I sure this has been asked before, but I'm just curious what people consider to be the highpoint of the X-lineups. Not just your favorite characters, but your favorite renderings of the team.
My favorite is the UXM 180-200 crowd prolly--Cyke, Logan, Storm, Collussus, Nightcrawler, Prof X, Kitty, Rogue, Rachel and a smattering of Magneto. I felt this team had a lot of internal conflict going on that was cool to see working itself out--Logan struggling not to be a beast, Storm struggling powerless and with a vow against killing, Rogue making the change to hero, ditto for Mags, Rachel struggling with her past and Cyke struggling with marriage to a Jean Grey-clone.
Second favorite is the post-Mutant Massacre line-up. I never cared much for any of the characters they added--Havok, Psyloche, Longshot--but I really came to develop an attachment for all of em.

Yes, I quite like the current rosta mix. The teams all have something/someone I wanna see/read about, which means those damn executives at Marvel are gonna be taking alot of my not-very-hard-earned cash.
I think Mattbib did a thread before the crash about this, listing the various teams. My fave was the Blue and Gold team era, a good division of power and leadership skills plus some of my fave characters were about. True, they may not have had the best storylines, but that is not the question in this thread.
So it's a close call between now and Blue/Gold mix for me, but I think the Blue/Gold gets it- because the costumes weren't as bad back then, I wasn't fed up of some of the characters (that have gone nowhere or been overused or have lost direction) and the amount of books didn't murder my wallet.

Do you count that on the stories or the actual mix of characters. Storywise this era has to be the greatest, simply as it was the start of the bigger arcs, the longer character storylines etc. Nowadays everthing seems a re-telling of the classic periods from the first Claremont run.

The classic Claremont/Byrne team is still the best in my opinion. I've always been fond of Mutant teams with a coherent lineup, very simple powers and strong personalities. The original "New" X-Men roster provided the blueprint for that. The New X-Men lineup had the same quality, as well as non-X-Men Mutant groups such as the original New Mutants and the original Excalibur.
After Byrne left the book, the X-Men lineup became too cluttered and too complicated for my tastes (at least until Morrison took over), although I have a soft spot for the Australian outback team, which was a very youthful, very energetic, very modern and proactive lineup.

The Claremont/Byrne team c. "Dark Phoenix Saga" - Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Kitty, Storm - is pretty hard to beat. I'm also very fond of the team c. Claremont/Smith/JR, Jr. - Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Storm, Rogue. Both teams were full of characters with strong, dynamic personalities and versatile, coherent abilities. No extradimensional, cyborg or alternate-future beings, no stupid psi-ninjas running around in thong panties, no convoluted-backstories at that point, etc.

Both. Wolverine was actually an interesting character NOT this memory faked walking mutant with the ability to be evrything. He was cool, but not the only thing that the X-Men had going or Marvel. Storm's simple, yet poignant orgin story was fresh and sad and Peter's innocence and 'pure heart' made these stories more gripping than having Magneto destroy NY or Sublime or anything that has happened nowadays.
What I liked best, is that these new X-Men were second tier characters(Banshee and Wolverine) to totally new characters(Storm,Nightcrawler and Colosuss). ANd they broke away from the old characters, mainly with exception of Cyclops and Marvel Girl. Which is what I think that they need to do today.
We need new characters, which is why I posted in the thread, what would do with the X-men that the core characters need to go and maybe make guest appearances and have a whole new crop of mutants be The X-Men with maybe one or two old characters as mentors.

Which is why I like the comic. It still has a ways to go, but by introducing these new characters, The Outsiders, like the "new" X-Men, make the whole process fresher and more enticing.

Got that right. Time-travel, thongs and psi-ninjas have not been good for X-World. I think I'm the only fan who actually likes the original Psyloche better. She was so much cooler when she was vunerable.
On another note, I'm shocked there are no votes for the originals.

I liked the originals in X-Factor, but I'm not a big fan of the very early issues of X-Men. I thought the characters were bland and nondescript, a poor substitute to the Fantastic Four.

