View Full Version : Stupid Ebay Comic Book Auctions Game

Hi, Ho, Everybody.
My name is Nate. One of the things I love most about CBR is all the different games. Lone Ranger has a Comic Jumble game and a Guess the Cover game. There's an X-Men game in their forum, and on and on.
Well, I got permission from Sir Tim Drake to start another one here. Please find time to play when you can, and I'll be sure to keep the official score and do my best with rulings.
P.T. Barnum once said there's a sucker born every minute, and the Greeks taught us long ago, "buyer beware", but Ebay seems to be the place where fools and their money are often parted.
What this game is NOT:
1. It is not a forum for you to spam, or post your auctions. This thread exists only to mock other's pain and foolishness.
2. It is not here to post any Ebay auctions other than classic comics, as defined by CBR; that is, comics older than 2 years old. (Sir Tim was nice enough to allow the occasional insane new comic. If you see a New Avengers alternate cover with a buy it now of $500.00, by all means, post it. :D ) Any toys, junk, stuff, will not be considered part of the game.
3. A place for excessive thread drift. Comments and jokes about the game and any current auction topic are ok, any other drift is not.
What this game is:
1. The place you've always wanted to see. A place to make fun of comic book auctions that are anything like this: (ex. "These were bought by me, and I had them graded by a comic book store locally; I would have them professionally graded, but I'm moving, and these have got to go! Check the scan, because I don't take refunds! Sorry the pic is so small; I've only seen one of these on Ebay, bid now, super rare." And of course the book is a modern age fair, for double guide.)
2. A way to vent some steam after wading through multiple auctions looking for an honest seller.
3. I hope a lot of fun.
THE RULES:
1. Anyone can post, but it has to be a classic comic, as defined by CBR.
2. You can post multiple posts, without waiting for someone else to post.
3. Comments on why your post is a "sucker bet" are preferred.
4. Post must include link to actual ebay auction.
5. Points will be awarded by me weekly, and posted on this post. Points will be given, similarly to "Whose Line is it Anyway?", so don't get upset if someone jumps ahead astronomically; it's just a forum game.
6. You don't have to post auctions at all. You can simply make comments on current auctions!
What to Look For/Possible Points (5-200):
1. Seller's Comments are ludicrous and make you laugh
2. Seller blatantly lies
3. Seller overcharges by at least 100%
4. Seller has no clue what book is about but puts hard sell on anyway
5. Seller only accepts cash
6. Seller shows different picture than listed
7. Seller sells a major book with 0% feedback, or less than 75% positive
8. Seller charges triple actual shipping charges
9. Anything you think is ludicrous. (?# points)
BONUS POINTS UPDATE:
1. If you email the seller to explain to him why his auction is ludicrous, and you post that email here, you get points. If you get a response, and you post that too, that's another set of points.
Let's see how it goes and most of all, let's have some fun.

Okay, here's a great example of a sucker bid. Note the date in the title. 1962. Now note the date on the cover. That means Thor was created in 1902, sixty actual years before he was created.
This seems like blatant dishonesty to me. Anyone else? But, on the bright side, it's super rare, so you know....
Sir Tim Drake
01-25-2005, 08:46 PM
When you refer to the date on the cover, are you talking about the 60th Anniversary stamp?
Because if that's what you're referring to, then... damn, this is a pretty dishonest auction.

Yeah, he states it as a 1962 comic, but then the date on cover says "Marvel's 60th Anniversary". That would put date of book around 1999 if you date from 1939. So he's off by thirty-seven years, I think.
Ebay is LOADED with dishonest comic sellers.

Here is a classic comic I had never heard of.
But the description, " Completely Readable" made me laugh.
And the fact that the bottom quarter of the scan is cut off makes me giggle.

Red Oak Kid,
For being the first to post, you get an automatic 50 points!!! :)
Of course, the comic seller looks pretty honest. The seller called it "readable" and graded it at "fair", so not too bad.
I do hate seeing half a book on comic book auctions, though.
Let's find some outrageous auctions, CBR!!!

Ebay is LOADED with dishonest comic sellers.
The first thing I ever won on Ebay was Journey into Mystery 114. I never got it. I tried to contact the guy and be professional. By the time my patience was at its end I couldn't even leave him negative feedback. I learned from that one.

If you look at "View seller's other items" you'll see he photographed ALL his comics this way. My favorite is "Anthro #74." He can't even get the title right.

