Hi, this is my first time ever to start a thread, so I hope I do this right.

In the information on the next 2 issues of Batwoman, it does not mention Flamebird but it does mention Jacob Kane and some dreadful life or death situation. While it could be whatever is going on in the Chase subplot, it is also likely that Jacob may be waiting Bette 's fate in the hospital where she would be dumped after Chase's questioning in issue # 4.

Is it possible that Jacob is actually Bette's father, too? We've not really seen or heard anything of Bette's parents; its a black hole and has always been. But even in Detective stories, like Elegy, Jacob seems to be advocating for Kate and Bette's relationship as cousins. Could they actually be half-sisters, though?
Perhaps Jacob had an affair with the yet-unnamed brother's wife?
Bringing Bette and Kate closer to each other, could have been because of his guilt over what happened to his other daughter, Kate's twin.
In an interview with one or another of the creative persons of Batwoman, it was mentioned that Bette had/will have a profound backstory and one going forward.

Honestly, I'm really confused by Bette Kane these days.

I remember her as Bat-Girl (and named "Betty") pre-CoIE, and then she was changed to Flamebird (and went from Betty to Bette) in a Teen Titans Annual post-CoIE.

Then I stopped reading comic books for a while.

When I eventually started following comic books again, Bette came back in a Batwoman story in Detective Comics and was now now the niece of Kate Kane, the post-52 Batwoman. (She had been the niece of Kathy Kane, the pre-CoIE Batwoman.) But then I heard (didn't read) that Morrison brought back the Kathy Kane Batwoman in Batman Incorporated, and did she have a Bat-Girl with her? Is that Bat-Girl the same or a different person from Flamebird?

Actually, Bette and the current Batwoman, Kate, aren't niece and aunt, but cousins to one another. And yes, Kathy Kane with her Bat-Girl were shown in Batman, Inc. and Batman Last Rites issues via flashback, so Kathy had a niece. Betty and Bette may very well be the same person, making the current Flamebird a former Bat-Girl, but that was never laid out explicitly for readers before the relaunch, so it is even harder to say at this point.

It seems plausible that some of those relationships will be touched upon in Morrison's Batman: Leviathan series that is going to take place in the new, relaunched continuity.

I'm getting tired of waiting to see how this plays out - Betty/e = Bat-girl and/or Flamebird. I certainly have lots of speculation. Like Major Hoy I remember her, barely, from the old days, and some reprints that may have been around.
On the count of is she/isn't she, I just think there is so much back-story to be mined that I am surprized no one is going for it. Just the speculation between her and Robin, Dick Grayson. I just think there is some semi-esoteric reason that the original Bat-girl does not fully remember that career, and/or how she is treated by Dick, in both 'worlds' of her career. Must be some reason, I keep thinking.

But my original idea in posting this is to question the relationship between Jacob Kane and Bette Kane, as per the info on the next few issues he seems to be wracked by a life or death situation. I can only think that this involves his "niece" who may actually be his daughter in my theory...

As long as they don't kill her, and an unpowered blonde female likable character is prone to that for cheap shock value, I don't terribly mind. Some bigger roles, outside of Batwoman would be nice.
