Molly Hatchet's original vocalist Danny Joe Brown died Thursday March 10th. The cause of death has yet to be released but he had suffered a stroke in 1998.

Female Preacher Dead at 56


R&B legend Lyn Collins died of cardiac arrhythmia at a hospital in Pasadena, California, on Sunday. She was 56. Collins made her name as one of James Brown's backing singers, and earned the nickname "Female Preacher" for her wailing vocals. Her voice was also sampled on Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's 1988 hip-hop hit "It Takes Two" and has since been used by Ludacris. Collins was visiting family and friends California when she fell ill last week. She was due to embark on a tour next month . The singer was forced to limit her touring in recent years because of rheumatoid arthritis.

Terrible time for bass players ...

Bassist Percy Heath died yesterday. He was a fantastic bass player who played with Bird, Miles, and many more. His most notable recordings were made during his stint with the Modern Jazz Quartet. He is the oldest of the three Heath brothers (Jimmy, tenor sax; and Tottie, drums are the others).

His death is a very tragic loss as he was the last bassist alive who was actually part of the bebop scene started by Charlie Parker in the 40s and 50s. Our legends are slowly passing away ...

Hear about McKibbon a few days ago. Sad stuff. I have an album by Cal Tjader called "The Cal Tjader Latin Concert" with McKibbon on it. He taught me how to play Cuban bass through that recording. A true legend that will be missed.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, a steel guitar prodigy who rose to fame as one of the original members of the Flying Burrito Brothers, died Saturday. He was 72.

Kleinow, who also worked in film as an award-winning animator and special effects artist, died at a Petaluma convalescent home. He had been living with Alzheimer's disease since last year, his daughter Anita Kleinow said.

During a musical career that spanned six decades, Kleinow helped define the country-rock genre in the late 1960s and 1970s by taking the instrument he had picked up as a teenager in South Bend, Ind., to California. His prowess with the pedal steel guitar influenced a generation of rock-and-rollers, including the Eagles, the Steve Miller Band and Poco.

Besides co-founding the Flying Burrito Brothers with the Byrds' Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons in 1968, he enjoyed a steady gig as a session musician, recording with such singer-songwriters as John Lennon, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and Joni Mitchell, and bands as varied as the Bee Gees and Sly and the Family Stone.

He played and recorded regularly with Burrito Deluxe, a band he founded in 2000 following the rebirth of alt-country music and fronted until Alzheimer's was diagnosed.

Before, during and after his steady run as a Burrito Brother, Kleinow won acclaim as an animator, special effects artist and director of commercials in the television and film industries. His credits ranged from the original "Gumby" series he wrote and performed the theme music as well as designed cartoons and the relaunched "The Twilight Zone" to the movies "Under Siege," "Fearless" and "The Empire Strikes Back."

He won an Emmy Award in 1983 for his work on the miniseries, "The Winds of War."

"Paul Davis is a name that may not be the most recognizable by the general public in the music industry, even for people of his hometown of Meridian. But nearly everyone knows some of his hit songs.
"If you take Paul Davis' biography, it's going to be very small," said Van Mac of WOKK/The Radio People. "If you start stacking up his contributions to the music industry, it's very large. It's funny; he had so many hit records and the average person might not even know who Paul Davis is."
Davis released eight albums in his career with six singles reaching the top 20 on the Adult Contemporary charts, his highest being "Cool Night" which reached number two.
Mac said some of his fondest memories of Davis were when he was on stage for singer/songwriter nights at the Jimmie Rodgers Festival. Mac only knew Davis on a professional basis, but knew how to get on the man's good side.

Throughout the day, stations in The Radio People family honored Paul Davis' memory by playing some of his hits.
"Paul Davis, a singer/songwriter with a little bit of country influence, but with pop songs from the 60s and 70s that gave us great songs kind of like this one that we are going to start our double shot with, as we pay tribute to a Meridian legend. This is a double shot for Paul Davis on 106.9 The Buzz," said announcer Scott Stevens on 106.9 the Buzz.
Davis passed away at Rush Hospital from a heart attack. He was 60 years old. His hit "I Go Crazy" reached Number 7 on the Billboard Top 100 Charts, and remained in the Top 100 for an incredible 40 weeks. His songs "Cool Night," and "'65 Love Affair" also reached the Top 10 in 1981 and 1982, respectively.
Six of his recordings reached into the Top 10 on either the Billboard or Country charts. Davis was inducted into the Jimmie Rodgers Hall of Fame in Meridian in 1987.

I live about thirty miles from where Davis lived (and died), and I know each one of his hit songs word for word, for the Meridian pop radio station--Q101--would play them every weekend, even long, long after they'd died on the charts. His music brings back many fond, nostalgiac memories.
