Ok, maybe this question has already been answered...but I'm kind of new to reading comics (read some but don't know much) and I picked up some of the New 52 titles. I'm currently reading Action Comics, Superboy, Batman, Detective Comics, Nightwing, Teen Titans and Flash. Now, the Superboy and Teen Titans stories seem to have the same storyline but from different perspectives and apparently some information of Action Comics is going to be part of the Superman title (something like that). Do I have to start reading new titles because they are going to be important in the storylines of the current titles I'm reading?
On a different note, what other titles would you recommend I start reading from the New 52?

It seems like Teen Titans, Superboy, Legion Lost, and Red Hood will have some degree of crossover with one another. Personally, I'd drop them all, along with Detective and Nightwing. Scott Lobdell comics will rot your brain. You'll be happier with Batwoman, Wonder Woman, Animal Man, and Swamp Thing. And you should be fine reading Action without reading Superman.

No I would not say you have too, I think the most Action is talked about in Superman was in number 3 where they talked about the Superman in Action comics and how he got his start. I think at some point there could be a crossover event for Action and Superman, but not any time soon I think the writers this time are trying to make it so you dont have to read one title to get the other. With Supeboy and Teen Titans I think its the same thing, you will see Superboy fight them in his book but I dont think it will continue in Teen Titans, though if you are reading both I say keep reading both.
As far as other titles? Birds of Prey is getting GOOD so I recommend that one. I like Red Lanterns its good. Voodoo as well!

I don't think Red Hood will have anything to do with Superboy or Titans? As where did you get Legion Lost from? Just wondering.

I am seriously considering on picking up Animal Man!
Birds of Prey does sound interesting...I should start picking up on female characters...
I'm a real Batman fan so...what about Batman and Robin or Batwing (seems interesting but...I'm not really sure if it's going to be good for long)
I've also read some good things about Justice League but I'm not sure if I should pick it up...I'm not really a big fan of Wonder Woman or Aquaman so, what do you recommend?

You don't need to read something else unless it says... "Continued in..."
Different books referring to the same things are just a bonus if you're reading both books, it's not nessicary to read both.

Birds of Prey, like I said great pick! Batwing is good, GREAT art. I am not a big fan of Batman and Robin, but it is good, but its not my thing. Justice League is great! And its not just about Wonder, and Aquaman so that should even it out if you want to pick that up!
Thought I remembered Lobdell hinting at it.
I can't recall that, but I dont think it will happen, at least not right away.

DC is trying to make each book stand up for themselves. Any crossovers will be perspective crossovers from what I am guessing because they want you to be able to pick up a trade without being confused with crossovers.
And yeah pick up everything you like. Don't listen to people here telling you what to like and not like.

Good choice of books. I've heard good things about all of them, but change Detective Comics to Batman and Robin, which I've read and is really rather interesting and DC from what I've heard is gratuitous violence.
I read both Superboy and Teen Titans, and there was an announcement that they will crossover with Legion Lost. I have no intention of buying that, more due to budgetary constraints and not knowing any of the characters than anything else, however Teen Titans so far has done a good job of explaining any details needed to be known in Superboy, so I imagine everything needed to enjoy one or two books in that crossover without the others will be explained. However the authors of those books, Lobdell and Nieceza are old X-men hands from the 90s and worked together to write most of the Age of Apocolypse crossover, so it should be worth getting at least in trades if it is half as good. Don't listen to any of the 90s or Lobdell hate, both are quite good. I enjoy Lobdell's work greatly, though Red Hood is his best book. Really don't listen to the hate about that, issues 2 and 3 were epic.
You never have to buy a book you don't want to. If worse comes to worse, go to any number of spoilerriffic threads to clue you in. Wikipedia is pretty good for ruining or enlightening you about storylines. Quick hint, never go on the page of a book or character if you aren't completely up to date.

Jeff lemere wrote the best animal man imo. You should pick it up. All those other choices sounds fantastic. I bought all 52 for the first 3 months, and im not dropping anyone of which that you mention.
Also, you dont need any other titles to enjoy reading a book. There may be crossovers in the future but it doesnt affect your enjoyment if you dont pick up the other issues.

I wouldn't bother unless, perhaps, there is a direct connection between the two titles - a story continued in another book, for example - and only then if you really enjoyed that story. I will occassionally cross over and get an issue of a book I don't normally get if one of my favorite characters has a significant appearance, but that's about it.

