View Full Version : Resident Evil 4 Thread
According to every videogame magazine, Resident Evil 4 is not only better then sex, but better then your best sexual fantasy times elvenity hundred.
So Good, is Resident Evil 4, that it has even made game critics forget they hate all non first party nintendo games that aren't Viewtiful Joe.
However, as i learned when every magazine said Halo was the second coming of Christ, and i played it, and it was a FPS with a car, i now heartily distrust all games that reciever massive amounts of sucking off.
So, i'm sure some of you will be buying it, so talk about it here, and let me know if the game is really that good.
My brother is buying it anyway, due to, and i quote "Gamespot gave it almost a perfect score, it has to be good!"
If the game is not great, then it will be further proof that game companies are paying off the magazines to write favorable reviews.

I'm picking my copy up after work. I'm very excited, I even took tomorrow off from work so I could have an extended weekend (I work Sat-Wed) to play it.
If the rest of the game is anything like the playable demo I got when I preordered then all the reviews I read about it this weekend are correcty, it's a very intense game that will increase your pulse during parts of it.
I can't wait until I punchout.

I played the demo at gamestop, and even that proved to me that everything said about this game is true. This game is sweet. Its sweeter then sweet, its probably the funnest game I've played since OoT, maybe even Mario 64. High praise, I know, but wow. I'm definitely picking this game up as soon as I can*.

As someone who wasn't too wowed by previous entries in the Bio-Hazzard series, I can safely say that Resident Evil 4 is amazing. Just the fact that the camera isn't fixed is a grand improvement, and the game keeps things very fast paced. I never played Nemesis, but this game certainly eclipses Resident Evil 1, 2, and RE-make.

Is it as "lack of ammo and health-ish" as the other RE games?
'Cause I heard it's more actiony. Like somewhere between RE and Devil May Cry.

I only ever rented RE3 so I don't know but so far the lack of ammo and health hasn't been a real problem for me. You can keep quite a few weapons so I don't think it's that bad. And in addition to traditional colored herbs you can also pick up chicken eggs to restore health. And if you're in the farm area you can find those easily.
Lots of action so far.

I just got finished killing the bearded guy in the trenchcoat, truely an awesome boss fight.
This is hands down, the best Resident Evil, and easily the best game on Game Cube. I've never really played anything like this, but it seems like truely great things can happen when you design a game with a specific console in mind. The rumored ps2 version won't look half as good as this game does.
Makes me glad I bought all three consoles.

The PS2 version isn't a rumor, its a fact. Its set for near the end of 2005. But you are correct that it won't look as good. I'm having doubts it will play as good too. This game was build from the ground up for the GC, and ports of games like that never translate well. Just look at Splinter Cell.

I played this game last night in the store, in thier demo thingy.
It sucked.
I'm going to be a heretic and say that just like the derivative travesty that was Gaylo and Gaylo 2, this game is also full of suckness. The only thing impressive is the graphics. Great. Lots of games have cool graphics and moody atmosphere.
But the controls are still the same crappy steer-like-a-car controls that have always plagued Resident evil. You also can't control the camera, so you're always stuck looking over Leon's shoulder.
If they wanted to make a third-person shooter, they should have just made it a third-person shooter. But no, they had to make it a Third-Person Crapper. Great.
The guys at Capcom should sit down and watch some gameplay footage from, say, Freedom Fighters, Devil May Cry, and Otogi: Myth of Demons, and Zone of the Enders. *Then* try to make a game about killing zombies/psychos/demons/whatever-they-are-now.

Well, thats your opinion, and thats fine. One thing to remember though is that RE4 is *still* a survival horror first, an action game second. So their intention wasn't to make another Devil May Cry, which originally started out as RE4.

My take on game:
They did a good job. They updated the enemies (Which really needed to be done.) Control/camer ais not that bad, if you get used to it.
Also enemies drop stuff you need. Just got to make sure you can get to where they died. Money system does not hurt either.
Record; I like merchant guy. Funny new addition.
Though the main cast could have been done better. With plot and such. Though its a RE game.
Meant to be a lacking B Movie in that aspect.
Best visual game I have seen yet.
But I am not buying a Game Cube for this. I rather stick with Snake Eater.