I liked the Australian Outback line up.
They were young, determined, sexy, mean, lean, powerful and out to do something about the world in which they lived. Mind you, the whole 'hidden heroes' point was derailed by Inferno and its aftermath. But the reluctant members of that team - Dazzler, Havok - as well as the fiercer new blood - Psylocke - was a nice change from the high family quotient of the pre-Mutant Massacre team. That team was all cuddly. This new team was very...modern. I liked that shift.

Aside from the original Uncanny X-Men (plus Kitty) I love the original New Mutants as well as the X-Force rooster of John Fracnis Moore when he teamed up with Adam Pollina.
And I like every rooster Mirage is in. :)

Yeah, Logan was better back then and I always loved Colossus. Storm has never been a fave of mine, but we all have different tastes.
I don't think we'll see a whole new line up of X-Men given the amount of X-Men at the mo- it would be unbelievable to say that they all have had enough.
I think the closest we'll get is Academy X, due to the structure of the current X-Men and the amount of characters. A host of new characters would be unreliable to carry the amount of books that marvel wants the X-Men to hold.
I'd like a story to emerge about a young group of mutants, captured for some reason, rescued by the X-Men, then thrown into space/through time whatever with a couple of x-Men. Have these young mutants grow fond of each other, have them learn what it means to be an X-Man. Then have them return and conflict emerges when they step on the X-Men's toes.
To be honest, the current idea of three teams all with the same basic agenda is ridiculous. It should be more varied.
An X-Men team for the audience- the photogenic, loveable, non-murky background ones that are the visual face for the regular people in the Mu- like a mutant Avengers team.
An underground team for those dark missions that need to be done.
A school type X-team, training and locating new mutants. Less superhero, more teenage angst and pain plus conflict with parents/others.
A brand new team ( with the exception of a couple of X-Men ) that come back from some trip and step on the other X-Men's toes.

For some reason I love that early time when I think Silvestri was on the book and it was more or less "X-Girls". The team had Rogue, Psylocke, Dazzler, Storm, Polaris, Longshot and a few others...
That one cover with the Juggernaut taking it to Dazzler (like issue 221 or so)
is the era I love most. That Australian Outback stuff was great.
I find myself always rereading either the Claremont/Cockrum or the Claremont/Byrne stories; therefore, I'll pick that era for the team, although I like X-Men all throghout Claremont's Uncanny X-Men #94-278 run...

It's kind of a toss up with me as to which is my favorite lineup. My faovrite X-Men lineup more or less was Uncanny 150-214 or so with Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Collusus, Rouge, and Phoenix II all included. But I also really loved the New Mutants when it was the big team that included Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma, Moonstar, Wolvebase, Magik, Warlock, Cypher, and Magma.
Honerable mention goes to:
X-Force - Cannonball, Sunspot, Warpath, Feral, Siryn, Meltdown, Rictor, Shaterstar.

One roster I really liked is from late in Claremont's run
Storm
Forge
Gambit
Wolverine
Psylocke
Jubilee
Banshee
I have a fondess for that team maily because they didn't get a lot of page time together before X-men #1 launched and the split the team into blue and gold. Uncanny 275 was also the first X-men comic I ever read and therfore is the X-men issue I've probably read the most. The team only lasted like 8 issues really.
Also along the same lines I really liked Austen's team late in his run on Uncanny.
Jubilee
Iceman
Nightcrawler
Archangel
Wolverine
Havok
Polaris
Juggernaut
Husk
Northstar
It's a crying shame that team didn't get a lot of time together under a better pen.

The Australia era team had a different team dynamic but was interesting in its own right.
I'd give an honorable mention to the team that faced Proteus - the classic Byrne line-up plus Havok and Polaris.

my fav is the Blue and Gold team. It had my favorites at that time (Cannonball has since become my favotire X-Man of all) and cool division of members. I always wanted to see how the originals interact and work with the other members as part of one team instead of as X-Factor.
My second favorite was probaply the reason team ups in New X-Men, Austen's Uncanny and X-treme (after Cannonball joined)
The current three teams seem promising but its not the same without Jean.
I really liked the original Generation X line up... every incarnation of X-Force except when it became X-force/X-staics... Astonishing X-men and Generation Next from the AoA were also pretty good as well.

