View Full Version : Why is Shania Twain so derivative and all-around crappy?

All her songs sound like aural turds and she can't sing to save her life.
Plus, she insists of calling her pop drivel "country"...
WHY?

She sings quite well, but her material is undistinguished.

With the amount of crap music out there it’s useless to question its awfulness. Whenever you find yourself analyzing crap music, simply listen to something that doesn’t suck.

She's good-lookin' and shacked up with a producer.

Cool username too. Very metal. \m/

Marketing.

Somebody should really tell her that just because you put some fiddles and steel guitars on a pop song, doesn't make it country.

I live in her home town. She once played in a park near my freinds house. Complete lip-sync start to finnish. Even all the little talking intro parts, you know what I'm talking about, every one of her songs stars with her saying somthing stupid like "let's go" or "ya'll ready".

My uncle shagged her in high school.

Was she any good? She's a hottie, but looking hot doesn't always equate to being hot how and when it counts.

95% of the supposed "country" artists since the late 1970s need to learn this. Almost all of the "country" hits since then have been weak pop and rock tunes with steel guitar.

I’m not sure I’ll have to ask him next time I see him.
He left her for a chick who had her own car. So she couldn’t be that good.

Here’s another pointless fact that somehow involves me and Shania. The Mayor of my town is the old guitar player and song writing partner of Shania.

He won a bunch of *Junos.

* Juno= A Canadian music award.

Wouldn't that make Tom Waits, The Commonards & Mellencamp country too?

I dreamed that I kissed Shania Twain last night. Which is odd, because I've never liked her music or even thought about her particularly.

Actually, she looked more like Jennifer Garner, now that I think about it...

Why it would!

(Of course Raindogs at least had "Hang Down Your Head", which was actually a country tune so he has better claim than all of the above in that regard, though I'm not very familiar with Mellencamp outside of what gets played on the radio.)

Selling points man. There are two of them and they kind of stand out.

I know it is sorta pointless to question it...it just baffles me that today, with the exception of USHER's current album, her 2002 cd UP is the album that moved the most copies in the last 5 years, easily (5 million in America, in spite of the fact that her songs aren't played on pop radio anymore and she's not played on MTV and such anymore) and before that, yep, the biggest album in a LOONG time was...that's right. her Come On Over.
But UP is so baffling to me, because it was actually one of the worst albums to be released by a mainstream "artist" ever, it got reviled by music critics, basically it was a carbon copy of Come On Over, who wasn't hot shit to begin with (but still managed to move FOURTEEN million copies in the USA)

Now, I'm ok with so-called commercial pop music, it doesn't bother me...but we all know that there are some artists out there that are able to fuse commercial sensibilities and some semblance of artistic essence...but Shania's songs are unapologectically commercial without any redemptive value.
She admitted herself in a 2002 Rolling Stone interview that she and her producer husband (Mutt Lange of Bryan Adams and Def Leppard fame) only release songs that they believe will do well chart-wise.
She said that her "artistic" songs are tucked away in a vault and that she doesn't want to release them because she feels her fans won't like them.
That is sad and pathetic...she basially felt her fans will leave her if she didn't give them cliched hooks and derivative melodies...

What kind of artist is that?
I mean, it's nice to sell millions of records, but once you have sold over 80 million records worldwide, why do u care?
Why not release the songs that make you happy...the songs that mean something....
It's not like she is starting now...like I said, she has career totals of 80 million records...certainly she isn't starving (not to mention her husband's wealth after making millions off his producing DL, BA, Heart, Ac/DC and other successful acts)

In response to the original question, well, why not?

I mean why single her out from all those countless other no talent hacks who insist on filling the airwaves with their special brand of "music"? Because she's easy on the eyes? Maybe. But then again why do people like her and Britney Spears actually manage to sell all those albums. MTV videos I get, record sales... not so much. Are people just idiots? Or maybe they're just tasteless? Nah, I ain't a cynic at heart so I'd rather not accept these answers. BUT damnit, I really don't have any other answer! Any ideas because I'm at a loss?

My mom loves Shania Twain. I'm not going to call her an idiot for it. She likes what she likes. Unless she's just giving in to her lesbian side (which is really something I don't want to think about), how Shania looks isn't playing a role in why my mom likes her. She just does.

People should be allowed to like what they like.

This whole attitude of people being better than others because they like different music, or "better" music, is really starting to bug me.

Yeah Up was one of the worst records in recent years, Shania Twain apparently can't actually sing or write for shit and it's an Avril Lavigne style scam, her relationship with her husband is allegedly very creepy and mind-control style and all the way through her career she's neck and neck with Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch in terms of writing the worst lyrics ever.
But come on, happens all the time. Bad stuff sells from time to time, get over it.

It basically boils down to this - most people simply have shit taste in music.

I never said (and I have never believed) that I'm better than others if they like Shania and I don't.
I don't think anybody is "better" or "worse" according to their musical taste, and nobody (at least on this thread) has said anything of the sorts.
My opinion is that Shania's music is some of the worst, most amazingly soulless drivel on the radio, but I don't have any problem with her fans.
That's their business if they like her.

She's popular for the same reason Britney Spears is popular.

When they sing, guys close their eyes and imagine they are shagging her. When girls listen, they close their eyes and imagine that its them guys are imagining shagging. Either way, the person listening has positive shagging thoughts and associates those good feelings with the artist.

Perhaps Mr Kramer has the answer?

She's a hottie, but looking hot doesn't always equate to being hot how and when it counts.

Exactly. What's the good of being with somebody who looks 'hot' if she's a dud in bed? You're not gonna be satisfied with just looking at 'em all the time.

Pure speculation, of course.

And as for her 'music', I'm still convinced it's the result of a bet of some kind; "Let's make the absolute worst songs we can, polish 'em up real good, make her look real hot in the video, and see how many people buy this shit!"

Of course, she's hardly alone there.

Shania = yummalicious!!

She's about the only country I'll listen to. Not sure why and I'm not going to convince others to listen to her.

She probably does do some lip-synching but I'm guessing she can sing. I think before she hit it big, she was some singing Vegas showgirl or something like that.

Several years ago, there was some uproar in Minneapolis because the major local sex toy/sex video store (Sexworld) was running a billboard ad next to a major street leading into the downtown area. One of the local news programs did a funny editorial piece where the reporter stood in front of the billboard commenting on the controversy. Then the reporter pointed across the street, where there was big billboard advertising a new Shania Twain album, and the reporter commented, "and this billboard is selling pretty much the same thing."
