The last time I encountered something like that, though it was mp3-related, it was NOT on an iPod, it had to do with the location of the files on the storage medium.
I made a folder with the right KIND of name and it let me drop all the files I could fit in there. Very weird.

In this case, its a form of drive corruption.
The question is - how do i repair it? Haven't found a tool that will do so and the built in diagnostics locked up.
I may just format the sucker and then use it as a storage drive (straight formatting kills the MP3 abilities of an iPod)

Hmm. I put it on automatic fill instead of manual and it's transfered 67 songs in so far. Looks like the "only 45 songs" issue may be corrected.
I'll try it on the desktop when I get home. That one has 9 gig of songs. I've only got about 780 MB on the laptop.

memory card slot (all-in-one) ...which, after dl'g an upgrade FINALLY recognizes my 1GB sd card. I was worried for a bit.

Here's a hint most of you probably know (or know a better alternative to), but just in case...
If you're going to use a laptop while in bed, put a hardback book or other hard, planar surface beneath it. The point being to allow for the exchange of air (through the fans) that's much more difficult on most comforters or mattresses.
Ultimate X-Men is my book-of-choice, at the moment, but I don't wanna screw up this sleeve so that'll change, soon. Maybe I'll keep one of those breakfast trays I was going to throw out and use it, instead.

Gotta love it.
I'm looking over the various downloads n whatnot. One of the surprising notes about known, existing issues with this laptop suggested contacting technical support for resolution. After 10-15 minutes on the phone, I was told that they KNOW of the issue, they KNOW how to resolve it, but they WOULDN'T resolve it unless I paid them. She said, after I expressed hesitation, she shared the fact that it is a settings-related issue.
So basically, they KNOW there's an issue. They know HOW to resolve it. They did not POST that resolution, though, and will not share it without being paid.
Just warms your heart.

I tried to post this the other day, but got booted.
Short version, I dropped my phone twice, recently. Once was on a busy-ass street when it was hot as FRICK outside. (The heat and traffic are irrelevant to the potential damage to the phone, but they didn't make ME feel any better... especially considering the fact that I was pushing my truck, at the time.)
I didn't have time to look at it, then, but later I saw that I'd bent the aluminum case worse than ever before. I couldn't even get the phone OUT of it til I got home and could finesse it. (Damn. This was supposed to be the short version.)
Anyway, I got it out, bent the case back into shape, and there wasn't a single scratch on the phone. Amazing. That's some of the best damned money I've ever spent.

Of what? The case? It's back into shape. You can see minor dents, but it doesn't do justice to the frickin' SMACK of the whole thing hitting the street.
I mentioned this to my co-worker, today, and she had me thinkin' it was just me. That was a scary and somewhat amusing thought, but I've SEEN mo' fo's with some FRIGGED UP ass phones... all cracked and tortured-looking.

What's the significance of that?
I've never had a laptop.

I guess I interpreted/addressed your question correctly. What's the significance of that?
I've never had a laptop.
I dunno about some of the higher-end models, but those that I'm familiar with did GREAT to make it to 2-3hrs on a single battery charge. Almost 4.5hrs? Completely unheard of... by ME, anyway.
I guess that's one advantage of almost everything being external. It doesn't even need to look AT the optical drive... not even to see if anything's IN THERE. No floppy, either. But I can hook'em up if I need to.
The weird thing is that my co-workers that used to HAVE this model laptop, before they were cycled out, were often complaining about not being able to hook up this drive or that drive, easily. They acted like they had to reboot every time they hooked up something, so I thought that was the case and similarly turned my nose up at the external-everything set-up.
Geez, people waste technology. It's amazing. I know folks, right now, who would miss out on an opportunity to better themselves of their (internal/external) customers simply because they don't know how to use... or even know that they HAVE certain technology that the company provides to them free-of-charge.
"I can't move this file." Burn it to cd, genius. Put it on your jump-drive.
Granted, the company needs to TRAIN many of them on how to do some of these things, but that's not the only obstacle. Mostly their biggest obstacle is themselves.

