View Full Version : Best DC Comics from the 80s and 90s

I was thinking more in terms of runs, not necessarily a single story like Batman: Year One or Watchmen.

What are some of the best runs of the 1980s and 1990s in DC Comics?

Levitz' Legion around the Great Darkness Saga, plus a year before and a couple of years after were pretty awesome.

In the 90s, if you count them as DC, almost all the Milestone books were stellar: Static, Blood Syndicate, Hardware, Icon, Shadow Cabinet, Kobalt, Deathwish, Heroes, Wise Son...

Y'know, one that I was recently reminded of when I found a couple issues in a bargain bin was "Thriller" by Robert Loren Fleming and Trevor von Eeden. It only went like 12 issues. I remember picking up the first couple issues back in the day when I was teenager and really taking to them. It was sort of a secret society thing, where the primary type of power was psychic, but it was more a secret agent save the world Invisibles type of thing. I never read how it ended (or if it was discontinued), but I'm in the process now of trying to find them all.

I read one of the two issues I found, and it has held up very well over time.

Here's some covers. The first two images are the issues I picked up...

Good answer. I hope to see more like it. None of that "still relevant" and/or "groundbreaking achievement" crap. What was actually fun to read back then? Is it still fun to read now? That's what I wanna know.

I also really enjoyed Andy Helfer and Kyle Baker's run on The Shadow...

Great scripting and art. Dark humor interspersed with silly light-hearted moments. Both cerebral and whimsical. I've always liked when Helfer and Baker team up.

Hey, thanks.

And I agree with you about 'fun' being an element that sometimes can get forgotten when sizing a title up.

Both Legion of Superheroes and Teen Titans stole the show in the 80's.
Deservedly so, for the most part.
The two titles were also the first to get upgraded paper and color in what they called "baxter" format.
Seemed really cool at the time, now the colors look a bit garish on the slick paper compared to what we've grown accustomed to over the years.

By 1988, there was a little cross-over book called Invasion.
Not many people seem to recall it fondly; but it gave us one of the greatest books of the early 90's:
L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 (year changed yearly, duh. )
Had an incredible amount of talent in both writing and art and some of the best stories from any comics company at the time.
Issues 1- 50 read almost like one story; even though it was a lot of little ones; the build for the overall arc was what kept us coming back for more.

Jumping farther on is Starman; following the less than stellar() mini-series Zero Hour.

Tons of good stuff over the 2 decade period, but as a fan of teams; those are what usually stick out for me.
Honorable mentions have to go to a series called Black Condor; a complete re-imagination of the old Freedom Fighter character.
Ooh, also The Ray.
Forgot Infinity Incorporated, as well.
Geez I could do this for hours. . .

Thanks for this post! I was a huge fan of Thriller. Fleming created strong characters and an engaging plot, but it was Trevor Von Eeden's artwork that sold this book. It was so underrated, it was criminal. The art was incredible! I was sad when this book got canned. It deserved better.

I actually picked up the first three issues from a $.50 bin a few months ago, and they held up quite well. VonEeden, in particular, turns in some great work.

The best of the '80s for me were:

Levitz/Giffen/Lightle Legion of Superheroes

Moore/Veitch/Bissette/Totleben Swamp Thing

O'Neil/Cowan The Question

Delano/various Hellblazer

Helfer/Sienkiewicz/Baker The Shadow

Morrison/Truog Animal Man

Morrison/Case dOOM pATROL

Gaiman/various Sandman

Ostrander/Yale/various Suicide Squad

Matt Wagner The Demon

Mishkin/Colon Blue Devil

Milligan/Ewins/Dillon Skreemer

Moore/Lloyd V for Vendetta

Buried Alien

I was always a fan of the 1980s edition of DC COMICS PRESENTS. Touring the DC Universe monthly with Superman was a great way to meet some lesser-known characters who didn't have their own titles and weren't members of any of the major active teams.

1990s, I'd go with (limiting it to only Vertigo books set in the DCU):

Milligan/Bachalo Shade, the Changing Man

Robinson/Smith The Golden Age

Robinson/Harris/Snejberg Starman

Giffen/Bierbaum Legion of Superheroes (5yr Gap)

Ostrander/Mandrake The Spectre

Wagner/Seagle/Davis Sandman Mystery Theatre

Priest/Porter/Johnson The Ray

Legends of the Dark Knight: Morrison/Janson Gothic, Matt Wagner Faces, Robinson/Sale Blades, JF Moore/Russell Hothouse, Bryan Talbot Masks

