That's sad news. When I was managing a theatre in Beverly Hills, Ms. North, and her husband (I think) used to come in regularly. They were both very nice (which can be rare in BeHi!), and she was a lovely lady. I enjoyed her appearances as Blanche's sister on Golden Girls, and she was also great on the one season Diana Canova show, I'm a Big Girl Now. I think the title is what killed that show, because it was actually pretty good!

Vincent was absolutely THE kindest man. My mother, brother, and I met him by accident at a movie shoot about 13 yrs. ago. We saw him, recognized him, and walked over to ask for an autograph. He was very gracious, and we talked for a while.
Then Vincent invited us to his trailer, gave us some cold sodas, a few momentos of the movie he was working on, and we all BS'd for an hour. It was the coolest thing. I still can't believe he did that....

I was saddened to hear that Shelley Winters had died, but I'm surprised she made it this long. I attended a screening of Wild in the Streets more than a year ago, and one of her co-stars who remained a friend, said she was not doing well then. IIRC, she was one of the people who was mislead into "better living through chemistry" during the Studio System era, and I beleive that had a good deal to do with her many health problems over the last 20 years. She was an amazing actress though. Her work in the Poseidon Adventure is fantastic, and she gave the film its heart. She was also an actress who used the magnatude of her star to help others. Films like Cleopatra Jones, and Wild in the Streets were made, because she agreed to star in them, and got people to put money into them. She continued to work in indie films well into the 90's, as well as her great turn as Roseanne's Grandmother, on the eponymous sitcom. Funnily enough, she was two years younger than the woman who played her daughter on that show.

Good-bye, Mr. Furley!
from Yahoo! News (http://tv.yahoo.com/news/ap/20060225/114091812000.html)
Don Knotts, the skinny, lovable nerd who kept generations of television audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show," has died. He was 81.
Knotts died Friday night of pulmonary and respiratory complications at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, said Paul Ward, a spokesman for the cable network TV Land, which airs "The Andy Griffith Show," and another Knotts hit, "Three's Company."
Unspecified health problems had forced him to cancel an appearance in his native Morgantown in August 2005.
The West Virginia-born actor's half-century career included seven TV series and more than 25 films, but it was the Griffith show that brought him TV immortality and five Emmies.
The show ran from 1960-68, and was in the top 10 of the Nielsen ratings each season, including a No. 1 ranking its final year. It is one of only three series in TV history to bow out at the top: The others are "I Love Lucy" and "Seinfeld." The 249 episodes have appeared frequently in reruns and have spawned a large, active network of fan clubs.
As the bug-eyed deputy to Griffith, Knotts carried in his shirt pocket the one bullet he was allowed after shooting himself in the foot. The constant fumbling, a recurring sight gag, was typical of his self-deprecating humor.
Knotts, whose shy, soft-spoken manner was unlike his high-strung characters, once said he was most proud of the Fife character and doesn't mind being remembered that way.
His favorite episodes, he said, were "The Pickle Story," where Aunt Bea makes pickles no one can eat, and "Barney and the Choir," where no one can stop him from singing.
"I can't sing. It makes me sad that I can't sing or dance well enough to be in a musical, but I'm just not talented in that way," he lamented. "It's one of my weaknesses."

As a Kid, I LOVED Sid & Marty Kroft's H.R. Puf'nstuf. He was a pretty young guy, and was still working. imdb shows him with a credit in Moussaka & Chips just last year! There's also a really cool music store near "Comics Etc." in Rochester, NY, that had a couple of copies of "The Jack Wild Album" in its used vynil bins. I was always tempted to buy one. Now, it's even more of a collector's item. This is really sad news!

I loved the Tom Corbett books when I was kid. I borrowed them from the same uncle who introduced me to the Legion, and the two have a similar theme. Very post-war, American manifest destiny in space, and teens in action. I still remember a little of the old-school sci-fi description of the characters from different worlds (though not well), something about the sashes on the cadets from Mars, which were very different than those from Earth and Jupiter, IIRC. I'm going to check Netflix, and see if the serials are available. If not there, than maybe the Museum of Television & Radio has them.

Toth did the model sheets for Space Ghost, the Galaxy Trio, the Herculoids, Birdman, the Super-Friends, and I believe the Blue Falcon.
He had a wonderful economy to his line. Like Al Hirschfeld's characticures, he could pick out the essential and pertinent information, and convey it in simple power. His Wonder Woman was simple, elegant, and looked far better than she generally did or does elsewhere. His Space Ghost design is one of the best designs ever!
