who do you have? What do you want? Where do you get it? How much do you pay?

I have a George Perez Fantastic Four piece... from #164 page 17

As well as a Jim Aparo piece from Adventure Comics #441 pg 7

An autographed Yannick Paquette piece from Codename: Knockout #11 pg 7

John Buscema piece from Avengers #270 page 10

Steven Butler piece from Silver Sable #25 pg 27

And a page from Deathstroke the Terminator #37 pg 21... it's signed but I can't make out the sifgnature... anyone know who the artist is??? My comics are 3000 kms away so I can't look it up...

I got the Perez, Buscema and Aparo for $100.00 combined (I use to own a comic store and the guy I bought them from wanted cash for smokes!!! I kid you not!)

Paid $60 for the Paquette at a con, and got the Silver Sable and Deathstroke for $10 each also at a con

Not the best pictures... but here's a couple of em

Perez is on the left and Buscema is on the righ

Aparo is on the left and Paquette is on the right

Yes, sort of. But not really. I got a bunch of art from a guy called Grasso a while ago. I gave some of them as gifts, the others I've kept in a folder. I plan on framing a couple of them once I get my own place.

Here is my original art collection.

I love original art - just love it. My plan is to basically just buy art by my favourite artists when I can find it at the right price. I am often shocked when stuff from the late 60s/early 70s goes for less than stuff published last year.

I haven't bought much recently as prices have gone up. I wish I was buying this stuff 15 years ago when it went for a fraction of the cost. Most of this stuff was in the $25-$50 range. The most expensive thing I've got is the Rawhide Kid cover, which I have framed.

Gil Kane
Detective Comics #407 – Nice Batgirl title page, somewhat hampered by Colleta inks.

Alex Toth
Rawhide Kid #46: Twice-Up title page to back-up story. Cool layout.

Larry Lieber (15 pages)
Rawhide Kid #90: Cover. My only cover – it is a great one featuring Kid Colt. Reminiscent of Butch and Sundance.
Rawhide Kid #52: 11 pages of twice-up art (nearly the complete story), inked by Carl Hubbell. Lots of great action.
Rawhide Kid #68: Beautiful page inked by our pal Sal.
Rawhide Kid #81: 2 pages of good action inked by John Tartaglione

Dick Dillin (9 pages)
World’s Finest #236: 5 pages of my favourite WF story ever (picked up in 3 separate sales), my ultimate goal is to track down all of the pages to the story guest-starring the Atom.
Justice League of America #129: Great page featuring most of the JLA, the satellite transport tube and the invisible plane. What more can you ask for?
Justice League of America #160: 2 pages featuring with no JLAers, but it’s got Jonah Hex, Enemy Ace and a T-Rex so that’s a trade I’ll make any day.
Atom and Hawkman #44: Nice page from 1969 from atom story featuring a panel of atomic shrinkage (that’s one of my favourite effects in comicdom).

Don Heck (2 pages)
Justice League of America #202: Decent page set on JLA satellite with a particularly nice Hawkman panel.
Ghosts #86: Opening page to story (inked by Dan Adkins) with a good example of why Heck drew the most beautiful women.

Gray Morrow (7pages)
Adventure Comics #406: Decent page of Morrow’s take of Vigilante. Super panel of a mobster, who is being tailed by Vig.
World’s Finest #248: 6 pages of beautiful art on Vigilante story. This stuff (no pun intended) is the nicest art in my collection. I’d pick up more Morrow art in a heartbeat.

Irv Novick (2 pages)
Flash #201: Two very nice pages from a wonderful artist. As an added bonus, they are blessed with Murphy Anderson inks.

Jim Aparo (4 pages)
Batman: LOTDK #145: 4 pages from story featuring Batman, Alfred, the Joker and the Ghuls. Nice stuff but does not look like ‘classic’ Aparo. I’d love to get my hands on a great B & B page, but that stuff is getting more and more expensive ($200+).

Don Newton
Detective Comics #484: This is also one of my nicest pages. Great Batman action page: pure Newton. Boy, I’d love some more of his stuff, but you never see it anywhere.

Harvey Eisenberg
Yogi Bear – March of Comics: Super fun back cover to March of Comics giveaway. Thanks to Scott Shaw! for identifying the art as Mr. Eisenberg whom Scott! considers to be the finest H-B artist.

Win Mortimer (2 pages)
Spidey Super Stories #55: 2 pages that I picked up for next to nothing. Simple and fun art featuring Spidey, the Lizard and Stegron.

Sal Buscema (2 pages)
Tarzan #29: Awesome two-page splash with P. Craig Russel inks.

