If your talking about just who's my favorite i.e just one then its without question Wolverine, who is the heart and soul of the team.
But here's my top ten all time favorite X-Men.
Wolverine
Archangle
Bishop
Nighcrawler
Kitty Pryde
Cannonball
Rogue
Magneto
Sabertooth
Mystique
ya the last two aren't really true X-Men,but they were apart of the teams like during the begging of Carey's run on X-Men.Forced or not they still count.

Henry McCoy, Ph.D., Commander Abigail Brand, Drunk/Angry Lockheed, Emma Frost, Scott Summers, Ororo Munroe, Hisako Ichiki, Jean Grey, and Logan (in a team).
There was a solid team dynamic and character interaction during Morrison's New X-Men and Whedon's and Ellis' respective runs of Astonishing X-Men.
Pete Wisdom and Beak also included.

#1 Cable
Depending on the writer:
Domino Not when she is sleeping with Wolverine, that didn't happen anyway
Psylocke
Deadpool Only Kelly and Nicieza, Remender a little
Magik
Emma sometimes. Specially when talking to Ms Marvel
X-23 (Kyle/Yost)
Storm. Obviously not Stormbot.

Before I give my list, I'll must say that my X-men history really began with Supernovas but also includes Morrison's New X-Men, House of M, Decimation, and most of Kyle and Yost's New X-Men (I read everything before Choosing sides, and everything after Childhood's End).
X-23
Rockslide & Anole (They need to be with in 200 feet of each other to be awesome)
Nightmare (She's superior to the Fractionized Pixie and is a worthy successor to Kyle and Yost's Pixie)
Cable
Cannonball
Teliporter
Hope
Zero
Hellion
Worthy mentions includes: Wolverine, Gambit, Omega Sentinel, Deadpool (Remainder's), Nightcrawler
As strange as it sounds, Hellion reducing Omega Sentinel to a skull was one of the most OMFG! moments in any X-Men comic I read.

Wolverine and Storm are my two favorite male and female members. They are the heart and soul of the team to me, because they epitomize the highest and lowest a man and woman can be, physically, mentally and spiritually. Honorable samurai, protector of the weak. Savage barbarian, killing all in his path. Benevolent goddess, bringer of light and life. Ruthless thief, afraid of being crushed by the weight of the world. That's all I need from the X-Men, but its easy to mess up their balance and skew too far in one direction for too long.
Beyond them, favorites, based on personalities and whole package(look and powers) would be Gambit, Monet, Rogue(classic Rogue, can't stand post-Xtreme), Colossus and Nightcrawler.
For the most part, the books have not done well with my favorites lately, only occasional glimpses of their true awesomeness is shown in the books, if at all(RIP Nightcrawler! Hope was not worth it! I want a refund!)
Dust, Magma, Iceman, Sunspot, Dani and Northstar all have great potential, but its hardly been realized, now or before, so they're still just potential favorites.

1. Cyclops
2. Wolverine (when he's not crying over his dead bastards)
3. Magneto (when he's not kissing Scott's ass)
4. Emma Frost wen she's being bitchy
5. Nightcrawler (when he's not pushing up daisies)
6. Psylocke during the whole Revanche thing (now I'm not too interested in her)

X-23 is my absolute overall favorite X-man that I put above everyone else but aside from her I'd go with Kitty,Gambit, Iceman,Jean,Wolverine, and Omega Sentinal.
Honarable mentions go to: Rogue,Dazzler,Psylocke, and Nightcrawler

Hmmm.
1. Emma: Cause even though people in story and the fanbase hate her, she continues to be an X-Men without apology, I think that's admarible in so many ways. I loved the character since Gen X, and even with the falls of recent years, she'll always be first.
2. Rictor: He became so awesome after he lost his powers, I just felt him to be totally relatable. I'm not as familiar with his earlier appearances prior to the current X-Factor, but he's def my fave there.
3. Iceman: I love Bobby Drake. He's just lovable, his powers are awesome. Wish the writers felt the same. He has so many good relationships with the X-Men that are just filled with potential storyline.
4.Jean: I always loved her powers since the cartoon, and but she wasn't always my favorite till Morrison got her. She was so strong and unapologetic here. killing her was a mistake.
5. Pixie: She wasn't even on my top ten, till Gen Hope 11. Her speech was well done and made Logan and Scott's point without the added stupidity. She always had potential for good character work.
the other 5, I won't go into details.
6. Northstar.
7. X-23.
8. Beast (He used to be higher till he lefted)
9. Rogue.
10. Shatterstar.

