View Full Version : DC's Blog Closes Comments, Gives Up On Even Trying To Talk to You Jerks

That headlines comes from this article over at Comics Alliance (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/03/17/dcs-blog-closes-comments-gives-up-on-even-trying-to-talk-to-yo/).
That's crazy, but sadly, it's not totally unexpected. Is this simply a case of internet fandom going too far or DC finally paying for never cracking down on troll-like behavior from too many of their regular commenters on their blog and boards? Or maybe this was DC reacting too strongly for what was nothing more than a small dust-up over a non-issue?

Well I was gonna comment against. But I have to admit with guilt that Civility should be enforced in an even handed manner. Ive' crossed the line and ive had the line cross me. I am tired of it as well. I think readers feel like they are pushed into a corner on both sides.
What happens when you love a story direction and someone else hates the direction??

They dont have an IPAD app for doing that yet.:evilsmile::tongue: And im not going to jail for assault because of a comic disagreement.
With my size..i can only get debates on comic forums..being 6 foot 4' 250. When i talk comics at a con people just nod..even when they disagree.

I actually disagree with that.
There are ways to have a discussion, a debate even, without acting up.
Personally, I think just shaking hands about it gets away from actually learning something from these types of discussions. There should be a mutual level of respect I'd hope, but just ending the discussion is just wasteful to me.
The reasoning behind one's opinions: it's what separates subjectivity and objectivity. And see how people respond to certain writing techniques, ideas, concepts, and characterizations are a great way to see what stuff resonates to audiences.
In short, things happen, and yes, for a bunch of comic books, people get way too carried away rather often. But that passion does mean something to me, these debates, even the murky, disturbing, and just plain juvenile are revealing as well as fascinating to me.

Superman VS the Flash? What a stupid thing to have a blog-ending flamewar about. It's clearly Road Runner that's the fastest.

I honestly don't understand a word of this post. "Pushed into a corner on both sides?"
What do you mean "What happens when you love a story direction and someone else hates the direction?" Nothing happens. Every day, billions of people form opinions and those opinions don't always match up with everyone else's.

Of course it's the Road Runner.
I got the impression from a few people that saw the deleted posts that it was an ongoing battle that spilled across multiple blogposts and that it got very vile of the sort that would have resulted in long bans or permanent banning on CBR.

the answer is OBVIOUS... The flash is faster, unless Superman is cheating by flying around the world and making time go backwards, in which case the Flash needs Batman's utility belt to win. D'uh. It's not like it's rocket surgery.

DC needed to either install draconian moderators or to shut down the message boards a long time ago. They're a massive corporate entity, for fuck's sake. How many complaints from moms do you think they've gotten over the years?

Most, maybe. But DC, by nature of their Warner Bros. connection, probably gets a lot of young kid traffic (or would like to, anyway). My son is too young to hit the message boards, but I'd sure hate for him to stumble across that wretched hive of scum and villainy while trying to find a neat Scobby-Doo link.

I remember a comedy spot in a TV series where the guy bets someone he's so fast he can run down a hill in back...in seconds. Well the guy is like..."Its on...$50 bucks says ya can't.."
The guy does the whole..."Get ready...get set...Go.." and the dude takes off as he stands there. "What the fuck dude...we gonna race ?'
"We already did man. I done ran there and back in seconds...like the Flash. Thanks for the money.."

In the same anthology, John McCrea drew the Hulk getting punched out by Mr Strong of the Mr Men.
There was also Thor VS Asterix and Obelix, the Punisher and Captain Haddock getting in a fight over a spilt drink, Lobo VS The Littlest Hobo, Jesse Custer getting John Constantine to stop moping by saying "KEANU REEVES", and Aunt May beating up the Sub-Mariner.
And sensible pairings but sod them.

while i don't know what the actual offending comments were, i am a believer in freedom of speech so unless it was something really offensive i think dc overreacted. i mean if they didn't like something they could have deleted the comment or just shut down the comments for that particular comic being discussed. but imho the dc source site, isnt really that interesting because i think there are so many great comic sites on the internet anyways, so its much ado about nothing imho.

Once your readership goes over a couple thousand a day, editing and deleting offensive comments turns into a job in itself.

I believe it was Mel Brooks who said something along the lines of "Tragedy is when I get a splinter, comerdy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."...