I started out with 14 titles and I am narrowing it down to 9 or 10. I cut out firestorm because Im not enjoying the story as much as I hoped, I cut Hawkman because although I like the character the book itself isnt doing it for me, and I cut bluebeetle for the same reason. I cut Justice league because I wasnt enjoying it as much as I wanted and cutting it made room for Avenging spiderman.
Right now in my pull I have 3 spiderman titles and
Aquaman
Batman
Batman and Robin
The Flash
Grifter
Green Lantern
Green Lantern new Guardians
Nightwing
Teen Titans
The problem I am having is whether or not to keep captain atom and add Batgirl, or nix them both. On a side note, and this will totally make me sound crazy, if I nix captain atom and dont add anything I have will have 12 titles in my pull but Ill get 13 issues a month (spidey comes twice a month). I dont like getting 13 of anything. If I keep atom then I will have 13 titles on my pull and get 14 comics a month. Like I said I dont like the number 13, and yes I know I sound crazy.
13 aside, would yall keep captain atom, or ditch em and add Batgirl (bat family fans out there), or neither.
If you're not enjoying it, ditch it. I'm personally enjoying Batgirl. Don't want the unlucky 13, why not add something else new in it's place? You're keeping Grifter, which will be crossing over with Voodoo and Stormwatch in issue 6, and I strongly suspect a new Wildcats series will be the result, there you go, repalcement book you can get in on the ground floor with. Or just get Voodoo, it's been pretty good, and a new writer begins on issue 4, so ought to be a good jump-on point.
spideroffaith77
11-29-2011, 09:46 AM
Ive checked out Voodoo, its ok, but not worth adding at the moment I think. A new wildcats team based comic would be slammin, I could get behind that, if done right of course.
The problem with captain atom is that its a great concept, infinite power will it corrupt or not, but the story itself is so slow!! Plus, and this may sound unimportant, I just dont like the character design, the weird hair alone bothers me. Im an artist/teacher so the visuals are very important to me.
Thats one of the reasons I am considering Batgirl, I like the look of the book.

I'd say Batwoman, not Batgirl, it gets consistently vastly superior reviews, and has a main character I personally far prefer. Batgirl also suffers from replacing my favourite series from before the reboot.
Captain Atom I have no clue about. Buy an issue and see if you like it, I suppose.

Disagree. Quality is subjective. How does one determine objective quality? It's impossible. No matter how hard the pluralistic society of today tries to tear it down, there is a critical establishment for a reason, made up of people who spend their lives becoming experts in a field, whose job it is to study and explicate works of art. I think something that is being misunderstood about my position is this misconception that I think MY taste equals GOOD taste. I don't.
To return to the alcohol example, there can be absolutely no argument that Pabst Blue Ribbon is not a very good beer. In fact, it's one of the worst, from a technical, objective standpoint. But I prefer to drink PBR and High Life and Budweiser, because I don't have very good taste in beer. And wine? My goodness, the garbage I buy would make a bum turn his nose up. When it comes to beer and wine, my preference for terrible choices borders on firm dedication. Someone once told me about a regional crap-beer called Fat Cat, available up north, and I drove to Minnesota to get a 12-pack. When I got it home, the flavor would have sent even the most uninitiated beer snob into a deep depression! The liquid itself had an orange coloration, and not from food coloring. I loved it.
On the other hand, I am a lover of fine whiskeys, gins, brandys, liqour in general, to be honest. I've been known, on very uncommon occasion, to spend significant sums on well-aged cognac for my cabinet. The liquor I drink is objectively good, although of course one doesn't use the finer stuff on mixed drinks. But for drinking straight up? The liquors I prefer are objectively better than a ten-dollar handle of Old Crow. Now you may not prefer them; that is your opinion, and is of course subjective. But the quality of these liquors, as compared to what you find on the bottom shelf, is not up for debate.