Gambit.
Unless he is in a comic I won't read it. I am just devoted to his character. I could write a whole essay why I love his chacater but I'll spare you all and just say ' i r think he is teh coolest!1!1!'
- Also who I like
--- Dust - simply cause we Middle Eastern people don't get enough. (My mother is Iraqi and my dad is from Kuwait). I have not read too much of her stuff but what I have read I enjoyed.
--- Jublilee. She was the reason I got into the X-Men series I think. Though from her grew my love for Gambit. ..and got to say I do like Vampire Jubilee though I was hesitant to accept her at first.
**I use to love Rogue but in the last few years she drove me nuts now I can't stand her. D:

Rogue & Wolverine are some of my favorites when written by competent writers.

y'know i really don't have a favorite character because i've been reading the x-men for so long that i've pretty much embraced them all...
sure i like some more than others, but each character through the years/decades have brought something to the table to create the mythos that surround the books...you can't help but to be pulled into the stories surroundig these characters -- xavier trying to mold teenagers who have no clue as to what it's like to be a mutant let alone a teenager and those teenagers growing into leaders themselves but still trying to find their place in the world...
some characters have grown, some have stagnated, some have died (only to be brought back)...i like the O5, ororo munroe, danielle moonstar, kitty pryde, and emma frost because their character dynamics i identify most with as a reader...these are characters -- to me -- are the foundation of all things x...
however, dear and faithful fans, i like the others too...

Jubilee- despite having the ability to blow up/cause people to have strokes/etc... she opted to stay true to her belief that it was wrong to kill a fellow human/mutant being. She also, despite having witnessed so many deaths and horrifying experiences, remains generally positive and happy even now as a vampire.
My top favorites are:
Jubilee
Kitty Pryde
Colossus
Husk
Wolverine
X-23

I really like this post xgeek. And I agree. The X-Men are best when they're all together, working as a team. And thats really how I like reading them. Again, we all have some we like a bit more than others (for me: Iceman, Shadowcat, Rogue, Chamber, Dani, and a few more) but they've all contributed something to the franchise, and should all be recognized as important.

Here are some of mine....
Magik - She is likely the one dearest to my heart. I know she's controversial, but I can't think of a single comic book character at Marvel who is anything like her. She is equal parts byronic hero, anti-hero, and not-really-a-hero rolled into one. Whether she is babysitting Lockeed for Kitty (I miss their friendship) or shaking up reality for her own secretive means, she always fascinates. Her origin story is also one of the strongest. She would read well in a Vertigo-like solo series.
Storm - While her recent role as a wife hasn't pulled me in, her past glory will always resonate. Her time as the mohawk-sporting leader of the X-Men will indefinitely outshine any other leader to me. Hopefully better times await for 'Ro. Her time in the 80s will always make her a favorite of mine.
Quentin Quire - Quentin is a favorite. I love how he embodies honesty and bullshit at once. Despite only appearing in a handful of issues, he completely made an impact with me. I am excited to read more of him!
Dani Moonstar - I've always loved Moonstar. She had some great scenes these past two years. I hope writers continue to tap into her potential.
* I want another motorbike ride with the female Ghost Rider!
Warlock - When done right, Warlock has one of the best visuals. His personality, when done right, is very unique yet warm. I love Warlock!
Dazzler - Another who deserves more than she gets. Her solo series was quite different for its time. She has tons of potential. I'm glad Gillen is a fan.
Anole - As written by Kyle and Yost, the character is simply great. He and Rockslide have a great dynamic. Lots of potential!
Meggan - I've loved Meggan since her early Excalibur days. Her powers, when politically correct, are quite fascinating. Paul Cornell did some interesting things with her. I would love to read more about her in the near future.
Cable - The character became interesting to me when he started thinking big picture. Providence, saving the mutant messiah...all that! Love you, Cable!
Ariel - I fell in love with her during Fallen Angels. When she reappeared, I was giddy. I knew Mike Carey had plans to bring her back. One can hope!
Ernst - Yes.
Pete Wisdom - Yeeeaaahh.
The rest of the New Mutants - Despite their clique mentality.
Sage - Because it all started here.
Honorable mentions to Chamber, British Psylocke, Rictor, Shatterstar, X-23 under Marjorie Liu, the quasi-mutants Cloak and Dagger, the now confirmed mutants Wiccan and Speed, and Qwerty!
A very special mention to The Goblin Force!

