I wonder how it can lose them too. Before I thought it was someone in the house deleting things, but, that person has been gone for months, and I lost a Dennis Leary and an Earth Wind and Fire last week.
I hope you're backing them up. If you weren't, now'd be a great time to start.
If it keeps happening, even if you do what I do (re: playing from the folder), you'll know it's not WMP-specific. Something else would have to be going on.

Ooohhh.
Hells yeah.

I assume this means you're confident that it's more... robust than the version that came with my Treo, eh?
I'd have to check, come to think of it.
What version is it?
Oh, and I did not respond to your earlier post so I will now:
Wireless Syncing via Ir is cool and all, and I used to love it, but you have got to try Bluetooth!
Thx, I will. *wonders, "remote" in what way*
TV, stereo... the ultimate universal remote.
Oh, and don't put Pool on it. You'll never get anything productive done again.[/quote]
Why are you in hell? Last night's tech-tivities didn't go well?
To say the least. 20 Gig are now working, but I can't even get my 160 to initialize. I'm going to have to take it to work, put it in a PC, and format it.
I don't even know which shows were ON that anymore.
Plus, two of my 20s won't even show up in disk Utility.
I think I know what did it. Not HOW it did it though.

That reminds me.. there's a few decent console emulators for PalmOS.
Nothing as robust as MorphGear for the PocketPC though. I love that thing.
Which reminds me, I have to re-load it and transfer in some ROMS for tomorrow.
Oh, and did I mention I won the busted mini?

Re: Pool - I SUCK at pool IRL, and I could not tear myself away from MegaSoft's version.

Yup. Although you can emulate older systems too.
Apple II for example: http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&prodID=16190
The Gameboy Emulator kicks, but may not work with OS 5 yet... http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&prodID=39038
There's more. PalmGear is your friend.Although, you should only use it to look apps up, and then buy direct from the developer. They screw them over big time.
If you have oh, two hours to spare, search there on "Treo".

See, the size just did NOT impress me. It's not that much smaller and slimmer than the 3rd Generation iPods and for that price? No WAY.
All Minis have the same capacity of 4 Gig. They run on a Hitachi Microdrive (similar to Compact Flash).
I got it specifically to get at the Microdrive. If it is damaged as well, then I am out $55 and will never, ever hear the end of it.
Honstly, I half suspect it will be too damaged. Microdrives are delicate, and this one was REALLY knocked about. After I bid, the gentleman added "may have been run over by a truck"!

The one on the Treo!I've been sharing Treo camera pix on the "I met Solaris, [etc]" thread. I'll try to say, in the future, which pix were taken with the Treo and which with a digital camera. That kind of thing is usually apparent from the image quality and the date in green on the upper right corner of the screen.

I don't suppose anyone can help me with the reason why or retrieval of the disappeared files from my external hard drive that I mention in this thread (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=39379), can you?
I saw something about a program called Spinrite, but well, don't want to spend $90 buying it.
What would cause a hard drive to delete the files like that anyway?

Sorry. I'm not familiar with that kinda issue. Whenever I can't find files, it seems to have something to do with some kind of user error (on my part or that of others).
The only suggestions I have are about backing up, which doesn't solve your immediate needs. Good luck, though.

Actually, I could USE a couple of suggestions for backing up and making boot discs and the like.
See, a couple weeks ago, something happened where one of the root directory files (hal.dll or somesuch) got deleted. The tech later said it was a virus.
At the first prompt, the PC asked for it to be replaced.
Now on mainframes, I know how to take care of this situation. I just point the system to the backup SYSRES and go from there. You don't even want to know hat happended next. Well, OK, you do, but I'm a PC moron, remember? My thought was *ding* HEY! I got these nifty restore discs that came with the PC! Yeah, that'll do the trick!
Yep. Full wipe. With the salt in the wound insult of FAILING halfway through anyway. Secondly, the tech told me that my CD-Rom backup was faulty and wouldn't retore when they did the windows restore.
All that porn, gone forever.
My problem was manifold:
1. I didn't have a boot disk floppy.
2. I didn't have a copy of hal.dll or whatever available to me.
3. I'm not conversant enough with DOS to be able to copy the file even if I did.
My questions are:
1. How do I make a simple get-to-the-DOS boot disk, preferably on 3.5?
2. How do I make a slightly more sophisticated boot disk, that'll get me to basic windows?
3. How do I create a full back-up on CD-ROM or whatever that the basic windows system I just booted up can use to get me back in the game?
4. How do I download files so that they're quarantined from the rest of the system so I can run Norton, Adaware, Spybot and CWS Shredder against them without risk to my system?
There, that oughta keep ya busy!