The movie line-up is probably my favorite. Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine, and Jean really are the X-Men.
I also really like the Outback team, which is strange because I don't like Longshot, Dazzler, or Havok at all. The off-beat dynamic of that group just worked for me, though.
I also enjoyed the group featured in New X-Men #132. Storm, Jean, Prof. X, Quicksilver, Sabra, and Thunderbird III would make interesting team, especially if Looney Lorna was part of the group, as well.

ditto.
The other time i felt the X-Men team was fresh & exciting was the team back in a Bastion-stripped Mansion, Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, Beast, Cannonball, & the new comers, reluctant Dr. Cecelia Reyes, vicious former villain & psycho Marrow, & the quirky unknown Maggott.
That was DOPE.
Another awesome line-up is Austen's Nightcrawler, Angel, Iceman, Northstar, Wolverine, Jubilee, Husk, Havok, Polaris & Juggernaut.
It would've been SOOoOOO SCHWEET!!~~
Unfortunately, the execution sucked donkey meat.

I loved Uncanny 268, with Logan, Betsy and Jubes taking on the Hand with the Black Widow and featuring the WWII flashback tale. Amazing art. The zing between the three X-men was great. Psylocke was still cool back then.

Hopefully if she comes back she will be cool again. Bad 90's for her character.
I personally never read the Maggot Marrow Dr. Reyes team. I take it i should look for some issues?
To be honest i never got behing Maggot and Marrow at all. Marrow had to much of the "female wolverien" push for her character i felt. And Maggot's power was just goofy, but then again they cant all be winners

I really liked the team from X-men 80 to the start of "The Twelve" story.
Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, Marrow, Nightcrawler, Collossus, Shadowcat and Gambit.
They where awesome in battle and had there was alot of tension between many of the members and they didnīt have a telepath, which is unusual for an Xteam.
And I liked the first X-treame X-men team.
Storm, Rogue, Beast, Bishop, Sage, Psylock and Thunderbird.
A very team of mixed races and powers to compliment each other and great friendship amongst them all.

Loved loved LOVED PAD's X-Factor. (Yeah, who didn't, right?) Have an obvious fondness for the Australian X-Men... though to be honest, even apart from having Longshot on the team, it just felt like such a departure from the norm, such a new adventure, that it was cool... loved all the new mixes of personalities clashing. My absolute favorite, though? The 9 original New Mutants. I firmly believe that if you put those 9 characters together, you have every possible variation of character interrelationships necessary to tell a great story; they're just so amazingly diverse and versatile, there's nothing you can't do with that group. Oh, if only...

I wasn't a terribly big fan of the 90's, but I liked the teams. Now I couldn't remember this off the top of my head, so I used UXN and the team during X-Cutioner's Song was:Archangel, Beast, Bishop, Colossus, Cyclops, Gambit, Jean Grey, Iceman, Jubilee, Psylocke, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine, and Professor Charles Xavier and I loved that team. It was just terrific, partially because of all the other people on other teams balancing it out! There was dynamic personalities, not everyone just fell in line and some of them were just so....Idk...not the same from Claremont's run (don't get me wrong, I love him more than words can wield the matter), but the sudden change of style was refreshing for me.

