I was finally overwhelmed with a bug after 2+ years of not being sick. Blah! I've been down for two days and am feeling much better already. My wonferful cat Pajo (paw-hoe), short for Paul Joseph, stuck to me like glue and I'm sure is responsible for my quick recovery.

Unfortunately I live in a "no pets" building AND I'm allergic to both dogs and cats (dogs more than cats, and apparently dogs have 3 allergen triggers whereas cats have only one so people tend to have worse dog allergies than cat allergies). It's tough because I love both doggies and kitties to bits, but I manage to get fuzz therapy through other people's pets. Like my brother's dog, July who is my favourite furry nephew. Here is is humiliated in clothes (don't worry, we only did this once. Okay, twice) and retrieving one of his smaller sticks. He's a nut. We got to look after him over the holiday as my brother and sister-in-law were on the other side of the country with her parents. I got to walk July three times a day.

Australian cattle dogs are very difficult to wear out.

I'm the opposite, Maija. I'm much more allergic to cats. But they can both take me out pretty fast, especially in pet houses that aren't kept too clean.

Here are some of my lads. Not as furry or friendly but I love 'em just the same.

Hey nice thread! I just love Pajo. He looks like a great cat. July looks like a sweety too. Man I really feel sorry for people who can't have pets - whatever the reason. Here's Loki where he shouldn't be. Casually hanging out in the sun with the cooking stuff. We've never seen him up there before. -Cats! Gotta love 'em.

Here's my two boys, Max and Min enjoying a nap. Max is our 3 year old Boston Terrier, and Min showed up to visit this summer as a stray kitten. They got along great right away, I don't know if it has anything to do with their both having very similar markings or not. We "adopted" Min, and now both of them spend their days sleeping.

This is a great thread. Everyone's pets look like sweeteys. Keep 'em coming people. Pets are great.

Loki is my cat too so I figure I can post more pictures of him. He's hanging out in the tub in the first one and the second one illustrates how Morna makes a good chunk of her posts here on the forum. I took a glassblowing course in Red Deer, Alberta about five summers ago and ended up adopting Loki and bringing him back home on the plane as my carry-on bag (in a small kennel). A friend had found him as a healthy stray when he was about 1 year old. He was very high strung and wary for the first few years but we've managed to turn him into a real sucky cuddly cat.

Here's my family's loveable little scamp. His name's Brutus, and sometimes I swear he fully understands us humans and is far too smart for his own good. Over the holidays when I was back home, I had fun for a few minutes nudging the bag of his favorite treats and watching him automatically lick his lips in a conditioned response. Until he realized what was going on and gave me the most scathing look I've ever seen on an animal!

Patrick, that is really cool about your cat helping you get better. Pets can be surprisingly keen. Hey, maybe we need a thread about spooky pet stories...

Ruta, for you (http://members.aol.com/AHTerrier/home.html). (I've done quite a bit of research on this breed and it's a very interesting, unique breed. We plan on getting one someday, when we can afford the price tag!)

Hellboyone, I love your tank! We have always had fish tanks until this house; it's too small. When we get another one, though, I am going to have to steal your idea!

We had two pet rats, but both died this year, one just before C-mas *sniff*.

We have a 3-toed box turtle, which I somehow have not yet managed to get a picture of. He was found being chased by a bunch of kittens and my parents brought him to us. He lives in a garden box in the back yard and is currently hibernating. (Here's the funny part of his story; we live in a town of about 30,000. I put a "found" ad in the paper, and I got SIX calls from people with lost turtles, and NONE of them was the one we had!!)

Cocoa (http://www.users.qwest.net/~fsdebra1/Resources/0903cocoa1.jpg) limped out in front of my van one day, and when I stopped to check on her, she stole my heart. She did go back to her owners for a couple of weeks, but they eventually called and said we could have her. (This was a time when I was adamant that we would ONLY have a non-shedding, SMALL dog...)

Cocoa was REALLY lonely, she just LOVES other dogs, so we got her a dog. Yes, we actually got a dog for our dog. In case you missed him on the OT thread, this is Baldrick (http://www.users.qwest.net/~fsdebra1/Resources/0903baldrick2.jpg). He was taken off death row at a kill shelter by a local rescue group; he was so scared he was trying to convince everyone that he wanted to rip their throats out! It was all bravado, though, he's really just a sweetheart.

Anyone have birds? My hubby is talking about getting a bird now that we have open shelf space where the rat cage was. (I said no more rats; they are so sweet & intelligent that you get really attached to them, and they only live about 2 years!)