I had to get SOMEthing to put my Treo in, while I tried to find a nice case for it. A $5+ mini-camera pack from Wal-mart fit the bill. It's even got room for accessories, etc.
The next day I found and won THIS on ebay: http://www.cases.com/detail/mdctr6501a.jpg
It was affordable (much more so than the stuff the Sprint PCS store had to offer) and available, so I jumped on it. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find Treo 650 accessories (or sometimes support).

I'm looking for a printer that will fit on a thin wedge of office desk space.
It'll be a replacement for this one, the Pansonic KX-P6300 but needs to be a newer model.

I just HAD to come back and tell you all about the time I've had with HP's sorry-ass customer service department.
The first story is a bit longer than I want to type and probably that you'd want to read. Bottom line: I spent 20-30 mins. on the phone with someone who barely spoke or understood English, giving my phone number, e-mail address, etc. JUST so this fool could tell me to take my laptop to Radio Shack to get it repaired.
Waste of my #$^#$ing time!
Yesterday, I called HP, again, to find out whether a particular port replicator/docking station was compatible with my laptop since their website is next-to-useless. This time, I told the guy I wasn't interested in giving him the names of the first of my ancestors to set foot on the North American continent. I simply wanted to know the answer to a "yes" or "no" question. Howsabout dat sumgun told me he couldn't give me that INFORMATION without me giving him all MY information (which I STILL refused to give up)... then he said he said he couldn't give it to me if my laptop was out-of-warranty. WTF?
If ONE YEAR passes, HP refuses to even tell me if two of their products are even COMPATIBLE?

Morts: I almost wanted to mention something I just found out recently about the Treo 600. Whether true or untrue, I wanted to mention it to you BEFORE you got too attached to the device.
I asked a guy at the PCS store if the 600 and the 650 used the same battery. He told me that the 600 doesn't have a removable, replaceable battery - at least not in the same way that the 650 (and many handheld electronic devices do/) does.
Apparently, it's got a special kind of battery that requires extra effort to replace or something. As I find out more, I'll let you know. If you already know, cool.
I'm not saying this should be a deal-breaker for you, but it's something *I* would've liked for someone to have told me, if I'd have purchased the 600 (which I might've done if the 650 hadn't been at the exact same price).
Speaking of... have you received it, yet? Details, man! DEtails!

Speaking of... have you received it, yet? Details, man! DEtails!
On the battery issue... I have a new rule. I never ever ever spend money on devices that do not have a removable battery. It is that rule that keeps me from buying 90% of PalmOne's products.
I do recall noting the removability of the Treo 600 battery when it first came out. I will, however, check TreoCentral for more details on this specific issue.
As for did I get it... yup!
Picked it up from Austin last night. I had to stop by CompUSA first, because the guy had not included a charger/cable. I bought a USB charger for $20. I was kind of annoyed, because I KNOW I have one in a box somewhere.
Anyway, I charged it and found that it was locked to AT&T. I updated the Firmware and ran an unlocking patch at about 4:30 AM. Worked like a charm. I've been using it all day.
I need to get my hands on some apps.
I also need to get my hands on the palmpass.xml file, so I can patch a couple of apps for testing.
---
Speaking of removable batteries, you know what I still want?
A Sharp Zaurus: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS3449791061.html
I have wanted one of these since they were in development.
Dual CF/SD slots, slide out KB, Linux OS... mmmm.
They also have a clamshell model with a VGA screen! It was the first PDA to ever have one.
Oh, AND they came out with a model running a 4GB Microdrive for memory. Not available in the US though.
If these things could sync with a Mac, I'd get one.

I know the PCS store sells'em Treo 650 batteries for $59.99, an online store (Treocentral.com, I think) has'em for $49.99, and eBay has some for around $27 + shipping.