That's an article about sd card readers. It's within the Treo context, but there's valuable information for anyone who's interested in sd cards or convenient media storage resolutions, in general.
I'm very impressed. As cool as it would probably be to own the Ultra, I've already got one (and maybe two, if I keep the Compaq laptop) computer(s) with sd card slot(s). It could still come in handy (in fact, I may sell the sd card reader I already have in favor of the Ultra), but if it's a choice between the two, I'd go with the Media Gear thingee. Unless I misunderstood, it turns your sd cards into frickin' jump-drives/flash drives/whatever.
I like that a LOT. I keep a jump drive on my keychain (something I highly recommend to techies), but the capacity is more limited (although it's half a gig) AND it doesn't allow me to transfer data from sd cards. I'm going to have to make myself a tiny lil wallet 2.0 that I can keep my lil gadget accessories in. I think that MG gadget will be one of'em... especially for just $15!
Ahhh, the possibilities. *hopes someone else digs this*

The first thing you need to do is turn off "Hide extentions for known file types". Go to a windows explorer window View->Folder Options->View and uncheck "Hide extentions for known file types"
This will turn on the extentions. then you'll see things like after a file which will give you clues to what kind of file it is. .mpg or .mp2 for movies .mp3 for mpeg audio, .gif .jpg for images and so forth.

So this seems like the best, highest-exposure place for this question. I have two separate 20MB Quick Time videos from San Diego. One is BB doing his bluebird song. The other is Fabian doing karaoke. I can't link to them because they're too big for the web host I use. What's my alternative? Is there someone here that I can send them to in .zip form who can then post them?

I purchased that Media Gear device I mentioned AND I actually found a lil gadget wallet, of sorts. It's larger than I'd have liked and it doesn't have a belt attachment, but it's better than fishing around in my wallet for this adapter or that one... and hoping I don't damage them in the process.
By the way, that Media Gear device is a little different than the one I'd seen a picture of, I think (although I never saw anything on their site like what I THOUGHT I remembered seeing). Still, I think it'll come in handy AND it's only $9.99.

So, my PC is starting to make a whiny sound. Now, normally that would set me to thinking about dust in the hard-drive, but with today's hard-drives and as well-sealed as they are, I'm not that worried.
It's probably dust in the fan spindle.
But again, I'm not real big on the hands-on approach to PCs. I'm pretty sure I can open it easily.
So how about this:
How about a short guide or "how-to" on cleaning your PC's innards? How do I quieten that fan? Should I just run the vacuum over the motherboard, too? I would think it'd be obvious that I shouldn't introduce a foreign substance, like oil to the fan, but I may be wrong?
And would the Comet and S.O.S. pads be enough?

There was a great how to somewhere out there about how to make a filter for your fans...
Should I just run the vacuum over the motherboard, too?
First spray it to loosen the dust.
I would think it'd be obvious that I shouldn't introduce a foreign substance, like oil to the fan, but I may be wrong?
I wouldn't.
And would the Comet and S.O.S. pads be enough?
If you can avoid using your fan for a day or so, I'd just whipe it down with a slightly damp washcloth.
If you can't... a new one's like 4 bucks yoy know.

Anyone know anything about power inverters? (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=237&)
The site I linked to is a canadian site and they seem to be much cheaper than trying to buy the car adapter for my laptop that is offered by compaq.
They basically convert a cigarette lighter into a regular 3 prong plug.
I'm going on a road trip and wanted to have something that I could use to plug in my laptop and other electronic gadgets while in the road. There seems to be a bunch on the market and I was wondering if anyone had any problems with them. Do they have too much of a drain on the car battery?

That's the way I go. Get one of them and EVERY adapter becomes a car adapter.
They can be a little pricey, but MAN they help in a pinch. I've used them for laptops and portable dvd players and video game systems, etc.
I *think* I used to get a beeping sound when I used it with the laptop... but only in one vehicle, not the others, as I recall. At any rate, I'd suggest getting one that's a few steps above the simplest and cheapest, if possible. It may save you some hassles in the long-run.
Also, try out almost everything (within manufacturer's specs) that you can think of on the thing. That may help you avoid surprises down the road.
I strongly suggest getting one with multiple inputs - probably as many as you can easily afford. If you can only afford the one-input jobbies, I'd suggest holding off until you can afford one with at least TWO inputs.
Good luck.

