View Full Version : Egocentric heros?

Anyone know any heros with a bit of an ego? I have a bit of a ego myself (what else do you expect to have when youre so awesome) and love it when a character has one since I can relate. Recently I started reading Booster Gold (DC) comics and find it hilariously fun because of the way he handles himself (even if everyone else doesnt like him) and I was wondering if there where any other characters with an ego.

Deadpool, if he counts as a hero Red Hulk

Johnny Storm during his early Strange Tales adventures was one heckuva vainglorious superhero, even though his heart was in its right place. His tiff with Spider-Man is legend.

Namor would be a good example IMO.

I particularly love the issue where he's conned into leaving the FF (after being convinced that he's being under-appreciated) to start a partnership with a crooked acrobat. Only in the 60's!

And if more men acted like this today, women might not be discovering that they're "lesbian" quite as much. ;)

Not a hero, but he is totally awesome, Dr. Doom. I believe you would like most of his 'grey' appearances rather than 100% moustache twisting villain. Well, and if you go for Doom 2099, he is pretty much more of a hero there, and equally awesome.

Striker, in Avengers Academy. Finesse, to a certain extent, as well.

The new Power Man kid has an amazingly huge ego. Makes me wish Iron Fist knocks some sense into him.

Namor, hands down the most egotistical hero of all. Sunfire was another one with a huge ego.

Spider-Man, almost consistently, though a third of his stories feature him realizing he's being self-centered and adjusting momentarily.

Noh-Varr was a cocky young bastard in the true Marvel style back when he appeared in his mini.

Nextwave was made of egocentricity.

Iron Man, though he wasn't Robert Downy Jr about it, has usually been pretty cocky and self-enamored.

Matt Murdock enjoys lying to his friends, making up imaginary brothers and wooing women as both himself and brother, killing his imaginary brother, and ripping off idiots for fifty bucks or thereabouts through that death. He's also a bit of a heel.

The man called, Nova, thinks highly of himself. The universe keeps reminding him he's destined to follow orders or flip burgers.

So, less jerks and more hot lesbian action? Win-win.

I've been told I have quite an ego myself. So I'm right there with you! I find myself more relateable to those characters as well. Iron Man has a huge ego. Also I love Booster Gold as well. Here are some I like in marvel. Quicksilver, Namor, Punisher, Gambit, Sunfire, Pete Wisdom, Doom, Reed, Johnny Storm and Eric O'Grady to name a few. Also I'm really digging Stryker. A new kid in Avengers Academy.

Namor and Tony Stark are the obvious choices (although Tony has calmed down a bit since the whole brain erasing thing).

Deadpool has an ego, but it's a facade. He puts on this bad ass, egotistical merc thing because he thinks it impresses people but also to deflect from his insecurities and hide the fact that he actually despises himself.

if Booster Gold is the prototype, you'd probably like U.S.Agent or G.I.Ant-Man...

Outside of comics I would look at The Stainless Steel Rat books by Harry Harrison.

Go over to DC and check out some Guy Gardner. Aint nobody got a bigger ego than old Guy, and most of the time he can back it up.

Yup. Nobody can take a punch and fall down flat like our Guy! And, sticking his foot in his mouth? Guy Gardner may not have invented it, but he refined it to an artform worthy or awards!

Well apart from Kyle, not very interesting ones. Hal is a cardboard cut out cliche of a superhero, but he's also a douche bag who macks teenagers. John Stewart is a by the book, stoic military type who is into architecture. Not very interesting IMO.

Guy is like one of those cops who tells his superiors to go F themselves if their beaurocracy and red tape gets in his way. He's awesome.

I'd throw Punisher in that mix as well.

He kills whoever he thinks deserves it and doesn't care what anyone thinks.

Not so much the '70s version (although that was his best stretch), but the '90s version of Adam Warlock, from Infinity Gauntlet right through his various series and miniseries, was written as a character who thought he knew best about everything and had (for a while) the power to back it up.

You mean Emerald Twilight? Yea i have read it. It's the only time... ever, i've found Hal Jordan to be something other than a cardboard cut out cliche of a superhero. Him having post traumatic stress disorder after what happened to his home town was pretty bold and interesting.

But it's all irrelevent now because along came Geoff Johns who then went and blamed it all on a stupid space bug.

Or if you meant The Road Back then yea Stewart was interesting. But Hal was still about as interesting as a stamp collector.

just for the helluva it, i'm going to disagree. i don't think Castle can be egocentric and be the Punisher. why? because he's clearly devoted his existence to a cause; the execution of justice. he's actually given up everything besides this pursuit.

Yes and no. He's his usual arrogant self, but you also get his POV so you see there's more to it than just "because I'm a king," and some self inspection. There's less grumpy and snark, which is how he's used when he's a guest star.