If you say so. I fail to see how Wonder Woman is objectively better than Superboy, however. Perhaps if you explained about comics and not booze.1) A fresher approach to the art.
2) A less recycled plot.
3) More varied, believable, and original characterizations.
4) It has an elegant simplicity of plot, character, and setting. Superboy attempts to distract the reader from its lack of originality with unnecessary and unhelpful complexity, while Wonder Woman does not have to shy away from what it is.
5) At every point in Wonder Woman when Azzarello could opt for a cliched writing device, he avoids it. At every point when Chiang could go for a cliched visual choice, he eschews it. This cannot be said for Lobdell and Silva on Superboy.
6) By choosing to reject the modern writing paradigm of story arcs without giving (or, apparently, having) any particular reason for doing so, Lobdell is casting his lot with a firmly regressive style. This isn't like when Palmiotti and Gray did mostly one-and-dones for Jonah Hex, because they told those stories in a style that demanded it, and their approach to the character demanded it. What Lobdell is doing here is telling us that he's rejecting the last 25 years of writing progress in comics.
7) What Azzarello is doing is mythic storytelling of an iconic character, injecting his stories with real emotion, real depth, real craft. Lobdell is just mixing up typical soapy melodrama, angst, action, and pointless faux complexity the same way he's always done.

Jono, you read waaaay to much into this.
Can we just go back to the original topic?
And instead of telling a new reader what he shouldn't read, why don't tell him what to read, so when he as a lot of books he can decide by himself.
Also, when people give an advice to what to read, it should be an advice based on how good it is.
Good advice: "Read X because is beautiful-intelligent-fun."
Bad advice: "Read X because Y sucks."

For the sake of argument, I fail to see how you can compare the quality of alcohol to the quality of comics in such a way. Your crap beer costs significantly less than your fine liquor. Superboy and Wonder Woman cost the same. If Superboy cost $2 per issue and Wonder Woman cost $10 per issue then your comparison would have some merit, but that isn't the case.
Back to the original post, I wouldn't worry about tie-ins. For example, Kyle Rayner appeared in Voodoo this month but the story is completely unrelated to New Guardians. Teen Titans and Superboy have a strong link but each offers a complete story of their own and neither is essential to understanding the other. Read what you like and consider the possible tie-in a bonus.
As for individual recommendations, it is too hard to say. From my point of view, Batman and Robin is a better Batman book than Detective Comics at the moment. I'm also fond of Resurrection Man, Voodoo, All-Star Western and Legion Lost. You may disagree however. My advice is to read previews for those comics that interest you, most of which can be found on this site, and decide from there.

I would recommend The Flash because the art work is stunning. And its unique among the other titles. It has a fresh look to it. I will admit here thought that Im biased because the Flash is my favorite super hero.
I would also recommend Batman. The artist here has gone back to that playboy image of Bruce Wayne and yet with the writing you still get the sense that Batman could crush you with his mind alone.
Personally I dont like Wonder Woman do to the style of art. I think its well done, but the style itself doesnt fit in with what I like.
On a side note, I did pick up the 3 back issues of Batgirl and fell in love with it!!! I am pumped to add this to my pull list. Gail Simmones writing really impressed me. Batgirl has this funny sense about herself, she is honest about her fears and jokes along with them, its fun to read. Its one of the few 52 books that doesnt feel like a fast read, and I love that.
I hope the original poster finds some books to enjoy.

I know right, get a girl out of the wheel chair and people get all mad about it. The writting for me is what sells it. I like the art work too, but the way simmone is writing her really works for the character and what she has been through. Do you think Batgirl is more disliked more by guys or girls, or do you think the angst is equal among all readers. And for that matter why do you think she is not well received?

Both I guess. Cos Steph fans are still pissed that she took back the mantle and just when Cass fans thought Cass would go back to being batgirl after Steph got booted, Barbara got the spot. Perhaps, quite a few birds of prey fans also that loved oracle and to see her going back to being batgirl felt like a betrayal.
Several comments were that Simone haven't showed how Babs recovered, so they're still pissed, they expect everything to be covered in 1 issue. I'll say pretty much everyone. But pissed as they are, many of them are still reading it. Its after all the first few books that went above 100k.

It is easy online to raise objections to everything, whether those objections are well-founded or baseless; but it is difficult to discuss things constructively. All the people who don't like something have to do is make one objection after another without making a real stake, and the people who like it then expend a great amount of time trying to answer it.

too true, too true.
oh and I forgot to mention one, Teen Titans, this book is good because its just fun. It doesnt take itself too seriously, and I missed that about comic books. Plus the art work is pretty on point. Im not crazy about the bunker character, but Tim Drake's current Red Robin is really well done, I personally like the costume.

Touche. Sometimes I get so carried away trying to defend the books I love that I forgot haters are still gonna hate no matter how many times you try to convince them.

good point, I have admittadly caught myself feeling very angry over some punk who wont listen to reason. Then I remember "some people just like to argue for the sake of arguing" then I go back to my happy place and think about all the reasons I love comic books.