JF Moore/Guinan Chronos

Chaykin/Garcia-Lopez Twilight

Chaykin/JF Moore/Mignola Ironwolf: Fires of the Revolution

Ennis/Simpson/Dillon Hellbllazer

Jenkins/Phillips Hellblazer

Ennis/McCrea Hitman

Peyer/Morales Hourman

Morrison/Porter JLA

Giffen/Grant/Kitson L.E.G.I.O.N. (technically starts in '89)

Waid/various The Flash

A few more I've thought of:

1980s

Wolfman/Colon Nightforce

Grell/Hannigan Green Arrow (especially Long Bow Hunters)

Tim Truman Hawkworld

DeMatteis/Giffen Dr Fate

1990s

DnA/Guice Resurrection Man

Johnson/Williams III Chase

Millar/Hester Swamp Thing

Gaiman/Bolton/Hampton/Vess/Johnson Books of Magic

Ney Reiber/Gross Books of Magic (especially when Peter Gross goes solo)

It should have been canned when Robert Loren Fleming quit. Those later issues are terrible, especially when Von Eeden left. This was a case of a team putting everything they had into the book, and when they left, their replacements couldn't catch that lightning in a bottle.

The mini-series that launched the ongoing book was pretty dead serious...

http://onceuponageek.com/images/87drfate_c.jpg

I've been trying to find DC's in-house ad for the DeMatteis/McManus ongoing which did, in fact, promise a more lighthearted romp, but honestly it was still a pretty serious book about life, love, destiny/fate and karma (with plenty of sorcery)...

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ih57i6e8euk/TL4P98eupQI/AAAAAAAABFc/KGxoJcJwvKI/s1600/dr_fate_2.jpg

DC really played up the goofy-looking dog in the ads, but DeMatteis was still really into the Eastern mysticism elements in his writing. The book was sold as a bit off-kilter in its humor, but it definitely had a serious tone. This cover below is a good reflection of the book's actual content...
http://clzimages.com/comic/large/ae/ae_35819_0_DoctorFateVol210TheDeathofInno.jpg

The Dr. Fate back-ups by Keith Giffen that appeared in The Flash were incredible--like a DC version of Doctor Strange. And they have been collected in TPB previously. Absolutely not to be missed.

Mark Waid's Flash - A historic run I will never grow tired of championing, from "The Return of Barry Allen" to "Terminal Velocity" to "Dead Heat" to "Chain Lightning."

Mark Waid's Impulse - Possibly better than his Flash.

Ron Marz's Green Lantern - I appreciated Hal Jordan at the time, but Kyle Rayner became my generation's GL, and it was to the expert handling of Kyle's formative development from Marz that made it possible.

Chuck Dixon's Robin - Tim Drake benefited a great deal from having a strong narrative thrust from the beginning, but Dixon took it to another level, and was the most interesting Batman material post-"Knightfall."

Dixon's Nightwing - Until that point best-known for being a Teen Titan, Dick Grayson graduated into his own man with Dixon and McDaniel's dynamic vision of his solo career.

Karl Kesel's Superboy - From Adventures of Superman to his own book, Superboy had an ideal creative team in Kesel and Tom Grummett, whose second, Kirby-inspired run was probably better.

Karl Kesel's Superboy and the Ravers - A series that was overlooked at the time, but was easily one of the best team books ever published.

Primal Force - One of the great books that had a cult following but still doesn't get the respect it's due.

I thought it was a pretty good book. The premise was more interesting than the execution, in my opinion, mostly because the artist was all over the place. It did make Jack O'Lantern an interesting character, though.

Seagle's '90s masterpiece was House of Secrets. That book is completely overlooked.

Love this post! The 80s and 90s were a great time for DC, even though I thought that Marvel was a little better during same period. A few of my all time favorite runs are found during this time, including (80s first):

- John Ostrander/Tim Truman/Graham Nolan's Hawkworld run (the mini was great too)
- Ostrander's Suicide Squad
- Grell's Green Arrow
- Perez' Wonder Woman
- Byrne/Jurgens/Ordway Superman
- Grant/Breyfogle Batman
and All-Star Squadron and early issues of Infinity Inc by Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway

90s:
- Jurgens/Ordway/Stern Superman
- Moench/Aparo/Dixon/Nolan Batman
- Ron Marz' Green Lantern
- John Byrne's Wonder Woman
- Mark Waid's Flash

Great stuff across the board, basically. I will say though, that I never got into a few other runs everyone pines about during this era, most notably Denny O'Neil's Question and Peter David's Aquaman (although I loved the Atlantis Chronicles). Still, post-Crisis DC was the best the company has ever been, IMHO.

That is very true, with the caveat that he's definitely best on titles he's developed by himself. When he takes on established books and characters, the work's not just at that same level. He's a lot like Pete Milligan in that.

