got a 2pack of the steamboat & WCW rise and fall dvd sets for my B-day a few weeks ago. the 30min ironman between rude and steamboat is freaking AWESOME. rick rude is truly underrated imo.

Rude was awesome. He should have been world champion. He was that good, and way ahead of his time in terms of mic work.

I think he's simply not remembered quite as well because he was a mid-card guy that never became a world champion. When you have year long or multiple year long title reigns, it really puts the lions share of emphasis on 2-3 guys tops. And as a result guys like Rude, DiBiose, and Mr. Perfect were never able to really penetrate that glass ceiling.

Also I don't think he necessarily had that one big career defining match or moment in the WWE. His feud with Warrior was somewhat forgetable.... largely because he was feuding with the Warrior. Never really feuded with Logan. His Jake feud was probably the biggest most memorable thing he did up there..

He did do SUPER well in WCW. He was beating the Stings and the Flairs and the Steamboats... but WCW hadn't exploded yet. And his career was cut somewhat sort by injury.

I'm almost postive there was a WWE dvd where they put over his work hardcore.
I know they brought it up in the ultimate warrior dvd, amazed at how good he was for getting a decent match out of warrior.
Another thing to remember about this though, is that a lot of people on the internet discussing wrestling are my age, i was like...(went to check) i was 7 when he left WWE, i didn't know what made up a good match when i was 6 years old, but the character was memorable.
It's like people put over Steamboat as a great worker, but we didn't know he was a good worker when we were kids. And Roode never had a super high profile match that the company says is one of the best ever on his resume because he was midcard.

You're still right in a way, i was just as young during Mr. Perfect, but i still remember him as a good wrestler. But Roode also had a pretty short career. A few years in WWE, then he left to do..something, WCW i think? But it was before WCW got hugely popular, and then he was around, but not as a wrestler.
So it could just be a case of people not seeing a lot of his work and nothing more than that.

I think what really helped me to identify who was a good worker and who wasn't when I was a kid was whenever an announcer identified a wrestler as a good technician. Or a good technical wrestler. It was an indication that they could do a lot of things well.

That hugely cemented Bret Hart's image as you couldn't go 2 minutes without an announcer mentioning his technical skills. And to a lesser extent guys like Perfect and DiBiose go it too. Rude got it a bit, but not as much.

if you haven't already seen, and do have the means seriously check out rudes matches in the 92 G1 climax tournament, particularly his matches with hashimoto and the final with chono, or even his matches in WCW with chono and kensuke sasaki of the same year. all xcellent but slept on stuff.

Man, I don't follow "rasslin'" much anymore but I did as a kid and went through another phase around college and I have always found Stan Lariatooooo Hansen to be captivating to watch. His Japan work was awesome and some of those AWA and NWA regional battles were just the best. Hansen and Brody!

Anyone saw Roddy Piper in "celebrity ghost stories" ? Roddy talked a bit about his entrance into wrestling and his friendship with Adrian Adonis and how he saw Adonis ghost after Adonis died in a car accident and believes that Adonis was looking out for him and his family , Roddy was getting emotional towards the end talking about Adrian. A pretty interesting account , the segment lasted about 15 minutes or so.

Piper was a coke-head, and was likely doing other forms of drugs, as well. The likely explanation to seeing Adonis's ghost is Piper was on hallucinogens at the time.

The original World Wide Wrestling Federation (now WWE) Championship that Buddy Rogers dropped to Bruno Sammartino in 1963 has been recently discovered in the attic of wrestler Johnny Barend, this according to a report from Slam! Wrestling who note that Barend’s widow was going through stuff in their house and found two wrestling belts (the original WWWF Championship and a US Tag Team Championship) wrapped in a towel, with the World Championship featuring a picture of Barend in the center.

Barend’s wife had no idea about the belts and have them confirmed by popular belt-maker Dave Millican that it was the original WWWF Championship. The report notes that Bruno Sammartino was unaware as to what happened to the original belt, other than the fact that the WWWF office were not a fan of it and made him a new one to wear during his run as Champion. The belts are now in the possession of Dave Millican at present time.

It is with deep sadness to announce that Michael Gossett, better known to professional wrestling fans as Mike Graham, the son of the late Championship Wrestling from Florida promoter and WWE Hall of Famer Eddie Graham, passed away at the age of 62.

While no other details have been released at this time, Gossett was in Daytona, Florida for Bike Week with his wife and was found deceased. Alex Marvez, a FOXSports senior NFL writer and Sirius XM NFL Radio host noted on his Twitter that he had received a text earlier today that Graham commited suicide.

On behalf of the website, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Mike Graham at this sad time.

http://www.ewrestlingnews.com/news/10622/wwe-finalizes-mid-south-tape-library-deal

WWE has finally completed its deal to get ahold of the Mid-South tape library. WWE negotiated a deal with Ene Watts--Bill Watts' ex-wife--and the Watts Family for around 1,200 hours of Mid-South footage from the late 1970s to the 1980s. Ene got the footage in her divorce settlement with Watts.