Actually, they've got them living quite happily in Canada. They're definitely house-dogs, not the kind you can keep in a pen out back, but they don't seem to mind the cold anymore than we humans do.

What a great bunch of animals! I love all of your pets too. ;)

Okay, pet story (Sir E's kitty in a tub pic reminded me).

My wife and I had just gotten married and consolidated households into our new home. The kitty station (aka litter box) was set up in the basement but I hadn't got to officially show the cats yet. They pretty much only need to be shown and they're good to go.

Well, Pajo needed to pee and was very confused. He started meowing weirdly and I thought he was just freaked out being in a new place (change is bad). He ran into the bathroom, jumped in the tub, and peed down the drain. Very smart cat. I was very proud and praised him for being a good kitty. My wife was horrified. I reminded her it could have been the couch and she cheered up.

I need to be fair and post a pic of our girl cat Tori (short for Anectoria).

One of my best friends had a dog that figured that out all on her own. If he didn't make it home from school in time to take her out, she'd pee in the tub. Nobody ever taught her that!

Now, of course, my dog never managed to figure that out...

I know what you mean. As a kid I was only allowed to keep snakes and turtles that I found while trudging through the swamps and woods for the summer. My parents never let me keep a pet long term.

I always kid them that by not letting me have scaly pets as a kid is why I have so many now.

Well, I agree that any snake caught in the wild should not be kept as a pet. Especially with the large captive breeding industry for snakes that exists these days. Many species of popular snakes are breed in captivity for the pet trade and there's no shame in keeping those as pets.

You have to remember that even a wild snake only moves to find optimal temperature, food, avoid predators, and reproduce. In captivity, all of those neccessities are supplied, with the occassional exception of reproduction :) . After eating, wild snakes may not move for days (as long as they are in a burrow or some sort of shelter). As long as the enclosure is big enough for the snake to stretch out in, there's nothing cruel about keeping them in cages (its not like keeping a high energy dog couped up in a 5'X5' kennel for its entire life).

It's cool that you care, though! The only thought that most people have when they see a snake is how to kill it :evilangry .

We had a king snake that visited with us for a while. Named Elvis, what else? My hubby found him in the back yard, just a little baby! He lived in a tank for a few weeks until we realized that he was really not happy there, not eating at all, and we let him go. That was a pretty sad experience, and I definitely agree that people shouldn't keep wild-caught snakes as pets.

We also had a little lizard that had somehow escaped a bird (I forget exactly what kind he was - some kind of gecko, I believe). When my hubby found him, it had to have been right after his escape; he was still bleeding. He'd lost his tail and broken his lower back. We honestly thought he would die. All he could do was drag his back legs the first few weeks. But he ate the bugs my hubby brought him, and eventually not only did he grow the tail back, but he regained almost all of his movement in his legs! It was really neat to watch him slowly improve. And he was the coolest little guy, too; he recognized my hubby and would come running out like a little dog whenever he saw him.

(Yes, my hubby is like a little kid when it comes to these things. We've also had a pet praying mantis, a walking stick, ant farms, and he tried to get me to let him keep some spider he found in the desert! *shudder*)

As soon as I get my own place I'm getting this:

Is that an Asian Water Monitor? Nile Monitor?

Monitors are alot of work and get very big, so make sure you do your homework before picking one up. A cage of appropriate size is expensive, unless you can make on. They are also notorious for being escape artists.

My monitor was a Savannah, which is one of the smaller species and he was alot of work. He was also very rewarding as a pet.

As long as you are prepared for it, they're alot of fun! You can pick up books on how to care for most monitor species at your local pet store.

Good luck!!

The regenerative abilities of reptiles and amphibians are well known, but this is AMAZING! Regained movement in his legs after partial paralysis?! Wow! How long did it take?

Yeah, the best indicator that a reptile is unhappy or sick is that it wont eat. Otherwise, it's pretty hard to tell if something's wrong with them.

Snakes and lizards are cool, but my preference is for pets that can catch a frisbee or purr in my lap.

The cat's purr is supposed to help it heal, so maybe Pajo's purring cured your cold, petriacce.

Still, I like catching and holding garter snakes. They feel really neat. But I let them go again. They're fast little suckers.

Yeah, it really was amazing/weird. We really thought he would die; he actually had a little kink in his back where it'd broke. It was fairly far down, though, pretty close to his tail, but he was completely dragging both hind legs when we got him. We considered just letting him go in the yard again, to complete his life in the food chain, but decided to at least keep him warm & fed until he died. As I recall, it was about six months for him to regain all the movement, and I'm sure he was never as fast or flexible as he should have been. After that, he didn't seem to get any better, and he could never "grasp" with the hind toes the way he could with his front. Still, it was pretty incredible.