Sorry if I already shared this, but I don't see it on here and I've been trying to remember to post about it.
Among the many, many unfun customer service moments I've had recently is the following: Whenever I call Sprint PCS with a question about the Treo, it takes forever to get to someone knowledgeable because so few of them know about this device. After holding on, waiting for someone to answer, I usually have to tell 3 different reps. my name, phone number, password, and the nature of the problem just so the first two can forward me to the third tier person who, finally CAN help me or can tell me definitively that NO ONE there CAN.
On one such occasion, I'd gone through the first-tier rep, got to the second guy and BOY was he evil. My problem was that I couldn't seem to e-mail a photo from the Treo to an e-mail address using the Picture Mail option OR the Versa Mail (regular e-mail, with attachments) option. He tried to tell me how I COULDN'T do that kind of thing with my phone. When I attempted to correct him or demonstrate how there's a logical flaw in his telling me that an A680 (basically a regular picture phone) CAN e-mail photos, but that my more expensive, pda hybrid canNOT... he would put me on mute. His reason? He said he didn't want to have to repeat what he'd said to me. Ultimately, he acted like what I said made no sense. He discounted my logic in every possible way. If I pointed out that I had e-mailed pictures from this phone BEFORE, he dismissed that as if it had no bearing on the issue.
He even had the nerve to tell me (and this is what I don't think I'll forget any time too soon) that my Treo... IS NOT A MULTIMEDIA PHONE AND CANNOT DO THE THINGS I WANT IT TO DO - LIKE E-MAIL PHOTOS. He had the nerve to tell me that a phone that can take pictures, record video with sound, play videos with sound (even those not recorded BY the device), play mp3's, get online... this is NOT a multimedia device, and so it cannot e-mail photos... but apparently my old A680 CAN.
I was very displeased, to say the least. I still didn't curse him out, though. I simply verified his name and then told him I hoped he had a horrible day and hung up. When I called back to speak to a supervisor, the people who answered were courteous (and didn't try to give me the run-around) and had the conversation recorded, so they knew it wasn't just my word against his. Beautiful.
Not a multimedia phone? I don't care how they might classify the different types of phones - if MINE isn't http://www.treocentral.com/images/admin_uploaded/1107311606.gif , then what is... the A680 http://image.compusa.com/prodimages/17/12dbc43c-cae0-42f5-a2b6-c8e8f879b422.gif ?

The docking station/port replicator I ordered just arrived! I only won and paid for the thing on... Tuesday? Yeah. That's right. Tuesday. (For a second I thought today was Wednesday. I was about to give them TOO MUCH credit.)
Now that's awesome. I'm going to have to check these people out the next time I have HP or Compaq equipment needs (assuming the blasted thing actually WORKS, of course :) ).

There's a port on this docking station that looks like a single rca port, y'know? I don't know what it's actually for, but the symbol above it looks like a circle with a jagged arrow coming out of it.
I've attached a photo.

My laptop's a-workin', again.
After I've backed up some files (and I may even wait until after MegaCON), I think I'll send it to HP by-way-of-Radio Shack to get the repairs done. If something happens to it in-transit or while the work's being done, I don't want to 1) lose files or 2) lose the option of having it while I'm in Orlando for the 'con.

Don't forget to get some screen condoms for it. I bought all of the ones Radio Shack had on clearance.
Unfortunately, they have to be cut to fit the Treo screen. That sucks, big time. Application is difficult enough without having to "hem" the sum-gun.
(For those wondering, even the one that *came* with the Treo had to be cut to fit... maybe that's one of the reasons I never got around to applying it... before I lost it.)

However, first I need a new drive enclosure.
Yesterday I opened up my eMac and upgraded the harddrive from 80 gig to 160. A daunting task at first, but easier the second time.
Why was there a second time?
I left the stupid drive on cable select. Dur.
Now I need a firewire enclosure that actually WORKS so I can get my data off of the old 80. I'm looking at some of the dual enclosures that they have on eBay. I was thinking I could put my two 80s in there. I may splurge and get the swappable duals, so I can put my other drives in (scores of 40s, a few 20s, and a 10 or two)

While cruising TreoCentral.com, I noticed that Time magazine chose the Treo 650 as it's gadget of the week. I haven't read the entire article, but here are the excerpts they share at TreoCentral.com:
source:http://www.treocentral.com/content/Stories/542-1.htm
The Treo 650 is Time Magazine's Gadget of the Week.
"To date, the most successful marriage of PDA and phone has been the Treo. This is less because it's good at being a PDA (which, it turns out, is easy) and more because it's good at being a phone.
...
The most surprising thing about the all-new Treo 650—introduced as a Sprint PCS phone a few months ago, and just last week rolled out in GSM form for Cingular—is that it's not smaller or lighter than its predecessor. PalmOne took a gamble: rather than shrink down the guts to reduce its size, the company decided to make the guts better.
...
Having taken it for a test drive I can say it delivers most of what it promises."
Full article: http://www.time.com/time/gadget/20050209/
The article specifies the Cingular Treo 650. I'm not sure if some of the pro's are Cingular-specific or not.