But first (that didn't last long, did it?), let me just add - whenever you decide to get one... get two. Don't go through all of this hassle, then if something happens to it, you have to start all over, again. Heck, it'd make the shipping less painful (assuming it's combined shipping), if you went that way.

Heh. Nah. They come through, sometimes. But I've seen their adapters and not only do they cost too much, but they're without angles. An "L-shaped" adapter is preferable to an "l-shaped" one of equal proportions, because it's less liable to put undue stress on the device. I had to return one of my previous Treos for this very reason, I believe.
L's the way to go. In fact, if I can get a couple for a nice price, I'll try to get a third or fourth so I can send one or two to you. That'd save you from having to think about shipping.

Hmm... If you're really against getting rid of it, it might be worth your time to consider a bluetooth adapter. I'm not sure what they're going for these days, but IF your jack is the reason for the decreased audio quality, going wireless would solve that problem and provide other benefits.
That may not be an investment you'd wanna make, though. If that's the case, I'd unload it, now, while there's still a chance someone would want to buy it** (and, thus, partially-finance your 650 upgrade).
I've also been wondering about your web-surfing experiences. You mentioned that you hate posting from the 600. I was wondering why that is.

Awwwwww.
I saw some nice deals on eBay (the ones whose results pages I linked to), but they didn't explicitly state what their policy on shipping multiple items. Between that and other reservations, I thought I'd look, again, at the treocentral.com option. It's not AS cheap, but I'd guess it's more of a sure-thing.
. . .
I just checked treocentral.com and theirs are 5.95. Shipping three of those via UPS to my address in FL* would cost $4.95.
* - Of course, Florida's the one state where they'd have to charge tax.

Mighty sorry to hear that.
I'm mighty sorry that no-one CAN hear me.
Hmm... If you're really against getting rid of it, it might be worth your time to consider a bluetooth adapter. I'm not sure what they're going for these days, but IF your jack is the reason for the decreased audio quality, going wireless would solve that problem and provide other benefits.
I've thought about it. The catch is I'd have to get a SD BT adapter, and that fills up my SD slot. This means no using the Treo for MP3s, which is a goal.
Wired headphones seem to do the trick though. I have a cheapie pair I've been using.
That may not be an investment you'd wanna make, though. If that's the case, I'd unload it, now, while there's still a chance someone would want to buy it** (and, thus, partially-finance your 650 upgrade).
I've decided to stick with this until it dies, and then get the 650 when the next generation Treo comes out - unless the next generation is Windows Mobile (slim, slim chance), then I'm going to make the jump.
Why?
I like Windows Mobile a bit better. Less free apps, but a very robust OS.
I don't know what I'll do if the next Treo uses the new Linux-based OS. it sounds good, and I've always wanted a Sharp Zaurus... but it's untested waters for me.
I've also been wondering about your web-surfing experiences. You mentioned that you hate posting from the 600. I was wondering why that is.
Just a pain to read all the itty-bitty pages.
I do, however, use it for my livejournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/typolad/). I'm trying to find a free blogging app instead of using the browser though.

