... here's where I actually started:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308128.jpg

I scored one of the Japanese vinyl figures off of eBay for only 20 bucks and promptly tore it apart for the Right Hand of Doom. As you can see, I "tuned it up" a bit, to make it a tad more accurate. These are actually resin castings here - I made molds before and after I altered it (ya never know when you might need a mini RHoD!)

And here's an early test fit, to see how it's gonna look - I'm using a Justice League Batman figure (he's a bit bigger and beefier than the Flash). Obviously the RHoD is somewhat oversized, but I knew it would be, and I dig the exaggerated look.

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308139.jpg

Grim Tim
05-28-2005, 10:13 AM
Then I made some patterns for a buckle, a D-ring strap, and a belt pouch out of styrene strip, styrene tubing, and a piece of Ren Shape:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308175.jpg

I molded 'em since I needed to cast multiples of each, thusly:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308179.jpg

And then I started on the legs - I tore the figure apart to make the painting process easier when I get to it later (I learned something when I did the LoJo conversion).

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308187.jpg

Grim Tim
05-28-2005, 10:25 AM
And yesterday I was working on the holster...

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308189.jpg

The main body is Ren Shape, the flap is styrene, and the strap is a strip of brass - I used brass so the flap would hold its shape like I wanted. The tape wrap around the bottom is styrene strip and the "US" patch is a cast resin piece - I pulled a quickie mold of it just using clay, from the Japanese vinyl figure holster.

I also started on a barrel tip piece and a grip for the pistola:

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/98308193.jpg

The barrel is styrene tubing and styrene strip, and for the grip, the frame is a piece of Sintra, and the grips are shaped out of Ren Shape (yes, I *am* insane, but it's gonna look sweet when it's all assembled :D)

John, you're thinking along the right lines... while not exactly the same, Ren Shape and Balsa Foam have some similar characteristics, as far as carving and shaping. They both also come in various densities, so I'm sure the question of strength is subjective. The longevity of both materials (if subjected to handling) isn't as great as a cast resin copy however.

Balsa Foam is classified as a "closed cell foam" and is Phenolic, while Ren Shape is solid Polyurethane. I just "acquire" small chunks of it here and there, from the various shops and projects that I work on.

Gotta agree with John though that you should've gone with Superman instead of Batman. They're both bigger than Flash, but Supes is HUGE!!

Yes, you DID post those pics of the custom JLA figures - and thanks once again for that. (and there's your answer Petersen - this is one of the 10" figures... trying this with one of the little action figures would really be insane!)

I hadn't thought about shortening the legs - I think that might look a bit too strange. Think of it as keeping the JLA style and making Hellboy conform to that, rather than taking the JLA style and altering it to fit the literal comic book Hellboy physique.

http://pic12.picturetrail.com/VOL440/452919/6660810/99569410.jpg

I sanded it down to its basic form, and then added the horn stumps with slices of styrene tubing filled with Bondo. I built up the nose and the lower jaw, and tried to blend the cheeks in a bit with more Bondo. I then added the goatee and the hair, which are styrene - I added some Ren Shape "flares" to the muttonchops, to give 'em a little more dimension... had to blend those in with a bit of Bondo as well. The ears and the ponytail are pieces of Ren Shape.

It still needs some minor tweaking in the cheeks, but by god I think that's it!

I really like how it turns out!
There are a couple of details I'd change... but they are not important. Only two things -
I like the V-shaped line between the eyebrows which is missing after priming. Maybe there could be like a micro step where the nose and forehead connect? (Top of the nose a little bit lower?) Also, I like the stronger angle in eyebrows more (like it's on the pictures before primer phase). Don't loose this angularity from the face! I'm not an action figure expert, but I think angularity gives better shadows later...
Another thing - maybe the ponytail could be a little bit lower?...

This is not criticism, but as there are already enough praises in all the responses without me...

Theres not much I can add that other people already havent, but HOLY HELL! does that look good!!!

What I also really like is that you've retained alot of the origional style of the JLA figure when redoing it as hellboy, helps tie it to the rest of the body style.

Grim Tim
06-07-2005, 10:14 AM
Thanks, all :)

Ivar - it's called constructive criticism, and it's both helpful and appreciated - so thank you for that. I actually pondered putting a step between the brow and the nose, but I also liked the look of the single continuous plane, so I went with that. I'll try putting a notch in, and if I don't care for it I can easily fill it back in with Bondo.

As for the angularity of the brows, I think that's an optical illusion - before it was primed, there was a significant contrast in value between the areas that had been sanded (which turned grey) and the unsanded areas which remained black. I didn't spray on much paint, so the softened angles were there all along - the paint just revealed that fact. But I did notice the difference right away, just as you did. I will strive to correct that with careful sanding, as I agree that a hard angle is much better.

The ponytail... I had a HELL of a time getting it centered properly - I had to snap it off and glue it back on no less than 3 times! Ugh! So it's staying where it is :p

Ivar_L
06-07-2005, 10:46 AM
I don't know what's with that ponytail - I had hard times with my sculpture too. Not only was it hard to find the decent form for it but the first version was way off center. Cant' understand why and how.

On secont thought - I know! Of course it's Mignola's fault!

Giant stony right hand made of RenShape, perhaps?

Sorry to hear about Mjolnir, Tim. I hope its not too badly damaged. That's a beautiful piece.

I'm curious about the Ren Shape-- if it is a dense polyurethane foam, is it the kind that leaves millions of sandy grains behind after sanding? I've got some chunks of urethane foam, and while its handy stuff, I seldom use it because the grains/dust get everywhere.

Also, do you have to apply a putty to it to get a smooth painting surface, or does it sand smooth enough to avoid that extra step?