Yes, but they have eliminated the need for the ink ribbon so saving is automatic at the typewriter.
I finally made it to disk two last night, took me about 16 hours (game clock time, not real life time, much more there) to make it to the second disk. This game is crazy. I can't tell you how many times I've had to pause it just to breathe because the intensity had my heart pounding. Plus, for three days now I have went to bed with serious hand cramps.

Just for kicks lets look deeper at the titles you mentioned:
Freedom Fighters: This is the closest to bearing any kind of relation to the kind of gameplay a RE game should have, and its a squad based game at its core so really it doesn't
Devil May Cry: Do I even have to comment on this? Two COMPLELEY different kinds of games, a DMC themed control system would be A) Out of place in the RE universe, B) Out of place in most universes except DMC and C) wouldn't make a dime of scence
Otogi: Myth of Demons: Haven't played it so can't comment
Zone of the Enders: This is even a better chuckle than DMC, ZONE OF THE FRIGGIN ENDERS? Mech based shooter that operates at lighting speed and is in essence a very arcade style of gameplay...no further comment.
The problem it seems is that you went into the game specifically looking for something wrong, and in the end criticized it for not being a different game.
I just bought it today and so far I'm loving it. Combat rocks, finally its easy to switch to the knife and melee in hetic fights. Good ammo conservation startegy I've found is to
A) Shoot em in the head
B) Kick the stuffing out of them
C) Knife em to death while they're on the ground.

I got the Gamestop special Ed., the game is pretty sweet but I think Capcom made a mistake with how they designed the game. I am one of the group of people who can not play 1st person shooters without getting violently sick. Hence I have never had the pleasure of enjoying Halo, Doom, Counterstrike, etc. I guess it is the way the camera angle is when Leon is moving making it look like he is bouncing up and down but the game gets me sick after just a short time of play. Maybe it is just me but if not, this game is going to lose a pretty big audience of fans who liked the originals. "Hopefully" Capcom will adjust this when they make the PS2 version to make the characters wobble less when they move around the environments. Anyone else experience this sensation?

Leon has a knife that you can instantly shift to by pressing the Left shoulder button without going to the menu and regardless of what you have equiped(it doesn't take up inventory space either). Its decent in a pinch but I found it best for finishing an enemy on the ground off and saving ammo.

Here is a ammo saving tip recomended for Day Light moments: Shoot them once or twice in head, then kick.
The villager's head usualy explodes.
But at night, it is best to go for knees, and body shoots. (Because exploding head, could led to Parasite popin gout and tkaing over. Should that happen, either accurate head shot, or flash grenade. Flash Grenade if Ngiht of Living Villagers, Luis makes nothing but head shots.)
Also no a bridge, shoot vilalge ron oppsoite end facing bridge edge. They fall off bridge/narrow space and die. Also shooting a leaping enemey.. They fall and gravity kills them.
Also: The Dogs at Church, they got low visiblity. First one you can cap with rifle. Other two get them two for one deal, with shotgun/boom stick.
Hiromi
01-18-2005, 06:39 PM
I was actually able to get 2 of the dogs trapped against the hole in the bridge, then proceeded to knife both of them, yep that right, did not waste a single bullet for either of them :> Third one I did shoot. And those squid head poppers are getting real irritating btw, guess I'll have to try the knee cap trick.

Yeah if one is runnnig to you, and you land a knee cap. They fall flat on their face. And a non worm head, hit in knee actualy stops and clutches the knee in pain. Dropping weapon in process. Pop other on in hold and they fall down.
Another note; If you take time and blast ten diamond sin begining. You get a gun for free. (Hand gun.) But if you upgraded your first hand gun. Do not bother firing new gun. Rather sell it back to Gun keep (He pays a LOT for it.)
Also if you find items with hoel sin them. Put jewlery in all three holes. Worth a small fortune.
(At beginnig in Farm zone. Beer holder, the cats eye in chapter1-1 add to it. Make sit worth money.)
That was my trick. Made money, got my main gun jacked up in attack power.
More attakc power= less bullets needed.