He died completely out of the blue, no sign of illness at all, about 2 years after we got him. I'm not sure if that's normal life-span for them, but we weren't sure if we just hadn't been feeding him right (bugs & worms, mostly) or if it was the injury or what. :(

It's hard to know if you're doing it for them or for you sometimes but it is really kool when it works for both - and especially against the odds! PS I really believe purrs are healing. I can feel the stress melt away when Loki sits on me and purrs up a storm.

It IS hard to be stressed with a purring cat on you. I mean, whatever you're so stressed about is just minute compared to the fact that this creature is totally content simply because he's sitting on your lap.

Didn't want to sound condescending before. I'm just so used to getting emails etc from random people who see my website and say: "I found (blank) in my backyard and want to keep it as a pet. What should I do?". OR I also get alot of these: "I saw a (Blank) on Animal Planet last night and was thinking of getting one as a pet. WHat should I do?"

Most of these folks, although well-intentioned, have no idea what they're getting themselves into and it usually ends up badly for the critter.

Good like with the Mangrove!

Well, it's hard to say. These little critters like House Geckos and Anoles don't have really long life spans in the first place. Couple that with the fact that it was seriously injured at one point, and there's no way of knowing how old it was when you found it.

You did your best. These things tend to happen. They're insectivores in the wild, so feeding him bugs is the right thing to do (Plus, he still lived two years after suffering, what sounds like, a cracked spine!).

i have alittle advice for you.

DONT GET A BIRD.

we had 15 at one time. kinda a spur-of-the-moment-thing my dad had. he took in abused birds and raised them back to health.

he have had (i know im going to misspell lots of these)
1 cocateil(rosey(name is very misleading,she was EVIL!))
2 quakers(toby and another)
1 blue and gold macaw( still hace, named indy, doesn't stop screaming)
2 i-ferget-what-their-called(red and sunny, inseperable)
1 cocatoo (the thing adored me, it even said my name. its name was cry baby)
plucky the whats-it
sky and amise

we had a bunch of others, but now all we have are red, sunny, and indy.

for some reason all the evil birds that didn't like any one liked me. cry baby liked everbody, but toby, red, sunny, and rosey loved me....and bit every one elses fingers and ears.

birds have alot of personality, but they are very messy, flinging seed around and pooping. i usualy have to sweep under the cage 2 or 3 times a day.

and birds are intelligent. they know how to unlock doors. they know how to pull down those things they put on dog leashes. if you get a bird, put binkis on the doors and buy plastic bowls

Heeheehee... silly kitties, sneaky doggies and A COCKTAIL WEENIE!!!!!

She (?) is soooo cute.

I lived with a regular-sized wire-haired dachshund named Futon for a while. He belonged to my roomate, John. When John got Futon as a puppy he had a roommate at the time who was into all things Japanese, though not Japanese himself, but he was anal-retentive about it and would nitpick people on any Japan-related topic. He slept on a futon of course and would regularly correct his roommates on the pronounciation: "It's pronouced 'foo-ton' not 'few-ton'". So when John got the puppy he named him Futon "pronounced 'few-ton' not 'foo-ton'". When Futon ran away it was a bit embarassing because you'd be out on the back porch shouting for a piece of furniture and mispronouncing it as well. We called him "Fewt" for short.

He would eat ANYTHING. You had to be really careful about dropping things on the floor because he'd eat it first and ask questions later. He loved going in the compost heap when he thought no one was looking too.

He had a big dog bark and a curmudgeony personality (he was around 11 years old when I met him). He'd stand on the back porch and bark gruffly at anything like a crabby little old man swearing. "Get ROFF my RUFFING yard you RUFFING squirrOFFS!!"

When his owners moved back to Toronto, Futon began to lose his hair to some mysterious ailment the vet couldn't figure out. John's wife Sylvie knit him a rainbow coloured tube to hide his nakedness. John and Sylve were living in a part of Toronto where quite a few film shoots would be going on in the summer. Futon would escape the yard and visit the craft services tents where he became something of a celebrity.

It was not long after that that he passed away. Now he is in doggy heaven which for Futon would be an endless compost heap with no one to yell at you for wallowing in it and eating the potato peels.

EL, I love the Pugs! I've been wanting one for years.

