I would love to see a writer utilize her powers fully. I think Claremont was the only one to do it. She's potentially one of the most powerful mutants on Earth.

I cannot wait for the date issue!!! It bothers me that DnA keep seeming like they're going to do more with her and then make her wallpaper again. I hope NM gets a new creative team post-AvX who can balance the cast better.

I love this cover. I wish the artist had done more with powered down Magma. I really like when we get to see Magma and Iceman powered down, even if she's getting her head snapped off. It's so rare.

One of my favorite covers of all time. She looks so gorgeous there. She really does have a great visual, powered up or down.

On my tumblr blog, I'm basically counting down all the Bad Guys that have had a thing for her. I could sort of transpose it over here to try and give my girl Magma an activity boost. I love her so much; it just depresses me to know how underutilized she's been lately. Not only in terms of story, but in terms of POWER, too.

I mean...c'mon. She almost destroyed Rio on her second day as a mutant by burying it in Lava. She's a powerhouse of the NM squad, extremely powerful and volatile. She's LITERALLY kept an alien planet from exploding, by sheer willpower alone. She should have kicked SERIOUS ass this volume.

I'm hoping her inclusion in AvX will convince someone to snatch her up for a new team book as part of Marvel NOW! Since I'm planning on taking a temporary break from buying Marvel to see how this relaunch plays out, Magma being a regular member of a team would be something to change my mind.

There's a nice retrospective being done in the Polaris thread about her significant plot points and developments, so maybe I'll reread Magma's appearances and start something like that in here.

No way. Evil Wallflower totally destroys that Evil Magma one-off. I love both characters immensely, and normally Amara > Laurie, but House of M Laurie is so badass, I can't even...

Besides, that's not even Magma at her evil-ist. Let's see... Not counting her 2 future evil selves that we've been privy to thanks to Illyana's teleporting gone bad, Evil Allison Crestmere/Amara when she was working for King Bedlam was pretty okay. I kind of loved what a selfish self-serving bitch she was, not even going to lie. Will grab scans later.

I looked back at her appearances, courtesy of chronologyproject.com, and she only had 10 on panel appearances as Allison Crestmere. There was the New Warriors issue where the fraudulent nature of Nova Rome was revealed, 5 issues of the Child's Play crossover, and the 4 issues as part of King Bedlam's New Hellions.

Her next appearance after that is the crucifixion scene in Uncanny X-Men #423, which marks the return to her original identity.

The era of the return of Amara and her time walkabout was interesting. With the return of the Amara persona and her departure from Xaviers Institute, Magma took on a very worldly vagabond aura about her that seemed both bohemian and somehow...royal. Her hair grown long and often braided (as if she doesn't have opportunity for visits to salons) and even showing up in the same outfit in different issues (a big wardrobe not a priority). Both seeking her place in the world and reviving old connections to Selene, New Mutants, and her Nova Roman roots visually.
Her costume in X-Treme X-Men, while unfortunate in execution, was an interesting idea. Perhaps a bit more stylishly captured in the New Mutants Forever book, Amara is an Amazon.

I do love it when Amara has Roman influences in her choice of clothing. She should always, always wear gladiator strappy sandals. And apart from the fishnets (lol Claremont and his bondage fetish), I LOVED her NM Forever look. She was fierce. But Thirteen brings up a good point about her bohemian regality. I like to think she's one of the more...worldly NMs, due precisely to her period of 'searching' and exploration.

That'd be a book I'd buy the crap out of. Magma and others, globetrotting about the planet in an effort to 'find themselves' or some such. They're in the age-group to do so now too, as young 20-somethings. It'll be Eurotrip meets Runaways comic, equal parts character-based and normal shenanigans and crazy foreign 'take over the world' schemes they happen to stumble across.

Speaking of...nothing - I like Amara best when she has curly hair. Not that I don't like her with straight hair too, but it helps distinguish between her and the horde of pretty blondes in MU - kind of like the heavy bangs and super straight hair helps distinguish Illyana.

Peronality-wise, most of the characters in "Evolution" were de-aged and less mature than their Claremontian paper antecedents so I give Animated Amara a pass on that. My esteem goes more towards just the break from her standard visual in a way that makes sense given the region from which the character hails.

I always saw her as an upper class woman with heart. She's used to the finer things in life because of her life in the highest socio-economic sphere in Nova Roma, but she feels compassion for other people and a desire to use her powers to help others.

BTW- I wish she were playable in the new Marvel Heroes game. I liked using her in X-Men Alliance on PS2.

When the Church of Humanity crucified Magma, Jubilee, Bedlam, and Skin on the lawn of the Xavier Institute, Magma and Jubes were revived by Warren's magical healing blood (EWW!!) but Skin and Bedlam were too far gone to be revived. Then Magma fell into a coma after being revived and when Elixir woke her up, she freaked out and fled the Xavier Institute, and went to see Sam & Bobby at the Los Angeles X-Corporation office. Upon arriving there, she said her experience with almost dying cleared her head and that Alison Crestmere was a lie and Nova Rome was real.
