View Full Version : Which 'new', unaligned writers should be brought to DC?

I'm inestimably excited about the new talent DC has brought onto their DCnU books; Edmonson, Fialkov, Costa, Fisch, Brandon, etc all deserve expanded roles at the company. Guys like Snyder and Lemire and Cornell deserve the expanded roles they have already taken.

But as we get some writers leaving books(Brandon, Simone, apparently) and others failing to compel (IMHO: Krul, Higgins, Jurgens, etc) we'll need a new batch of blood.

What are names of some newer writers that should be included.

A few...

Brandon Graham - He's done amazing work on King City and his "Prophet" from Image looks SPECTACULAR. Give him a concept and let him go crazy and just breath incredible new life into it. Please?
Bryan Q Miller - Looks like he's already getting a new secret project from him at DC. Can't wait. But want more than just one -- he should be doing at least two. (I know he's doing the novel to).
Brian Clevinger - Because he's doing smart, fun, clever comic books. I'd love to see him do science RIGHT over in Mr. Terrific.
John Rozum: Because he appears to be doing nothing right now. It's important to put him on something that plays to his horror, concept-rich wheel house. No more static, as that sort of failed creatively; Something where he can go ape.
Andy Diggle: He's not in any way new, but he's unaligned, and looks like he might be doing something at DC. He's basically good at action comic books, so that gives him a wide variety of options. Wouldn't mind him taking on Men of War, but may as well give him something new to.

Here's hoping that there is room for Ivan Brandon as well. I'd love to see him do more at DC.

Actually it's hard to tell what on Static was his idea as he said pretty much everything was McDaniel

Al Ewing has been doing some crazy but very good work for 2000AD the last few years. I wouldn't mind him getting a shot at Doom Patrol. Especially if he could lure Brendan McCarthy in with him.

Philip Gelatt's OGN Petrograd from Oni was one of the best books I've read this year. Maybe it's just because of the WWI connection, but I'd love to see him do something with Enemy Ace or one of the older war titles. Maybe give him Men of War.

David Hine's kinda dropped off the radar-- he is working on a new volume of Bulletproof Coffin-- but I'd like to see him back at DC. He's my pick to take over Hellblazer when Milligan departs, but I'd love to see him take Detective over.

Brandon Seifert and Lucas Ketner's Witchdoctor is one of the most original and entertaining comics I've seen in years. I'd love to see what they could do with a character like Etrigan.

Neither are new to comics, but my ultimate dream DCnU comic would be Phantom Stranger by Matt Wagner and Tim Sale.

i'd love to see him on detective as well. his arc before snyder's was a decent story but was really brought down by mcdaniel's art. his one issue of batman & robin was a complete trip, and would have been much better as a three issue arc as he originally planned. plus, from some of his comments posted one of the azrael threads, he had some serious plans for that as well, but were cut short way too soon. i'd love to see hine back working in the bat-verse. pair him up with szymon kudranski! i'd pick that book up in a heartbeat.

Eric Trautmann wrote a pretty good JSA mini and also wrote Red Circle's The Shield, which was also great.
I've always wanted him to write Checkmate or a Justice Society ongoing. Mr. Terrific and Suicide Squad would be great as well.

Isn't Hine taking over Top Cow's The Darkness?

I think Rozum butted heads with creative. They kept shooting down his ideas and wanted more from him in a short time. Having an ongoing at the start of the relaunch wasn't for everyone.

I have no idea, but I'd be willing to check it out if he is. Hopefully, it won't have your garden variety Top Cow artist on it, though. They've had good writers like Jenkins, Lapham, and Hester on The Darkness, but the art was always sub-Silvestri.

Cullen Bunn
Mark Andrew Smith

Given the reception of Strange Talents of Luthor Strode, they should probably bring in Justin Jordan.

I think Cullen Bunn has a deal with Marvel that allows him to keep working on The Sixth Gun. Not certain on this, though.

Bummer that. With DC actually working to develop some of their lesser-known properties, I could see it being fertile ground for an up-and-comer.

Oh yeah, Hine is replacing Hester.

I, uh, did write Checkmate—issue 17, specifically—and then I co-wrote #21-25 at the end of Greg Rucka's run on the title. (Collected in "The Fall of the Wall," and "Kobra: Resurrected" TPBs, respectively.