I've decided to stick with this until it dies, and then get the 650 when the next generation Treo comes out - unless the next generation is Windows Mobile (slim, slim chance), then I'm going to make the jump. Understandable, smart, practical, HOWEVER...
I dunno about other sources, but I remember when I first started drooling over the 650 and the 600 was right next to it. They were the exact same price... down to the penny, even. I asked the salespeople if there was so reason for this - maybe something I was missing. They always said they had no idea why they did it that way.
I'd even follow-up by asking,"Okay, so if the new one costs the same as the old one, but comes with upgraded features... why should anyone purchase the 600?" No one ever had an answer for that. I picked up my 650 in January, I think. You know the rest.
I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but I figured I'd beat this dead horse, just to avoid the misunderstandings I've been thinking about trademarking... Don't wait for the new one if you're just doing so because you expect the older one to go down in price. It might not.
In fact, I'll call Sprint PCS, right now (the provider I'm most familiar with) to see if they ever lowered that price...
Treo 600: $399.99
Treo 650: $449.99
Just a pain to read all the itty-bitty pages. Ahh. Hasn't been a problem for me, but I could see folks having difficulty with that. I think there's a font-sized control somewhere. Not sure if it's on the 600, but I thought it might be worth mentioning, just in case.
I do, however, use it for my livejournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/typolad/). I'm trying to find a free blogging app instead of using the browser though.

It's only called "podcasting" because someone decided that "everyone" has an iPod. You can really listen to them on any MP3 player as long as you have an RSS reader.
The Podcast interface in iTunes just simplifies it, in typical Apple fashion.

Because laptop batteries eventually, over time, hold less and less of a charge.
You're gonna have to hunker down and get a new battery.

Oh the humanity!
These sum-guns at Media Gear are KILLIN' ME! Then again, it may be my own misunderstanding. Here's the sit:
The 1GB card I said these computers didn't recognize? They recognize the card... when it's in another card reader I own. They just don't recognize the 1GB card in the Media Gear XtraDrive or whatever. Their site only shows downloads for Win98, though... as though that's the only way we could have a problem.
This is disappointing, but at least I know the problem's not with the card or the computers.

This is JUST what I'm talking about.
I got it working, but who knows WHAT worked?! I did two things before checking to see what worked (something of a mistake if you wanna know which thing resulted in success). One was that I plugged in the other sd card reader, which was how I knew that the problem wasn't (apparently) with the card. The second thing was that I ... hmmm... I think I DID check between attempts... Anyway, I took the card out then got a pen top and used it to briefly rub the contacts on the card (a card which worked fine everywhere else). When I put it back into the thumb drive and inserted that into the usb slot on this computer, it worked.
What the freak? Good end-result, but I'm hardly armed with a clear strategy for the next time this occurs.

Your contributions will decrease the percentage focused on other stuff AND give the rest of us more reason to focus on the things you want to talk about... because we know you're around. Purdy.
"Motorola tonight announced the Q, the smartphone that has long been rumored as the RAZRberry. This super thin, extremely small device only measures ; 4.6 x 2.5 x 0.45 inches despite its 240 x 320 widescreen display and full QWERTY keyboard. The Q will be one of the first Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, and will be running the Smartphone version. Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone features Windows Media Player 10, advanced synchronization with Exchange, photo caller ID and speaker independent voice recognition.
In addition to the QWERTY keyboard, the Q features a D-Pad and all the keys required for Smartphone navigation as well as a thumbwheel to ease one-handed operation. The keyboard has EL backlighting like the RAZR, however it features raised individual keys. The Q also has a 1.3 MP camera and LED flash, Mini SD slot and Bluetooth. It is expected in Q1 of 2006."
1) Is that 240 x 320 widescreen display of a greater resolution than the Treo 650?
2) Windows Mobile 5.0 sounds neat because it's newer, but it's the content that makes that mean something or mean nothing. The features they followed-up with were WMP 10 (which I dig), Exchange sync (which is probably helpful, but I'm not a big Outlook user outside of work), photo caller ID (which sounds like fluff... not to mention that it's a feature of the 650), and s.i.v.r. (which is available on the 650 for a one-time fee... free's better, but I'd imagine this'll cost hundreds more than the Treo will cost by then, so *shrugs*).
3) D-Pad? Maybe I missed something, but that LOOKS like they've got a QWERTY keyboard with numbers built into it, like the Treo does. Not bad, but not new.
4) Thumbwheel? I didn't see it in the photo. I wonder why that plus the navigation pad would be necessary.
5) The camera having a higher resolution is nice. The inclusion of actual *gasp* FLASH is nicER.
6) mini sd card slot?? Is that the latest or up-and-coming medium? If so, my existing cards AND card slots (on my computers) would be useless... and I ain't ready to switch. We'll see how I feel next year, though.
7) Bluetooth. I hope it's 1.2.