My wife's mom just got a new puppy (miniature Schnauser), and we've been having some intense puppy fever - looking into getting another pooch ourselves. Our research into Pugs made the breed sound really frightening from a health standpoint. The pups are so expensive, and you never know what ailments might be lurking down the road. I still think I'll get one eventually, but I'll have to wait until the kids are older and my wife goes back to work.

Anyway, I envy you with your Pug passel! :(

Bridget, Rocky and Emma are VERY active. They run around the house and generally cause wacky hijinx.

My mom got a stone garden pug statue at Hobby Lobby, and they think its a real pug. D= They bark at it every now and then, so cute.

Aside from Emma having a hernia and a heart murmur (which went away really quickly with no surgery), their health is pretty good.. Then again, we got them from a reputable breeder, so that's all well and good. I love my pugs, since they cuddle with me whenever I sit in a computer chair or on a couch. =]

My only gripe is their chewing, but they'll grow out of that eventually.

Hope Loki is healing well.

Hee hee! Kizzies! (And doggies!)

On my holiday I spent some time with my old pal Heidi, who really is getting old. She's seventeen now and moves a lot slower but also spends a lot more time as a lap cat, which is nice. However she also yacks up about once a week. On the night I was out with Ron, Nelson and Brian I didn't get home until about 1:30AM (what rabble-rousers we are!) and when I came in all the lights were out, naturally. I didn't want to disturb anyone, so I didn't turn any lights on. I kicked off my sandals at the door and tip-toed to my room and... *gish*... Heidi had left a "present" right outside the door of my room. I cleaned it up as best I could and Heidi came out to watch as if to say "Yep. I did that. Sorry old chum." :p

i dont think i ever showed a picture of huck, so here it is.
thre is also a picture of a dog we baby sat for my aunt for a few weeks.

huck is the shepherd that had to be put down.

baby is the pit-bull. my aunt rescued it. some people were going to kill it because it wouldn't fight. he's the sweetest thin on four legs.

-=Valkyre=-

aww
You guys have some of the sweetest pets I've ever seen...

zefo- don't you live where dog fighting is illegal? if not, I feel sorry for baby's previous owners' other pets. Pit bull Terriers don't deserve to be treated like that...

Anyway, here's some of my babies. (technicaly they're my mother's and her Boyfriend's, but I still treat them like my pets.)

Also, this'll prolly have a few posts inna row cause of how many she has/had...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/Cats_19_Sneakers_crate.jpg
Sneakers- My second cat, I got him when I was five after we moved to our third home. He's 13 now and has asthma that we can no longer treat as he has gained an immunity to his medication. I swear he is the cat from hell at times. He will yowl for hour on end and nothing can stop him. Not to mention he has a nasty disposition at times. Dont' ask about the name either, I was five...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/2Cats_16_Tinker_crate.jpg
Tinker- Tinker was a rescue from the animal shelter here and was so named because he was so skinny when we got him. Now, he weighs 20 pounds and once cost my mother seven hundred(canadian) for an operation, surprizingly, not to help him loose weight... I beleive he's about 9-11 years old.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/Cats_8_Arnie_counter.jpg
Arnie- This little girl was originally my mother's boyfriend's cat, who did NOT get along with other women as she was mistreated by an old girlfriend of my mother's boyfriend and took a few years to warm up to my mother an I. I've been told she's as old as Sneakers, but I'm thinking she's about a year younger. She's mild tempered but can never seem to get along with Sneakers or Tinker...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/Cats_11_Lucky_floor.jpg
Lucky- My grandmother's friends daughter was going to put down this poor cat because she had a german shepherd that would badly treat this cat and Lucky eventually went outside and REFUSED to come back inside, even though he stuck around the house. We later found out he had been found in winter here as a kitten with his tail -which he later lost- frozen in a block of ice, eartips -which he also lost- frostbitten and all of his bottom front teeth gone, likely from trying to chew himself free. He's a huge sweetheart, and wouldn't hurt a fly.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/2Cats_19_Molly_couch.jpg
Molly- Molly was rescued from an animal hospital and was later found out to have been a runt of her litter, so she's about half the size of any other cat, and is never getting any bigger. She's a 3 year old troublemaker, my mother's lost several christmas tree ornaments to her.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/2Cats_20_Skaia_chair.jpg
Skaia- A purebred border collie who was left out of her litter for some unknown reason. My Mother's boyfriend brought her home as a puppy about 5 years ago and never trained her properly...

Just Lucky and molly playing with each other.