Grim Tim
06-07-2005, 06:33 PM
Any giant stony right hands - should they be made - will be out of upholstery foam coated with latex :D Doing one out of Ren Shape would be astronomically expensive

Ren Shape isn't a foam... kinda' hard to explain... I've heard people say "it's basically compressed Bondo," which isn't correct, because Bondo is polyester. But it *does* sand like Bondo - it produces a very fine, talc-like dust. You can get very smooth surfaces by sanding it, but a couple coats of primer really help finish it off.

I also like the urethane foams you referred to - that's what I used for the head of Mjolnir (and that's why it was damaged too, because I used a particularly soft foam and stupid me didn't hardcoat it - I only used gesso). Obviously, it has its limitations and is only good for certain applications, and it really does make a mess - and if you get the dust in your eyes... boy howdy does that smart! It's just like little particles of glass. Ouch!

Well Jakob, I'm currently in the tedious and boring priming for paint stage...

It kinda' seems like I'm having a bit more trouble this time around with getting the Bondo-ed areas to smooth out nicely - it's really been vexing me  Plus, I'm using a different primer this time and I don't really care for it - it doesn't sand very nicely unless I let it sit for at least a whole day...

I have started painting the belt pouches and whatnot, while I wait for primer to dry, and I *am* having a bit of fun with that - I'll snap some pics today to keep you happy :)

And here's something to tide you over... I did tweak the head a bit - that little notch between the brow and nose makes a huge difference...

Or maybe you and JT should do a joint display.

Grim Tim
07-08-2005, 08:55 AM
Sir, yes sir! It shall be done... how are we gonna get JT out here though?

Well I'm glad you all approve :) To answer some of your questions...

I use a Fuji FinePix 2600 - it's old (I've had it for about 3 years) and it doesn't have all the latest and greatest bells and whistles, but it does take good pics... at least for what I use it for, which is documentation of stuff that I make. It also has a macro feature which allows for nice closeups...

As for the tail, it seemed pretty obvious where it should go - it was either the spot where I put it, or right above that spot where the surface is vertical, which would have looked really odd IMO. I think not only from an aesthetic standpoint, but from a physical/biological standpoint as well, it was logical to put it where I did. As for it being too small, it is on the abbreviated side... at least when you compare it to how Mike draws it. But being that the whole figure is stylized, I thought I could take some liberties with it. Also, I simply started with the end piece of the tail from the Japanese vinyl figure - that saved me the grief of trying to decide how to make the tail look, which way it should curl, etc. etc., which would have driven me mad. And I would probably still be working on it...

After painting, I sealed everything with a couple coats of clear Krylon Matte Finish. Doesn't really make sense when you look at it, I know... it's actually more of a "satin" or "semi-gloss" finish. Either way, it works and I like it.

I would buy one of these and it would be thee Pride of My Collection (notice the caps? :))!

So, so beautiful. And I really like the stylized tail. Seems to fit with the way the figure is exaggerated as a whole. The details are outstanding!

Have you ever used Testors "Dullcote" spray? I love this stuff- its a laquer spray, dries fast and dead flat. I use it on model kits and painted sculpts all the time. The laquer won't dissolve paint like some of the Krylon spray solvents do.

That Dullcote spray, is it any good for use on miniatures? I have used the GW stuff on minis and it beads a bit over the models.

I have - it helps with "scale effect" on miniatures (especially the really small stuff) where you don't want the paintjob to blow the scale. But I don't mind the Krylon matte on the figures - I think if they were dead flat, they'd look kinda' lifeless.

Grim Tim, I'm a little late on the compliments but, wow, that Hellboy modification in unbelievably cool. Sweetcore, you might say. I'm in awe of your ability to create tiny little details. The amulet on chain with little beads that Hellboy clutches in his left hand is the epitome of coolness.

It is awesome the way you thought everything out before putting everything together: the way you divided the revolver into two pieces and the way you formed the rosary. If I didn't see those pre-assembled I would have thought the gun and the rosary are complete items. Amazing!

All tricks of the trade, my friends ;)

I did have a lot of fun doing these, and seeing them take shape was very gratifying. And I'm glad that I can share them with all of you :)

I have to admit that I'm a bit baffled by this "Sweetcore" business, though... I'm guessing that rather than it being a question of me being old and out of touch, it's more likely just a regional colloquialism. Am I right? I know that down in New Zealand "sweet as!" is the local variation of "sweet!" But I digress....

Sweet! Emperor Zombie's medallion! Its great to see you branching out from the pure Hellboy props and creating pieces from Screw-On Head as well. When will you make the 1:1 scale SOH?

Grim Tim
07-17-2005, 08:57 AM
Quiet, you! ;) I'd actually been wanting to do this piece for a loooong time now - basically since I first read ASOH. This and the Kalakistan Fragment to go along with it! :) A 1:1 SOH would be a challenge, but cool... but I've wanted to do a 1:1 Von Klempt head-in-jar for even longer, so it'll have to go on the "to do" list...

If I lived near you I'd suggest teaming up to take on a project like this. It would be amazing to see a life-size SOH!

Now I want to try making just the head itself, just to see it done. I've made a little one before (1/6 scale), and I don't think it would be too difficult. I too have a huge list of projects to get done, with more adding up all the time!

It looks great! What is the scale and material? consider me pumped! Thanks! :) The skull is approx. 2 1/2" across by 3" tall. This is just the pattern - I'll be molding it to cast the final one - so it's simply sculpted out of Kleen Klay, which is a non-sulphur, oil-base clay (non-sulphur is important if silicone rubber is going to be in contact with it). Probably not the best material to use, but it was handy and I'm used to working with it (when mold making). The eyeballs are plastic elliptical hemispheres ('cause I can't sculpt something that nice and clean).