Jim Ross commented on the deal, saying, "If fans are able to somewhere down the road buy volumes where they can see X number of weeks of television or by the year where there's X number of episodes on a multi-disc set, they're going to see how it was like reading an action adventure book. One chapter led to the next chapter led to the next with a crescendo and then a payoff, and then the book continues."

He continued, "I think the episodic nature of it will be very entertaining, and then the other thing is there are a lot of guys who really established their body of work in that company that went on to do some really great things later in their careers on a higher level [nationally and internationally]. Seeing a young Ted DiBiase [in Mid-South], Ric Flair as the traveling NWA champion, guys like the Junkyard Dog and Butch Reed who was a great antagonist and a great protagonist — probably under-rated, by and large — and there were so many guys who came through there like the Steiner brothers and Magnum T.A. Guys like that, people will get to see their formative years, and to me it's always fun as a fan because you can see glimpses of greatness, but you can also see a little bit of green, varying levels. So there's inexperience, too, and it's unique to see how they evolved."

Wade Barrett Picks Five-Star Match
By Marc Middleton
Nov 8, 2012 - 7:49:32 AM
- The WWE Classics "Five-Star Match of the Week" for this week was chosen by Wade Barrett. He picked Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog from SummerSlam 92. Barrett commented:

"[The Bulldog] was from just down the road from me, near Wigan. I'm from Preston, very close. He was my idol as a kid, so this was a great moment and great to have a pay-per-view like SummerSlam in the U.K. I hope we get that again one day."

Haven't really read all the way through the thread, so I hope I'm not breaking in on anyone's conversations or anything. But a thread about old school wrestling? I just gots to post in that!

Jim Crockett Promotions was the promotion I grew up with as a child.. I even met one of the Mulkeys in a K-Mart once upon a time, long about 1986 or so. I remember he asked who my favorite wrestler was, and I said Rick Rude. I always sided with the heels, what can I say. Lots and lots of stories from the good old days, like the night we went to wrestling, front row ringside seats, and Nikita Koloff looked at me, and very nearly made me go potty on myself. For months after that, any time I acted up, my mother would call up a certain cousin we had, put me on the phone, and he'd hit me with his most Nikita-like "Chagoindown!" and I'd immediately straighten up and fly right. Another time, another show, we caught a glimpse of the Midnight Express through the curtain, and I very loudly cut loose with a "Hey! It's your man, Momma! Didn't you say Stan Lane was your man?". Really embarrassed her, good and proper. Seems like he even blew a kiss her way as he made his way to the ring that night.

WCW seemed to evolve out of Jim Crockett Promotions to me, so that became my home promotion in the 1990s. Got to see an awesome match between "Stunning" (Not Quite Stone Cold Yet) Steve Austin and Ricky Steamboat live and in person at a TV taping once upon a time.

Good times.

Cesaro Picks Five-Star Match
By Marc Middleton
Nov 29, 2012 - 9:13:39 AM

- This week's WWE Classics Five-Star Match of the Week was chosen by United States Champion Antonio Cesaro. He chose Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar from No Way Out 2004. Cesaro said:

"I picked this match because I just saw it recently before I debuted here in WWE. It’s just an awesome match. I think it might get overlooked sometimes, but that match just shows how awesome Eddie Guerrero was and how good Brock Lesnar was as well. It’s so good and the story is so well told, you just get into it every single time. You can see how the crowd is quiet watching it at first and by the end, everybody’s on their feet. The victory celebration of Eddie makes it at the end. That just puts the dot on the ‘i,’ as we say in Switzerland."

Rhodes Picks Five-Star Match of the Week, Sheamus Promo from WWE Main Event, Warrior
By Marc Middleton
Jan 10, 2013 - 6:50:39 AM

- Here is the Sheamus promo from last night's episode of WWE Main Event:

- The Ultimate Warrior gets the Superstar Spotlight on WWE's website today.

- This week's WWE Classics Five-Star Match of the Week was chosen by Cody Rhodes and he picked Kerry Von Erich vs. Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Title on May 6th, 1984 for the WCCW David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions event. Cody told WWE's website:

"Fritz Von Erich actually said that David Von Erich himself was really close to being NWA World Heavyweight Champion. David’s untimely death put Kerry Von Erich [in the title picture], but Kerry would’ve become the most popular of the Von Erichs regardless of what happened just off sheer look alone. Nobody looked more like a star than Kerry Von Erich. Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn’t take a picture with him because of that. What I remember about that match was not just Texas Stadium in Dallas being outdoors and the huge amount of people there. But the end of the match came with a simple backslide. It was a really, really beautiful thing."