My former opinion was the same as yours: I loved the first year or so of Alpha Flight until Rouleau came on, then I found it tough to read because the art was so busy. Recently, I reread those issues, and I found them far stronger than what I had previously though. I still think Rouleau was a poor choice as that storyline with Aurora, Modred the Mystic, and the Brass Bishop was quite dark, but I've softened a bit on it being nigh-unreadable. I wish I could step in a time machine and convince them to put have put Leo Manco on the book.

As long as Kitson was on the book, L.E.G.I.O.N was quite good, especially Alan Grant's third year through issue 40. After Barry left (issue 50, I think?), the book was okay, but not up to the standards of the first few years, even with writers like Mark Waid and Tom Peyer.

Or anyone else for that matter. The conspiracy theorist in me always thinks publishers sabotage my favorite books by putting crappy writers/artists on them...

But it's been a long time since I've revisited those issues. No doubt Seagle's writing holds up, but since my tastes have matured I might find Rouleau's chicken scratch tolerable now.

A few more I've thought of:

1980s

Wolfman/Colon Nightforce

I'm glad you mentioned that one. I've been seeing issues of that title lately in bargain bins, but have passed on them thus far. I vaguely remember reading the title as a teenager, but can't remember whether I liked it or not then. I'm definitely gonna pick some of those issues up now when I hit the stores this weekend.

Y'know, that Wolfman/Colon team always kinda put me off at first blush. I think I just don't like that fuzzy style of art on the face of things. Just a hard-boiled detective story set in the depression era. There were at least a couple story arcs, but I'm not sure that this went on long enough to be considered a "run". Something I'll have to look into.

It should have been canned when Robert Loren Fleming quit. Those later issues are terrible, especially when Von Eeden left. This was a case of a team putting everything they had into the book, and when they left, their replacements couldn't catch that lightning in a bottle.

Based on the last few issues, they evidently couldn't have caught that lightning while pole dancing outside in a thunderstorm.

Seriously, those first 7-8 issues of Thriller were truly great.

But as a public service though, I repeat the warning about those last four issues.

Looks like our tastes are VERY similar!
I'd also throw in The Ray was a blast.
The Superman titles were great when they were overhauled.
It's the one of the few things Loeb has written that I enjoyed.

But the thing is, I always come around on it and grow to like it quite a bit once I get acclimated to the style. For instance, one of my favorite DC titles from the 80s was another Colon project, teamed-up with Don MacGregor, a title called Nathaniel Dusk...

Zero hour as a crossover itself was fairly average - not the worse , not the best , mainly used as a plot device to kill off and put the JSA into retirement.

Like i have said a few times before in other threads , it's some of the zero hour tie-in issues that were more interesting than the main crossover.
Some of the multiverse/other realities start seeping into the main DCU reality and you get superman meeting batmans from all the different eras - frank miller batman , bob kane batman , dick sprang batman , neal adams batman etc.
Or post-crisis superboy meeting his pre-crisis or similiar counterpart ..
Or batman and robin encounters the original golden age bumbling fat alfred.
Or batman encountering a reality where bruce wayne as a kid was killed instead of his parents.

Alan Grant's run on Batman was awesome. Chuck Dixon breathed new life into Robin and Nightwing in the 90's. Mark Waid's run on the Flash had some of the most poetic, romantic and beautiful dialogue in comics and Garth Ennis' Hitman had the exact opposite in a good way haha

I read that Batman issue #400.
Selina Kyle/Catwoman was one of his allies. She wasn't his enemy back then. She was still in the reformed, crime-fighting stage before Joker kidnapped and converted her to having a villain personality again with the cat-scan mind machine.

That was shortly before the retcon with new Catwoman origins in Batman: Year 1 series which started with issue #404.

Wolfman/Perez - New Teen Titans

We saw some of Breyfogle's newer work recently in one of the RETROACTIVE specials issued during the summer. His style has changed a bit since his 1990s DC heyday...gotten lighter and more "cartoony" than it was previously.

Buried Alien (The Fastest Post Alive!)

Probably because most of his recent work was for Archie.

Justice League was always a great title. This arc, with the New Gods crossover, started great and was the end of an era with this being the last issue that Dick Dillin produced being his death. George Perez picked up from there and between him and Gerry Conway, JLA was magic with issues # 183-186, 192-197, and capping with the fantastic # 200 issue. It didn't hurt that # 193 also had the 16 page free insert with the first appearance of the All-Star Squadron.

Spinning out of Invasion, this series makes perfect sense and had an all-star team that made this series ahead of its time. Alan Grant and Keith Giffen on story with Barry Kitson art. One of DC's best sci-fi series of all time. Vastly underrated.