Ernie Chan (2 pages)
Detective Comics #447: Wonderful action page with Batman battling the Creeper in a lion’s den.
Batman #267: Nice page. Two panels (one of Bats parachuting, the other a close-up of Comm. Gordon) are the stand-outs.

Alex Saviuk
Green Lantern/Green Arrow #104: Classic page of Ollie lecturing and then punching out a crook (does anyone do it better?). I bought this directly from Alex. He is a super nice guy (he sent me a copy of Jack Kirby’s Green Arrow for free when I told him I was a big GA fan). His late 70s and early 80s DC art is really quite nice.

Bill Sienkiewicz
Moon Knight #13: Not a bad page guest starring Daredevil. His stuff is really expensive these days.

Rich Buckler
Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #2: Nice page of Spidey getting fished out of the East river after a battle with Doc Ock. Some nice dialogue between Spidey and New York’s finest.

Ross Andru (3 pages)
Brave and the Bold #89: Cool Silver Age page featuring Batman and the Phantom Stranger.
Batman Annual #12: 2 consecutive pages of Batman and the Slade Monster – good 80s stuff from Andru.

Marie Severin
Spectacular Spider-Man #52: Nice page from Marie featuring both Spidey in action and changing into Peter Parker mode.

Norm Breyfogle
Detective Comics #582: Pretty nice page from one of my favourite Bat-artists guest starring Jim (the Spectre) Corrigan. I pick this one up for $10, one of the weird eBay auctions that people simply missed.

Al Hartley (5 pages)
Kid Colt Outlaw #114: This is a complete back-up story on twice-up paper. One of those great ‘stories with a message’ that Marvel excelled at in the early 60s.

Thanks.

Like I said, I just love this stuff. I guess I must have 50 pages or so.

Actually, I really appreciate you raising the topic as I finally wrote everything. I know that there are other Classic Comics and Oddball regulars who have lots of nice stuff.

Is your Aparo page an Aquaman page? That's the kind of 'classic' Aparo I want to get my hands on.

Here is the Rawhide Kid Cover I consider to be the jewel of my collection.

A few years ago I started collecting with the intention of getting stuff framed. I ended up selling all but two pieces, mostly becuase they just sat in a folder for a couple years, and I needed the money more. What I did keep was this Green Arrow page from Action Comics.

That's a cool one, 13th.

That's my man Dick Dillin. I just love his stuff.

What is the other piece you kept?

I have sold some pieces over the years as well, to get a bit of cash. I kept what I really loved the most, though.

Last year, I donated a couple of pages (a Ernie Colon Brave and Bold page and a Jim Mooney Spider-Man page) for a charity auction at the Toronto Comicon. I think they fetched a good price, and the money was split between a Toronto Food Bank and A.C.T.O.R.

I kept this one, too. Its apparently from a 90's issue of Silver Surfer. I've never seen the book, though. It was cheap, and I love his mace.

That Green Arrow page above just makes me so happy. I sold off about 4 other GA peices that I don't even miss.

Next time I start buying again, I'll be more delibrate about what I spend money on. Stuff I just love to look at so much, you know? Stuff that means something to me. I check out eBay and online sellers to find THE Aquaman or THE Batman I just can't live without. I'd love to have a page from all my favorite artists, someday. So I'll save my money for that and not pick up any random peice that catches my eye because which character is one the page. Its gotta be special in more ways now for me to buy.

-13th

Donating them to an auction was a really cool idea! I hope they found good homes.

Holy crap, you have a Toth. That makes me giddy. I want one of his Lone Ranger pages now. I've only recently discovered him in the past year, but damn, he is amazing.

I know what you mean about the art making you happy.

I started off just being in love with the idea of owning original art - it was such a cool concept . I used to just buy anything that was a good price, but then I had some stuff I didn't really care about all that much and the cost still added up. I sold some stuff so that I could buy what I really.

The only two things I bought in the last year and a half are attached. The first is the Sal Buscema/P. Craig Russel Tarzan two-page spread. I am a big fan of Tarzan and this wasn't very much money at all. I always loved this issue (the final Marvel issue), and when I saw these pages at auction, I just had to have them.I hope to get it framed some day (that's a whole other expense!).

The second one is a Yogi Bear drawing that really makes me smile. It was dirt cheap and I want to have it frame and put it on the wall at work, as this is how my colleagues feel when I try to explain 'the law' to them.

In terms of Toth, I am not sure he did any Lone Ranger. You may be thinking of Zorro? He did some kick ass Zorro work for Dell, and I would give an arm for a page.

My Toth page isn't great, but it's pretty neat as he did next to no work for Marvel as he is 'Al Toth' in the credits. Maybe I'll try to take a digi-pic of it next week and post it.