Here is a classic comic I had never heard of.
You've never heard of John Stanley's masterpiece of teen humor? It's Betty & Veronica if they acted like real teenagers, as bitchy and insecure and hormonal as that sounds. Thirteen Going on Eighteen, and I say this without hyperbole, is one of the greatest comics works of the twentieth century.
Uh ... was that off-topic already? Then here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14433&item=6507470091&rd=1). If "Charles Schultz" ever touched that drawing, I'll eat a hat of anyone's choice.

Wasn't an issue of this featured at the Oddball Comics page?
Scott! has featured a bunch of Stanley's work, but I sure don't remember ever hearing or seeing this title.
Here's one for the Stupid Ebay Comic Book Auction Hall of Fame. Stop me if you've heard this one before.
A few years ago, someone on the Golden Age/Silver Age message board wanted to know if comics from the 40s were larger than current comics. The reason they asked was because someone on ebay was auctioning off a copy of Batman 1(or Detective 27). It was one of those DC Treasury editions from the 70s, but the seller claimed it was the actual comic from the Golden Age. The seller did post the larger dimensions, but claimed not to know this was a 70s reprint book.
I think the bidding had already gone over $100.
I'm sure that's not the first or last time this has happend. I really can't feel sorry for the bidders who are so greedy, they think they are really making a steal and yet know so little about the product they are bidding on.

Perhaps my most rare comics would be the Batman #38 and 44 I have or the Sensation Comics #34

I think this one qualifies perhaps as a blatant lie. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=32743&item=6507942921&rd=1)
What gets me is that the seller didn't need to lie, this is a pretty desirable book in what looks to be pretty good condition (though I doubt it's the claimed "near mint", based on the scan). But it's definitely not the "first appearance of Catwoman"--first Catwoman appearance in LOIS LANE, maybe, but not the "first Catwoman."
Still, isn't this a darned good cover? Kurt Schaffenburger drawing Lois and Selina in a cat fight, with Superman transformed into "Superpussycat" and kept in a Kryptonite cage! I love it!

Sword of Sorcery 1,2,3 and 5.

Adams did ink some of the panels in ish 1 and 2. But that's it.
He had nothing to do with ish 3, and ish 5 is by Walt Simonson.

My wife just started a job writing auction descriptions for an over-the-counter eBay service, and a guy came in with a bunch of 80s Marvels. I told her about this thread and now she's really nervous.

As mentioned in another post, it is the first Silver-Age appearance of Catwoman. If the guy put that up, his only lie would be calling this book NM.
This was a book I wanted. I like Silver-Age Jimmy and Lois comics. I was buying them for $1-2 back in the late 80's. Then all of a sudden, this book jumped way up in price (especially after the second Bat-movie), more than I was willing to pay.
However, this comic (and the second half---it's a two-parter) was recently reprinted in a trade called (I think) NINE LIVES OF THE CATWOMAN. The trade cost less than Overstreet's GD listing for just # 70.
And the story is great. I've read a lot of goofy Mortified Silver-Age books, and this story is in my top ten.

This book is not rare in the least bit. If I remember correctly, War Zone #1 was the single most produced Punisher comic ever. And for $5.00, it's a total rip-off.
Also, if I may quible over eBay comics for a minute: I hate when seller posts something like this:

28 issues are not for sale, like the title suggests. Only 11 books. That really, really sets me off.

Allright!! Chris CCl gets 10 points for bringing in two stinkers, but to be fair, the first isn't really priced outrageously (unreaslistically, yes) but the "rare" bit qualifies it and the second one is pretty standard. It's hard to put all the details into Ebay's title line. Iv'e listed books like that too. And immediately tried to give the exact numbers in the description. I remember once I had Cerebus run from issue 14-200 something, and 87 books listed in title. Then in the description, each book I had was listed.
What did you guys think about the three I posted last night? Any takers on a Spidey 14 for over 4 grand, or a #1 ungraded/graded?

Unfortunately I can't post a link, because this was a while back, but it was an egregious case of stupidity. I was perusing original art on E-bay and the title was something like, Flash Original Art - George Perez. I didn't remember Perez ever doing Flash so I clicked on it. The page was CLEARLY Don Heck. So I checked it on the GCD and Perez had done the Firestorm backup on that issue. The only thing I can think of is that they looked up the book in Overstreet and just assumed it was Perez.