My favorite X-Men are Emma, Professor X, and Sage.
I like Prof. X because telepathy is super cool and because I like his dream and idealism and goodness. He makes many mistakes, and gets stupid evil retcons, but in his core he's undeniably a good, dreamer guy!! He knows he can't win without sinking some, but he still tries to do right and loves his students and the Dark Side of Xavier is hilarious. Onslaught was funny, too. I think he's a great teacher and father figure, and was only creepy once. I love when he has good relationships with his students. I also like his love interests. His family is sort of crummy, though.
I like Sage because she's a mystery. I like all of her costumes, I like her tattoos, and I love her hair styles. I even like Diana Fox, because she has a killer mask. I also like that she know most everything, drinks liberally, and is a bit selfish. I think her history is interesting and I'd love to see it explored more. I also enjoy her attitude. She's awfully cold, and that's fun when she's insulting, but she can be very sweet. I love when she insisted she was the only one who could save Storm, even after Storm almost let her die and Sage absolutely has the wrong power set to rescuing someone from a flood and I loved her picture with Xavier in that Unlimited issue that might be non-canonical. She's got cool fighting moves, too. Sage can be a bit ridiculous, but that's part of her charm. X-Treme X-Men wouldn't have been funny and amazing and occasionally (I thought so) really well done without her! I also liked that she didn't pitch a bitch like Danger. STFU robot.
I mostly like Emma's design.
I like a lot of them X-Men, but at this second these are my favs! I also love Callisto.

I have tons of favorites, but here's the current top 5-
5. Gambit- I blame X-Men TAS... The accent got me at an early age.
4. Wolverine- A deep guy that tries to hide his good/kind nature with a thick layer of tough badassery. Gotta love it.
3. Storm ('70s/'80s)- A strong woman/leader and one of the first female comic characters that I looked up to as a kid.
2. Beast- Brains are sexy.
1. Nightcrawler (Excalibur)- A charming and funny Errol Flynn-type character with awesome mutant powers? Heck yes!!! <3

Nightcrawler - many thing - he likes fiction about pirates (just like me), multiple swords and acrobatic ( I'm sucker for multiple swords and acrobatic), philosophical (just like me), he likes all kind of old stuff (just like me), religious and Catholic (just like me). I guess I like him so much because I can relate to him, but most important I like him because of his smile and the laugher he brings to others... (cute German accent and blue fur helps also)
I also like very much Nocturne, Gambit, Shadowcat, Storm, Wolverine and Lockheed.

Gambit by a country mile. I will only occassionally pick up a comic that he is not in.
Storm back when she was badass. I don't read her much now because they have just butchered the character.
Cyke speaking of butchering, I used to like him pre HoM but since then I don't even recognize the Scott Summers I grew up with.
Bishop before they destroyed him to prop up Hope. How they turned one of the most competent X-men into a guy who can't even kill a baby is downright literary murder.
X-23 and Jubillee I ended up liking both these characters only because of their connection to Gambit (X-23 from her book and Jubes from TAS).
Looking at that list it is kind of sad that most of my favorites characters have been ruined by Marvel.

Gambit: It was the trench coat and staff.
Storm: I like her when she acts a little aloof and surreal.
Nightcrawler: He's practically a Catholic saint, but his best friend is a killer, his real mom is a terrorist, loved and raised by a witch, and the ruler of a hell dimension keeps a small plush toy version of him. The man doesn't judge.
Psylocke: The reason why I'm into the x-men in the first place.
Rogue: She's got spirit, or used to.
Kitty: I love her interactions with illyana, storm, nightcrawler, and everybody else.

