I enjoyed What If...? as a youngster. It filled in some Marvel history when I started reading comics. A lot of times, it pretty much became "What if everyone died", but there was some fun stuff. Especially X-stuff.

Since Professor X was buried under the rubble for years instead of Cain Marko, he wasn't around to form the X-Men. The FF stopped Magneto when he first appeared and the mutant hate started a lot sooner. The mutants all follow Magneto, but after a raid on the U.N. goes bad, Professornaut shows up, busts heads and kicks Magneto out. He then gets rid of all of the super powered competition. Then there's a plot to get rid if him which is good fun.

The originals manage to fight off Krakoa themselves, thus a new team isn't needed. The Phoenix story goes in a wackily different direction since Polaris can bring the shuttle down with her magnetic powers from the safety of the shielded room.

Beast has to form a new team to stop Count Nefaria and his Ani-Men. Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Namorita, Siryn, Thunderbird II and wee little Wolfsbane are the All-New, All-Different X-Men!

I know rampant death is commonplace now, but at the time this came out it was shocking.

I actually like the one where they stayed in Asgard.

This is the only What If..? I read, I enjoyed it. It pretty much told the same Phoenix story except Storm was the Phoenix instead of Jean Grey..

I have two. First #87:

Very creepy and dark, and I was a big Jubilee fan at the time.

And then #6:

I'd only been reading X-Men for a short time, but knew about the Inferno story. Then on holiday, I bought a copy of a Portugese comic that included this issue. I had no idea what the hell was going on or what "What If?" was, all I knew was that suddenly everyone was getting butchered and it was freaking awesome.

After Prof X/Juggernaut...
Wolverine Lord of the Vampires.
I love the Punisher powered with Dr. Strange's cape.

I also like the What If Quicksilver story with Magneto basically as a mob boss and Pietro as the rebellious son who goes out into the world.

Magneto takes over the USA, and Wolverine leads a team of X-Men survivors in this terrible new world. It ends with almost everyone dead, and an X-Men team that has only Wolverine as a recognizable member.

I remember buying this just to trace the cover. I thought What If was ultra tedious.

I only really liked this one:

It's probably the worst comic ever published. I keep it easy to access.

I liked the one Warren Ellis did the dialogue for. I can't remember which...

I wonder if she made sarcastic air quotes with her fingers off panel.

She did. They air quotes were what set Nightcrawler on fire.

I remember when vol. 2 did another "What if Phoenix had lived" story.

http://www.4thletter.net/whatif/coverphoenix1.jpghttp://www.4thletter.net/whatif/coverphoenix2.jpg

The only thing I can remember about it was that Jean/Phoenix-Force smoked after having her powers taken away. Oh, and it killed the real Jean at the bottom of Jamaica Bay and Cyclops forgave it. I guess if any woman (or cosmic entity) just looks like Jean, that's good enough for Cyclops in any reality.

This is making me want to get these old issues out. I don't remember much about them.

Except my favourite, What if... The X-men Had Stayed in Asgard?

Rahne and Hrimhari had kids then, too. Of course, I loved Dani becoming the new Goddess of Death.

My favourite What If's?

This one for obvious reasons.

And this one for the way the ending broke the fourth wall. (They find out that they are actually just comic book characters)

I loved the Inferno one, though the Wolverine eating the baby "fresh from the delivery room" did seem over the top even to my young and twisted mind at the time.

What Ifs are always so sadomasochistic. "Watch how everything would go to hell if we writers weren't guiding the ship!"

I'm really not surprised that's the message you take from the What If stories.

Anyway, my favorite X-related What If? is one that proves that one wrong. It's the What If? that asks the question "What If the New X-Men died on their First Mission?" Basically, all the New X-Men introduced in Giant Size X-Men #5 and the classic team are tragically killed during the Krakatoa incident, leading the Beast and Professor X to start a new team, with the likes of Scarlet Witch, Warpath and Namorita on the team. It actually ends on a pretty positive note, with the new team continuing on in the old one's place.

mmmhmm, I'm not surprised that stands out as your favorite because it's rare that they don't end apocalyptically. It must have been a remarkable issue, friend.

I think that's the first time Siryn was called Banshee, after she finds out about her father.

It's actually also a great Magneto story.

Its amazing how much that Magneto drawing looks exactly like Jim Lees in XMen 2. Artists used to copy Lee constantly in the 90s, it was embarassing.
