View Full Version : Looking for recommendations on comicbooks series?
Hey everyone! Im trying to get some new series into my on-going collections. Besides different Marvel titles, Im currently reading Chew (just finished 2nd paperback volume -International Flavor-), The Goon (waiting for the 3rd volume to arrive home from Amazon), and awaiting for new volumes of Eric Shanowerīs Age of Bronze, Frank Beddorīs Hatter M, Radicalīs Aladdin and the third HC volume of Jason Lutesī Berlin.
I found out some new comics that looked interesting, but Iīd like some opinions aboutīem: The Homeland Directive and Pherone.
Also, love western comicbooks (Bluberry, Loveless, and El Diablo by Brian Azzarello -my favorite western comicbook-) and Im thinking about starting with Sixth Gun, which looks interesting.
Maybe itīs time to get Jeff Smithīs Rasl too, dont know if thereīs gonna be any complete edition like Bones did.
I saw some time ago a comic named Zombies vs. Robots or something like that, and loved the art; but it was expensive. Itīd be nice to have some opinions about it too, in order to know whether it is worth the money.
Well, I welcome all opinions about all the series I mentioned and, any other series I didnt mention. Just want to invest my money right. Thanks alot guys!
P.S. I get all the series in paperback or hardcover format; I live in Spain so I canīt get to the monthly issues.

The Sixth Gun is a great read every month, and I have the first trade and reading it in a big chunk like that was awesome.
Mice Templar is a very good fantasy style story with Mice!
Good choices on The Goon and Chew...I love Chew.
The Goon dropped off for me after around issue #25 I think somewhere around there..but I really enjoyed the early issues.

I'd give RASL a go. I wish I'd jumped on earlier with this as the series is fairly advanced now and I'm not sure if I'd follow it. There's a couple of trades out I think. Dave Sim's Glamourpuss looks intriguing. Other than that I think the DM serial floppy market is decidedly moribund at the moment. A new Optic Nerve has just come out, I'm sure that's worth a look. I bet Brandon Graham's forthcoming Multiple Warheads will be keen. I like James Stokoe's Orc Stain but it seems to have been on hiatus for a while now.
Seriously man if you appreciate good comics like Berlin you should check out these independent distros and order what grabs you:

As far as Western's go, I recommend any and all Jonah Hex comics from DC.
His second solo series just wrapped up, but is collected in serveral trade paperbacks. Most of the stories are single stories per issue. He has a new monthly comic, All-Star Western, that just started.
Jonah Hex also had several Vertigo mini-series in the 90's that are also collected in trade paperback, those are fun too. They are by Joe Lansdale & Timothy Truman. The same creative team did a fun Lone Ranger & Tonto mini for Topps comics around then too, in the same vein.
Other great Western Comics are Blaze of Glory and its sequel Apache Skies from Marvel. A funny Western comic is the Rawhide Kid mini from Marvel as well.
If you want a great take on superheroes there is nothing better IMO then IRREDEEMABLE by Mark Waid from Boom comics. It takes on the premise of, "What if Superman went bad?". It keeps me on the edge of my seat!

Yeah, thatīs why I wondered if there was going to be any complete edition of Rasl. Well, anyway Iīll try to get some volumes.
Iīd seen some Glamourpuss issues before, but they seem kind of art magazine/comicbook mix; and didnīt think it have any plot at all.
I checked Orc Stain an looks interesting to have a further read.
Also Optic Nerve is amazing, as far as Ive seen.

To piggy back on what you said at the end, Incorruptible is a series in the same universe as Irredeemable where the villain decides to be good. I think they might be crossing over right now too.

Zombies vs. Robots is amusing. Stick with the Ashley Wood drawn versions. The series involves time travel, betrayal and a wicked sense of humor (from what I remember).
Wasteland from Oni Press is a mix of post apocalyptic and the old west sensibility. It's definitely worth checking out.

