Something about this character I have always liked dating back to the 80s.
I liked what they did with him in Generation Lost.
But his own book? And why not just keep him in JLI?

This needs a poll.
They thought it was interesting to give him a solo. Plus their trying to make JLI more I so how many Americans are u going to stick on the team.

Not really interested in atom. Even in generation lost the only benefit i got was the cool future. Im not sure that this JLI is a sequel to generation lost so that might explain him not being there.

JT Krul is one of my favorite writers and I like the idea behind Captain Atom, BUT (and this is a big but) there are so many other titles that I want more.
There is also the fact that Firestorm is so similar to me (both characters with surpressed unlimited power) and Firestorm seems so much more epic from the interviews and stuff. Something about two great writers on one book attracts me more than one great writer. Firestorm just beats Captain Atom for me. Thats not to say that I wont eventually pick up Captain Atom. Especially if it has good reviews. Ill eventually pick it up.
I dont think hes on the JLI because he has a lot of potential as a solo.
He IS in the Justice League corner of the DCU, so we might see him on the JLA or JLI sometime soon along with Mister Terrific and others.

He couldnt do much with Green Arrow because Brightest Day had such an influence and hes just started his Teen Titans run. I dont feel like hes had enough time on Teen Titans to judge.
And a lot of the Green Arrow series was actually really good.

Hmm well he is about to get 12 Issues before his run ends so seeing as Henderson had the same amount, I think 12 is plenty. And right now I gotta say its getting low marks.

Right now it is a no for me. I tried Krul on GA. Not bad but not enough to hold me. I loved Captain Atom at various times in the character's history, especially the Cary Bates series. This doesn't sound like quite the same character.

Well part of that is backlash towards the TT roster he presented. A diverse roster under the two previous writers run became lilly white and I don't think it was ever made clear why that happened. Was it him or the edtiors at DC that caused that.
I tihnk one of the threads on here might have his reasons for that roster change.

From the sound of it, they're going to make him too powerful to be a useful superhero, much like the Spectre. I'm not really interested in reading about a character who is just going to go through a lot of angst over being excessively powerful and losing his touch with humanity. I'm not planning on getting the comic, unless it turns out I'm wrong and he really is going to be having superhero-style adventures.

I'm not getting both Firestorm and Captain Atom both, but chose Captain Atom.
This reminds me a lot of Valiant / Acclaim / Dark Horse's Solar Man of the Atom / Doctor Solar character, whose one of my favorites.
I don't expect it to last, but I'm getting it.
I've liked Captain Atom in every incarnation and am really hopeful for this.

The inspiration for Doctor Manhattan in Alan Moore's "Watchmen," DC's retelling of the origin consists of Air Force pilot Nathaniel Adam becoming Captain Atom after being blasted by nuclear energy during a military science experiment.
his "Captain Atom" is "big, epic science fiction storytelling with a solid human core."
it's about how Captain Atom sees the world given all the powers he possesses and the difficulties he has finding his place in it. We are really tapping into an almost science-fiction vibe as we explore the actual ways in which Captain Atom interacts with the world around him and the difficulties that can represent giving what he is capable of.
Captain Atom was just an Air Force Pilot until an experiment went horribly wrong. Instead of killing him, it gave him vast nuclear powers. He is a man living on Earth, possessing the near limitless powers of a god, which isn't always as grand as it sounds. It's a story of how he uses those powers as a hero, but more importantly, how he copes with the burden of such abilities while trying to maintain his humanity.

I don't like the new bald look. MY Captain Atom has hair!
Somehow, the baldness leads me to think that such might not be the only change in his design... they might have changed something else. If they came up with something that better complements the baldness I might check it out, but so far I'm not interested.
I just don't want them to turn him into a Dr. Manhattan rip off, it wouldn't make sense, because it's actually the other way around.

I'm almost definitely picking this up, I like the concept and you can't say that it's a complete rip off of a previous series when you've only read a couple of interviews and the description in the solicit. The only work of J.T.Krul that i've read is Green arrow which I enjoyed.

