My next guess -- and I think it might have actually fit all the clues? -- was going to be Wendell Vaughan (as Marvel Man). Nighthawk crossed my mind, but I was thinking of the Kyle Richmond one. Good contest today.

I didn't finish the individual copies; I bought the first three for my She-Hulk fix not knowing she'd hang around some more. Colossus was there too along with Blazing Skull and later Erik Josten and one other guy I can't remember. Guess I'll check my LCS for the others.

It was interesting, in a Joe Casey kind of way. The high concept was that Kyle Richmond was trying to put a squad of Defenders together, but he could never quite find the right mix. Each issue, more or less, had a different line-up.

I don't think it quite worked (it's hard to build a story around teams that don't fundamentally make sense), but it was a worthy effort. And I thought Joaquin was an interesting character. Shame he's fallen into limbo since the mini.