I hadn't heard about this, but the full article says:
"Veteran users will be delighted to hear that there is now 23 MB of built-in memory that uses a non-volatile file system, so you don't lose data when you drain or change the battery. "
I don't know if that was a problem for the 600, but I do recall reading something similar in other articles. I just never associated it with a specific model.
---------------------------
OMG. This threatens to rouse my ire: "This Cingular edition can access the Web at better-than-dial-up speeds of 100 to 200 kilobits per second when you're within the carrier's EDGE network. "

Mmmm.
You were right about the battery west. Female canine of a thing to replace, and I might have to.
We can form a support group, as I am very displeased to discover that Cingular's EDGE network (which may or may not be a significant portion of their entire network) offers faster-than-dial-up speeds ... in some cases, 3-4 times faster (100-200kbps)... while Sprint's network gives me about 2-5kbps.
Maaan, if it weren't for all the other positives, I'd be VERY regretful about choosing Sprint over Cingular.
I spoke with a Sprint PCS rep just now who said they plan to increase their connection speeds to around 112kpbs (slower than EDGE's peak, but one helluvan improvement over what I've got, now). He said this should be released later this year, but he didn't know if it'd cost MORE to enjoy faster transfer rates.
It's hope, anyway.

I feel so much better.
First of all, I called Cingular's customer service line to find out more about EDGE. I figured that as a POTENTIAL customer, I'll probably be shown more love. I probably should've used this approach with Sprint PCS. However, the result was about the same. These people know next-to-NOTHING about their own services. I spoke to one person after another, getting put on hold time and again. The last time the person wanted to forward me back to the prompt menu thingee and when I speak to a person, ask for a manager. All I wanted was a map or even a verbal description of the EDGE coverage area, though. That should've been simple.
I thanked the nice lady and then hung up after waiting about 15 seconds. I then called 3 local Cingular stores. The first never answered. The second was disconnected or something. The third had one person who didn't know, but got on the phone and called another who said it should be on the website, which I'd already checked, but couldn't find.... blah blah blah blah.
In the end, no one was ever able to tell me what's what. HOWEVER, I DID find out that EDGE is apparently NOT on their regular internet access plan. One would need to purchase a card that allows one to get the higher-speed connection. The card ain't free and neither is the high-speed service.
Hell, SPRINT PCS already offers something like that. I turned it down b/c I don't WANT to pay $80+ a month EXTRA.
I'm feeling JUST FINE about SPRINT PCS, now. It ain't da shyt, but it least it smells about as bad as everything else.

Oh yeah. I'm seriously considering getting one of these Bluetooth headsets for the 650. The one they have in the Sprint PCS store isn't recommended by the people who work there (although one of the reps admitted that she hadn't tried it with a Treo, so it could've just been compatibility issues). I plan to get mine from TreoCentral.com or Handspring's site because I want something I KNOW will work with my freakin' phone. I don't know why that's such a foreign concept, but it seems to be.
Here are some that I'm considering: http://store.treocentral.com/store_images/product_images/accessories/thumbs/97.jpg http://store.treocentral.com/store_images/product_images/accessories/thumbs/165.jpg http://store.treocentral.com/store_images/product_images/accessories/thumbs/93.jpg I saw that last one (or something similar) on Alias too many times. I certainly didn't and don't want to spend $100 on an ear-piece - especially one that doesn't produce stereo sound! However, I'm having my Treo replaced because the headphone/headset plug is out-of-whack. You have to put it to the side to get stereo sound AND for the microphone to connect (im)properly.
I've never been too impressed with Bluetooth. I just didn't see why it was that big of a deal or how it'd make my life any easier. Now, considering the high-priced devices I've had plug-issues with, I think it'd be nice to decrease, not only the number of wires and cables, but the chances that the connectors will wear out from regular (or irregular) usage. I had to go to MegaCON without being able to use my headset because it was too much of a pain.
If I can just find a stereo Bluetooth headset, I'd be set.