The Legion is probably my favorite team book ever, and this title was great, really feeling like teens in the future. Tom & Mary Bierbaum really nailed the core concept of the team and Chris Sprouse gives us one of the best visuals on the group ever.

All those books are not drawn by Ernie Colon, but by "Gentleman" Gene Colan.

I thought Gene did the art on both Nightforce and Nathaniel Dusk. Where did Ernie get mentioned?

I'd like to get into the Starman run, but I have some questions.

How many issues were there?

Are they expensive?

Should I just go for the trades?

How many trades are there?

I know it's somehow connected with Zero Hour, but I plan on buying that anyway, no matter how many times I get "Don't buy Zero Hour!" replies

I'm just now starting to get into Starman also. The trades look like the best deal, from what I've seen so far. Though I'm interested in Robinson's run on it mainly, so there might be a different approach to take for others.

I'm really happy with what I've read so far.

Cheers.

Cheers.

You and the other poster both spelled the name Colon, not Colan and did not mention first names, so I was being a bit of a smart-ass, as there is an artist named Colón from that period. You were clearly just disrespecting Gentleman Gene by spelling his name wrong, though.

This, to me, is when the Legion really started on it's path to greatness. I Superboy connection to the current DCU is awesome, and putting Kal in a group of super powered teens helps to give him peers and knock him down a few pegs, but, he's still young Superman, the biggest, baddest there is. I could never shake that feeling when Superboy and Supergirl were there. I love em both in the Legion, but more on an irregular basis, like the Phantom Stranger used to pop in and out as needed here and there in the older issues of JLA. The characters started to feel more fully realized and less like part of a formula. The book gears up when Pat Broderick comes on, and then really kicks in when Giffen climbs aboard.

At the time, this first issue was very anti-climatic and the artwork was kind of abrasive. My first reading of this single issue wasn't positive and broken hearted I passed on subsequent issues. A couple years later I'm trading with a friend who also hated these issues but had up to the first 14 so I thought I'd give em a shake and read the first year's worth consequtively. Blown away is all I can say. When people talk about giving a title 1 or 2 issues to find it's way, this is the title that comes back to me. This title shook the Legion harder than it had ever been, but it was great. To this day, this is my favorite version and I honestly love them all. Don't be fooled into thinking after # 38 (the destruction of the earth) that the title nose dives. It does not. A different team comes on and it was still great IMO. This series, including the preview in DC Comics Presents # 26, was awesome. There's a reason why this title gave the X-Men a run for their money in the 80's. Marv Wolfman and George Perez, both with distinguished runs at Marvel, really brought their A-game to DC and revitalized this franchise.

Technically, this is the continuation of the New Teen Titans series as a new sister title, utilizing the previous New Teen Titans title, launches as a direct sales only title. The title didn't quite have the same sizzle after the 50th anniversary title IMO.

Everyone knows about Alan Moore's run on this title, and it's great of course, but I want to include the original preceding 20 issues here too. While not as legendary, with good work carrying on the original feel of the Wein / Wrightson issues written by Marty Pasko and art by Tom Yeates and then Stephen Bissette. Technically this is Saga of the Swamp Thing and with # 39 officially truncates back simply to Swamp Thing. The run ranges from legendary to good but it's all worth getting.

What is and isn't strictly in continuity as of today is debatable, but, this series from the 80's was great. Each issue re-examined classic origins by contemporary artists with an occasional work by Golden and Silver Age greats. Loved the entire run.

Then on re-reading a few years later and finding out what the Legion were like BEFORE this and how pure they were and what they had become.. man, to this day it is still one of my favourite runs in all of comics. The confrontation between Mon El and the Time Trapper - wow!

Valor, or Mon-El as he was previously known, was sort of the future similar version of Superboy. You probably wouldn't expect this to be anything except a blatant rip-off, but this was a great series that got even better with time. I was crushed when Zero Hour approached and it ceased to exist.

I grew up on covers with word balloons, so I found the so called "iconic covers" of heroes striking self-important poses a lot tackier.

This series had a couple of different updates and follow up including a series dedicated specifically to the Legion of Super-Heroes. What's neat about this series is that it gives a nice background and concise history and gives visuals that were made specifically for this series either by artists famous for their renditions of that character, or another artist in an homage to a previous well known version.

Seriously, the artists on this series are like a who's who of the industry itself including, but not limited to

For some reason I never realized Blue Beetle had his own series, was it any good?

Technically, it probably wasn't one of the best series to come out of Crisis, because Len Wein wrote him as the Charlton character instead of updating him to feel like a DC character,
Paris Cullins did a great Steve Ditko inspired Beetle, without it looking like he was ripping him off.
Oddly, Beetle seemed to be developed more in JLI than his own book, but this was nice simple heroics.