Yeah, I caught on with the beerstein.
I'm through chapter 3-1 and I've been PAINSTAKINGLY going over what's a better investment, to tune up your weapon or buy a new one considering the cost of each. My method right now is to buy as powerful of a handgun as possible since there is the most ammo available for it (not the revolver, the reload time scares me) and tune-up the other weapons. Has anyone bought the mine-shooter? I have not, what's it all about?
The part in Ch. 3-1 where you have to let Ashley climb to the second level to turn the crank while you pick of zombies with your rifle is pretty intense!

I'm on Chapter 5-4. I'm closing in on the end of the game.
SPOILERS
SPOILERS
The Fight with Krauser is AWESOME. And the Fight with "IT" is intense. Almost as freaky as Salazar's Right Hand.
Anyways:
RE:My method right now is to buy as powerful of a handgun as possible since there is the most ammo available for it
I never bought an extra pistol. I merely upgraded the standard handgun to 2.0 damage, decreased the reload time once, and upgraded the magazine to 16 shots.
RE:(not the revolver, the reload time scares me)
Not a smart move IMO. The Revolver is a great weapon and does massive damage. Mainly you want it so that you'll collect Magnum ammo along the way, and later in the game you'll be able to buy Killer 7. Killer 7 is a Magnum that starts out with 25 damage, holds 7 rounds, and reloads as quickly as the handgun.
RE: Has anyone bought the mine-shooter? I have not, what's it all about?
It shoots a small mine that tags on to the enemy target and starts to beep. It's a time mine that will beep faster until it detonates, taking out the target and anyone near the blast radius. Shooting the mine with another weapon will also detonate it immediately. You can use a scope to shoot enemies long range, or shoot a wall or floor to set a trap for an approaching enemy. upgrades to the weapon allow you to increase the blast radius of a mine. The damage is about as effective as a grenade, only you have more control over it. It's a great weapon in my opinion, and while you won't have a lot of ammo for it, simply keeping 5 mines to use when you're in a pickle and want to conserve ammo will do. It also saved my ass when I fought "IT." I shot that thing with a Rocket Launcher near-point blank (actually damaged myself a little), and the thing didn't die! Mine shooter saved my ass after that point. Of course I found the explosive barrels after that...
You also might want to get a Mine Shooter and Revolver for when you fight Salazar's right hand. I'll tell you now, it's like fighting an Alien (from the movie 'Aliens") that's been fused with Superman. I got fed up with it and had to resort to Rocket Launcher, but if you don't want to do that, better get the Mine Shooter.
Punchy

So you're suggestion is to buy the revolver and the mine-shooter.
*whew*
I need to find some money then. I've upgraded the hell out of my shotgun and bought the Blackbird handgun, at least I think that's the name of it. We'll see how that works. So I'll just save money and work on getting the revolver and the mine-shooter.

I personaly do not recomend the Mine Shooter. it fire slike a dart, and hits enemyed charge fo rit to blow up.
Think the Grenad elauncher but a time limit, and they try getting up to your face prior to explosion. So you get hurt too. I found it too slow on denotating itself.
I stuck with a upgraded Red9. (Upgrade it enough, it hurts like a amgnum.)
But yeah agianist Salzaar Rocket Launcher method is best. As it has a instant death move.
And the best weapon agianist Krauser was the Killer7. (Pop him in knee caps with hand gun, then Killer7 him in the head)
About it: It is invincible when your on the rail storage boxes. So use shotgun (Striker prefered0 To scare it off as you find buttons. When out of there, rocket launcher It. (Almost dead) Then shot it once.
As for Cahpter 5-5: Well you guys will figure it out. If not I am willing ot hlep. (I bet Robo Tehc Master can figure it out.) But the game, is not over afte rthe last fight.. Trust me. (It involes driving.)

Its just a minigame with no real bearing on the game itself. You can win a lot of money, but thats about it.

