View Full Version : The "new Justice League" positivity thread!

With all the negativity I've seen around message boards, I thought it might be time for those of us who are looking forward to the upcoming Justice League comic to speak up.

The roster: Personally, I'm really looking forward to the new line-up. I'm a huge fan of the "Big 7", and it was Grant Morrison's run that brought me back into comics in the 90s, but the shift from Martian Manhunter to Cyborg doesn't bother me. I like J'onn, and I've never really followed Cyborg, but if this is the "new" history, then I'm happy to accept that. He adds a nice visual difference to the line-up, as well.

New members: I'm keen to see the former Satellite-era members returning (Green Arrow, Hawkman, Atom, Firestorm) - some fantastic choices there, especially since I don't think they've all been together since that era.

Mera and Deadman will make interesting additions - I'm at least interested to see what purpose they will serve on the team. And Element Girl and Mystery Woman are kind of blank slates for now.

The artwork: I'm really enjoying the two pieces I've seen so far. Some fans have picked them to pieces, but I'm really impressed by Jim Lee's latest efforts. The pic that was leaked yesterday was particularly impressive, and really solidified that "new Big 7" feel.

The costumes: Wow. So much vile for the new/updated uniforms, but I'm so impressed by them. Superman rightfully looks like a powerhouse with his armour-type outfit (that still looks streamlined), as opposed to lycra, red undies and a spit-curl. Wonder Woman looks stunning, and I couldn't care less about shoulder-straps, etc - she looks modern, and the silver helps differentiate her colours from those of Superman.

Flash, GL, Aquaman and Batman only have minor changes, and none that are garish. Cyborg looks like a technological WMD - for the first time, I've actually found his look to be striking, instead of "glow-in-the-dark".

As for the "matching collars" - I think it's great. This is a team. It won't hurt for them to have something similar style-wise. Some eras of the X-Men and Doom Patrol had almost identical outfits, whereas Jim Lee has just added some common/similar elements, whilst keeping individual styles.

Here's hoping the final artwork, and Geoff Johns' writing will be top-notch. But as this is the "new Justice League" positivity thread...... I'm sure they will be!!

Feel free to share your (positive) thoughts here. There's no one opinion, but it'd be nice to hear some more positive ones, looking forward to this new series and line-up. :)

I'm always happy to see Hawkman & Green Arrow on the same team I'm looking forward to seeing plenty of clashes between them.
I'm also glad to see Cyborg given a big role in the DCU, fan couldn't ask for a better chance to break out than a big 7 membership under this creative team.

I'm a big Aquafan so having both Arthur (the original) & Mera on the team is great for me & I'm a bit of a sucker for shrinking heroes so I'm happy to see an Atom on the team, I'm hoping it's Ryan.

Overall really looking forward to this, it will be the first time I've regularly read the League since Morrison.

I am very excited to see what will transpire in the new DCU. I can't wait to see retelling of the League's formation in the first story. Which foe will come to spark the formation of the JLA? Starro? Despero? Kanjar Ro (lot's of O's)? Invisible Destroyer?

Nice to see some positivity. While I don't love everything about the new JL, a lot of it is very encouraging to me, and I trust Geoff Johns. I especially like his "character-based" approach to the team, since my favorite era of the team is the heavily-character-based Englehart/Dillin run.

Very pleased to see a lot of these additions. Having Aquaman and Mera on the team is a nice choice, I feel; I always liked the idea of a married couple on the League, and again it harks back to when the Hawks were both members when Englehart wrote the book. As Blind pugh said, Hawkman and Green Arrow on the same team is always fun, and I also always liked the dynamic of having Barry and Oliver (both of whom are friends of Hal's, but not necessarily of each other) on the team together as well. Now if we could just get Ollie and Dinah back together...

Also, adding some new characters is a great idea. The League has always done well with characters whose only (or least main) home is the League book itself, and I'm sure Cyborg, Atom, Element Woman, et.al., will all do well in this regard. Looking forward to seeing how Deadman fits in too.

Only real downsides for me are that (like many others) I miss J'Onn, and I don't like Superman's new costume. Some things really should be sacred.

This is a good idea for a thread. I think JL's art looks awesome, and so do the character designs. I don't really mind the change in Superman's cosutme. It makes him look really cool. I would've liked to see Martian Manhunter rather than Cyborg (and just the Big 7, for that matter), but it won't affect my opinion of the book too much, I think. Plus, Geoff Johns writing it? Spectacular!