The "widescreen" bit intrigues me.

It's over-all user interface experiance of Windows Mobile that interests me. I agree that the features aren't amazing.
3) D-Pad? Maybe I missed something, but that LOOKS like they've got a QWERTY keyboard with numbers built into it, like the Treo does. Not bad, but not new.
The D-Pad is the dingus in the center under the screen... the five way Nav on the Treo, basically. No great shakes, but if it didn't have it it would be bad, so good to see that it is there.
4) Thumbwheel? I didn't see it in the photo.
http://img.phonescoop.com/img/n/1299_200x400.jpg
Lower right, the side-view.
I wonder why that plus the navigation pad would be necessary.
It's more ergonomic. Install 'Volume Rocker' on your Treo to see how much easier it is to use than the nav pad.
5) The camera having a higher resolution is nice. The inclusion of actual *gasp* FLASH is nicER.
VERY nice.

Well, it depends on the games there. What are you into? No City of Heroes for Mac, alas, but we have Everquest and Warcraft, amung others. If you want to play Doom 3, you're going to need to lay down serious cash and go G5.

Just a story I'm kinda fond of, but it's nothing mind-blowing AT ALL:
Yesterday, I walked outside to get something from the truck when a guy driving a truck (and haulin' something huge) asked about the Nextel office that used to be in our building. He didn't know they'd moved and it'd been so long since they left I'd forgotten if they'd moved somewhere else or just spread out amongst the other existing offices.
Anyway, he didn't know where the other offices were and didn't have any numbers to call, so I used my phone to go online and get a list of locations and phone numbers. It worked.
I'm not posting this for a pat on the back or anything. I just thought it was cool this situation showed that the latest tech-evolution isn't all flash and fluff. It can have very positive, practical effects on the lives of those who've embraced the technology and those who around them. I think that's cool.

I have screwed up and didn't have my settings right on the media center pc. My harddrive's about filled up and I had the thing set to delete old stuff to make room for the new.
I've lost multiple episodes of new Family Guy and JLU episodes. That saddens me.

I missed this thread too much. Also, we got our first ever laptop not too long ago, and tomorrow are trading it for a different laptop. I haven't seen it yet though I am informed I already need a new battery for it. Where do I go besides ebay for cheap batteries?
Also, we got a server donated to us here at work, and I am finally taking a look at it. We are a very small office with only 4 computers, but we are already at the point that the main computer has to be on nearly all the time, since we have a multi-client database, and two other programs whose main file resides on it. I have never had a server before, so I don't quite know what to do with it. Is it overkill at this point? I can see that we would benefit from one central place to put the programs and files we all share, but is this going to be too much to handle? I am what passes for an It here, I have no training but learn quickly. It's a x86 Family model 8 Stepping 12 running windows NT. It says it has 261,540 kb of ram. Thanks.
There are tons of places on the net to get cheap and/or used batteries.
A quick search gave me:
http://www.portatechs.com http://www.laptopbattery.net/
http://www.priorityelectronics.com/laptop-batteries.htm?ovt-laptop-batteries
http://www.batteryvalues.com/?source=FNWT&keyword
That's just to name a few. Google "cheap laptop batteries" and you'll get a lot of hits.

Not sure why this seems to be the case now, but apparently Windows Media Player can play the format that Windows Media Center copies tv programs to. This didn't appear to be the case before. Unfortunately, fast-forwarding doesn't seem to be an option, but it's better than nothing.
Very strange since I wondered about this before, tried it, and concluded that the files couldn't be played on anything except a media player (unless I burned them to standard dvd format, I mean).
This opens up all kinds of possibilities. If I didn't know better, I'd think this laptop was trying to convince me that it's worth keeping around.
EDIT: I just tried something. Since clicking ahead (along the tracking bar) didn't go over too well when the media file was on a disc, I transferred it to the laptop's harddrive and tried to play it from there. Bingo. I mean, it was already playing, but NOW it's allowing me to skip ahead to different points within the video. Very nice.