10-01-2011, 06:00 AM
My favorite X-character is Psylocke with Wolverine followed closely behind. They are just the epitome of greatness to me. Their stories have always been some of the most interesting to me and that no matter what they go through they can always bounce back. Brainwashing, body swapping, killing sprees, psycho kids, crazed AU rapist brothers and NINJA!! they always come out on top. They have a lot of scars of their souls but they're good people(for the most part) at the end of the day. They're way smarter than given credit for and they are totally badass.
They're also both kind of slutty but they embrace their sexuality and I dig that.
After those two it would be Storm, Nightcrawler, Dazzler, Jesse Bedlam. Moonstar and Havok. If I could get a team with all of them I would die. While I have others that I strongly enjoy those are my tops.

Gambit - Acts bad but has a good person inside constantly trying to get out.

Sage - Was a secret agent. That's just cool.
... I guess I like characters that are studies in internal conflict and contradiction.

Jean Grey is my favorite X-Man. I always liked the juxtaposition of a normal everyday girl having to balance being one of the most powerful mutants ever. She's very identifiable as a hero because she is so real. And I love that no matter how powerful she gets she never truly loses her humanity. I miss her but I enjoy the role her memory has taken within the X-Men since her 'death'
Psylocke is a close second. Her history is somewhat of a mess but I've always enjoyed that she is an outsider among outsiders. Following those two are Storm, Sunfire, and now Transonic.

Cyclops -
He manages to still be really cool at times despite all the awful stories he's been in. Unfortunately, I don't care for many of the comics from the last few years.
Cable -
Another character that you'll sometimes see listed as the worst, but you have to wonder if any of those people have ever opened an issue of a Cable comic. Ties with Frank Castle and Namor as the most badass comic character, imo.
Warren Worthington III -
For over 20 years, this guy's only power was flight, and his only ability was having a nice amount of money.
Illyana -
Just the weirdest character, and somehow still extremely likable. When I got into the X-Men, I started from the beginning of Claremont's run and watched this character pretty much go from being a toddler to the strangest X-Man.
Wolverine -
Wolverine and the X-Men. I mean they don't even try to hide it anymore.

Emma Frost- Because she hasn't allowed her insecurities and demons get in the way of going after what she wants or getting in the way of her ambition. I consider her to be both a role model and an alter ego .

Meh. Just check the sig. They're pretty much in order, arranged by sex.
Shadowcat: She's pretty much what I think is the total package. Flawless... due to her flaws.
Magik: Scary in all the right ways.
Darkstar: Her powers and she's Russian.
Storm: The Claremazon of Claremazons.
Dust: Her solemnity.
Mercury: Her attitude, pretty much.
Monet: She'd be a Claremazon if Claremont had anything to do with her. Beauty, attitude, powerful. What's not to like?
Rachel: I've always thought she was the better Phoenix.
Cipher: Don't know, but I like the bitchy attitude.
Magneto: Because he's right.
Nightcrawler: Well, I loved him when he was actually fun. Don't think there's a bigger heart amongst the X-Men.
Colossus: He's Russian, caring, but honestly my fondness for him has been waning. His martyr syndrome is becoming a bit overblown.
Rockslide: Because he's a fun tool.
Beast: Only one of the O5 I can stand. I preferred him as an Avenger. When he's fun instead of mopey, he's delightful.

Magik's my favourite character in all of Marvel and in my top 5 in all of comicdom (behind several bat-characters). I have never before or since seen an origin story as good or shocking as the four issue Magik limited series. Fascinating powers, the biggest chip possible on her shoulders, outcast from her own group, a rouges gallery all her own, and tragedy surrounding every action, she had it all. And the whole question of whether her own actions mattered in determining what she was remains fascinating, though it's an aspect that's been lacking of late.
Wolverine doesn't need an explanation.
Kitty Pryde was the best 'normal' person to look on and join the X-Men. They've attempted to recreate her many times but each try is only a reminder of how could the original was. She's the Tim Drake of the X-Men, the normal kid taken in by the best, trained by the best, and through sheer determination becoming one of the best despite having a power that's of almost no offensive use.
Magneto during his original turn to being a good guy was also one of my absolute favourites. Seeing such a powerful personality attempting to reign his ego in and do more than atone for what were truly atrocities he had commited was great. I still wish they had kept him like that rather than turn him back into a cartoon villain.

