I read somewhere that Morrison was going to give Superman a new power during his run. Anyone know what it's going to be?

Rainbow beams.

Seriously, no one knows but Morrison and Quitely. And the comic won't be out until probably the summer, so we'll have to wait.

Yeah. He talked about about the new power he got in the Silver Age, but to find out about Morrison's run, we'll have to wait till August at least.

BTW, will this book have its own continuity? Or will each writer's story be completely independent from the others?

BTW, his new power wasn't Rainbow Beams. It was the ability to create some sort of clone, which made things better than the original (according to Morrison).

morrison/quitely are doing 12 issues. all will tell a complete tale, which is unusual thesedays, but a refreshing change i'm really looking forward too. but the 12 can be read as one, "the 12 labours of superman".
sounds like what he's doing on seven soldiers, but on a smaller scale. where you can read one, but don't have to read the rest if you don't want to.

Yeah. It really sounds like some major ass-kicking series. Looking forward to it.

The series is slated for late summer (August, IIRC). Bare in mind, this is not in normal Superman continuity, so the power won't necessarily be seen in Action or Adventures.

But, if it isn't Elseworlds, it is Pre-Crisis (from what Morrison said), it isn't Ultimate and it isn't particularly out of continuity, then what is it?

He'll be able to peel the "S" off his costume and throw it like a giant cellophane net.

His new power will probably be the memory-erasing kiss. So if Lex Luthor ever discovers his secret identity again...

I can see it now.

"Pucker up, baldy!"

Actually, I heard it was the ability to turn back time by reversing the rotation of the Earth.

No silly, its the ability to shoot beams out of his hands... no no.. its the ability to look at architecture that has crumbled or been damaged and make it fix itself! :p

Back in the '40s, Superman had a power that's since been ignored: malleable facial features. He could morph his face to look like other people.

Just a few years ago, in an MOS issue, they showed Superman turning invisible. Supposedly it was caused by him vibrating fast or somesuch. He hasn't done it since.

And since Crisis, Superman hasn't had his time-travel abilities.

Hes actually doing that in Superman 1 and 2. (precrisis)
Even though I understand it that hes "morphing" his face by appyling make up :D

Here's what I read in the Wizard Magazine article:

The new Power is a side effect to Superman's over-exposure to yellow sun radiation. I don't think Morrison has actually mentioned what that "benifical side effect" will be but it will take place in the first issue.

As for continuity questions here's a direct quote:

And contrary to speculation, the ALL STAR books will not create a new or alternate continuity like MARVELs "Ultimate" books do, but will instead contain stories told in the present day but utilizing what could be described as timeless, Pre Crisis versions of the DCU's top characters. Just don't expect any dated, cornball flavor associated with the Silver Age of comics.

The idea is to present a line of comics that's instantly accessible using the core concepts that made the characters successful.

Personally, I can't wait!!! :)

Still there, although perhaps the writers feel there's no need to show it.

I don't know. I also read that the over-exposure will generate some sort of chain reaction in his cells. Doesn't this mess with the whole Superman Prime idea, created by Morrison himself?

Don't know, don't care.

The whole idea behind ALL STAR comics is to NOT to have to deal with anything outside of the CORE concepts.

I don't think Superman-Prime is, was, or will ever be, a CORE concept.

Well, that's OK. But I thought Morrison wouldn't mess with his own ideas. But I digress. Besides, Superman could very well become Superman Prime. Let's remember that DC One Million is NOT an Elseworlds.

Doesn't matter. I'm still going to enjoy it.

I want to play.

His new power is to float in the air on gaseous fumes like a hovercraft.
or
His new power is the ability to shoot lazers from his eyes at a sporting event and not get arrested by local authorities.
or
To pick someone up at 500mph and not snap their neck like a twig.
ok, I'm done

What "core" things are they going to use? If you think about Superman's beginnings, he could do anything and everything. So it will be interesting to see what they think is most important or overlooked.

This is Grant Morrison, folks. Nothing so mundane.

Superman's new power will be something along the lines of being able to Traverse the HyperMindspace via Internal Abdominal Vibrations.

Or something.

Psionic Ice Cream Vision.

Superman can make anyone feel 8 years old by looking at them.

NEXT!

(BTW, Morrison *is* using Solaris in this project so a DC1M tie-in wouldn't be totally impossible.)

In terms of continuity, I think the approach is basically this:

Imagine there have been no reboots in the last 65 years. Where there are inconsistancies, pick the version you like best but assume the last 65 years of stories took place since 2001.

So basically, this Superman probably fought the Ultra-Humanite, met the LSH as a teenager and died fighting Doomsday all in the last few years. He's teamed up with Vartox and Gangbuster against that space cowboy Terra-Man, General Zod, Professor Jax-Ur, Mr. Z and Rampage. He's dated both Sally Sellwyn and Cat Grant. He's a founding member of the JLA alongside Hal Jordan and he also knows Kyle Rayner. He has a Super-monkey and yet he's also fought Lobo.

How's that for speculation?

A DC1M tie-in? Hmmm... I'd look forward to that.

Morrison has said that the Superman in his stories are continuation of Superman's history, so it's doubtful he's using any power that we have seen before.

So that rules out the following:

Super-Shout
Super-Hypnotism
Super-Ventriloquism

Here's one possibility: in very, very early Golden Age comics, Superman used the ability to control his facial muscles to resemble another person, to "shapechange." This power was only used a few times before it was abandoned.

It's very likely Morrison has read the issues in question and is thinking of using that idea.

To be fair, that was not a Mark Waid created idea that originated with BIRTHRIGHT. It was an idea originated by Elliot S! Maggin, one of the greatest geniuses to ever write Superman, along with Otto Binder, Cary Bates, and E. Nelson Bridwell.

Maggin first wrote about it in his novel, SUPERMAN: LAST SON OF KRYPTON, where he described that Superman could see all beings that are alive as creatures of spirit with his super-vision. This is part of the reason for Superman's veneration for all life: he sees everything alive as beautiful and luminous.

The idea that as a result of this "Spirit Sight" that Superman refrains from eating meat is a VERY MARK Waid idea, however, and an interesting one.

Though it does mean Supes can't have his beef bourignon with ketchup. :p

I've wondered if DC has ever thought of bringing Maggin back to write a current Superman story.

But Doc Quintum also said that other powers might appear. And Morrison stated that in issue #3 (IIRC) he would get a new power...
