View Full Version : Passage of Time in the UU

In preparing for the new launch of the Ultimate Universe, I've been reading through Ultimate X-Men as I had missed it the first time around and I had noticed that they seemed to have an odd passage of time such as having Jean go from 17-20 through the course of the series. Now this wouldn't normally be strange, but there were signs of Spider-Man early on even having him appear himself in a time when Jean was 18. But Ultimate Spider-Man's book has shown that only about a year, if not a little more, has passed since Peter became Spider-Man.
I had read once that before Ultimatum that the books weren't written realistically as though they were happening within the same universe as events that happened in one book didn't hold any weight to another. So my question here is, which timeline should I take as fact, the pre-Ultimatum's Ultimate X-Men's or the post-Ultimatum's Ultimate Spider-Man's?

Technically none of them make sense. Spider-Man is supposed to be one year but we all calculated it to be more around the 19 month mark. Ultimates states that the invasion happened a few years ago. X-Men has people changing ages constantly. And Fantastic Four I think states it takes place over the course of a few years as well.
I'd like to think the 19 month mark is the most accurate. Either way, the ReBirth UU is supposed to have a tight-knit timeline now, but we'll see.

Basically you had the writers working on UXM trying to turn them into 616 X-Men, instead of sticking to he UU theme.

What is tight-knit suppose to mean?

Exactly.

Don't worry about the details since it doesn't matter.

The books will be more connected and in sync with each other. They can refer to each other now without there being a huge delay between them. In the earlier days of the UU Bendis couldn't acknowledged things from the Ultimates v1 and v2 in Ultimate Spider-Man because the Ultimates didn't came out regular. This will be possible with the relaunch books.

Oh i hope so.
It could also partially fix the passage of time problem.

There seems to be a lot of time issues with the UU, so I usually try to overlook it. For example, in the Ultimate Doom trilogy the narration says that Peter would have his IQ tested a year after the that issue (it was like 145 or something) and it would indicate he was a genius. Then he died shortly thereafter. I assume a year didn't pass. There is a bunch of other things, but that sticks out the most ot me.
I also kind of think that that little bit of writing fits in with my theory that Bendis changed the end of Ultimate Doom from what it was originally going to be when they all decided to kill Peter. I don't know if Bendis ever confirmed this, but it seems to make sense given how the series ended.

I don't really considerhat to be a time issue as much as either Bendis leaving it open for Peter to be able to return downers down the line before a year passes in the UU, or just one of those dangling plot threads that doesn't go anywhere and is never mentioned again.