I agree with you Slam, but if you're into CGC (and this game is most certainly NOT CGC friendly), it's actually a deal, since you couldn't buy the comic and get it graded that cheap.

My favorite, and the reason why I wanted a forum for this, was the seller from Malaysia, 0 % feedback, selling a Fantastic Four #1 for ungodly money, with a horrible, small, fuzzy picture, NM, and he only accepted cash.
And every word of that is true. Man, I wish I had kept that auction.

First off, a full run of Man called Nova will NOT be $150! There are other auctions about for roughly $25-30 which seems much more reasonable.
Second, the scan isn't even for #1 of Man called Nova - it's for #1 of Nova vol II which spun out of New Warriors in about 93/94....

Sword of Sorcery 1,2,3 and 5.
Neal Adams' name does not appear in any of these issues.

Great! This means I can post the following classic:
Dracula Lives! U. K. weekly first issue with a starting bid of 99p. A completely reasonable price for this comic, to be honest (reprints the first ten or so pages each of Marvel's Tomb of Dracula, 'Werewolf by Night' and Frankenstein series in B&W).
But: £3.50 P&P.

Actually, it's worse than that. They do mention the fee, but it doesn't really come accross, till you do the math.
The first book you buy from neat stuff is 5.00 shipping and handling.
Each book after that, whether it's one more, or a hundred more, is a 1.50 shipping and handling.
I've seen tons of books won from neat stuff for a penny.
Let's say you won 75 penny books.
They would cost you 75 cents for the comics.
And $116.00 for shipping and handling.
And you just paid $116.75 cents for modern age books you could get at your local quarter bin, sucka.

Some prawn called Sunshiver is the small crustacean attempting to flog a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15, with a high bid currently at £22. i think i've ordered from them 3 times. first time, it took maybe a day or 2 over a month. second time, probably 1 1/2 months. third time ... well, that's the one referenced above, for which incidentally they told me on 12/10 that they'd be refunding my paypal account. (yes, i'm still waiting.)

Dan,
The issue in question is from Alan Moore's 6 issue "1963" line from early nineties. It was a redo of Marvel Universe using his own characters. I enjoyed it. That may be why the seller is confused with the date.
But he's still goofy. If book was that old, would it look that good, and as you said, cost that much?

I use US/Canadian sellers quite a bit. I've been burned once - Neat Stuff, funnily enough - but not for a large amount, thankfully. I've had a couple of long boxes shipped over which costs a fortune, but if the contents are cheap enough it evens out...
Smaller packages of up to 9 comics can usually be sent by prepaid global priority envelopes from the US and arrive in about 10 days - for about $10, IIRC. So that's pretty good if there are a few key issues that you want!
I also use mailordercomics.com for my monthly shipment of books - the savings there are huge, the exchange rate is good and I get billed $30 shipping per month for all my books. Way cheaper than getting everything from Forbidden Planet!

Two other great things about this auction.
This quote:
"The shipping instructions are mis leading so please rest assured i service the whole planet."
And that although this seller deals in comic books, and eBay categories let him narrow it down to:
Collectables > Comics > Modern Age (1980-Now) > Superhero > Spider-Man > Amazing
...he feels it necessary to put "old comic book" in the auction title and leave out a key word that tells you waht the book is.

Excellent. This means I can cite an example of my pet peeve: sellers who don't know the title (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12589&item=6508276110&rd=1) of the comic of which they're selling an issue. In this case, someone with an issue of Amazing Adventures.
Oh, and when we're not talking about comics over the internet, what do we spend most of our time doing? I would suspect going round comic shops and comic marts with notebooks with some titles and a lot of numbers written in 'em, so we can cross off the numbers when we buy a comic. This seems to have escaped the notice of the seller of this item. (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12589&item=6508709073&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)

