I've been buying back issues for '80s comics and have started out with Eclipse Comics. Do any of the comics take place in a shared universe? I notice that Crossfire has a mini titled "Crossfire and Rainbow" and it says that it's a DNAgents mini. Are the only Eclipse titles that share the same universe Crossfire, Crossfire and Rainbow and DNAgents/New DNAgents or are there others?

As far as I know there was no shared universe. The crossovers wouldn't be a shared universe any more than the Punisher/Archie crossover puts Archie in the MU.

This http://www.comics.org/series/3701/covers/ was Eclipse's crossover/shared universe event.

Those are Mark Evanier titles. Crossfire is actually a spinoff of DNAgents. Rainbow is a member of DNAgents and Crossfire's girlfriend. Crossfire is a great book, by the way, it's set in Hollywood and really benefits from Evanier's experiences there. There's also a Surge miniseries set in the same universe. And a three-issue comic called Whodunnit? that's a spinoff of Crossfire if you want to get the whole universe. Whodunnit? was a mystery comic where you can win a prize by solving the mystery.

Eclipse is basically famous for one comic. One comic that for years people would go...who has the rights. Who owns....

Thanks guys. I knew about Surge and about Total Eclipse but didnt know about Whodunnit.

I guess Eclipse was like Image is now in that characters crossed over into each other books but didnt share a universe.

Basically. Which made the crossover-as-cheap-publicity-stunt just a little cheaper than it otherwise would be.

Eclipse is basically famous for one comic.

As one of the world's very few Destroyer Duck fans, I take issue with that. (But yeah, MM was definitely their biggest title.)

Really> Steve Gerber is, flat out, my favorite scripter in comics and that Kirby guys alright too, but this's didn't do much for me.

Conversely, Tales of the Beanworld is my favorite comic ever. So Eclipse has that goin' for it.

Wracking my brain on this one, but can't come up with anything. I thought maybe Johnny Nemo or The Masked Man might've made a small guest appearance in another comic, but couldn't find anything. Don't even recall there being a whimsical crossover in Eclipse Monthly.

From what I understand, all the Eclipse writer/artist teams were pretty autonomous in creating their own thing.

I know I came to the right forum when random Eclipse questions are getting asked.

Cheers.

Basically. Which made the crossover-as-cheap-publicity-stunt just a little cheaper than it otherwise would be.They also provided a "money back guarantee" if you didn't like the book and could return it if you didn't like it. As a result, there were plenty of free copies at some comic shows in the 90s.

They shouldn't have tried an x-over--I think the strength of the 80s independents (First, Eclipse, Comico, Renegade), at least in terms of product, is that they let the creators work independently.

Scout by Tim Truman was a really good comic and kind of slept on from the 80s indies.

Eclipse also put out Zot! which is also a timeless classic of the period.

I was also a big fan of Michael T. Gilbert's Mr. Monster, which was a fun read and something worth searching out if you are a fan of say The Goon or maybe Mike Allred's Madman comics.

I always liked Tim Truman's Scout series. I've wanted to go back and get Airboy as well, was that Chuck Dixon?

Miracleman was fantastic and if that is all Eclipse is remembered for then that isn't a bad thing.

But... Scout was pretty damn good.

Zot is a classic. I've been looking to find some old Mr. Monsters. I can't even remember how much I liked the stories, but the image of the cover art sticks out sharply in my memory.

I don't recall reading Scout back in the day, but I did pick it up in a bargain bin several months ago and it's sitting over there within reach. Today I gotta take a sick day from work. Maybe this'll be the day I read it. Cheers for the rec.

Hmm. Interesting...

...no wait, it's not interesting. I can only assume you guys either smoke some of the good stuff or haven't read many creative stories (no offense):biggrin:

Airboy was Chuck Dixon and was pretty good. They kind of tried an odd super hero line with Airboy. Truman did a couple miniseries with I think JK Snyder III called The Prowler that I remember digging, that was kind of a pulp Shadow character.

Eclipse also followed up on some of the Pacific comics and did quite a few 'modern' EC scifi/horror comics many based around Bruce Jones doing the writing/editing/artwork and a bunch of great artists. They weren't necessarily EC or Warren homages, but they were short kind of gotcha kind of stories often with fantastic artwork. Can't remember exactly who did the artwork, as I haven't seen any issues in 20+ years, but those books usually had some good stuff within them. I think one was Alien Worlds and there was a couple others.

Funny thing about Crossfire was as the series went on, he was less and less in costume. I haven't read those in years too, but I liked them quite a bit.

Everyone talks about the 80s super hero stuff, but my favorites once I was old enough to drive was all of the indie comics - First, Eclipse, Comico, Dark Horse, etc. The good stuff they did slayed most comics of the time and then the big two poached all of their talent and they just couldn't follow up on those early successes as there was no real "back list" for trades and some really went on when they should have built to conclusion (which a couple did like Mage/Grendel etc.).