Jean Grey is my favorite character. I like her compassionate nature and fear of losing control.
My other favorites include Cyclops, Kitty Pryde, Polaris, and Iceman. I like Scott's loyalty to the dream and ability to get the job done, Kitty's snark and brains, Lorna's insecurities and her ability to overcome them, and Bobby's immaturity and power.

Mimic: He was the original "bad boy" of the X-Men looong before Wolverine hit the scene.
The guy is a complete mess.
He means well, but often ends up on the wrong side of a fight.
Plus, I love the recent revelation he's bipolar.

So I was bored and decided to tally up the top 10 favorite X-Men that everyone mentioned on this thread so far (though there ended up being more than 10 X-Men because several were tied ).
1. Storm (27 mentions)
2. Wolverine (25 mentions)
3. Rogue (23 mentions)
4. Gambit, Shadowcat, & Nighcrawler (all had 19 mentions)
5. Psylocke & Emma (both had 16 mentions)
6. Jean Grey (14 mentions)
7. X-23 & Cyclops (both had 11 mentions)
8. Dani Moonstar (10 mentions)
9. Iceman & Colossus (both had 9 mentions)
10. Beast & Magneto (both had 8 mentions)
No big surprises (although I was hoping Nightcrawler would be in the top 3 ).

Gambit has been without a doubt my favorite X men since I was a kid. With my first exposure to the X men being the animated series. He just came off more likable then the stiff Cyclops and Wolverine who came off as the standard I'm badass of the team vibe. Then with getting into comics later his character and power set just seemed cool so I've stuck with him.
Prodigy, when I really got back into reading X men I picked up New X men and Prodigy was my favorite out of the group... perhaps with a lil bias cause I'm black also but whatever. I found it disappointing when he got depowered but regaining his what he had learn was cool and I was hoping we'd see more of him after that..which hasn't been the case until recently...
Cannonball has gone back and forth for me, depending who writes him he's pretty cool but at other times really bland.
I liked Surge at first, lightning powers plus her codename = variant spelling of my name was spiffy but lately her character has fallen off with me.

Hasn't everyones?

My only real fave X-men is Gambit, partly because i grew up reading the comics as soon as he debuted. I liked the whole mysterious "we don't know if we can trust him" thing. Plus i just enjoy his character and his aloofness as he was a good counterbalance to the more serious X-Men. The whole trying to redeem himself thing was something i enjoyed too, which reminds me of a quote by Xavier "how often must the scoundrel prove himself a hero, before he believes it himself".

Gambit -What can I say I was born in the 90s, he could do with a costume redesign and a purpose but I will always be a fan. He still has plenty of room to grow with his powerset and his character and I am hoping the writer after cary will do something with him. If not, he is just fun and a joy to read if done right.
Emma - Used to not be able to stand her but as I saw her character evolve I was amazed. She has to have made the most character progress out of any of the X-men or close to the most. Also the change was permanent (or seems so) which is almost absurd in comics.
Nightcrawler - was amazing just because of what he represented. A religious character who wasn't overly so. With all the agnostic characters in comics it is nice to see some difference. Also he is just really cool from his design to his attitude.
Storm - I am thinking of dropping her. She was amazing early on but now she just stagnated. Ill give her a bit after regenesis to move around and actually make a spot in the X-men. If not then maybe they should give her one amazing arc and kill her (or maybe an actual retirement form the X-men and come back as a guest now and then) off until someone can make her grow cause right now all she seems to be doing is regressing from such a high point and, as a fan, it hurts to watch.
X-23 - I used to haaaaaate her. I am not a fan of wolverine and I will admit it. His over exposure in a ton of comics makes his continuity a mess. Also due to so many different writers writing him at the same time he does not grow as much as he should and sometimes contradicts himself. That brings me to X-23 a clone of wolverine and a backlash to his overexposure, created with the concept of what if we had a female wolverine. Her character progressed like that as well. A horrible past - turning her into a weapon and her escaping - having a brutal life after escaping until she joins the x-men... it was very uninspired. Plus Marvel used to like to promote her to no end. Then I read Marjorie Liu's X-23 due to a few recommendations and she seems to give the character a voice, a purpose, and makes her more human without being REALLY uncomfortable. Although I am not a huge fan of the tortured past that has been used to no end she seems to humanize X-23 more then just a monotone character (she was pretty one note in X-force). Now I have to say I am a fan.