When I can afford to (I don't recall the latest prices out there), I think I'll switch from 802.11g router. I'd like to be able to transfer larger files within my wireless network... without the extreme delay or buckling.
If I could reach from any computer (within my network) to the media center files and play them (or at least transfer them) over the network, that would show even more potential.

I went to Best Buy and got a replacement for my sd card/adapter "wallet." It is nice and snug (a lil more snug than I'd planned, but at least it's not bulky) AND it's got a Velcro... clip or something (fabric) which I use to hold it on my belt.
It's almost always a good thing when you go somewhere to purchase something and the people selling it to you are using it themselves, at that moment. The young woman who sold me this pouch or wallet was wearing one, herself, when I walked up to her.
CompUSA's gonna get that other one back. I never liked the idea of having to hold it in my hand (thus increasing the already high likelihood that I'd accidentally leave it somewhere).
Too bad it's another thing to go on my hip, but it's incredibly lightweight and it's black (blends in well).

Hot damn. The Belkin router worked!
I dunno about the Linksys one, yet, because the doggone pci card I bought (for the G-network... yeah, I'd forgotten that part :o ) came with two discs - one was the old drivers and the other had the new drivers. I didn't realize that when I began the installation process... and no one at CompUSA said $#!+.
At least it's working. I tried to transfer a 1.7GB file across the network and, instead of taking 54 minutes (like with the b-router), it says it'll take 11mins. Impressive. (Of course, I could be jinxing myself, as it's not done transferring yet. 2 minutes to go. *crosses fingers*)

Oh, for anyone who might be interested, CompUSA has wireless network hardware on sale. It's all about mail-in rebates, but if you trust that, you could pay $5 for a router ("g", I think), $10 for a pci wireless card, and $10 for a pcmcia wireless card... again, all after rebates, of course.

Nice. We've got enough bandwidth, now to reach through to the media center (from another computer in the house), open a recorded tv show file, and watch it with smooth and clear image/audio quality.
It also helps that Microsoft saw fit to allow Windows Media Player to play *gasp* media center (recorded tv) files.

I'm forkin' out the cash to let Compaq fix my laptop. Fed-Ex will pick it up, today and I'm, supposedly, going to have it back in my hands in 5-6 business days.
If it DOES work out that way, I'll be pleased, all things considered. Sending off my projector for repair (to another company, of course) resulted in an incredibly quick turn-around time, especially considering the fact that the thing was going all the way to Cali for repair. If this goes as smoothly,... :D

Not sure if I mentioned this before, but when I called Compaq/HP's customer service line for technical assistance, they said they'd only help me if I paid them <$100 for an extended warranty for phone-based support. I told them they'd have to guarantee that they could fix the issue I was having at that moment, before I'd pay them for phone-based support on any other issues that may arise over the next 12 months. After holding for a while, I was assured that they'd be able to help me. I paid them, was transferred to a tech specialist, and was promptly advised that my problem could not be resolved by phone. *ahem* I'd have to send it to them for service (and, of course, pay more).
Skipping some details and fast-forwarding a month, I got them back on the phone, got the details of how the repair process works, then, before paying, told them that I want a refund for the extended warranty they had me waste my money on. After being on the phone all that time and having a repair sale just waiting, they agreed. Also, the price of shipping is included in the flat fee.
:D