Notice he mentions that most of the comics haven't been read? I'm guessing we're seeing the last of the clueless 90's speculators deciding to cash in! :D
As to the prices, he says he used NOSTOMANIA (http://www.nostomania.com/servlets/com.nostomania.HomeServlet).
And man...I gotta preserve the question and answer section for posterity:
Q: WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THE VALUES OF THESE COMICS FROM????
A: In the description it states where I got the values from. Here is the link to the sight feel free to check the numbers out for yourself. http://www.nostomania.com/servlets/com.nostomania.HomeServlet
So how can he check them out himself when the seller HASN'T PROVIDED ISSUE NUMBERS! :D
Q: I took a look at the site you mentioned in your listing because the prices you quote are so high. It appears they are saying this is what a graded 10.0 mint condition copy of these books would be worth. That's probably accurate but your books haven't been graded 10.0 by CGC. Most of the books in your collection can be found on Ebay for 25-50 cents each. No one is going to pay the price you are asking, so you might want to save yourself the listing fees.
A: I am not grading my books at a 10. I think most are 9.4 to 9.8 some a lot lower, a few 9.9. These are not 50 cent books, most of them are NEW and UNREAD. I gaurantee you won't find books in this shape for 50 cents unless the seller is an idiot. Also you only see the catagory and not the book # so you don't know which books I have. If you want a list I will send you one! Also the prices on that sight are for non-certified books, if they were certified they would be worth much more money! Thanks
OH MY GOD! They aren't graded so they'll actually be WORTH MORE!
Q: Hello. You give total counts of issues within a title being offered, but no actual issue numbers. Do you have a list of titles and corresponding issues numbers for the books? Thanks!
A: I WILL SEND YOU A LIST.
Think the seller was losing his temper by this point?
Q: I have to agree most off these books are 25 to 50 cent books when your auction ends with no bids you may want to relist with no starting bid and no ridiculus buy it now price i've collected for 25 years your in for a serious reality check ps i don't see a book worth certifying
A: You haven't seen the list of books yet so how would you know what I have? These books will go back into storage before I let them go for 50 cents. If you want 50 cent books buy from someone that has 50 cent books instead of UNREAD MINT books!
Yep. :)

The "UK Edition"??? So is this original or not?
It's a copy of the Avengers No. 4 slightly amended for U. K. distribution: price in U. K. currency (9d instead of 12c) and the date removed. This is not, despite what the seller implies, an 'edition' - as I understand it, after printing the comic at a run of, say, 400, 000, the price would be changed and another however many run off to be shipped to the U. K. This would make it a variant of the actual 'first' edition, though I'd probably only laugh if anyone implied that such a variant had any value as such. To be fair to this seller, his description actually seems to imply that this comic should be worth less than it actually is - if someone said to me 'Avengers 4, U. K. edition' I'd think they meant the U. K. Marvel Avengers No. 4 from late 1973, worth maybe £2 (say $3) in nm if you were anxious to get hold of a copy - and, incidentally, reprinting the story in the U. S. No. 7, with a Dr Strange in the back. Compare an earlier eBay entry I linked to where some optimist was trying to flog a set of three random later issues at £10.
This may be more detail than you need, but I hope someone finds it interesting, useful or both...

Metamorpho, re your entry, I am somewhat confused by this seller. He states: Here is a rare opportunity to get in on a "potentially" very hot comic book investment opportunity before all heck breaks loose!!! The inverted commas around the word 'potentially' mean it's not potential but actual, surely? Plus:
The investment potential of the very 1st printing of "Deadworld" is staggering!!! Presumably why booksfantastik is/are trying to get rid of his/their copy? I always love this kind of thing.

Nope. Never got any of the UK versions down here. During World War II the Australian government was facing a US Dollar shortage so they enforced trade regulations to cope. Because of this situation comics from overseas were banned from importation. So what happened was the local comics industry grew to fill the void, though most of the ones published were black and white reprints of American Comics that were licenced by the publishers.
It wasn't until 1959 that the ban was lifted but it took many years for overseas issues to filter back into Australian shops.
I know, in my hometown, when growing up, that it wasn't until the mid to late 70's that I saw them appear, but even then most of the comics I bought were still the B&W reprints, (Eventually they changed to colour), until the early 80's.
As for UK stuff, we used to get the Walt Disney magazine, Century 21 (And others based on English TV properties), Eagle, Whizzer & Chips, Cheeky, Jackpot, 2000AD, Starlord, Action and stuff like that. Even the Annuals! But not the UK superhero reprints due to the local market.
I read all of these, as well as similar comics, but not those awful "girl" magazines like Jinty and Mandy. :)

You can tell he did this in the seventies when someone told him it was the next big thing. I will post it the next time it comes around again. My understanding is that those earlier Marvel issues (62-68ish) are concurrent with American releases, with English copyright info and pence pricing. Technically, if you have an Amazing 1, 12 cent or 9 pence, it is considered the same, except Overstreet does make the distinction, and I think a lot of collectors do too. I purposely avoid pence issues, as part of my anal retentive comic book regement.
And then later, in the seventies, they did "reprint" books, which is even more confusing.
Anyone with better information jump on in.