Also, it's pretty cool that Hawkman, the Atom, and Mera are on the team.

Has it been confirmed that Mera will actually be in the Justice League. There was some speculation that the figure that looked like Mera might have been someone else.

I hope it is though. Aquaman and Mera on the Justice League may cause me to reach for my smelling salts. Swoon!

I hope they give Starro, Despero, Kanjar Ro and Amazo a rest. I think Justice League comics have pulled from those villains too often.

They can give the Injustice League/Gang, Prometheus, Eclipso and the White Martians a rest too.

I'd like to see a fan-favorite villain of one hero move up to the big leagues and challenge the entire team. Sort of like how Osborne ended up taking on all of the Avengers.

I think Circe could give the entire league a run for their money. What if Scarecrow or Mr. Freeze or Mirror Master or Ocean Master somehow hatched a plot that threatened the entire world?

I loved when Al Ghul went up against the entire league in Tower of Babel.

And newer villains are also awesome. I loved the ancient league from The Obsidian Age and the Id and Cathexis from Divided We Fall were great.

Johns tends to build on and revamp old concepts. I doubt we'll see something entirely new...

I hope this line-up sets the stage for a Morrison-style Injustice League, with each member being an opponent for the new Big 7.

Picking the biggest names, we could have Lex Luthor, Joker, Cheetah, Sinestro/Hector Hammond, Captain Cold, Black Manta and Deathstroke! That would be a pretty formidable line-up!

I'm really looking forward to the new JL and it looks like the company PLAN is to have it do what it used to do for me decades ago, serve as a single series where readers new and old can get a healthy dose of the biggest names in the comic-verse.

How many folks plan on getting the 'digital combo pack' for this #1?

I haven't bought JL for a while. I longed to see the big 7 again and yes, I'll miss J'onn but time to give someone else a chance. Why not Cyborg?

I would rather a great stories with new uniforms than lousy stories that have classic costumes. We've gotten so much of the latter especially with Superman. I hope to see Supes get some respect once more and really intrigued to see Johns handle my fave Wondy. Can he write her? I am willing to see! Bring it on!

I am so positive about this title that it hurts.

This is exactly what I want out of the Justice League, the dream Justice League book to me. To me the Justice League are not about deep stories or anything meaningful, it's a Saturday morning popcorn book with big action and the biggest stars imaginable.

The "big seven" here is killer and the extra characters definitely give it that sweet 70s Satellite Era vibe that's so good. I mean this really IS the Justice League, period. I even like Element Woman, she fits well into the team and has a "classic DC feel." The secondary choices, like Mera, Hawkman, Atom, Green Arrow, Firestorm, ahhhh that is so perfect.

Jim Lee is a very special artist to me, I mean really any time he does interiors I feel fortunate. I've never followed a series of his monthly as it was coming out, so this is nuts to me, I am so hyped to read this when it releases.

I think Geoff Johns writing has bombed pretty bad lately but this is the right book for him. Simple characterization with big moments. That's what he does anymore and that's what this book is perfect for.

The more I look at the costumes the more I like them. They are tacky and overdone in an "action figure" way, and that's what I want, an "action figure" book. Bigger is better here.

Really, super hyped for this. They are giving me exactly what I want, and even beyond what I want, because I never expected Jim Lee getting a full time monthly.

I've never been a big Martian Manhunter fan, but have always been a huge Cyborg fan. So I'm very happy with this change. It's a big improvement to the team in my book.

And Element Woman and Mystery Woman are kind of blank slates for now.
Oh, I started buying JLA during the Satellite Era way, waaaay back in the early Seventies. This really does echo that line-up in many ways and I'm super-stoked about that. Of course, I wish Hawkgirl and Black Canary were there. And it would've been nice to see Vixen and Black Lightning return. But honestly, I'm not complaining. I'm very happy to see so many of my favorites--Green Arrow, Hawkman, The Atom, Firestorm, Mera--all on the team. It's a powerful lineup and looks like a lot of fun!

The artwork: I'm really enjoying the two pieces I've seen so far. Some fans have picked them to pieces, but I'm really impressed by Jim Lee's latest efforts. The pic that was leaked yesterday was particularly impressive, and really solidified that "new Big 7" feel.
OH YEAH. Jim Lee is going to kick so much @$$ on this book! The new piece (which I re-posted in a previous post here) is indeed beautiful. This is going to be a gorgeous book.