The Mercs levels are very difficult when you start off. The main thing to do is give each one a run through and memorize the location of the items, time extensions, and time bonuses. You'll want to make sure you use the time bonuses and kill combos to your advantage to pack up the points. You need to score 60,000 to get a five star rating for whatever level you're working on. A four star rating (30,000 points) will unlock and new character to play in the mini game.
To unlock the handcannon in the main game, you'll have to get a five star rating on all for levels WITH ALL FIVE CHARACTERS! This might sound daunting but once you learn the tricks of each level and the strengths of each character, it soon becomes a breeze. I am currently three levels away from unlocking the handcannon (three worlds left to get five star ratings on with one of the characters).
Also, beware of double-bladed chainsaw man on the water world. He's zanny.

Anyone else have this problem? I tried the method of just pummeling them with shotgun blasts but it is useless. Can you kill them by just shooting them?

Are you talking about the blind monsters with the Wolverine claws? If so then whenever you face them there should be a bell around, if so shoot the bell to ring it and he'll charge it and get stuck in the wall with his claws at which time you blast away at the parasite.
If there's no bell or if they're all destroyed then you can bait him by running, he here's your footsteps and will attack and eventually lodge himself into the wall with his claws where you can see the parasite. He won't find you if you simpy walk.
If that's not who you're talking about, sorry.

Have no fear, I have a solution or three to ease your Iron Madien woes.
1. After getting the parasite on the front, pepper them with a few blasts from your Broken Butterfly or Killer 7. That will make 'me explode.
2. Chuck a few grenades at them.
3. This is the tricky one. Shotgun blast them in the legs from a distance. This will make them fall on their face. Quickly equip the rifle and zoom onto the one on their back. You have to be fast because these things then zoom across the floor on their stomachs and spike you from the ground.
Hope that helps.

I don't think you need the magnum blasts or the grenades. Getting all of the parasites on their frontside then shooting their legs out with the shotgun and getting the parasite on their back is enough.
And when you fight the first one you don't have to waste shotgun ammo, jump over the window ledge into the second room of the research lab. He'll do the same and will expose his back for a few seconds.

Just a word advice for those of you like me who use hintbooks as a crutch, save your money and don't buy the RE4 one because it sucks! Seriously, there is all kinds of bad and wrong info in it and I have not idea how Capcom isn't embarassed endorsing it. I have gotten more valuable info from the folks here than the stupid book. The guys who made it probably only played it through once and just hacked out something to sell. I don't get it? If it wasn't for you guys I'd be wasting the next 10 years of my life trying to kill the Iron Maidens and one of my buddies told me trick with the giant orc- looking monsters that you can just sniper the parasite on the back rather than running up their backs a hundred times trying to hack it off. *spoiler* The book also tells you what to do with the priest and the mini-gun if he escapes your sniper rifle, which is basically waste ALL your ammo and grenades trying to kill him. Well he got away from me and all I did was hide behind one of the 2nd floor doors and gun him down with the sniper rifle. They also to sell all your weapons at the end but if you do that then you won't have them when you play over right? Anyone know where I can write to Capcom and complain?

For real. The Punisher is nice because you can get it for free, then sell it back for good deal of bucks.
I heard great things abotu Black Tail, but a full custoemd Red9 Can kill a villager in 1 to two hitts, and cna kill El Gigante, in like 20 or less shots. (I did it, so yeah I know.)
Edit: The Striker if fully customed is sweet too, it cna hold a 100 shots!
And a fully upgraded *normal* rifle can kill enemies in a straight line. Like Super Magnum from RE2.
About Target Pratice; It is a mini game, the prizes well you get RE4 Minis. (You heard me, collectorsof chars in game, that talk, have no game function otherwise.)
Final Note; Also you can switch costumes. Leon will be in his Racoon PD uniform from RE2, but updated graphics, Ada will be in her Assignment Ada garb, and Ashley looks like a pop star wannabe.