Hopefully 'X-Men: The End' Book 3 will feature something like that. Since it seems to weeding the X-Men back to the original five. So hopefully for Book 3 we'll see the final battle between the original X-Men against their deadliest foes ever. But I still want a current canon book which features the five. I know that would mean having Jean back and that Cyclops would still probably be w/ Emma but put Emma on another team, say Havok's, I mean it's not like they've never put Scott and his g/f on seperate teams before. The Australian Era, despite having a few members I disliked, had a wonderful balance.
I also really enjoyed the group Morrison used in New X-Men #132 (Storm, Xavier, Jean, Sabra, Quicksilver, Thunderbird III, and Looney Lorna). I'm not sure the group dynamics would be strong enough for an extended period of time, nor am I sure how any antagonist could really handle this group, with uber-mutants like Charles, Jean, Storm, and Lorna, along with a speedster, a scrapper, and a high-powered energy wielder. The group may have only been suitable for one issue, but I quite enjoyed said issue--probably my favorite of Morrison's run.
The group featured in Phoenix: EndSong is probably my favorite of all. Storm, Emma, Cyclops, Wolverine, Kitty, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Angel. That's an incredible group, imo.

...you should be shot... I would never wish that on Jean...
He's a lying, cheating sack of shit... I don't even really want Emma with him either... He is NO boyscout.
But I'd like to see the original team aswell.
You been talking w/ my g/f haven't you, I think she wants to shoot me right now too. Look it would make for great story lines, I'd like them back together and I love the Original X-Men.

Lol. I'm glad you didn't find that offensive... after I wrote it I realized how it sounded but got distracted and forgot to add "jk/jk"
Your g/f sounds majorly awesome and I think on some level yes, it would make great story lines but... please... for Jeans sake... :( Hasn't she been through enough?

I liked the Blue/Gold era since that was the one that I grew up with however if you want my ideal team you have to add two of my favorites, Kurt and Kitty, to that team. I also really like Whedon's team if you return Emma to being a villain and bring back Jean to be with Scott. I'm tired of seeing Apocalypse and the White Queen lead the X-Men. At least, Kitty's there to be the moral compass.

I miss a book featuring the original team. Hopefully we'll see the original five plus Xavier back together again at some point. I just liked the interplay between them, they were such good friends. And now with the way the teams are split up, Bobby, Warren, and Hank never share any panel time anymore. :(
I'm with you. And we won't have the original team back together now that Jean is dead.<g>

mine is the 90s blue/gold team too. There was something exiting about seeing the original team back in the book and team they started with the newer characters like Gambit and Psylocke.

Well i have two favorite line ups...
My first is...
The all new all different era...From Giantsize to Uncanny 138
This would include
Wolverine
Cyclops
Storm
Collossus
Nightcrawler
Banshee
Phoenix...Though of course the team would change between giant size and 138 from Banshee leaving in 129, to Jeans "death" in 137...then after 138 the roster was pretty rotable....you would have member coming in and out but up to that point it was pretty stable...
The second would of course be the Outback team as well...that team just kicked ass.

well, that wouldnt be bad if it didn't stupidly throw years of character development out the window... Scott isn't apocalypse anymore and Emma has proven herself on MANY occasions.
get over it...

I liked the Juggernaut and Sammy Pare storyline. Very Hallmark Channel.
I cried when Black Tom killed Sammy and didn't get the chance to know the truth.

Grant Morrison's team would be my favorite if Xorn haven't turned out to be Magneto, or Sublime, or whatever.
Anyway, my fav. i think it would Astonishing, followed closely by the All New X-men and the O5.
Also the team pre-Onslaught was cool: Cyclops and Storm as co-leaders and also Phoenix, Beast, Wolverine, Iceman, Gambit, Bishop (at a time in which he wasn't annoying) and Cannonball. Too bad that not much came out of it.

Definitely the Astonishing team. They've got all their bases covered:
Cyclops (stoic leader)
Emma Frost (telepathic hottie)
Beast (brainy freak)
Colossus (powerhouse)
Shadowcat (young, voice of the reader)
Wolverine (brawler)

X-Men's current one is the best in some years.
It has Rogue, the quick thinking and reckless leader
Iceman, the wise cracking veteran newbie
Cannonball, his southern gentleman lover
Mystique, the sneaky villainess out for redemption or for someone's throat
and supporting players Northstar, the snarky speedster and his looney, multiple personality twin sister Aurora.