The costumes: Wow. So much vile for the new/updated uniforms, but I'm so impressed by them. Superman rightfully looks like a powerhouse with his armour-type outfit (that still looks streamlined), as opposed to lycra, red undies and a spit-curl. I can't say I love Cyborg's look, but the 2nd promo piece clarifies the changes made to him: he's going to be the League's Iron Man. That design has so many elements of Iron Man's armor in it that you'd have to be blind not to see it.

I'm very pleased that Cyborg is getting such a major push by Geoff and DC. But the new pic pretty much makes him look like Iron Man. So, it'll be interesting to see what they do and how they do it in terms of making Cyborg truly A list.

Oh, and I *love* Superman and Wonder Woman's new costumes!

All I know is that I am happy the Atom will be in the final line up. So much so that I'll even put up with having Mera and Aquaman on the team. I'm not thrilled with Superman's outfit, but I can deal with it. I have really come to like Wonder Woman's outfit.

Thanks! Really glad you made this thread. I'm with you on this. Very excited about this book!

You're welcome! Great to see some positives being vocalised around here.....

Interesting about Cyborg being the "Iron Man" of the team. I mean, every team needs a tech guy, but visually, yes, there are some similarities. Maybe if they didn't include a large, bright circle on his chest, it would be less noticeable, but so long as he isn't walking around in a tux, drinking wine, while his new assistant Salty Saucers runs after him.......... I won't worry too much about him being an Iron Man rip-off :)

I also feel he is less redundant than J'onn on the league. Don't get me wrong - I'm a big Martian Manhunter fan, but the Justice League already has superheroes with eye lasers & super-strength (Superman), detective skills & the ability to disguise (Batman), interplanetary experience (GL), etc. Cyborg can offer up-to-date technological know-how, and advanced weaponry. As much as I like J'onn, I'm interested to see what this new addition brings.

I think the new Justice League looks awesome! I for one am really liking all the new costumes. I didn't like Wonder Woman's at first, but it is starting to grow on me. I wish she had the outfit from the JL/JLU cartoon though. Superman looks BA, Green Lantern and Flash look pretty much the same but with little tweaks to make em better IMO, and the new Cyborg design looks really nice. I am loving the almost full robot look. Way cool!

Not excited about Aquaman on the team, though....I can handle having Mera on there for some reason, but I have just never been an Aquaman fan at all. I think Green Arrow will be a nice addition, as well as The Atom.

I think it will be good, i mean Geoff and Jim are an interesting combination and i think that since they are both very popular creators that this has the potential to bring in some new or lapsed readers.

the only downside is that Jim is not always punctual and has a tendency to leave books without the stories being finished.

Another downside is Jim's artwork is not as fashionable as it once was and this could end up looking very dated.

I'm also hoping this brings back the Justice League to the forefront of DC again.

Looking forward to it. So there are some tweaks here in and there in costume but I still see the JL. If Superman had to lose his underwear, imo this alteration is fine. He's got the iconic elements ;you see Superman...the cape, S and blue tights. Most heroes have lost their underpants on the outside by now anyway. There are so many varied looks for X-Men for example and they are still the X-Men.

I wish or hope WW's pants are dark blue and not black. It would be nice to see her retain at least two of her iconic colors than just having one: red.

The line up is the line up I always wanted to see. I will miss J'onn but Cyborg is fine by me. Fact, he's been in media as much as J'onn these days from Teen Titans, to Smallville to the DC Online game.

So yes I am interested too.

I'm feeling pretty positive about JL. But first let me briefly state the negatives: Aquaman bores me, I hate Wonder Woman's top/shirt, and that's the worst Superman costume I've ever seen that I can recall.

But now onto the positives.

Its great to have Cyborg on the team. I prefer a sleek look but I think the armored look is nice and makes more sense, especially if he has to take much punishment in battle.

I think (as others have mentioned) that having GA and Hawkman on the team will be fun. Tho I think GL and Hawkman may shout GA down a bit much. ;)

Mera is pretty cool. In fact, other than Aquaman himself, I like most of the current and recent Aqua types.

Deadman is a pretty neat choice. I wonder if he will get to be a foil for someone on the team like the Atom or Cyborg or someone of a more technological bent.

