View Full Version : Who's missing from a list of top ten Marvel heroes?

If you see a list of the top ten English-language movies, it's probably going to include Citizen Kane, the Godfather and Casablanca. A list of the top ten Rock albums is probably going to include Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club, Pet Sounds, What's Going On?, Revolver , Rubber Soul and either/ or both Blonde on Blonde or/ and Highway 61 Revisited.
A list of the top ten Marvel heroes is probably going to include...
Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
Wolverine
Captain America (Steve Rogers)
Iron Man (Tony Stark)
Daredevil (Matt Murdock)
The Thing
and The Hulk (Bruce Banner)
What three characters are missing?
And is there anyone in the seven I mentioned who doesn't belong?

Spider-Man and Wolverine are the two main character of Marvel, period (I'm surprised there is not one sub-forum to Wolverine) the rest of any list won't come any closer to those two.
Now, I assume when you are saying top ten characters you are talking about the most iconic ones. Those average people know.
But I would say
Iron Man
Hulk
Captain America
Storm
That's 6, they all got various movies, animated and TV series and many spoof
now the fantastic four as a unit are popular but individually no, even if the thing is maybe the more recognizable of them all. Same goes for the X-men
I reckon Charles Xavier, Magneto and Cyclops are on the top 5. Daredevil is only known as "the guy with corns" so no
I'll go with
Dr. Doom
Magneto
Dr. Octopus
Cyclops
What three characters are missing?
Thor, Hank Pym, Beast, Wonder man, ect
And is there anyone who doesn't belong?
Sentry, Red Hulk

Daredevil would be in the top ten IMO because he's a blind Catholic lawyer by day, and vigilante with devil horns at night. And Frank Miller's run on the character includes some of the absolute best solo stories for any Marvel superhero (hell, it includes the best Marvel comic ever (http://www.comicsbulletin.com/reviews/109191133943512.htm).) General comic book fans know him.
I think Thing is definately worth mentioning.

1. Spider-Man
2. the Hulk
3. Captain America
4. Iron Man
5. Thor (how'd you not have Thor?)
6. Daredevil
7. Wolverine
8. Ghost Rider (non-comic friends of mine seem to love this guy)
9. the Punisher (same)
10. Silver Surfer (shows up in pop-culture, Stan's favorite, movie & just seems to be known of)
This would be my top 10 list of biggest name heroes (those known outside the comic world). If you wanted most heroic, or my personal favorite it would be a much different list.
Reasons against some mentioned:
The Thing-the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Benjamin Grimm is fairly well-known, but I think I've heard mention of the Torch more outside my comic geek friends (I think he's on non-comic people's minds as "Rock-Hulk" if he's on them at all).
Cyclops-he's as well-known as any mutant outside Wolverine probably, but doesn't really have a fan following. He's more on the level of Professor X. Like "yep, that guy's on the X-men".
Storm-has a following but doesn't seem to be as well-known outside the comic world (except for horrible Hall Berry portrayal) as Cyclops and certainly nowhere near Wolverine.
Namor-brunette Aquaman, bit angrier. That's how he seems to be viewed outside comics, if he's known of at all. I much prefer Namor, but the feeling I get is that's a minority opinion (probably the cartoons and long-time Justice League membership).

Thor

Ugh! Citizen Kane (1941) does NOT deserve it's crown (though I do agree, it has a crown!).
A list of the top ten Marvel heroes is probably going to include...
Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
Wolverine
Captain America (Steve Rogers)
Iron Man (Tony Stark)
Daredevil (Matt Murdock)
The Thing
and The Hulk (Bruce Banner)
I would also disagree with the Thing, personally. If we are comparing like for like, I assume you're basically say who is the "elite" (characters that are critically acclaimed creations, why also being "top dogs" with the general public/very, VERY well known even by those who've never seen the films (or in this case, read the comics). I'd say Marvel's "elite" would be (in alphabetical order)
Captain America [Steve Rogers]
Daredevil [Matt Murdock]
Doctor Doom [Victor vonDoom]
the Hulk [Dr. Bruce Banner]
the Human Torch [Johnny Storm]
Iron Man [Anthony Stark]
Spiderman [Peter Parker]
Thor, God of Thunder
Wolverine [James "Logan" Howlett]
... the last one is hardest... I actually don't know. I do wonder if it's Storm. She's probably more well known to the general public than the Thing or Silver Surfer. And "critically" many fans and comic book reviews agree she is a brilliant creation (a good blend of looks, powers, personality). I would say Storm is the final "iconic" elite amongst Marvel. But that's a maybe.
I don't think Namor, Ghost Rider, the Silver Surfer, the Thing, Iceman, Magneto or Cyclops are "as iconic" as Storm, and in some cases not as well known/or as well "heralded" as brilliant creations.

