I looked around to see if this had already been posted but didn't see it. If I missed it, sorry for the double post. Apparently, Engelhart and Rogers are going to do a miniseries with our favorite Dark Knight.
I loved their first run and thought they did one of the more definitive versions of Batman. For those of us who haven't been that happy with Batman's characterization of late, this might be a harkening back to the "good old days".

Outstanding!
Forget Miller and Lee - THIS is the Batman! Only O'Neil/Adams and Kane/Robinson can compare.

It's funny...for such an acclaimed run, it was REALLY short, about 5 issues from Detective Comics #472-475 plus #479.
Then again, I still think Byrne/Stern was the greatest Cap run, and that only lasted, like, 8 issues. :D

I saw this over in YABS. Huzzah! We'll all be kings!
It's looking like a really good year for DC comics, folks. And I'm excited about that.

As far as I'm concerned, this project is All-Star Batman.

I seem to remember that Silver St. Cloud already came back once, though, in LOTDK a few years ago. I believe it was in a story by the late Archie Goodwin.

WRITTEN BY STEVE ENGLEHART AND LEN WEIN; ART BY MARSHALL ROGERS, WALTER SIMONSON, TERRY AUSTIN, AL MILGROM, AND DICK GIORDANO; COVER BY ROGERS AND AUSTIN
Long requested by devoted Batman readers, one of the most memorable eras of the Dark Knight's adventures - the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers run in DETECTIVE COMICS - is collected in a single volume, the BATMAN: STRANGE APPARITIONS trade paperback. Featuring an introduction by Englehart and a new cover by Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin, this eagerly anticipated collection also includes work by writer Len Wein (THE DREAMING: TRIAL AND ERROR) and artist Walter Simonson (MANHUNTER: THE SPECIAL EDITION). Reprinting DETECTIVE COMICS #469-479, BATMAN: STRANGE APPARITIONS finds the Dark Knight's relationship with Gotham City's government - presided over by the corrupt "Boss" Rupert Thorne - at an all-time low. With little help from the GCPD, Batman faces an array of incredible foes, including Dr. Phosphorus (in his first appearance), the Joker, Clayface, Professor Hugo Strange (who haunts Thorne after the boss orders his execution) and Deadshot, the deadly marksman whose battle with Batman atop a giant typewriter is one of the best-remembered sequences in either character's history.

Wow! I just re-read the Strange Aparitions TPB last week. These are probably my favorite Batman stories of all time- other creators (ONeal/Adams, Miller/Mazuchelli) may have equalled the Englehart/Rogers run, but nobody's ever done better. Englehart's Batman is still a dark brooding detective, but he's also a real human being inside, something so many other creators forget. I'm very excited about this. (And was Englehart hinting at JLA project down the line in the Newsarama article?)

Personally I prefer Adams/O'Neil... NOBODY draws Batman better than Adams (IMO anyway) but the Englehart/Rogers run is my SECOND favorite of all time!
Compared to crap like Hush, this is what comics should be on a monthly basis.

Awesome. Loved their classic run. And you know what makes this even more awesome?
Dr. Freakin' Double X!!!
Ever since I read the "D" volume of WHO'S WHO IN THE DC UNIVERSE, I thought Dr. Double X was the coolest super-villain ever. (Hey, stop laughing! I was young, all right?) I was always disappointed I never read a story about him, but now I've finally got my chance!

I have been waiting to see Marshall Rogers draw Batman again for years! The last time was an issue of Secret Origins I think, and I think it was the Earth 2 Batman as well!
I've got a set of four prints of Rogers' Batman, got them for $ 4.00 from my comic shop back in the day!
Englehart and Rogers' Batman has been my GOLD standard since their initial run all those years ago on Detective Comics. This is the best comics news I have ever heard, no doubt about it.

Then you must have missed the Archie Goodwin/James Robinson written LOTDK story that Captain Jim referenced that reintroduced Silver St. Cloud. Rogers drew that. The story's interesting though, it's not up to the Englehart standard (or Archie or Robinson's high points either), but the Rogers art is very good.

Do you know what issues of LOTDK the story was in. I know this isn't in a trade, but I'd seriously consider tracking down the actual issues of a Goodwin/Rogers Bat story.

I'll be passing.
I got Strange Apparitions and it just didn't rock anywhere near as much as I was expecting from the constant raves, the E\R run gets.

LOTDK 132-136. Found it by accident last year at my almost local comic shop. They didn't have anything I was much interested in so I started thumbing through the back issues he keeps on the shelves. Saw the Rogers name and knew I had to get them all.
It's not as good as the E/R/A stuff, I don't think Wiacek is the best inker for Rogers, but it is interesting to see Rogers draw Thomas Wayne in the bat Halloween costume. Plus Silver does make an appearance.
Forgot about that Secret Origins story. I'll have to track that one down too. Would love to see all of Rogers Batman work collected in one place (after this new story is completed of course). He's THE Batman artist as far as I'm concerned.

I actually thought that LOTDK story was quite good. Not one of the best Batman stories ever written, of course, but I remember that I did rate it as one of the best Batman stories of the year in which it was published. You see a lot of Thomas & Martha Wayne, meet Bruce's grandfather, and learn the origin of the Wayne fortune.

I believe I'm choking up with nostalgia. Maybe DC'll keep them both around the Bat-verse for a while.
Even after Englehart left the book, Rogers commenced to rocking the pencil with Len Wein as writer. I LOVE that Clayface two-part! I also liked the Calculator story that ran through the back-ups and concluded as a Batman story (Rogers drew a sweet Hawkman).
Can a return of Michael Golden in a DC or Marvel mini be far behind (crosses fingers)?

Simonson is one of my all time favorite artists, but I'm not too fond of his art in those issues either. Al Milgrom has never inked him well. Walt's pencils have always looked best under his own inks or Bob Wiacek's.

Just buzzed through all the posts on this topic on the DC boards and saw really cool things.
1. A lot of great discussion (not flaming) over the characterization of Bruce Wayne and the need/lack of need for such characterization.
2. With as great an pair of artists as Rogers and Austin are (and they truly are!) the conversation was almost entirely about Englehart's writing ability and to some extent Englehart vs. Miller in their take on Batman.
Wow! Talking about charatcterization and writing! Actually storytelling being the focus! Whether anyone is looking more forward to this or All-Star, it is great to see so much potential for great comics.

I haven't heard... but that's likely because I get all my info from here and Newsarama.

Being a looooooong time comic reader can have it's drawbacks and this is one of them.
I did thoroughly enjoy the original run that these guys had in Detective. The art and stories at the time stood out, mostly because the 'other' Batman titles really had nothing special going on in them. Although, I was constantly on the lookout for some of my all time favourite, Jim Aparo.
When Englehart/Rogers... and let's not forget Terry Austin, hit the stands, a new dynamic 'look' was brought to the reader. There were some complaints that the artwork was rather stiff, but I think the average reader, such as myself, overlooked any such artistic critique and just enjoyed the eye-candy and great stories.
Now... all these years later, and I think I'm in the camp which says, you can't go home again. The artwork previews that I've seen for this series, strike me as awful. Rogers artwork seems to be a caricature of his former style. I obviously can't speak about the stories, yet the artwork hasn't sold me the return of these two creators.
Not trying to dampen any enthusiasm others might have for this project, I just know that it doesn't 'look' like my cup of tea.

.... and let's not forget. There is so much 'other' stuff coming from DC, this year, a lot of which looks awesome, that I don't think they'll notice if I skip this run!
