Hey all, found a stack of great comics from my great grandmas place. Turok, lots of war comics. Fell instantly for them..
Very easy to get into and enjoy. Was looking for something similar. Its certainly alot of work keeping with the universes and storylines of marvel and DC, not to mention the superpower and costumes isn't so much my thing. Been looking at getting some TPB of the classic turoks and even into the likes of archie for something refreshing and fun and down to earth in a sense.
Really like cat and mouse detective stories, adventures of all kinds that are somewhat based in reality (like turok, dinosaurs were real and native americans as well) easier for me to relate too. Don't mind romance stories, as long as it's done well. Absolutely hate the ''emo'' comics of today, except for batman of course. Don't care about the whole deal, must've started with spawn i think personally. Shock value also don't care for.
Got a soft spot for Colonial America/Oregon trail stuff though, figure theres got to be some books out there on that? Seen some Civil war ones so why not colonial america as well.
Any ideas? Prefer TPBs, but am willing to track down issues if i can get it off ebay for cheap.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Dark Horse is doing hardcover archive editions of Turok. Unless these sell real well, don't expect any TPB of them. But look around, and you can get them at reasonable prices.
You might like their archives of the Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery series that Gold Key did. These are short fantasy/sf stories with a twist, some mild horror.
There is more Archie stuff coming out from both IDW and DH you might like.

DC's Tomahawk was set in the colonial-era frontier, though it often went pretty far afield during, I guess, the early/mid-'60s to include things like giant gorillas & the like.
No trade collections, damn the luck (I've been whining off & on for years that a Showcase Presents volume -- or, better yet, 3 or 4 of 'em -- is badly needed; ditto for Sea Devils, Unexpected, Mystery in Space & several others, but of course I digress ...), & I don't know how cheaply copies can be had for. I own #s 92-130, which tells me that at least 4 or 5 years ago they could be found on eBay pretty inexpensively if one merely wants them to read rather than fetishize or whatever.

My favorite classic comics are Gould's Dick Tracy.
I usually fall for the Harvey, Dell, and Gold Key books.
Ripley's Believe It or Not is neat stuff.

If you enjoyed Turok, you might also enjoy Doc Savage. Great adventure stories. This Showcase book is coming out in June:

Another book that is coming out April 12th is Frank Frazetta's White Indian. I believe the setting is colonial era:

Mighty Samson is another great adventure series. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world where Samson has gained incredible strength through radiation. This is Volume 1 here:

Lastly, for your detective story fix you might enjoy the best of Crime Does Not Pay, which are pulp crime stories from the 40's. The individual issues are expensive but there is a trade coming out soon:

Wow! Thanks for all the quick responses, I already looked into the dark horse turoks, as well as journey which seemed right up my alley. Hopefully these 2 will keep me busy till those books mentioned by Brain VI come out. Those all look really excellent though im not sure on the cover of the doc savage at first glance, hehe.

I agree that cover does not do the Doc justice. Check out this link here to see the actual covers: http://www.coverbrowser.com/search?q=doc+savage