I think it's $29,000.00. The thing is, I won't make fun of this guy, but it's a lesson in what not to do for the rest of us. I know at the time, it sounded good, but in the days of reprints, cds, and trades, there's no sense in destroying silver and golden age books to "book em". The best way to preserve is archival grade mylar and buffers, not scissors, glue and thread.
Now as to the look; they look incredible. I wouldn't mind having some, but there's no real value. You would be better off ripping the covers off trades and doing them, and I''ve seen this done too. I saw an auction with the Cerebus trades all bound in hardcover and gilt in gold. Very nice look. That would be the way to go if you wanted to showcase a collection. Bind the trades.
If I see any of these again, I'll be sure to post em, for historical value. Which reminds me, if any of you guys have any Pop Hollinger books you would like to trade, I would be interested.

HUGE COMIC LOT COMPOSED OF 17 COMICS... BIDDING IS FOR THE ENTIRE LOT.. . HIGHEST BIDDER ADD 8.90 FOR SHIPPING DUE TO WEIGHT.
I don't think it's only the hype that's OTT.

Slam Bradley,
I honestly don't know if that's a reasonable amount the market is willing to bear or not, but seeing as how that much money could net you some of the originals, it seems out of hand.
I know us collectors are anal retentive, and always looking for that "one of a kind" item, but it seems to me that dealers (not all) have often exploited that.
Dave Sim calls it Desire and Demand, instead of Supply and Demand. I think he's right.

Just so everyone knows, I'm coming out. gschilljr is my best friend Jay. I'm Nate, and we've been friends going on 16 years now. We sell on Ebay and we buy on Ebay and we've been playing the stupid ebay auction game for over two years between ourselves. Many's the time we would be surfing and we would i.m. each other with one of these bad boys. I told Jay, wouldn't it be fun to play with others?
So, here we are. No points to bash this auction, cause I said I wouldn't. Finder's fee points- (just as good as regular points, redeemable at any, no just here.) 56 points to gschilljr!!!

...and to a set of Marvel Masterworks Spidey volumes - with their higher-grade paper. Are they up to No. 100 yet? I'd imagine the Essentials must be, and that's the way to go if what you want is to read the stories rather than collect or make an investment.
Semi-incidentally (nothing to do with Rod Stewart), I had vague-ish thoughts a couple of years back of having my Crime SuspenStories nm set bound.
Of course, that's a set of Gladstone/ Gemstone reprints from the 1990s. Which I can't imagine shall ever have any serious value.

Obviously, I should put this up on eBay as a complete set in nm of CrimeSuspenstories classic crime comics from the 1950s!! Individual issues of these classic comics mentioned in Senate investigations into juvenile delinquency sell for hundreds of pounds/dollars!! I believe in the free market and have no reserve on these rare items (less than 10, 000 copies an issue printed!!) and shall start bidding for 27 (yes, TWENTY-SEVEN!!) books at £100!!
Plus £27 postage and packing, insurance extra - I shall let you know the cost after you have won the auction.

Re those Spider-Man volumes, they must be worth something - can anyone give an estimate? And how would that compare to a non-bound run of the same issues in similar condition?
I did a little estimate based on Overstreet 2004 Guide grades Fair+, because each and every one of those books, pulled out of those volumes would have a spine full of needle holes, and tops, right sides and bottoms trimmed. I see no way they could go over GD in grade.
I was guessing the honest value of those books around $5,000.00. Imagine my surprise when I totaled up $2,450.00.
Again, the guy took an elegant antique sports car, ripped out the pristine ineteriors, and made a hooptie.
Do I think it's worth $2-10,000.00? Sure. To the right buyer who understands that he's buying a unique, one of a kind collectible, not an investment.

I don't understand what people are getting so bent out of shape for. First, these covers probably weren't "clipped"--my guess is the dealer bought a lot of unbagged comics and found some loose covers mixed in--it's happened to me.
Secondly, why not sell them? What should s/he do with them? What kind of uproar would there be if someone said "I found a half-dozen old Avengers covers and threw them out?"
And what to do with them? Who knows? Stick 'em on the wall in cheap frames. Decoupage them onto a coffee table.
And of course...No one's being forced to bid.