Spiderman
Wolverine
Captain America
Iron Man
Storm
Thing
Thor
Cyclops

I class Hulk, Magneto and Namor in the same category, they are not classic super heroes, Namor has been a villain many times over the years, Magneto is very ambiguous and the Hulk was never a full heroes, Daredevil still not makes it to me. :)

Dr. Doom and Magneto are villains, so they're left out a list of the top ten heroes. They would certainly belong on a list of the top ten Marvel characters.
Why is Magneto not a hero? He's a member of the X-Men. Wolverine has regularly done some non-hero stuff, as has Stark, and Hulk, so anti-hero must count as part of the full test. Magneto just rescued Kitty, destroyed Predator Xs and Nimrods, protected the Atlanteans, and stopped an earthquake!
Oops, you say, but I have an Out. "He must be a hero for a majority of his appearance time." Okay, but The writers had the Beyonder put Magneto with the heroes, specifically saying his non-selfish motives are what distinguished him, in Secret Wars #1, which was 1984, nearly 30 years ago. He then taught the New Mutants. He first reversed his course in X-Men #150, 32 years ago, when he saw himself reflexively hurt a child saying: "As a boy, I believed. As a boy, I turned my back on God forever. Kill me if you wish, wind-rider. I will not stop you" and he basically has been a hero or anti-hero ever since.

These five should make the list without any arguement.
Spider-man
Hulk
Wolverine
Captain America
Ironman
The next six are a bit more up for debate. I realy couldn't tell you which one I would have to drop if I was making a top 10 list.
Thor
Storm
Blade
Thing
Punisher
Silver Surfer

Is Namor really as well-known or popular as Aquaman for DC? I know he was created first, but he didn't go on to the same type of success (the layoff between the golden and silver ages, then the rebirth at first as a super-villain instead of hero, along with the lack of cartoon appearances or membership on a prominent team until the '70s are all to blame for that). I agree, he's far more interesting than Aquaman (and I think I'm liking his current series more than I did Peter David's Aquaman), but I don't believe he's anywhere near as well known as even the Fantastic Four.
AcesX1X
04-15-2011, 11:10 AM
any success aquaman has had was based off of a cheesy cartoon (where people make fun of him from) and peter david grafting namor's personality onto him in the 90s.

Yeah, he sort of did. I remember the DC vs Marvel fight where he beat him by flopping a whale onto him and saying "that's your weakness Namor, you're too noble to cheat." and first thinking, ok Namor should be able to press the whale up with one hand and bitchslap Aquaman with the other, then secondly "too noble to cheat?" What comics was he reading?

I assumed that happened off panel. Aquaman was just able to restrain him with the whale long enough for the pin. Then Namor lifted it up and started whopping his butt.

So referencing a mediocre story like Secret wars is validation for him being a hero?
Even if the Beyonder initially put him on the heroes side. They really ousted him from the group almost instantly due to him being you guessed it a villain. None of the heroes considered him a hero by any means.
Now all the X-men stories your referencing have been undone by the other bad things hes done after those stories( like ripping the adamantium out of Wolverine) still cementing his status as a villain.
Magneto doesn't work as a hero considering her refuses to compromise his beliefs that mutants should be ruling over humans.

BUT I'm a big Wolverine fan and think Lobo's goofy.
BUT anyone who thinks Lobo couldn't pound the snot out of Wolverine hasn't been paying attention.