That Sony *is* nice. I like the concept, but I don't see it being practical. I prefer an earpiece that isn't suspended from the inside of my ear. The ones I dig the most comfortably wrap around the ear. Plus this Sony one still needs to be connected to something else so that the caller-id screen isn't dangling, but IS visible.
It's purdy, but probably not for me. *continues to hope, in vain, for bluetooth headphones*
I was thinking that it might be worthwhile to have the bluetooth earpiece, then use headphones when I need to... and put them on OVER the earpiece. It'd require less plugging and unplugging (easier on the devices) and less switching of headgear. Hmm...
You'll have to wait to see pictures from my Treo 600. The cable fell out of my bag somewhere yesterday and the charge is allllll gone. No-one around here has cables except CompUSA, and they're pricey. Damn. Sorry to hear that.
I don't know if you have access to other power adapters, but from what I was told, the one for my previous phone (Samsung A680) has the right specs for the Treo. You just need the adapter. Just FYI.
For a slightly lower price, and that's including shipping, I picked up two cradles on eBay. Now I can leave one at work and one at home and never worry about losing charge.I really want a cradle, now. I think that's a more stable and gentler way to connect the Treo to the computer/power adapter. I don't think I'll need more than one, though.
I wonder how much they cost.

I don't know if your 600 came with the voice-dail option, but my phone didn't. My "old" A680 did. I find that version highly preferrable to the Sprint network-based on... or any such software where I have to customize the CRAP out of it for it to work.
The one I used during the trial period and that I recently purchased works right "out of the box." It even worked with my "sick voice."
Anyway, it's convenient as heck, so if you're looking for such a thing, I highly recommend it. I could p.m. you the other details, but I press a button on my earpiece, the software is activated, then I can dial by name or by number.
I ordered that Bluetooth headset/earpiece, btw. Hopefully, I'll have it soon.

HAH!
It used to be, actually. In our 4th floor Bronx Apartment, I had a closet o' tech. When Suzannah complained that I was hogging the PC. I went and built a second one. My first Mac, a gift from work, was put in the living room because unlike my PC, it matched. The PC was moved to the bedroom.
When we moved down to 2, I got rid of a lot of stuff, to save the trouble of moving it. I also sold a whole bunch of parts to buy Suzannah and iPod. Word to the wise...collect other people's dead laptops and part them out on eBay. I've made about $400 on screens alone.
In our most recent move I got rid of a LOT of stuff, just because we had no room. Daphna's iMac is a loaner machine, doing time at Rally and BBs, I swapped my bvack-up PC for a 160 GB drive, and other than that I just have a box of random parts.
As to the SD cards... one 16 MB card. THat's it.
The thing to remember is that for the most part, I'm a scavanger. I only buy things when I *have* to. Even then I like to find great deals. Like my Pismo Powerbook, which I bought from a person at my last job for about 300 LESS than it was worth... and I sold my iBook in order to afford it.
Got any old SD cards? I'll swap you a Bluetooth adapter for 'em.

My newest tech project starts tonight!
I have eight Hard Drives just laying on the side of my desk. Two 80s, a bunch of 40s, one or two 20s and a 12 gig. Since I can’t open the eMac, they’re just wasted.
I found an old Blue and White G3 PowerMac on eBay that had no HD and convinced the guy to sell it to me early for 55. After shipping, it cost me $75. A GREAT price. It’s supposed to arrive today.
I’m going to start by removing the DVD player/CD burner that’s installed. I’ll probably put that on eBay (unless someone wants to call dibs?). Then I’m going to add an 80 and a 40 to each IDE channel.
Step two is delayed for a bit, because I can’t find my IDE controller PCI card. I know I’ve seen it since the move, so it’s got to be here somewhere. If I don’t find it by next paycheck, I’ll buy a new one. They cost a fortune in store, but are less than ten on eBay. The trick is finding one that runs with Macs. I’ve already got the drive cages I need and a way to suspend them within the case. I might pick up some rounded IDE ribbons to help airflow.
Once I have that, I’ll put in the next four drives. The total storage will then equal something in the 300s. Sigh.
What’s really different is I don’t plan to Network it. My network is your basic 10/100. No reason to get Gigabit, since none of my machines support it, right? Even if I did Network… I don’t even have a monitor to configure that machine with!
Instead, I’m going to launch the machine in Target Mode. That’s my favorite Mac function of all. Just hold down the “T” on boot and all of the sudden…bam. Desktop full of disks. All via FireWire.
It only comes with 64 MB of RAM, but I’ll be adding memory. I plan on using that 12 as an emergency startup volume and putting OS 10.3 on it.
I am such a geek, that I have a little drool going on, just thinking about this.