This, is Jinx(or Jynx).
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/dragontalon666/my%20cats/Cats_23_Jynx_mat.jpg
Jinx was saved from a life on the streets and spent two wonderful years with my mother, her boyfriend and I. He was thought to be a 2-3 year old Turkish angora with beautiful white fur, frostbitten eartips and a skinny build. He had fallen severely ill and was taken to an animal hospital only for us to find out he had had Diabetes and we could do nothing about it and that he was likely closer to 10 years old than previously beleived. There was also a growth under his tongue that was identical to one another cat -that had been put down after being operated on in the same hospital that week] had had, which was tested positive for cancer. So, deciding to save Jinx from the misery and pain and inevitable death, he was put down in mid september and creamated.

It's our beloved wonderful cat Emo-bah when he was a kitten. He's a blue-point siamese and he was the best cat in the world. We loved him SO much. You can tell he was a character.. just look at that devilish look on his face. He was a delight for the nine years we got to live with him.

Valkyre,
I grieve with you on the loss of your loved one. It is no accident that Arnie had one of the best days of her life before passing. She wanted you and all who love her to remember her that way-animals do that.

This was given to me by a very caring veterinarian when I lost my beloved companion of 17 years, Jamie, a collie-shepherd mix. Many of you on the Board may be familiar with it. It helped me a great deal. Valkrye, I hope it helps you.

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge is a land of meadows,
hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not
with their special person who loved them on Earth.
So, each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring!
And this one suddenly runs from the group.

You have been seen, and when you and your special
friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and
embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again,
and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together,
never again to be separated.

Hi Nate! We met at MCCC. I was hanging out with David Petersen and Jeremy Bastian, but I had no comic of my own.

That's a team of sweeties you have! It's funny though that you have cats and rats.

All your rats look quite smart. Do they get along with the cats or do you have to supervise them quite closely?

I am sorry about Rita.

Ruta - We have to keep an eye on Ilsa when the rats are out. She's still really intrigued by them, while the other cats don't seem to really care anymore. And yes, they come across as pretty damn smart. They are all little escape artists. Also...thanks for the kind words about Rita.

Petersen - Probably a way to get to the fridge and/ or garbage...and eat it all. We could feed them 10 times a day and they would still give us the look like we're starving them.

Heh... Decided to finally contribute to this fantastic, thread.
So here is my zoo:

The first one. A boxer we call Baciar [it means "hooligan" in Lvovian polish dialect]. He's a grandpa now, allready 10 years old [boxers usually live up only to 8-9 years].
The pershian cat is called "Muppet" as his face allways reminded me of the thingies in the muppetshow. She's 4 years old.
The black cat is called... Well either just "cat" or "cobra", shes not only fat but also veeery old. She's around 12 now.
The last one [the white-orange one] is called "Jasiu" which is polish for "Ivan"[which I mostly call him], as in Ivan the cruesl, old Tzar of russia. It's somewhat funny as Ivan is truly the nicest pet I'v ever known or had.

Oh I should get that for my brother and sister-in-law.

Except they had a non-toilet-shaped automatic water thing like that, but their dog would just drink it ALL in one go, and then urgently have to pee soon afterwards. They can only put out as much water as he ought to drink in one sitting.

And they keep all the toilet lids down. :)

My cats don't like to sleep under the sheets... Ivan likes to sleep on my face which as you can imagine isn't very comfortable. [at least for me]

I have two doggies. Rocky is a big mutt, and he is mean to strangers. But he is so nice to us. My other is a fat pug named Max. We got him from my aunt who rescued him from getting put in the pound. He is very bold and always fights Rocky. He sometimes doesn't like getting petted, and we think it is because he was hit when he was a puppy.

We have three cats - Dash, Violet, and Jack Jack. You can guess what movie inspired their names :p We got Dash from our first landlords, they had basically abandoned him and left him to fend for himself outdoors, so we took him in. He's like a son to me :D He sleeps on my stomach at night, and nuzzles up to my face sometimes, especially if I'm ever sick or stressed. As goofy as it sounds, it's like he can there's a problem. He follows me everywhere around the house, too. It's more like having a dog than a cat. We adopted Violet and Jack Jack as kittens just before Christmas last year, right after we moved into our new place. They are brother and sister, and we were more than happy to take them both in. They were a handful at first, and still are in some ways, but they are adorable and we can't imagine life without them. They are all a part of our family :)

We are still waiting to capture the Perfect Yawning Cat Photograph of Loki. He is all black except for the roof of his mouth which has a kind of Rorschachesque black-and-white pattern.

I love Bella from here.