Psylocke: I like the concept of a brit lady that got stuck in a body of a ninja warrior, feeling perfectly comfortable in it... plus the butterfly power signature, martial arts skills and purple hair make her character very unique among the x-men.
Nightcrawler cool power and visually amazing
Wolverine not the savage Wolverine, but I like him as the x-force commander and everyone's pal, even being a shattered loner with his thorn soul...
Jean Morisson did great... As someone said, it feels like jean is a normal girl, someone who still sticks with her real life, even with all the power she has and all the crazy things that happened to her.
I used to love Emma in Astonishing, but I definitely hat the direction Fraction gave her, she is so damn repetitive and obvious nowadays...
Gambit used to be my second fav during the 90's. he lost his mojo now.
Rogue used to be cool with super strength and flight powers, but her story became ubber dramatic from the mid 90's on...

If being a badass is your only criteria then your lists should have doezens of characters.
It annoys me a little me when I see a blanket or general reason for liking a character and think "but what about this character, and this character, and this character, and this character, and this character.......................who fit the bill just as much if not more?"

Clarification for sunofdarkchild
Cannonball - his southern charm and assertiveness portrayed by Carey , followed by his big-brother mentality per Wells, are all admirable traits
Cipher - I love her visual with the dreads. She's Kitty Pryde to the Nth degree and I'm a sucker for the passive yet dangerous powersets.
Colossus - love the opposing ideals of gentle soul with crushing strength, and his familial ties are, of course, a big deal for me.
Cyclops became a man. His own man. He and Emma are my favorite couple. He's stern, confident, and gets sh#t done. Great leader.
Dani - always been a fan but more so when she lost her powers. She's become an even stronger presence and she embodies stubborn self reliance and independence. And she'll punch you in the face quicker than say Hello. ha.
Emma - Bad girl with so much to prove but won't admit to needing approval. Self reliant, silver tongued, blonde bombshell who you want on your side for fear of the alternative.
Magik - the ultimate redemptive anti-hero character. Constantly enduring internal struggle and overcoming insurmountable odds. Tragic origins with heroic ambition.

Not what I was talking about. I did not give a reason for Wolverine myself other than to say it's self-explanatory.
When people say "These are my favorite characters because they're badasses." here it implies that no one is isn't on their list is a badass.
It's probably that that bothers me, because the trust issues given for Gambit that apply to a heck of a lot of X-Men didn't bother me at all. I have a tendency that is sometimes unfortunate to take things to their logical conclusions. Hence, if you like badasses, and these characters are the ones you like for the sole reason that they are badasses, no characters you could have mentioned but didn't are badasses.

Bishop- he was in the first X-man comic i ever read. And it was great finally seeing a black male X-Man. Plus he represented what Xavier's Dream could look like if humans and mutants started making bad choices.
Storm- she's fierce and mothering at the same time. Has an aswesome power set and looks like Iman if she was a superhero.
Psylocke- Femininity and fierceness in one lethal package.
Wolverine- Best there is at what he does.
Gambit- He was my favorite from the 90's cartoon series and i always liked his roguish (no pun intended) charm. Women want him, men want to be him.
Rogue- of course this was before they turned her in Anna Paquin. She was a spitfire and i liked the idea of the sassy southern girl who could punch you into orbit. Plus i thought it was interesting she was this hot woman who you could never touch.
Nightcrawler- Always loved his design. One of the best in comics.
Jubilee- She was my Kitty Pryde when i was reading X-Men.
Iceman- I've always liked the wisecracking characters and Bobby could be a real powerhouse if someone could just give him some TLC.
Now if the thread said favorite mutants this list would be longer. ;)