It's a D-Link BT adapter, the same one that Apple uses internally. It's a desktop one that plugs into your USB port and allows wireless syncing. I got it on mega-sale at CompUSA...although I never got my rebate, the sons of dogs.
I got it for using with my Sony Ericsson T637. There's a cool app (two, actually) that lets you use one to remote control you Mac over Bluetooth. Sold that phone when I got the Treo. I could always go out and get a SDIO Bluetooth card for the treo, but I already got cables and I never use the Treo at home.
Anyway, It's also good for sharing the internet connection between a Bluetooth enabled Treo 650 and your PC. It's an alternative to cables, basically.
If you want to over something other than SD, feel free. Got any IDE controller cards, maybe?

On a sadder note, it seems the Treo is only a Bluetooth v1.1 device, which means, among other things, that it does not allow one to listen to tunes via the Bluetooth connection. I can't listen to my mp3's on my Bluetooth headset.... even if the headset is v1.2 (which it may or may not be). I dunno how old or new the message was, but something I saw said that Sprint had no plans to upgrade to v1.2 any time soon. :(
Man that sucks. I don't know how I'm going to make this practical. Oh yeah. The voice dial software I purchased... can't use it over the Bluetooth connection. The best I can think of is maybe I can activate it while the Treo's on my hip (easy enough), say "Call Morts" or whatever, and the Treo will hear me. That mic is pretty powerful, so it might.

Nah. I don't have a pic. There's nothing special about the way they look besides the etching (?) of "CompUSA" and disc specs on the "display" side.
At that price, it's worth experimenting, I'd think. $20 for 100 discs. Even if every other disc turned out to be a dud, it'd still be a decent price.

I almost just wasted money. Twice.
The first was for a new CD Drive for an iMac. I'm getting Brandon's old one (thank you, oh spouse of Nicole). This has a dead CD drive. Originally it was going to be an "internet kiosk" at my grandparents. However, since my folk's home PC is on the verge of death, it has been descided that they're going Mac via this iMac.
When it was just going to be for internet, I figured I'd just put an OS and apps on one of my spare drives, pop it in, and there they'd be. However, to be an actual main computer, it needs a CD drive.
iMac tray-loading drives go for between 25 and 30 on ebay. I love my folks, but the thought of spending that on a basic CD drive kind of bugged me.
Then it hit me: One search later and I found out that Iomega Predator USB CD-RW drives go for about half that, are more plentiful, and would allow them to burn CDs. I'm also going to order one to use with "Pinky," the iMac I loaned Rally.
Second waste:
I've set up a Blue and White G3 to act as a file server. Originally, I had planned to launch it as Target Mode and then just access the four internal drives. That didn't work, as it turns out that only later B&W G3s support this. Still, 400 Mhz G3 and 384 MB of RAM for $75, after shipping was just SUCH an amazing deal that I was cool with it.
Instead, I'm setting it up as a file server. It works okay, but sometimes I want to view the machine as an actual computer, not just have the network drives mounted on my eMac.
So I was going to buy a semi-functional LCD from ebay. You can actually gets ones for minor flaws for very little. I found one that had a 'static effect". To me, it sounded like interfearence, so it might even work fine with the right shielding. I was about to bid on it when it struck me:
My parents have a very, very nice monitor. They won't be needing it once they have the iMac.
I have to re-arrange my desk to store a monitor next to my eMac, but it will work.
Next up: A second Logitech MX receiver, so I can use one Wireless KB and Mouse to controll both machines!

