Im still finding it strange getting used to the new art style. I much preferred the previous artist (Dustin Nguyen?) who i think still did the cover artwork for issue #20. Kinda feels like PG all over again. Anyway...
Who here enjoyed issue #20?

The story was decent, but not particularly remarkable, compared to the other issues. I agree with you on the art.
The art's fine by me. This issue was a clear exposition issue to set up some more of the details for the story we'll see unfolding over the next few months, but as far as I'm concerned it was a fun read (though I'll probably enjoy it more when I read the whole story in one sitting).

Agree with this. This issue was hit and miss for me. The customization of the bat gadget things was a pretty cool idea. But the end fight was too short for my liking.

The end of the fight was meh, but it shows Steph's inner Bruce coming out.
How many times have we seen Bruce pull something like that?
I'm not saying that she is going to be Bruce Wayne, but it shows her maturation and experience showing through. Previously she would've ran in and tried to beat him straight up and after a few trials and errors would've won. Now she has everything prepared beforehand and beats him quickly.
Overall I'd think I'd give this issue between a 7 or 8. Nothing spectacular, but still adequately good.

Fun issue, as always. A lot of exposition, setting up for the next arc. I think the best part was the little Babs and Steph scene in the middle.
I don't like Ramon Bachs, though. I don't like his faces, and I just wish Nguyen would start doing the interiors again or they'd make Pere Perez a regular. Or, bring back Garbett!

I hate being nitpicky but how was Steph able to plant those batarangs on a guy who is running at Super-Speed even when she knew where he was going?

I liked the art but hate... the morphing compact. IT's stupid. It grates on my nerves just seeing it. If feels like...every other hero vehicle can morph.
It doesn't seem like a very ...creative ideal... must be Didio's.

One of the weaker issues in what I consider one of the best Bat-books out there. I really miss Dustin on interior art - those issues are really special. The art in this issue looks clunky in comparison.
It also seemed like witty snarky Steph was missing a bit in this issue and I agree that the car is totally stupid. "The Compact"? Really? We had to do a girly pun for the name of the car? What about the "Powder Puff"? Or the "Glitter Mobile"? Or the "Pretty Pony Prowler"?
Love the series but this issue didn't hit for me.

I brought this up in my blog post about the issue
but I think because this book can be so enjoyable, that it works against it sometimes. Take the Supergirl and recent Damian issue. Those were so good. Yet when something like this week's issue comes out, there's nothing wrong with it, its just not as good as the series can be.

Which pony was purple? Cheery something?
Oh... ah... nevermind ...I've never heard of them.

Batgirl isn't remarkable or groundbreaking, but what it is is good, clean, superhero fun. It's simple good vs. evil, and that's a refreshing change of pace from all the gray-area books that've been going on in the years prior. This is a simple book that fills a simple need, and I've loved every issue of it.

I thought "The Compact" was referring to the fact that she's now driving one of the smallest cars out there. The idea that it meant anything else never crossed my mind. Did everyone seriously think the name was referring to a type of makeup case? That is what you meant, no?

Heh, kind of sad I didn't catch it, but yes, it certainly works for her. The car is a good fit for her personality/character as well. It's a perfectly inconspicuous vehicle for a girl to store her flaming icerangs! Minus being purple and all.

Beat me to it. Also, a bit of a triple entendre, since it calls back to the early days of female Bat heroes when their gear would be disguised as makeup accessories.
Good issue. Miller's giving Steph her own rogues, which I thought was the one weakness of the series. Bachs's art is good overall, though he does people better than he does vehicles - the Compact looked pretty plain, as if he couldn't decide what he wanted it to look like.

One thing though, is anybody going to ask why Steph all of a sudden has a purple car when she's supposed to be a poor college student? Or are we going to slip that into comic book logic?

I wouldn't mind seeing that addressed especially since he address's other stuff that most other writers don't pay attention too like Steph's lack of sleep and her falling asleep in class because of her crime fighting.

I'm pretty sure she explains it the same way Bruce explains the Batmobile: she just doesn't drive it around out of costume.

That's what I assumed too. Otherwise she'd have to explain the thing to her mother, and I don't think 'Bruce Wayne gifted it to me in a fit of charity' is going to cut it with Mrs. Brown.

Except she's not going to drive it around in as 'Stephanie Brown'. Why would she ride a car that's obviously a little more hi-tech than the conventional model in a public place? And one that would link her to Batgirl?
As other people have said, it's the equivalent of Bruce's Batmobile. He doesn't drive that as Bruce Wayne, she doesn't drive the Compact as Steph Brown.

Okay, sounded like a sarcastic remark questioning Steph's hero abilities
but anyways, there's no difference in the statement saying "Batman Inc is funding Stephanie Brown" and "Batman Inc is funding Batgirl" I don't see what you're getting at.

As others have mentioned in the thread and Stephanie in the issue, the Compact is Batgirl's car, not Stephanie's. There is no reason to explain why Stephanie has a new car, because she doesn't, in the same sense that Bruce doesn't have a Batmobile, in terms of his secret identity.

Considered her popularity levels at school i doubt anyone would care:wink:

It's possible. Tim's old car, the Redbird (which Steph once made fun of him for naming... oh sweet irony), could transform to look like a clunker. Maybe Steph's can do the same.

No idea if this was an intentional callback or not (judging by the dialogue, probably not), but I liked that the villainous plot was almost exactly the same as the one from the very first Robin/Spoiler team-up. In that story, Cluemaster stole an armored truck full of money being sent to Washington to be destroyed. (Of course, as Tim smugly pointed out, banks punch holes in currency that's set to be destroyed, so the bills never would have passed muster anyway.)
Probably not intentional, but cool nonetheless.

He just did the Spiderman Annual by John Layman, and I think he's doing the Deadpool and Hulk Annuals as well, also written by John Layman (though I am not sure if he is on those...may be wrong)
He's also on "Fear Itself: The Defenders", written by Cullen Bunn.
Both of those are at Marvel.