I like male characters that get treated like Claremazons, in their own way. Men who break, are emotionally intelligent, sensitive, intelligent without the intellectual conceit, industrious studmuffins who care little for material possessions, DTF, and are generally evenly keeled if not chipper about the whole ordeal. Malemazons. These do not exist anywhere but the X-MEN.
I enjoy X-Women that are beautiful and bizarre in a way. As though one factor depends on the other and if that makes them the more interesting.
Attitude helps but I still enjoy seeing a little vulnerability from time to time.
Generally I like Scemma, but only when they are being represented as the MU's version of McQueen and Dunaway that I am sure was the model for the relationship.
BLACKWINGS

Excluding villains . . . . . and not in order . . . . .
Maggott – Unique design, unusual powers, and interesting back story. A truly special mutant that was never given the due time or effort by fans, or writers.
Nightcrawler – Just a really fun character that exemplified love and loyalty to friends, and to God.
Warlock – I loved the Extinction Agenda and Phalanx Covenant arcs, so maybe it was only natural that I would love a character that had originated with the Phalanx. A really fun and innocent character that exemplifies a love and loyalty to friends, and something about his naïve personality is truly endearing.
Iceman – He exemplifies unbridled fun and infectious laughs, yet we know that behind that smile there is untapped potential and underestimated experience.
Angel - I love the dual personality and inner conflicts between the two natures.
Colossus – I love the contradiction of power and personality. A loving and gentle personality, contradicted with cold steel and raw power.
Jean Grey – I hate the Phoenix, but I love the girl. She was the heart of the team, and the cornerstone of Xavier’s dream. Again, she had an innocence and morality to her that made her all the more endearing when the X-Men were faced with moral dilemmas and tough decisions.
Havok – I never cared for Havok until Howard Mackie took over X-Factor and truly introduced a new and interesting team, and Jeff Matsuda made every member look flippin’ awesome. After that, Havok has been one of my favorites ever since – especially after he took over the X-Men’s leadership a few years ago under Austen and Milligan.
Nate Grey – A young experimental masterpiece who was created and nurtured by Sinister. Who was made from the spliced genes of Scott and Jean, to act as a fail-safe weapon against the dictator Apocalypse? A young mutant that is raised in a basement laboratory by the most evil mutant on earth, to one day over power the strongest mutant on earth – but suddenly escapes to the outside world and has no experience or maturity to handle powers that could split the planet in half? Okay, I'm sold.
Cable/Bishop - Say it is 90's nostalgia, but I couldn't care less. I really like the "time traveling soldier/cop trying to prevent a mutant extinction future from happening, using guns and mutant powers" thing.
Characters that have awesome visuals, both with powers and design, tend to grab my attention before all others. Then their back story and personality are what seals the deal.

this is a good reason, how do you feel about greg land's lack of drawing the bangs
I don't like it, but I still love the character.

Dazzler is by hands down my favorite, and has been since I first read her as a kid. I loved her powers and the whole all she wanted to do was sing thing. It was the connection and got me to buy the book monthly instead of sporadically like I had previously.
Other favorites are

Polaris
Moonstar
Jean
Banshee-Sean
Cannonball
Havok
I like most of the rest. I only dislike a few. hah.

I'll do a top five.
My favourite X-man is Cyclops I love that he has the boy scout/good soldier thing going on but unlike Superman, Captain America or Optimus he is fallible but attempts to be a strong leader in spite of his failings. I didn't like during Fractions run how Scott was treated as perfect it is detrimental to his character but am loving Aaron making him take up a tough choice no matter how unpopular the view may be. I am also a big fan of how he tries to suppress his emotions in a similar manner to how he tries to suppress his powers but in both cases they are ready to burst underneath. I also think that he has a cool power and striking aesthetic
Jamie Madrox is a very close second for similar reasons but with a lot more surface personality. I loved the goofy Madrox of my childhood but this noir inspired detective with a somewhat faulty power but still able to crack a joke now and then speaks perfectly to my current taste.
I have always had a soft spot for Rogue and it goes back to the animated series but I have never been the biggest fan of her more gothy/emo incarnations in recent media. She is a strong woman who is dealing with an excessive amount of personal tragedy and what amounts to a crippling disability.
Jean Grey if for no other reason than being the focal point of some of the greatest stories in the medium. I do like her personality and her relationships to other character she always made a great foil for Scott.
I always liked Warren never mattered to me if he was Angel or Archangel. The rich boy with daddy issues is usually not a trope I am particularly fond of but add in a degree of racism along with the constant battle of light and dark found in his relationship with Apocalypse and you have a pretty interesting character in my opinion.
I guess rounding off my top ten would be something like Theresa Cassidy, Nightcrawler, Emma Frost, Layla Miller and Beast. I know that my favourites may be a little boring but I personally find them very compelling.

