View Full Version : Reducing My Collection

I have been buying and saving comics for many years and they are over running my room & starting on other parts of the house. Since the market tanked, most comic shops don't want them & I can't sell them on eBay. Most people don't seem interested unless the comics are slabbed which would be cost prohibitive. Does anyone have a suggestion to dispose of a large number of comics, short of taking them to the recycling center?

Look at the top of this very board and you will see a trading thread. I've made some good trades here for old comics, most often for movies.

If you are just looking to get rid of them, if they are reasonably kid-friendly books then your local library or junior high school would be delighted to take them off your hands. Libraries are rapidly discovering that comics are the magic bullet for getting kids reading again; I helped a local library put together a kids' workshop in conjunction with Free Comic Book Day last year.

So you get rid of old stuff you don't want AND you are a Force For Literacy. It's a win/win.

Yeah, but what do I do with that whole bunch of bad 90s X-Men comics?

What was I *thinking?*

I googled some comic buyback places and it seems a few of them will buy the whole collection, including shipping, for a flat fee. I imagine they make money off the twenty or so that can fetch some funds and the rest goes in the five or ten cent bins.

I have also heard their is a ebay-type site just for comics but I lost the link when I swapped computers, so if anyone knows that, I'd appreciate it.

At the moment, my plan is to put up the few comics I think might sell at a decent price (Birds of Prey #8, for example) and sell the rest. Except for the ones that were my favorites as a kid. It's strange but I'm basically ready to sell almost anything I bought past age 18. It's the ones I spent my hard earned fifty cents and dollars on that I want to keep.

got any Wolverine issues? I'm trying to replace all of mine that were damaged in a flood recently. I'd take them off your hands for you....also any X-Men you have.

I just advertise a "comic garage sale" in the paper. .

then set up boxes for $.25 and $.50 each. (I usually go 5/$1 & 3/$1).

Pull out anything you want to keep.. as most folks will just offer you something insane like $10 for a long box. Still.. if your goal is to get rid of some stuff -- ie: make some space. . . .at least you'll get SOME money back after you've had your enjoyment from them (ie: reading)

There's another option for unwanted comics that isn't often exploited: doctors' offices. Everybody wants something to read in a doctor's office, and comics provide reading material that's quick and easy to read, and doesn't date as easily as magazines.

Of course, that's not much of a solution for bad comics, because you probably don't want someone's initial exposure to comics to be a Spider-Clone or Electro-Superman issue.

Also, anything that would be particularly child-friendly would probably go over well in a pediatrician's office.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but with over 30 long & short boxes, it would be very expensive to ship them very far from home. Hell, if someone called me and said they would give me $20 for everything and they would take them away, it would be hard to say no.

On the other hand, I could advertise my Star Wars comics in the paper about the time Episode 3 comes out and they would probably sell.

If you'd sell'em for that little, even if you're kinda exagerrating, I get the impression that you just want them to "go to a nice home" and if you can get something for your trouble, then cool.

With that in-mind, I'd suggest the donation options people mentioned. You may even get tax breaks, as a result, which might be more than what you were expecting to sell them for.

Other than that, you might want to reconsider eBay or other selling options. How you sell them may determine IF you sell them. There are threads around here which give eBay tips. Or, if you'd like to discuss it here, I guess that'd work, too.

You could p.m. me, if you'd prefer, but gimme some warning, first, as I need to clear out some p.m.'s.

Yeah, if you seriously want to unload them, PM me a list, and I'll make you an offer.

(I hope this isn't against the rules. Sorry, Brian; let me know and I'll edit.)

Where abouts do you live? I might have a Jackson with your name on it!

What issues do you have? Perhaps I buy.

While I'm not a moderator, anyone wanting to buy or sell comics might want to start doing that over PMs rather than an open thread. Advice for DoubleWide for getting rid of his collection is great, but once deals are offered/started/made, that's probably getting into prohibited territory.

I'm just saying, is all.

I too may be interested in some of the books. Let me know what you have to get rid of.