I have no idea who Element Woman is, so for me that's great. Its nice to have a bit of the unknown. I hope she isn't a total Element Girl / Metamorpho related elementalist since that wacky 4 way split costume always freaked me out, and typically the metamorpho family types had depressing lives. I personally am hoping she is more of a mystic. Would rock if she was an Eastern Philosophy Elementalist so that she got to control metal and wood. Anyway, new is good.

And for Mystery Woman, hey mystery is good too.

Bring it!

Generally I see the new JLA positive. I even like the new costumes. I mean, heck the old Superman costume was from the 1930ies! I like it's new style.

A few minor comments however:

- I will miss the Martian Manhunter in the JLA; he sort of was the soul of it, the good spirit.

- I hope they keep these seven as the main chars of the JLA in the future and no constant total swapping of main JLA chars.

- Also, I hope they have a changing roster of "secondary" chars, guest members to chime and and exchange over time while the main guys stay the same.

- I REALLY hope the JLA jumps into the present fast. Tbh, these costumes look cool for 21st century, but I have a difficulty to imagine them in some retold past "how they all came together long ago" with these costumes.

But yes, I am glad the old JLA is over. It was such mess. These seven chars are who NEED to be the core of the JLA. Period.

I totally agree about keeping the new "Big 7". Too often in team comics, and usually in JLA, they start off with a great line-up and then feel the need to change it ASAP. I understand they're adding 7-8 new members in the second story-arc, but so long as that new Big 7 are locked in, I'll stick with it.

As for their past costumes, the origin will take place only 5 years in the past. So they're costumes should still match up to their present-day outfits.

Just saw another positive that I thought I might share:

Justice League will be the only new DC comic that will be available in the print/digital combo - for every issue!!

I assumed the combo was for #1 only, but apparently it'll be for every issue of Justice League ($4.99 combo), according to Dan Didio's retailer's e-mail.

I'm quite excited about this. Johns JSA was a good read for the most part and he showed he could bring something different but still solid to the League with his Crisis of Conscience storyline.

The art looks really good, and although I'm a little iffy on the Superman costume, I think the Wonder Woman costume is a nice update. (I have to agree that I hope her pants are dark blue rather than black but that's a minor thing.)

As far as the team members, I think they made some good choices; strong echoes of the satellite league. While I'll miss J'onn, this is a good time to bring Cyborg more front and center. Mera instead of Hawkwoman allows for a married couple but with a little more differentiation as to what they can do. I've never really seen much point to the Atom but I know there are others who will love to have him there, so no qualms. Firestorm's always fun and seems to need to be in the league to keep him viable. A couple of new/mystery characters can be good (as long as it's only a couple), no problems there. The only one who seems a little off to me is Deadman, I'd think someone like Black Lightning would fit in better, or if they wanted an occasional mystical character the Phantom Stranger. One or two iffy character choices out of 15... I think I'll take that.

Count me among those that hopes they have a mostly stable membership. The League should be the elite heroes of the DCU, not a team with a constantly changing roster that eventually lets everyone in.

All in all, I'm really looking forward to this. It should be good.

Definitely not fond of it at first glance, but Geoff Johns and Jim Lee have done no wrong in my eyes (in their respective areas), so bring it on!

I have to respectfully disagree about some of the villain choices. if you take these villains out of the hunt whos left? these characters are to the league what the Joker is to batman. and there is the little kid inside me that marks out for any version of the legion of doom from challenge of the superfriends. But Honestly as far as the entire league going up against the scarecrow...uhh maybe if there was an awesome fear toxin and they end up messing each other up but on his own it might as well be the signal man.one and done chop chop bam and a left right left and then its over with. these villains you mention are best used one on one or in a gang type scenario. But im for reals looking forward to the new leagues and i can honestly say that these will be the books I am picking up. I have supported the league through out its history and Superfriends is what started it all for me.

Thanks! Really glad you made this thread. I'm with you on this. Very excited about this book!

Agreed. I was pumped from the first image, but the second image is just boss. Aquaman looks so regal and cool, I love Superman and Wonderwoman's new look. I find it ironic that I hate Superman's costume as depicted by Perez but LOVE it here by Lee.

I've never been a big Martian Manhunter fan, but have always been a huge Cyborg fan. So I'm very happy with this change. It's a big improvement to the team in my book.