My personal favorite indie superhero series is Dynamo 5.
Awesome. That book doesn't get near enough praise. I am ready for it to be brought back.
Since I quoted the second post I haven't read any other suggestions. I'll give my own though.
Absolutely pick up the sixth gun. It is the best thing to come out of FCBD since Umbrella Academy except that the writers actually take the time to keep the story going.
Umbrella Academy There are only two tpbs but they are still worth reading. Especially the second arc.
You already read Chew which proves you are a smart man
Check out Atomic Robo, and Y the Last Man. Both are fantastic. I my self am interested in getting into Astro City and Gail Simones Welcome to Tranquility is a good read.

Yeah! That was the book I saw: Zombies vs. Robots by Ashley Wood; however it was pretty expensive. I hope to get it sometime soon.
On Wasteland, I got the first paperback volume, but Iīd like to get the hardcover Apocalypse Edition. Itīs a good read.

Yeah, Sixth Gun seems pretty good according to everybody so Im going to get it as soon as I can. Iīll have a look to Umbrella Academy too, thanks.
About Y the Last Man, I already had it in my must read list.
Thanks again to all of you!

I to am a big Mouse Guard fan. If you like MG you should also like MT. The only similarity is that they both contain mice with swords, but both are really good stories on their own.

I agree with all these suggestions. Sixth Gun is fantastic, Umbrella Academy was really good. Atomic Robo is terrific. Y: The Last Man was amazing. Welcome to Tranquility was a big surprise for me...I bought it because I like Gail's writing and it turned out to be much more than I expected.

Chew and the Goon - GREAT PICKS!
My personal all-time fave - PREACHER!
Give it a try. Definitely a western feel to it (among many other things...)

I am extremely tired so I will repost what I just posted in another thread lol
The Transformers will be relaunching in January, G.I. Joe/Cobra/Snake Eyes (all on-goings) you can catch up with since they relaunched a couple months ago, Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just started. I highly reccomend all of these.
Ultimate Marvel just relaunched and I extremely recommend.

Besides the other great suggestions already posted, I would HIGHLY recommend IDW Publishing's LOCKE & KEY mini-series.
It's a dark fantasy surrounding a family who moves into their family's mansion which is full of mysterious keys and a supernatural character who is willing to do anything to find the one key which opens a doorway to another dimension. It's written by novelist Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez and it is one of the best original series to come out in a loooong time.

It's great, but you're gonna have to be patient, as it's shipping threatens to put Planetary's to shame.

Iīd seen some Glamourpuss issues before, but they seem kind of art magazine/comicbook mix; and didnīt think it have any plot at all.
There are two 'plots' in glamourpuss: the first is a history of newspaper comic strips, looking at the work of creators such as Alex Raymond, Stan Drake, Wally Wood and Milton Caniff and the internal rivalries and competitiveness that drove each man; the second 'plot', which springs out of the first, is an examination of the events of September 6th, 1956, the significance of which I leave you to discover for yourself. The fashion satire that comprises half of each issue is more take it or leave it for my money but the art history half is more than worth the price of admission imo.
(I should mention that due to a screw-up on the part of my LCS I've not yet seen the last four issues of glamourpuss so for all I know the 09/06/1956 storyline might have been resolved by now.)
Ok guys, itīs been a while since I posted; but Iīll tell what choices I got and what Im looking now for:
-I started up with Sixth Gun. Just great, canīt praise it enough, though I reckon it was a bit weird at first.
-Of course, Ive kept buying the other indie series I was following (Chew, Goon, Mouse Guard, etc.).
Now, Im looking to get into Cowboy Ninja Viking and Last Days of America Crime, as well as graphic novels as Noche Roja and Homeland Directive. Any comments on those? Any similar series I may like?
Thanks again for all your recommendations guys. Ive tried some other of the above, as Locke and Key, but I dropped it after a few issues; tried again the Preacher (Ive been told so many times to it) but I just donīt like, not my kind. On the other hand, I got pending RASL, Incorruptible and Irreedemable; which I look forward to.
