I wasn't sure if there was a thread for this or not. If so I apologize. I just thought this was odd. Wonder if Gates is doing something else?

God, I hope that Gates is working on another DC project.
I can tolerate Liefeld's art but his writing?, no thanks. I guess I will drop Hawk & Dove after issue 5.

Yeah, I won't buy anything he draws, let alone something he's writing and drawing.
I'm curious how they anyone at DC thinks this is going to help the book though. I have no idea why Gates is off, but if they're looking to increase interest in the book I'd think they'd add a writer who is a draw and not rely solely on a guy who is so polarizing and most likely the reason the book isn't doing as well as it could be. I know I would have given it a try if just about any other artist had been on it.

I think with lower tier characters like Hawk & Dove, the sales are probably as good as they are gonna get (save from putting Morrison and JHWIII on it).
Believe it or not, it's probably Liefeld's name that is getting the book the numbers it has.
Although I'm sure the book has a few Sterling Gates fans.

While I'm sure that's absolutely true, I'm willing to bet he's also the reason it isn't doing as well as it could. I know a bunch of people (myself included) who just won't buy anything he draws. I've dropped books I normally get when he's done fill-ins and such...

I for one enjoy his art, but to each his own.
I do have a soft spot for Lee, Liefeld, and McFarlane though. As Amazing Spider-Man, New Mutants, and Uncanny X-Men were pivotal in my early comic collecting days.

I dont want to be infair on Rob because a lot of creators have surprised me with the New 52. Plus I have to say Rob has designed some memerable characters for Marvel.
Still his solo writing gigs have been less than spectacular, even though he does bring his personal bran of 90's lack of subtlety to his writing that can be kind of fun sometimes.
I doubt it would be enough tomake me pick up the book when he takes over though.
Saying that I dont know what the hell Gates was doing with the first few issue because they kind of stank.

Right, I'm not saying the guy doesn't have fans (in either his writing or his art), but you have to admit (and DC has to know) that he's one of the most polarizing creators in comics - I'd go as far as to say that he's the living embodiment of "love him or hate him."
But then again, maybe that's why they're letting him write it. Maybe they don't think any writer will out draw all the people who just don't like Liefeld?

I support Hawk & Dove despite how horrible this will end. I just hope Liefeld doesn't pair the two off as a romantic couple. If that happens then I'm done with the series. Otherwise I can stomach things for now.

Reading the article I may give this title another shot at #6

He does have fans. I was one of those guys that was blown away by his work on X-Force back in the day. Its a retro thing I think. Sadly I was more a fan of his artwork than his writing. I picked up Youngblood excited as hell only to be hellishly disapointed.
Truth is being an artist does not make you automatically a good writer.
Some guys have the gift of being both. Very few though.
Still you have to think that ben in the industry this long will teach you a trick or two. So yeah I may pick up his first issue. If nothing else he's a bit of a guilty pleasure. And kudos to him for going for less splash pages.

Yeah it sounds like he's actually going to try and address a lot of issues fans have with comics today - mainly length/reading time. I just wonder about DC's choice in letting him write and draw the book.
I wish him the best though.

i wonder if the extra time required to write the book will cut into all of the work/effort he pours into the background art/pencils in Hawk and Dove. it has been quite a while since i have seen such highly detailed interior pages....

I was dropping this anyway - it's like I must be precognitive or something. Sterling's writing has not been good on this. Here's hoping that he finds a title or character that he's a little more comfortable with.