Treo-FYI:
Some of you may recall that I found out that other Treo (kinda a PDA/phone hybrid) owners have used their device to establish a wireless internet connection with their p.c.'s.
At the time I hadn't attempted to do so, but have since become comfortable with the idea and successfully established such a connection. The latest news is that instead of an ~150kbps maximum, I Cnet.com rated my bandwidth MUCH higher - ~350kbps one time I tested it and ~250kbps another. (Compare that to a 56kbps dial-up MAXimum and you get the idea.)
Anyway, I thought that was pretty cool and worth sharing.
I'm considering, but don't plan on getting any time too soon a GPS peripheral (~$300) device that connects by Bluetooth. No wires. Beautiful.
*note: (after reading Sprint's T.O.S. and concluding that it was the AMOUNT of downloaded material that might be a problem, as opposed to other things I'd heard)

I finally decided to join the cool kids and am going to add a blog to my site. I'm mostly going to use it to let people follow the progress of my next graphic novel. Plus it will let me add more regular content to the site since I've pretty much stopped doing my diary comics.
I'm going with a WordPress (http://wordpress.org/) blog. Nicole knows the software pretty well. And one of the lead developers, Matt, is a friend of ours.

I'm about to dump cable for Dish Network (saving $20/month). Any recommendations on how to use my VCRs to record shows? Also I note that the recordable DVD players are coming down in price. Are those any better than VCRs? How long can one record on a DVD? (8 hours on a VHS tape)

Dammit, man. Yeah, that's it.
Back when, I told you that if you got that thing I'd have to ... do something. We're going to have to synchronize watches, compare schedules, and draw up GPS coordinates so that we're never in the same place at the same time.
Too bad. It would've been kinda cool to meet you.

Check cruciual.com and make SURE the RAM slots aren't Parrity. the G5 towers are. So if you have x amount of ram in one slot, you have to have the same amount in the other slot.
Sucks a bit.
Can I have your old tower?

Can I have your old tower? Not sure yet. I'm thinking about putting a bulletproof OS9 system on it for awhile. Either that or putting it in my bedroom for playing MP3s and watching movies.
I'll keep you posted, though.

G'luck.Wow, I just checked Crucial, and check this price (http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Apple%2BiMac&mfr=Apple&cat=RAM&model=iMac+%28G5-1.8GHz%2C+20-inch%29&submit=Go) out. The guy I talked to yesterday was figuring somewhere around $350 Canadian.
Now, here's the real question for Morts: does the case on the iMac pop open easily to install the RAM, the way a G4 does?

That is a very, VERY good use of an older system.

Appreciated.
Just so you know, it wouldn't be for me. I've a new hobby of "rehabilitating" older machines and passing them on.

See, THIS is why I love Crucial. You get a MUCH lower mark-up.

Oh yesss.
The Revision A G3 iMacs were a pain to get open, but once you did it once you could do it a million times.
The Slot Loading G3 iMacs were easy as heck.
The iMac G4s were a giant PITA, because you had to be so freaking careful with the LCD screen's little arm.
The G5?
Off pops the top, in goes the RAM.
It's actually the most upgradable imac.
Mind you, this is NOT from hands on experience. I've upgraded RAM on all models except the G5. Still, have seen walk-throughs.

I've a new hobby of "rehabilitating" older machines and passing them on.The way I figure it is, after a couple months I'll see if I'm actually using the thing at all or not. I mean, it's useless as a backup drive since the new computer is 160 gigs and the G4 is 20. Plus I already have that 80-gig FireWire drive...

Comcast charged me ten bucks a month with no installation charge for my DVR. Compared to TIVO that's a helluva bargain. At this point I would choose digital cable over a dish any day. I pay around a hundred dollars a month for four "basic" cable hook-ups that have no premium channels, and my theater room has the digital box and DVR, with five different HBO channels. (If you count the Latin one. :)). Plus, that includes the monthly charge for my cable modem. I'm pretty happy with it now. The packages that Dishnet and DTV charge for just don't compare.
My only complaint is the quality of the HD, but that'll change once they get everything changed over to fiber-optic.

Yep. That dual tuner is killer. If I'm not mistaken, you can actually record two different programs while watching a third. Am I right about that? I could have sworn I did it one time...

1. The 650 has a better screen, better keyboard layout, and Bluetooth.
2) I don't like the way the SD cards kind of just out.
3) Whose bright idea was it to put the headphone jack on the bottom?
4) The speakerphone rocks.
5) I need a new battery.