It's hard to pin down a favourite X-Man or even a short list of X-Men, but I'll give it a shot.
Cyclops
Emma Frost
Wolverine
Colossus
Rogue
Psylocke
That would make an interesting team, especially if it was the 'old' Cyclops and not the dictator they've turned him into.

When's the last time Cyclops helped Xavier cross a street?
Astonishing X-Men 39. He subsequently died getting hit by a bike. Hence why we haven't seen him in the x-books again. it hasn't caught up with legacy's timeline yet.

Hahaha!
That is why I followed up with the soldier and fallible thing I have always found that boy scout description of characters a little lacking but you reinforced my point to a degree in that he is kind of lacking in the boy scout department.

Zeitgeist - he was racist, sexist, homicidal, and his power was puking corrosive acid on people. In short:
THE BEST X TEAM LEADER EVER.
I also noticed Cyclops has been since following above blueprint, which only confirms that Z-dot was ahead of the curve.
Iceman - because he's cool and he porks chicks all day. Chicks. All. Day. Honestly though he has always been the character that's provided the best visual in the X books (besides Psylocke and her thongkini) and the whole 'earnest goof growing into his own' thing goes a long way for me.
Jamie Madrox - For multiple reasons: I love the whole noir inspired genre so it's amusing there's a character that longs for those conventions, he's been such a fun character to read under PAD and I appreciate his status as a flawed yet grounded keystone for X-Factor, and I can't think of another character whose power is at the same time can provide an interesting insight into his own inner workings (except maybe Legion off the top of my head). Like it's been said in the book or by the PTB somewhere, he's got the ability to do everything at once and yet still is often unsure about which direction to take. I can relate to that.
Xorneto - so silly but so fun. Just a great xanatos gambit (look it up on Tvtropes).
Mimic - I actually can't pinpoint what it is exactly that I like about him as a character, but I like that he's got that real weight of history behind him but still somehow feels like a half painted canvas of sorts. He's got a great ability but despite that hasn't been able to define himself (which is a fun irony considering his power), and it was nice to see him want to prove himself as a hero and enjoy that spotlight briefly during the Dark X-Men storyline, even if he was on the wrong team.
Transonic - I have a thing for Canadian girls, and if she pistol whips Hope she'll go straight to the top of my list.

I'm actually surprised to see someone else who knows the term. I still love how in every episode where he loses Xanatos is happy because he says he accomplished this goal or that goal or those goals. I got the sense that he'd be miserable if he won completely.

Always liked the O5 the best ... one of the few lineups where one character doesn't overshadow the others. Plus, their powers work pretty well together and it has the nostalgia and adolescent growing-up factors going for it.
Wolverine is a really cool character at his core and probably the most well-rounded, but Marvel has really diluted his character the past ten or so years.
I'd go:
05 (Cyke, Jean, Beast, Angel, Bobby in that order)
Rogue
Wolverine
Nightcrawler
Gambit
Cable
Least favorites:
Emma (just because she's bitchy doesn't make her deep)
Colossus (always bored me)
Professor X (lame)
Wolverine (if ever written by Daniel Way)

That's exactly how I feel about Northstar
What? You mean you consider him to be an alter ego? I frankly don’t see how you can consider him to be a role model when he back stabbed the X-Men and sulks and pouts when he doesn’t get his way. Not exactly my idea of getting over yourself.