I've got probably less than 10 pages, but when I go to cons, the originals are what I usually look at. In general, I only buy stuff if it's dirt cheap, and that usually means no identifiable characters on the pages. Oh well. Here's a quick overview of what I've got:

Carmine Infantino - a Supergirl page
Jason Pearson - a Batman page
Dave Johnson - a Chain Gang page
Evan Dorkin - a couple of Bill & Ted pages
Paul Chadwick - a Deadpool page (with Concrete making a cameo on the TV screen)

I've also got an inked Spidey head sketch by Romita Sr. I got years ago.

I'm saving up my nickels and dimes for San Diego this year, I'm hoping to find a Matt Wagner page somewhere (which will completely blow my budget, but oh well).

And yes, please post it if you have a chance. I'd love to see.

That Tarzan spread is spectacular! Totally worth framing. I love the panel with the sun and boats. Very nice!

Yeah my Aparo is an Aquaman. I wanted a Batman but the guy I bought it from sold the Batman earlier... oh well.

I'm like you guys... I LOVE the thought of original art and I beam when people that know what it is see it.

I'd LOVE an original Neal Adams piece... but that's for when I have a better (ir after I graduate and have a real) job!

Here is the Toth page. A little faded, as I could not get good light to take photo, but it should be clear enough.

It may not be super flashy, butI like this one, because it tells a story (which is what Toth does best). It is so intriguing that you are compelled to read on.

I really starting digging Toth's work 5 years ago or so (it was that Complete Toth Zorro Adventures that did it for me). There is a Toth thread on the Classics Comics board with link to a cool site with lots of great Toth art.

You never, ever, ever, ever see Toth art for sale. Some folks must have picked it up years ago and they are not letting go.

I don't know how many jobs Toth did for Marvel, but I doubt more than a handful.

Thanks for the comments on the Tarzan page. I really love it too. I'd love to get a Russ Manning Tarzan page from the 60s, but I never see Gold Key art for sale - I'll bet much of it was destroyed/thrown out.

Heh, "Al Toth" that's great. Thanks for posting it so fast. That page has a ton of black, exactly perfect. I'm jealous.
I first discovered Toth in some Black Hood back ups called The Fox. I paid enough for the issues of comics, can't imagine what those originals would go for.

I have little in the way of original art. I just can't seem to find what I want for the price I want when there are all those comics out there begging to be read. I do have a really nice Joe Staton Huntress page from the Wonder Woman back-up. Very nice full Huntress in action. I also have a Batman commission that my mother got me from Mike DeCarlo. And a couple of strip originals from "Out Our Way" a horribly underrated panel by artist J.R. Williams.

I'm still looking for Newton and Dillin pieces that I feel I can afford. And envying Scott.

Whoa - prices have really gone up in the Orig. Art world.

This thread inspired me to check eBay auctions for some of artists mentioned in this thread:

Alex 'Al' Toth - nothing on Ebay

Dick Dillin - not exactly the most spectacular page and no great shots of Batman, Supes etc... in action. 2 or 3 years ago, this page would have sold for $25.
Dillin (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=972&item=6506936768&rd=1)

Jim Aparo

Here is why none of us can afford his 'classic' stuff. Here is a nice page from 1981 or so - I'll bet it goes for $225+.
Aparo (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=972&item=6506369121&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)

Don Newton

His work is going for a lot more than it used to. This is nice New Gods page from Secret Origins. I'll bet it goes for more than $125.
Newton (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=972&item=6505918197&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)

Neal Adams
Maybe we can all pool our life savings together and buy this Adams cover and set up a time share scenario. Whoa. I wonder what the heck the reserve is.
Adams (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3985&item=6506461610&rd=1)

Slam, I feel your pain. I have been priced out of the market as well. They have increased so much that you can never find a $25 page anymore.

Some of my purchases were multiple page purchases from Heritage Comics, so the 'per page' price is quite low - for example, I think the 6 Gray Morrow pages worked out to $21 a page.

That's the thing. I love the pieces that I've got, and I'd like to have more, especially favorites like Newton and Dillin. But for what it would cost me for one piece of art, I can pick up 6 or 8 tpb's on E-bay or pick up pretty significant runs of books that haven't been collected. With the way prices are going lately, I can pick up 4-5 Archives volumes for $125.

I look periodically for deals, but never seem to find them. Then there's the display issue.

I think I only have 3 pieces of original art.

2 Greg Land pages from Birds of Prey #8 (I think) pages 7 and 9, really nice pages of Dick Grayson and Barbara out on a date.

And Jeff Parker gave me a page from a JLA issue he did for being one of his roadie at the conventions in the 1990's.