Continued from another thread...Thumbdrives are too easy to loose. Ditto on the SD Cards, although I DO want to get a 1 GB for my songs soon. I wear a small pouch on my hip (much smaller than those nut-packs from the late 80's) and keep various smaller gadget accessories in there, including my Bluetooth headset (b/c some silly people here think it looks unprofessional).
I have them all on-hand when I need'em and if I don't want to (or can't) wear it, at least they're all together and I don't need to look in a bunch of different places... then stuff'em in my pocket.
I got the latest pouch from Best Buy for less than $10. The associate who helped me find it was already wearing one when I approached her.
plus, both of those offer less bang for your buck than an iPod. However, a dedicated pocket drive offers more bang. They can be used in multiple ways with multiple devices and don't require second- or third-party software to transfer files.
Digital cameras, mobile phones, pda's (or hybrids, of course), thumb drives... There are a bunch of ways to make these things work for you and do just about anything an iPod can do, but without the limitations, extra weight, or monetary investment.
Heck, if I buy a laptop drive, I've got an enclosure kicking about. They come in handy, but are harder to keep on you. I find this to be an option that's easy to lug around, but that doesn't weigh me down.
I just don't have the money. Another reason to go this route. If you buy an sd card, you're spending a fraction of the money you'd spend on an iPod and you can piecemeal your way to the full capacity an iPod has... plus use it with your digital camera and other Treo applications.

I can't wait to see your face when you get a 650 (assuming you don't decide to by-pass it for another model... pda, not your wife).
Now that Businessweek has confirmed that Palm is, in fact, making a Treo that runs Windows Mobile, I will be bypassing the 650 for that model.
I love Palm OS. I've paid money for Palm OS Apps (hblogger and Missing Sync, for example). However, Palm OS is just... better. I already have a licence for PocketMac, so I'd just hold on to the apps I've bought for another day.

I love Palm OS. I've paid money for Palm OS Apps (hblogger and Missing Sync, for example). However, Palm OS is just... better. You mean Windows Mobile is better?
Howzit better, again?
(Also, it's a lil weird that Palm would drop their own O.S. I'm not saying it's not true, though.)
Got any 256 mb cards laying around still? Hmmmm? I use'em with the cameras so I don't have any extras, right now. I'll keep an eye out, though. You'd be surprised what I stumble upon at the local flea market.
Two wireless-g routers for an insanely (zat a word?) low price.
I'm loving using PocketTunes. When a call comes in I just talk upside down into the phone and keep the headphones in. I feel so high tech. I think PocketTunes is the app. I just deleted. The trial period ran out. Unless you're talking about some Mac-centric app. you got to work on your Treo.
Assuming we're talking about the same thing, I liked how it allows shuffling and various sorting methods (including genre, which doesn't work as well as I might like)... unlike RealPlayer or whatever the Real app. is called.

1) The overall interface experiance. Not something I can quantify. I just like the "feel" better.
2) "right clicking" with a stylus rocks.
3) More robust Multimedia features. They're actually designed on the kernal level, instead of kludged on.
Of course, the cons are:
1) Less apps. More come bundled (a video player, an mp3 player, etc) but there are a lot less developers, and a truckload less freeware.
2) No easy source of cracked sftware. Did I say that?
3) Lower battery life.
(Also, it's a lil weird that Palm would drop their own O.S. I'm not saying it's not true, though.)
Keep in mind that Palm split into PalmOne (hardware) and PalmSource (software) a few years back. PalmOne just recently bought back the Palm name from PS, but lost thew biddign to buy PalmSource last week. It now belongs to a company called Access.

Although I may buy a copy soon. I already bought hblogger from the same company and am in a "want to support them" mood.

Real for Palm is so, so nasty.
I'm dying to try Core Media Player. Maybe I'll watch JLU on my Treo tomorrow.

