I haven't read Green Lantern in a while and notice that Ganthet has been assigned as the green lantern of sector 0 and uses a ring. Since he is a guardian, why does he even need a ring. It's sort of like Superman wearing kelvar armor.

(SPOILERS)
He was kicked out of the Guardians of the Universe because of exhibiting emotions, along with his lover, Sayd. The two then created another Lantern Corps called the Blue Lantern Corps, which relied on the power of hope. Then Nekron, the lord of the dead, came along. Hal Jordan and others were in the area and he copied their rings for a small rag-tag team of reinforcements. Ganthet put a ring on himself and is a Green Lantern again.
Long story short, he isn't a Guardian, only a Green Lantern.

So they kick him out and he doesn't even have any guardian power any more. I though the green power is part of the Guardian's biology and can't be turned off.

Originally, i though that was kind of stupid... though there have been some MASSIVE retcons since introducing the 'Emotional spectrum'. originally, YES. the Green energy was a natural ability of the Guardians, developed over the millenia. THe Central Power Battery actually was charged BY the Guardains.....
Lately I don't think they claim that anymore... As much as I don't like Ganthet suddenly needing a ring... it DOES have a little bit of precedent.
The guardians booted Appa alli apsa in the 70's and made him pink skinned and mortal. Completley powerless... Later he regained his power from staying on Oa... but, the idea of cutting guardian's off from their power HAS been around for a while.

Did he actually loose his powers? I thought he just made a ring as a symbolic badge of office. I'm sure I've seen him use his powers since.

He still uses the same type of constructs, but that's more to do with his personality than his powers.
Technically, he created the Blue Lantern Powers with Sayd as they were the first two (besides the entity) to use a blue lantern ring.

Why you ask ?
Well, god only knows what goes through Geoff Johns' head.

I think the ring was more for ceremonial rather than practical purposes. He's still a Guardian regardless of whether he's hanging with the other gnomes or not. He still has his powers, but was making a point to the other smurfs that he identified more with the rank and file GL's than he did his own brethren. Of course, the Guardians can't see the forest for the trees, so I'm sure the gesture was lost on them....