Why thank you.
The Matilda is unlocked at the end of the game. It's a 9mm with a 3 round burst capability.
The Handcannon is a 50mm magnum. It's great against everything except the flying bugs.
You unlock it by gettting a five star rating on all four levels of the Mercs Mini game with all five characters. (have to have each of the five characters pass each of the four levels with five star ratings on all of them). That was a feat in itself.
I also finished Assignment Ada. Finishing that will unlock the Chicago Typerwriter (Thompson summachine gun).
I don't care for either the Matilda or the Chicago Typewriter, though the second one is pretty cool. Since they're rapids fire weapons they tend to lower your hit ratio percentage.
The only thing I haven't done is finished the game on Professional and passed all the target practice to get the bottle caps (I only have Ada on that thing and don't even know how I got that).

Yeah. Just look at the description of each treasure. If it says "looks like it was once set in something" or "looks like some jewels were once set in it" then keep it and combine it with other treasures to get more money for it.

80 deaths seems about normal. I don't ever remember ever dying that much in a game in recent memory. Although, I did find Saddler a little too easy. I didn't even die when I got to him. Although I guess it helps to pack a Killer7 and a Mine Launcher with all kinds of ammo at my disposal.

Just go the other way, the villagers are easier to handle.
I've been revisiting RE4 playing it through the second time. A lot nicer when you have all of the guns maxed out and plenty of ammo. I don't know if I'll actually try really hard to beat it again, it's just a nice break from Madden (which I'm trying to get good at).

It depends on youor timing, too soon and yeah he is dizzy, too late and it drops from behind him.
But if you dizzy him, can just run by his dizzy self, to well destroy chaisn to door and run to get the old key.

I think you're talking about the "wolverine" guy, rite? Retractable claws & all. You have to shoot him in the back, the parasite thing that's sticking out of his back(shoot that). If you only have a handgun, you'll need to hit him like 12-15 times. Less with a shotgun, etc. Later you get 3 of em at once. ;)

ghostrider is right.
Also, he's blind so the only way he knows you're around is if you run. If you just walk, he won't charge you. You can also ring either of the bells that are around by shooting them. He'll charge after it and get his claws stuck in the wall, then the parasite will be exposed.

You've made a good point about the RE continuity (or lac thereof). I a very big fan of the RE games & universe, & think they screwed up some in this. RE Code Veronica X brought an end to Umbrella, the STARS came to an end with the destruction of Racoon City, ik there. But, here in RE4 Wesker is back, trying to get Umbrella back to power. It was already said that he had left Umbrella & was working for 1 of their competitors, plus he had all those kick ass powers (Like Krauser has in RE4). Then there's ADA WOng, who's character file at the end of RE Veronica said that she was starting a new life, and the fact that she helped Leon out at the end of RE2, now shes backl working for Wesker again? Earlier there was a rocket launcher you could have picked up for free. If not, buy one. I just tipped one of the canisters of liquid nitrogen to freeze him, then shoot one of those puppies up his ass. If you don't have one, or can't afford one, um... good luck? Yeah, there's a great short-cut. Walk all the way to the right and stand at the edge of the platform. He won't be able to hit you at all. Just wait for Salizar to pop out and look for you and drill him with shotgun blasts. He'll die and you won't have lost a bit of energy.

What Punchy said. 1st blast the tentacle that will be rite in front of you to get it to go back into the wall. Use something like a shotgun for that. Then when he pops out of the plant's pod thing hit him with either the magnum or a rifle. Something hi-powered. Its actually pretty easy.
And I think the RE Code Veronica X story was supposed to tie up the story & let you know what happened to all the characters, but, RE4 isnt in continuity with alot of it.

Sir Spencer has been dead. RE1 Remake evne lets you find his jounarl, to see what hpapene dto him.
As for Ant i Umbrella COpration: Apparently Wesker is the man behind it, and is trying to now be the founder of Umbrella. (So a merge. Like Square Enix. Or something like that.)
THough what I mainly found out is this: In RE4, it hsows nature is just as twisted as Science is (The Plagras were made by nature, some jurasic park treatment revived them.)
And Wesker's lackeys (Include Ada) Are around world.. Collecting a smany funky genetic amterial as possible. And as Krauser shows, willnig to use it on themselves.
As for Ada: She is mainly donig her job. She just uses Leon to get, what she wants. While helping him in surviving. (And keeps him alive, just so can use him again, and again.)
Edit: And I personaly think Saddler was a Umbrella EMploye. Peeve dthat AMerica took hsi job with Umbrella's collaspe. So he went nuderground. Makes sense to the final part in game. (The lab/base.) After all, Luis was trying to do a Wesker. (Cop/Researcher job, and a infromant of Ada.)
The biggest plot hole: The cult.
How cna people in old Dark Ages, had a use for the Plagras fossils? Because soemthing buried to the Earth, could not be a fossil if the plagras were alive back then.

