That's funny you say that I HATED Ultimate X-Men, only liked it when Kirkman came on and Coliete's was short but great. Ultimatum got rid of a lot of shitty characters for me and Ultimate X is up there with Ultimate Spider-Man for me on best Ultimate book ever made.

Personally I loved Ultimate X-Men aside from the later run of it and have been interested in just how the surviving X-Men and Johnny pick up the pieces after Ultimatum basically raped the cast.

Can we please not use the word "rape"?How else would you describe the indecency that befell the X-Men's cast from Ultimatum? It's the metaphorical sense, not the physical. It even fits one definition:
violent destructive treatment: the violent, destructive, or abusive treatment of something.

And whose one definition is that? Yours? It's certainly not the same definition I think you'll find most people have. The cast of the UU did not get raped, no matter what your opinion of Ultimatum.

You know wyokid, I find it interesting........I understand his metaphor and while a little crude it describes how he feels...I find it interesting that this bothers you and your asking him to tone it down but you and some others on the forum talk about all the cast hooking up in some homosexual fantasies like it's some kind of porn shop......either we are going to show some kind of class or not but we can't have it both ways!

You know I kind of felt the same way when I first heard that this was coming out. I was like "What's the point? All the X-Men I care about are dead. How is this even going to work?" But that's also kind of the hook too. How is it going to work out? How are these mutants going to survive? After reading the X-Men preview in Ultimates #1, I found it very intriguing and has me wanting to know what happens next. While I would prefer to see more familiar characters like Cyclops and Wolverine fight through this tough time, I think it would be wrong to dismiss without even giving it a chance.

This was the only book that I wasn't going to get from the relaunch but I find myself becoming more intrigued. I pray to God, Alha and Buddha that Jimmy turns out OK (let's not get into that) because Spencer's UXM is looking sweet. I think I'll trade wait though.
Well I'm sure my mother would disagree with you, I asked politely.

Try the dictionary or even a basic Bing search of the definition. Believe it or not, the most mainstream use of a word isn't the only way it's defined.
I doubt she's had the time to get it styled.
Here's hoping. Considering how different she's been from her 616 counterpart, I don't want her turning into 616 Storm. I actually like how she is in the UU.

Anyway, I'm wondering how this whole Ultimate X-Men thing is going to play out. It sounds like we are not going to get a traditional team book, which is cool. Like I've said before, I'm a little worried about the tone of this book though. It seems like it's going to be the tale of how terrible mutants lives are, which could be fantastic, or could be depressing.
I'm hoping Spencer manages to avoid the temptation to kill characters off right away, but we'll see. I'm also excited to see if we'll get to see Colossus and Storm again. And, I don't think anyone else has mentioned this much, but I'm REALLY excited to see if they introduce some new mutants. Unlike 616, we could potentially see new mutants popping up all over the place, which could be cool.
And am I the only one who is actually excited about UXM reflecting days of future past? I know a lot of people are pissed about it, but I think it's pretty cool. DOFP happened 30 years ago, before I was born, and i'd like to see what that reality is like Ultimatized. Of course, I'm hoping this happens without any deaths, so we'll see how that works out

Nowadays I am mostly a DC guy, but I always liked the X-men. But the regular X-men stuff look to confusing (at best) so I thought to give Ultimate comics X-men a chance. Jean Grey and Kitty Pryde are 2 of the X-men I really like, from the regular U. Is their characterization much different from the regular U? And generally how is Ultimate U shock-value wise? I mean I dislike the non-ending-full-of-tie-ins mega events in the regular Marvel U and I saw so really nasty stuff going on in Ultimatum. Are that kind of stuff the rule or the exception in the Ultimate U?

i think the first arc is only a couple issues long, so we shouldnt be looking for a "team" right away. the main plot is going to be "the government created mutants etc" and we probably wont have anything that looks like a "team" until the end of the first arc. SO PLEASE PEOPLE dont freak out on the message boards with stuff like -"how can this be an xmen book without teams and uniforms?"- until after the first arc. im sure it will all come together...... oh and i still like the idea of bringin wolverine back as a murderous bloodthirty evil villian.... wanna know how to challenge the x ultimate xmen? have them fight evil ultimate logan. did you guys see how cool evil AOA wolverine was in 616 x-force?