One character no one's mentioned so far who might belong in a list of the top ten heroes would be Jean Grey/ Phoenix. The Dark Phoenix Saga is pretty well known to even the most casual comic book fans. And Grant Morrison muddied the waters regarding whether Phoenix and Jean Grey were entirely separate entities.
Jean Grey's iconic given her sheer power and difficulty controlling it.

He may currently be on the side of the X-Men, but it's entirely plausible that he'll be in a more adversarial role soon enough.
You could certainly argue that he's one of Marvel's top ten heroes. Hell, he might be the most iconic villain turned hero.

Thor, Namor, and Howard the Duck.Thor probably belongs in the top ten, considering how well known he is, how many of you chose him and his position in the Avengers top three.
Plus, I could easily think of some truly acclaimed Thor comics, including but not limited to, the Lee/ Kirby Hercules saga, the Walt Simsonson run (especially the Surtur saga and introduction of Beta Ray Bill), the Robert Rodi/ Essac Ribbic Loki mini-series, JMS's run, Matt Fraction's initial one-shots and that Avengers story, in which Thor made a kick-ass appearance against Gravitron.
Howard the Duck is an intriguing possibility. He has personality, he has been satirized and the Steve Gerber run is acknowledged as one of the most groundbreaking things Marvel ever did.
I'm curious about some of the other guys mentioned. What are the stories I need to read to be convinced that Namor should be in the top ten?
Or Storm?
Or Ghost Rider?
Or Silver Surfer? Aside from his first appearance.
Or Johnny Storm?
Or Luke Cage?
Or Doctor Strange?

If it were top 10 my favorite, yes he would. Sadly I don't think he's that well-known outside the comic world. When most people think of the Black Panther they think of the black empowerment group from the '60s (or if they're cable news junkies like me about the two guys calling themselves the new black panthers and threatening to kill "cracker babies" to the shock and dismay of Fox News pundits). Why they didn't sign Wesley up for a Black Panther movie after the success of Blade I will never know (and we'd have to wait a while to get him now), a movie would have moved him easily into the top 10. I wouldn't mind the Old Spice Guy giving it a shot, he was decent in Chuck and seems to have the charisma.

how are we ranking this top 10. If you mean by popularity tp fans than I cannot agree with any of these lists.
I put him at top 10, because of what a powerful character he is. black Panther is one of the top 10 smartest men on the planet. One of the best h2h combatants. King of a nation that has never been conquered for thousands of years. With a rare mineral found nowhere else on earth. And he was truly the first black superhero in comics. truly a ground breaking character for several reasons. I'd say that makes him top 10.
However, if we are talking in terms of popularity and recognition.
It goes.
Spider-Man
Wolverine
Hulk
Ironman
Thor (And he wouldn't be on my list for general public a year ago)
Captain America
than after that there is a huge drop off. Because Marvel really only has 6 hugely popular characters. Than you have X-Men and Fantastic Four, but those are teams and not individual characters. And Maybe Deadpool if his movie gets made
And are we talking popularity with comic fans or the public in general cause there is a big difference?

Uhh... yes it does.
From a film making point of view, maybe Citizen Cane is the "greatest movie ever made." But from a point of pure enjoyment, I wouldn't even put it on a list. It is boring and hard to follow. Yeah, there is a lot of cleverness in how it was shot, but it certainly doesn't bring you in to the story. And that was a general opinion that I found among other people attending the film school I went to. We all basically acknowledged it as being great because such a big deal was made out of it, but none of us just loved the movie.
More on topic, here is what I would make of a top 10 Marvel heroes list.

2. Wolverine
3. Captain America
4. Iron Man
5. Hulk
6. Thor
7. Silver Surfer
8. Thing
9. Human Torch

Heroes does not necessarily equal recognizability, especially when dealing with random people. I'll leave villains off the list but I'm gonna add one particular character who is neither hero nor villain who should be on it as she is the Marvel version of Lois Lane, especially since she is front and center in three of the biggest grossing movies of all time.
