Are there any Superman comics out there that woudl be appropriate for my just-starting-to-read-age son? Similar to Marvel's 'Adventures' line that has single issues eventually collected into digests?
Superman Adventures was based on the animated Timm-verse series. I don't know how many collections they did, but there were a couple. And you can probably find the monthy books pretty cheap, too.

Unfortunately, DC hasn't been good about something like that these days unless the character has an animated TV show. Superman has shown up in a couple of Batman: The Brave and Bold issues (based in part on the cartoon). Maybe when the Superman movie actually is closer to being released that may change.
I do believe there may be a lot of Superman picture books or "Early Reader" books available at book stores like Barnes & Noble, though.

There's also the Super Friends title, which is a kid friendly series that's not overtly violent and very age appropriate. I think it was canceled, but you should be able to find back issues of it aplenty. There's also the Tiny Titans series which has Superboy in it and is a whole lot of fun. There was also the Legion Of Superheroes comic based on the animated series, which starred Superman and is kid friendly.

Yeah, Millar was one of the writers. I guess his is the stuff they collected the most.

I've also seen ads in the DCKids books for a series called "DC Super-Pets", which seem to be about Krypto, Beppo (the Super-Monkey), Streaky (the Super Cat), Ace (the Bat-Hound), an animal GL (possibly Ch'p?), a Wonder Woman-related kangaroo, and who knows what else. The ad says they're "available from book retailers", and list a website of http://www.capstonekids.com.

Give him Cosmic Adventures. These things shouldn't be gender specific. Best getting the kid used to amazing girls. He's going to meet a lot of them in life ;)

In addition to Superman Adventures, the Super Pets, Super Friends, Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade and the young readers books, there was also Adventures in the DCU, Justice Leage Unlimited, a book based on the Legion of Super Heroes cartoon, a Krypto mini based on that cartoon, he showed up once or twice in Batman Adventures and The Batman and currently occasionally pops up in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, plus the Super Family is in Tiny Titans and Superboy's in Young Justice. Also, I read mainstream Superman books when I was a kid in the late 70s and early 80s, up through the 90s into today, and I turned out...well, I'm sure those books are still fine.