I'm hoping that this is only the focus of the for that time and at some point we can begin to see the surviving X-Men picking up the pieces to show the world that even if it doesn't want them, the world needs the X-Men.
As for Wolverine, it'd be an interesting idea but I'm not really sure just how long they'd last against an evil Ultimate Logan if it was a permanent thing, especially Jimmy who also seems to have Sabertooth to deal with and couldn't even stand close to a chance against him. But let's please not give him that huge A on his belt, it still looks ridiculous.

yea i think even though this is the ultimate universe, every xmen book needs that certain claw/nail/tooth element.... a certain typa "SNIKT" if you will.... and this series needs to explore jimmys development especially goin head to head with sabretooth. jimmy needs that antagonist to grow as a hero. and lets be honest- ultimate xmen needs the jimmy idea to work....

Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum are the only books who used shock value. They are also written by the same writer, Jeph Loeb
The current Ultimate Universe only has 4 books (3 ongoings + one mini)
I don't think you have to worry about big events.

This was actually the worst review I've read of this so far. I feel like this issue will be great to fans of the Ultimate line, but will not please new fans or inconsistent readers. Bummer, because I think new readers is what the UU needs. I'm looking forward to this, though.

Okay, so a friend of mine picked up 2 copies of the first issue by accident and gave me the 2nd copy since I'm his only friend who reads comics. Despite my "whatever" attitude going into the book I actually warmed up to it and liked it quite a bit, much more than I ever expected to. I read the book twice, the first time I read it without any thought as to how I wanted to approach it, so on the 2nd try I read the comic as if this was the first time an issue of Ultimate X-Men title has ever been published, both ways I enjoyed it just fine. I kind of went into it as if the team has had some crazy history and now it's time to get the band back together and make a run at things, either way I think the story is presented in a way that you could either embrace the past or go into it as if the books has never seen print. Kind of cool.
I doubt I'll stick with it though, I will give the 2nd issue a try, maybe the 3rd to say I gave it a fair shake but I don't know if I have time in my schedule for another team book. I guess time will tell.

Not so fast. My distain for Marvel is pretty deep, especially since the company decided to start doing "big events" all the time instead of just letting their comics and characters see print without getting involved with a major company-wide crossover. Constant relaunches with #1's, irregular creative teams, and stories that haven't excited me in a LONG time have become reasons why Marvel gets almost NO money out of me, but this is the first time since the original Ultimate Marvel Universe that I've been truly excited about a Marvel comic book (aside from when The Heroic Age first hit). I left the original Ultimate MU back around 2004 with a sour taste in my mouth and vowed never to come back, but I was presented with a free comic and I was happy to see that I enjoyed reading it, whether I stick around for long is another story.
I'm looking at this new Ultimate Comics relaunch as if the old Ultimate stuff didn't exist, otherwise I don't think I would have even read the book nevermind enjoyed it at all. But yeah, I could get hooked if the 2nd issues are as good as the first.

Ignore the company's policies, just focus on the good books that slip through the cracks, is what I say.
Also, check out Hickman and Ribic's Ultimates. It's insanely good.

I plan on it. In fact, I plan on checking out both The Ultimates and Ultimate Spider-Ma nstarting with the recent #1's and moving forward, but I have no intentions of going back and reading anything before the relaunch since I was disappointed at how diluted it all got. I'm looking at the new series as if all previous Ultimate story lines never existed, in other words.

I've always had a problem with the whole ignorance is bliss philosophy. However, for Ultimate I think an exception can be made. I would strongly advise that you not read anything about the events that transpired before the relaunch. You'll be doing yourself a big favor. And also give Wolverine and the X-men #1 a chance. That book is better than any X-book ever done in Ultimate by orders of magnitude.
