Say you agree with Hitler and might be a Nazi, you think Israel is a pain in the ass, you think your new movie probably sucks, and that you want to make a porno with Kirsten Dunst.

At Cannes. (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/05/18/cannes-film-festival-melancholia-director-lars-von-trier-nazi/)

Apparently Von Trier's just finds press conferences really boring and really annoying and makes random shit up to fuck with the press.

You're saying he doesn't want to do a porno with Kirsten Dunst?

DonC jumps quick:

Yeah, I should have figured someone would beat me to that remark.

Still...me, too! Me, too!

I'd just like to say that I grew up thinking I was English, and I took pleasure in that, and then I found out I was actually an Irish Republican, so, you know, I can take sympathy with the dickheads who blew up my street and nearly killed friends of mine.

But now I'm American, so fuck it.

You can still be American and an Irish Republican, but you'll likely get taken hostage by a terrorist with no face.

Nice article, says it all it seems.

Really? Why would fucking with the press or making shit up have to be boring or annoying? I can't figure that. Is Lars a jerk or something, or incapable?
I liked his "Braking The Waves" 'though. Seems a great movie.

Dude, are you even reading what Ian said. What Ian said was: von Trier thinks thinks press conferences are boring and annoying. Therefore he makes shit up. The implication being, he finds it it amusing to lie to the press.

I believe I did, yes.

Which is why I responded to Ian's good / articulated post by wondering WHY Lars von Trier - even with fucking with the press for the heck of it - would still find press-do's boring or annoying enough, to be dragging nazi's or Israel into it.
Since in my opinion it makes him sound like a jerk or stupid a bit - even considering he'd be just fucking with people.
Like if Lars would wanna be controversial or mindfucking with having a point then I'd say he shouldn't bring up nazis or Israel, since such would only keep points from getting made.

Why does such a post annoy you, Thespianphryne?

And he was banned at Cannes, since they found his comments unacceptable.

So, now we know the standard: it's OK to make actual anti-semitic rants and films (Mel Gibson is there and had no problems), and it's OK to be a rapist of children who ran away from the law (Polanski was a Palm D'or winner and Jury President), but say jokingly you're a Nazi it's wrong. Nice.

So does anyone have any von Trier recommendations?

And.. the one with Nicole Kidman.... it wasn't bad....how was it called?

I've only seen one of his films Dogville".

The short review : depressing as fuck.

the longer review: one of the most depressing and effective critiques of the welfare state ever produced. Kidman consistently argues that the residents of "Dogville"are victims of circumstance and therefore aren't responsible their increasingly horrific treatment of her until finally she decides that murdering the shit out of the entire town is the way to go.

Pretty much anything of his is good, but Breaking the Waves, while not his best at all, it's a good one to start with.

I think Antichrist is fantastic. And Dancer in the Dark, for that matter, despite (or rather because of) Bjork's limited acting.