This. I like Captain Atom as a character and thought he was great in Justice League Europe. I don't think I knew he was the same guy from the Charlton books at the time. Love the artist on this new series so that alongside the character has me locked in. Since Solar is ending with Dark Horse (I think?), I hope this book captures the feel that I have been getting from that book. This is one of the books I will be getting from the comic store, and not a month later by digital for less dough.

I'll probably give the first issue a look to see if it's any good, but it will depend on what impression that makes as to whether I'll be getting it regularly. I liked the old post crisis series and will be hoping there is still a lot of that character here.

I'm not getting any DCnU books except Batwoman. Captain Atom did interest me at first, but I don't think this is the same character I've loved since his first DC series.
I'll flip through it at my local shop and see if it will change my mind.

Wow, not a lot of love out there so far. I'm full on board with this. While traditional superhero books are my mainstay and manga and other alternates don't catch my interests much.. bridge concepts like Captain Atom, Swamp Thing and to a degree OMAC are my most hotly anticipated September scores. Entire worlds of alien races, supernatural mysticism or alternative views of man with godlike abilities and the repurcussions of it are not too appealing. But when you take a guy like CaptA and inject him in the comfort zone of the DCU it attracts me like a moth to a flame. Yeah, Firestorm's on my radar, too, but I see them as a totally different animal. One is a man seperated from the humanity he once knew the other is two individuals having to cope with amazing abilities in a completely unique and challenging situation. Their personalities and circumstances lend them to totally different stories and perspectives even if their abilities may share some aspects.

I started reading comics as a little kid right when the Carey Bates series started, so I have fond memories of the character as one of my first #1s. Krul's Green Arrow had a bunch of promise I never really thought it lived up to (the whole psychological angle with the forest), but it was alright. I'll at least check out the first issue of CA, see what it has to offer.

That's sort of the problem for me. I've already read Doctor Solar. Why would I want to read it again with Nate Adams? It sounds like too much of what has already been explored to last. I will try to give it a look out of love for the character but DC has done wrong by him for so long I don't hold out much hope.

I think DC has missed managed all the Charlton heroes after Crisis on Infinite Earths. There's been some good moments, but DC has let writers make mistakes on how best to represent them. Captain Atom has gone through enough bad characterizing and now it looks like they want to make him into Dr. Manhattan. :frown:

Not a fan of Captain Atom even if the concept can be good, and for me JT Krull is, at best, a mediocre writer. Maybe my opinion will change in the future: I couldn"t stand Winnick, and now I think he is a decent writer. But, I will wait for the first reviews.

This isn't on my pull list for September. I'll probably glance through it in the store to see if anything catches my eye. For me, the deciding factor was the dramatic tension -- he's losing his humanity. That can go two ways: he loses it, or he regains it. The former might be fun to read for an issue or two, and the latter kind of seals off further exploration. I don't know how long they can milk the tipping point to make it hold my interest.

First of all - thanks for letting me know what his powerset was; I didn't know that. And, that's part of the reason I didn't see him as so special.
But, when I look at a character I can usually get a sense of whether they would be cool to me or not, and Captain Atom falls in the "not" category for me. He's just aesthetically unappealing and his powerset doesn't seem to do anything for me.

I would like to try Captain Atom, but it will probably be a lot lower of a priority. I enjoyed what they did at the beginning of the Cary Bates run in the late 1980's, but the series lost steam after a while. Also read his last two appearances in Action Comics (by Robinson) and was unimpressed, but I haven't enjoyed anything by Robinson since I resumed regular comic book reading about a year or so ago.
What little I've read by Kruhl (or however you spell it) hasn't really thrilled me, either.

Would love to buy a Capt Atom book, one of my favs from the nineties and I quite liked the one in Generation Lost but...
The new one sounds like a different character and not one that interests me and he looks a bit weird. JT Krul is just an average writer so I wont be buying this.

I'm definitely buying this. I'm a big fan of Captain Atom - the Ditko version, the Bates/Broderick series, his time in JLI/JLE and his recent Generation Lost appearance. He's an interesting character with a lot of potential and I'm hoping Krul will make something of this series. Plus I'm a fan of Freddie Williams artwork.