1) Okay.
Sorry, it's just one of those "I like it better" things.
It's funny, but it's only recently that I felt this way. I used an HP Jordnada for a bit and hated it. But my Dell Axim? Man, you had to prie that off my cold dead fingers. Sure, it was huge and all, but it was like having a 586 in my pocket.
I got my free Treo and that was that though. Nothing beats phone functionality.
Mrs. MacQuarrie has it now.
2) Sounds good.
Someone tryied making an app called Snapnclick for Palm that sort of emulates the function. If you select text you get a pop-up menue that lets you select cut/paste/copy. it's a bit too intrusive though, and does not work across all apps.
3) Over my head, but I get the idea.
Well, for one thing, the latest two Windows Mobile Revisions have been designed for ARM chips from the ground up. Palm OS 5 was originally designed for a Motorola Dragonball processor. The first Arm Palms had some serious lags (especially the Clies). It's mostly defeated, but it's still a bit of a cludge.
Oh, did I leave out that I loath the fact that Palm's basically dropped thier Mac Support? Which is funny, sine Palm Desktop is the spin-off of Claris, a Mac app.
Palm Desktop Revision C for Mac is LEATHAL.
1) Treo 650 plays videos and mp3's using built-in app's. They're not terribly robust (assuming I'm using the word correctly), but I've watched videos I didn't make on the Treo... on the Treo.
I barely got any lag on the Axim. Like I said, interested in trying Core Media Player myself.
The 650 does video, but that's dang recent.
2) Hmm.
You know how to PM me. Send me an e-mail address.
3) Ouch.
It's not that Palms are THAT MUCH better, especially when running multimedia, but the Palm OS is better at conserving batteries.
Unless it's a life drive. Then, as we say in Yiddish, Gorrnish helfin.
Fortunatly, Intel makes Arm, and has made power managment thier bag lately.
I thought all that stuff was over with weeks, ago. I hadn't heard about this latest development. Geez.
palminfocentre.com's not the best site in the world, but they generally get to the news eventually.
HUGE troll factor in the comments section though.

You can get still buy an iPod mini. Especially for what you want to use it for, the iPod is the best of the digital music players. The navigation wheel and software are the best User interface for any digital music player. There are players that have features that the iPod doesn't, like a microphone, fm tuner, etc. But if you want it as a mobile jukebox primarily for your car, the iPod is the best solution.

Then there's the bang:buck ratio.
The iPod used to (I dunno if it still does) cost so much more than the other models that I couldn't justify it. I just didn't feel like its extras made up for the extras it lacked AND the high price tag.
Obviously PLENTY of people disagree with me, so... :)

Love.

Hey all.

I haven't priced anything recently, but for what it's worth, here's what I do...
I get an external enclosure on eBay or wherever the deal's good... then purchase an internal h.d. to put in it... I tend to switch between h.d.'s and optical drives to use with the enclosures, so that works for me.
Check it out, though. It may save you BIG BUCKS to purchase the two things that'll MAKE the internal drive an EXternal drive. It may not produce the savings it once did for me, but it's an idea.

I should ask, though... How much storage do you need? I'm gonna look up some stuff when I get a sec. That'd tell me where to focus my searches.
If you don't know, but can give us a general ballpark figure, that'd be cool.

http://www.compusa.com/products/compare.asp?
Here are some comparison figures to kinda get the ball rolling. I'd, personally, try to avoid any no-name harddrives (although I don't care about the names of the enclosures all that much). In that comparison chart are only internal and external drives. No enclosures - just to keep things simple, at this point.
Bah. I couldn't help it. I picked an eBay page o' listings for hard drive enclosures and it looks like they're selling cheaper than I thought.
The difference between an internal 200GB harddrive and an external 200GB harddrive looks like it could about $100. I haven't looked REALLY HARD, so you might wanna double-check that. If the enclosures are, as they appear to be at 7am, that's a savings of a good $80 or so.
Anyway, hope that helps. Gotta run, but I'll bbl.

That's a list of external drives. I'd lean toward the brand names you're familiar with.
Browsing through it I saw a $160.98 model, I think. I don't think I was familiar with the manufacturer, though.
HP had one for $179 and change.
Iomega has one for $129.99. I don't have a LOT of experience with them, but the name has been out there for a while. I think $129.99 is an exceptional price.
If anyone disagrees, feel free to speak up and tell me where I've got it wrong or right.

Woo-hoo.
Had to stop at Staples yesterday and pick up a cable for Suzannah’s new Zire (which she loves).
Ended up getting one of those neat-o “power squid” surge protectors, which are nice.
And a PNY SD card, 512 MB for only 29.99!
I tested it with an ep of Justice League and Core Media Player. Choppy, so I have to look at it.
Still, cool.