So glad Vic is getting a push. I find myself a little put off that over the years he's been depicted as more and more machine, with now just a bit of his face remaining and the rest metal, but I'm interested in how he'll be depicted.

Agreed! Atom and Mera alone are great additions imo.

OH YEAH. Jim Lee is going to kick so much @$$ on this book! The new piece (which I re-posted in a previous post here) is indeed beautiful. This is going to be a gorgeous book.

I just hope he's got like a dozen issues in the can come launch time lol.

So, it'll be interesting to see what they do and how they do it in terms of making Cyborg truly A list.[/QUOTE]

Oh, and I *love* Superman and Wonder Woman's new costumes!

100% agree.

Can't wait to see this book. And frankly, I'd love to see Despero, Circe, Ocean Master (!) and yes, Eclipso all get the Johns/Lee treatment. Woo-Hoo!!

I just want a Johns/Lee style Injustice Society!

Yeah, Cyborg is definitely Iron Man. I mean, the circular light dead center in a full suit of armor? Come on, it's like a silver version of Iron Man's armor! But hey, if they wanna try to make Cyborg into a character as big as Iron Man, I am not complaining, LOL!

I think they're revamping Hawkman to make his mythos revolve around him for now; Shiera will come back eventually. Thus, Geoff has shifted the married couple spotlight to Aquaman and Mera which I love. We all know there will be more DC crossovers in the future. After multiple GL events and now a Flash event (plus all the stories centered on Supes, Bats and WW over decades), we are long overdue for a true widescreen IMAX/THX-esque Aquaman epic.

And I hope Aquaman gets to be the leader of the Justice League, too.

EDIT: Oh, and lest I forget--we need the Injustice Gang or Injustice League by Johns & Lee A.S.A.P.

Not a bad idea. Hopefully the roster will include Lex Luthor, the Joker, the Cheetah, Black Manta, Sinestro, Captain Cold.

Who could be Cyborg's nemesis? Maybe Gizmo?

Plus some other villains, for example, Dr. Light and Solomon Grundy.

Gizmo versus Cyborg. Just like in the Teen Titans cartoon. My God, that's inspired. Good call!

And yeah, it's gotta be Black Manta for Aquaman. No doubt about it.

Does anyone care that it's no longer the Justice League of America, and simply the Justice League?

Nope. Only us geeks refer to it as JLA. Everybody else just knows 'em as the Justice League.

I'll admit to a bit of trepidation of having both Mera and Aquaman on the team - when's the last time any team had two water-based heroes on the roster? - but I enjoyed Johns' use of Mera in Blackest Night, so I am looking forward to seeing her here. I was originally hoping it might be just her and no Arthur, but I'm cool with them both being there. Should offer quite a different dynamic than when Ralph and Sue Dibny were on the team.

I'm also in favour of Cyborg replacing J'onn, simply for more variety in the members' powers and abilities.

Element Woman? And unknown quantity. Bring it on!

A roster similar to the classic satellite era I grew up reading? Hell yes!

As for the costumes, I like WW's new look, I'm still iffy on Superman's "armored" look (Lee's version looks good, but Perez's version looks too much like a suit of armor that anyone could wear and "be" Superman, but I am optimistic), and I prefer Cyborg's current Flashpoint look.

Other than that, I am hopeful about this title. It looks like it has all the elements to be what the JLA should be: The best and brightest in the DCU.

It could be a good chance to raise Gizmo's profile a little bit.

I mean comic wise Brother Blood was more of a team rogue same with Deathstroke. But they have been pushing Deathstroke as more of a Dick Grayson rogue of late.

And brother Blood was basically Cyborg's main Rogue in the cartoon

Love the Justice League.Looking forward to the new team.

The only time i have ever got back issues for a series was the volume Grant Morrison started.First issue i picked up was 87 and i eventually got all the issues.

I'm a fan of both Green Arrow & Hawkman....so I'm looking forward to the clashes as well....I'd actually love to see those two in a team-up series or mini-series. It could be awesome!

I'm with you and the creator of this thread....Cyborg is not a character I've followed, but I'm fine with him "replacing" Martian Manhunter.

I'm an Aquaman fan as well....actually a fan of most of the B-Heroes....but not an Atom fan. Though he does offer his unique talents, so sooner or later they'll be needed and come in handy.

I've been wondering for years why they didn't just drop the "America"....tradition, patriotism, or possibly because JLA just looks "cooler" than JL?
