Does anyone know what Mark Bagley's first pro job was? (Either as inker or penciller?) It looks like it may have been Nightmask #9, but I am not certain. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks,
Jeff

It's either that one or Star Brand 10, which both shipped July of '87.

trivia: He got his first job thanks to the Offical Marvel Try Out Book.
or whatever it was called....
it was a book that needed pages scripted, penciled inked coloured lettered etc.
I believe you then sent it in to marvel to show'em what you got and Bagley won the contesty type thing and a job.

I thought he used to be a hitman for the Mob? Or was that Millar?

I thought his first pro work was what if #4 which was of course, a result of the try out book. You'd think that since he's basically been a Marvel mainstay for the 20 years since that they would have done it again...

Wasn't his first pro work the backup stories in the Evolutionary War annuals?

No, those came a couple of years later.

I was rereading some old Marvel comics recently and they had the list of winners from that contest on the Bullpen page. They had 8 catergories (Or give or take a couple) and Bagley was the only name I recognised (not to say the others aren't still in the industry..I just been aware of them)
I guess it was a lot of work to do, and getting one person out of it really wasn't worth doing it again. think of legal paperwork involved nowadays.
On another note, has Bagley ever done any non-Marvel comics?

Origionally he prostituted his body out to buy crack, thank God Marvel rescued him from that aweful career. :D

No, he has been Marvel Exclusive since Day 1. He has done regular books as New Warriors, Amazing Spider-man, Thunderbolts, Ultimate Spider-man, and the Pulse. I may have missed a few other books there, but to me, these have been his main stay books since he first came at marvel. I met him years ago when he first started comics. He was really cool and one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He was a brand new gushing comic guy in the field. I feel he is one of Marvel Top talents and has proved that Marvel did the right thing in there contest. I wish they would do more. We need more people like Mark Bagley in Comics today.

I seem to recall one of the POWER COMPANY oneshots at DC was done by Mark. I can't remember which one, though. And yeah, his work ethic is matched by very few, John Romita JR being the major one that really comes to mind.

Bagley has awesome work ethic. Bagley, Romita JR, and Sal Larroca, are all capable of penciling 2 books a month, and will meet deadlines better doing so than 98% of the rest of the artists in the business can do on 1 book per month.

Scott Kollins, Tom Grummet, Patrick Zircher (sp?) are a few more.

I always loved his Amazing Spiderman. He drew a good Peter Parker...shame he never got a big final Issue to say good-bye.

That sadly seems to be an across the board thing for him, quiet goodbye on and just penciling cover of the next issue after he's quit the title (New Warriors, Amazing, Thunderbolts)

I just found a comic book that's 4 months older then Nightmask #9 that has art by Mark, and it's not a Marvel comic. O_o It's called After Apocalypse #1 There was only one issue made and then the company dissappeared.

Beat me to it, because I was just about to post that. I didn't remember the number, but I remembered that it was Nightmask that I first remembered seeing the guy that won the try-out book draw.