1. The 650 has a better screen, better keyboard layout, and Bluetooth. So, the comparison affects your enjoyment?
I ask b/c I've been wondering if people were fine with the way the screen looked before... until they saw the 650. I saw someone's Blackberry not too far back and it had a screen brightness and resolution on par with the Treo 600... I figured it was the same kinda thing b/c the Blackberry, in particular, is and has been pretty darned popular. (I know *I* used to drool over my mental image of the one my boss's husband had. She used to tell me about it and watch me lick my chops.)
2) I don't like the way the SD cards kind of just out. "just _____ out"?
3) Whose bright idea was it to put the headphone jack on the bottom? Heh. That CAN be annoying. I just received a new adapter for mine. It's got a right-angle orientation, which, I think, decreases the wear and tear.
I only use it when I'm listening to music through my really good headphones. (Of course, if Sprint/Palm would just upgrade the frickin' BLUETOOTH version, I could listen through my wireless earpiece thingee. Although I wouldn't expect the sound quality to be the best, it'd be convenient as HECK.)
4) The speakerphone rocks. You ain't lyin'. It could be better, but it could also be much worse. I just mentioned, last night, how that was one of the better features because it's powerful enough for me to play the music through the speaker while we were getting things done around the house.
5) I need a new battery. I'll keep my eyes and ears open. I don't know much about those, but there's probably a few decent options out there. I'm sure I don't need to remind YOU of Treocentral.com, but I will anyway. ;)
I wondered what else you use it for.

So, the comparison affects your enjoyment?
Very much so.
Keep in mind that I was a Treo devote from the days of the 180. In fact, I had it's "parent" device, a Visorphone. I'm used to this "We'll get it right the next time" mentality.
Handspring used to use non-Flash ROM in thier handhelds, so you were stuck with an un-upgradable OS 3.5 device when people were about to switch to OS 5. The 180/270 devices had a design flaw where the speaker wire was actually INSIDE the hinge, so after you opened and closed it a few thousand times, it would fray and become unusable. They fixed it with the 300.
When the Treo 600 came out, it screamed "let's test out the market". The mainboard actually had a spot for the BT module, but they left it out. The screen is a joke if you want to use your Treo as a game emulator.
The 600 camera sucks too, but the 650 isn't that much better, and anyone who buys a PDA or a phone expecting a hight quality camera is a fool.
Unless they bought that sweet, $800 Clie with the 3 MP camera. Then they're RICH fools.
"just _____ out"?
Sorry, "juts" out.
Heh. That CAN be annoying. I just received a new adapter for mine. It's got a right-angle orientation, which, I think, decreases the wear and tear.
Here's another complaint that spreads to both models: Would it KILL Palm to have used a NORMAL sized headphone jack?
I only use it when I'm listening to music through my really good headphones. (Of course, if Sprint/Palm would just upgrade the frickin' BLUETOOTH version, I could listen through my wireless earpiece thingee. Although I wouldn't expect the sound quality to be the best, it'd be convenient as HECK.)
Did you check the Shadowmite ROMs out? He might have hacked an improvement. The guy's a coding gawd.

Yeah. The SP on the Visorphone wasn't worth writing home about. The 180 and 270 had good sound, but didn't have a good mike. The 600 is leaps and bounds ahead.
I'll keep my eyes and ears open. I don't know much about those, but there's probably a few decent options out there. I'm sure I don't need to remind YOU of Treocentral.com, but I will anyway. ;)
I need to pay some people back first. It's not the end of the world that I have to have it in the cradle all night, but if I forget, then I don't have a phone till I get to my cradle at work.
I shouldn't complain, since it was essentially free. Heck, if I REALLY didn't like it, I could always sell it on eBay at a huge profit.
Except it does what I need.
I wondered what else you use it for.
Well, obviously, I use it as my cell and Planner.
I also write up step-by-step plans for my various personal tech projects.
My most common use for it is VeriChat. I'm not allowed to go on AIM at my work PC. $20 and one GPRS connection later, and I'm online and ready for action. I've tried CBRing from it, but don't really care for the experiance.
I also plan on doing some game emulation.
I had wanted to use it as a Siddur (prayerbook) but OS 5 STILL doesn't have reliable Hebrew support. The one Siddur app that doesn't require Hebrew is known to crash Treos.

I'm a lil hesitant, as I'm not sure that I'd gain much for the storage I'd have to sacrifice.
I also plan on doing some game emulation. I've heard whispers of such a thing, but I'd expect an emulator to be a resource HOG.