no the anti umbrella group was trying to stop umbrella not steal from them.the group wesker was working for was SUPPOSED to be a corperate rival.
THough what I mainly found out is this: In RE4, it hsows nature is just as twisted as Science is (The Plagras were made by nature, some jurasic park treatment revived them.)its still seems more supernatural-ish to me instead of sci-fi.especially sense these parasites weren't geneticly altered by the los illuminados.though i heard it was the base for meany of umbrellas projects, like the proginator virus.or something to that effect.
And Wesker's lackeys (Include Ada) Are around world.. Collecting a smany funky genetic amterial as possible. And as Krauser shows, willnig to use it on themselves.as of code veronica people pretty much assumed this was what he was doing.

Smart. They are only their for money reasons, and could use the bars to cut off their routes. (Though apparently can turn the switches to let themselves escape.)
When I was there, killed one of them, and led other to starting point.. Shielded him off, got Ashley out of hiding spot, and hauled ass as I made sur eto close the doors behind me.
I am glad the Iron maidens are rarer than Regenarators. Sure they were not that tough, but still wastes ammo in killing them. (Last enemy of the naked enemy class is a Regen.. Don't get cocky, because it has as many Plagra as a Iron Maiden does.)

Yep, infinite rocket launcher is a million, along with the Chicago Typewriter, which you'll unlock finishing Assingment Ada.

Don't waste your money on the Broken Butterfly. It's one of the treasure in the castle. You'll need to back track once you've gotten Ashley back becuase you have to piggyback her through a window to unlock a door. So, save your money for your other weapons.

Yeah so there I was feeling all cocky and badass with my tweaked out violent toys heading into disk 2 and then I met *creepy music* the Regenerators. God's sake, good friggin thing I got that infrared scope, my goddamn shotgun and magnum are out of ammo!
and that was just after 2 of the damn things! I iced a third with some incendiaries and a flashbang but kee-ripes, these last 2 acts are gonna be rough aren't they?

ehhh, the Regenerators are the biggest problem in my opinion. Sure there are some hard parts after that (including a pretty tough boss fight before the final boss), but those Regenerators are just annoying.
Oh and you can sell back the infrared scope when you're done with it.

I'm not selling that thing until I find out for sure there arne't gonna be any more of 'em. Oh yeah I heard you can sell things and buy them back at the same price, but all the same I wouldn't want to fumble up and wind up short on cash when I need it.
If I ever meet a group I'm gonna throw down a flashbang right away and pray none of 'em get near me.
If they aren't making the next online Outbreak title like this one my question is a resounding "dear god why?" that would be awesome. I'd especially like it if you could grab some of the weapons off dead people, like JJ's chaingun or a nice axe.

well I completed the first go-round last night. Krauser was the best thing I've seen in the series so far, 2 very excellent fight experiences, the second encounter with the obstacles and ambushes and stuff was amazing.
Saddler was kind of a pushover though...

I can say with no ego, that this game is the greatest thing to hit the gamecube (or any "this" gen console for that matter) since....well, just "since".
Of course Half Life 2 and Rome Total War give it a run for it's money ;)

Just finished my 3rd round, with the Chicago typewriter (thompson machinegun). Too easy, but fun!
I just figured that there's a "professional" mode to the game. Time to start again. :)

Its a good game. Just set aside the time to play it, as you have to do it in one shot.

If I remember correctly, the Chicago typewriter (Thompson machinegun) is unlocked. But, you still have to buy it from the arms dealer. It costs $1,000,000.

The second boss is the first El Gigante. The first boss was El Lago.
