I don't mind another AOA-esque future story line, although a event taking place in the present would be better IMO, but how have the sales figures been for New Mutants and X-Legacy? I ask b/c it seems odd that no X-men or UXM are part of the story arc if this is supposed to be the final huge event for the X-men (like the past 5 have been lol) and was wondering if this AOX was a way to boost sales on the above titles. I realize that the origins appeared in XLEG, but perhaps a little more history on this would help.
I'm just asking about the sales with these titles and the involvment of just these two titles, I'm not commenting on my opinion of this arc in depth just if the sales of the two titles were not doing well or not in a nutshell. I hadn't read too much into the previews to find out that it was a AOA type story line and if it will eventually play into current continuity, so was curious as to why X and UXM wasn't involved.

1) It does take place in the present.
2) It involves all the X-Men.

1. I was reading on wikipedia that it is out of the 616 universe so I was a little confused on that topic.
2. Of course, but my question is if its such a huge event why do no arcs take place in either X-men of UXm?

It's a big mystery how this universe came to be. Their are strong hints that it isn't even a universe, but just some kind of illusion.

I haven't read NM or LEG for a while, are there hints in previous issues about this universe or are we supposed to find out as the story progresses?

We're going to find out as the story progresses.
I didn't notice any hints in earlier issues, only Blindfold being cryptic about something coming in the issue before Age of X.

Two reasons:
1). AoX was originally an idea by Mike Carey it wouldn't be in his, I don't know what to call it, jurisdiction to use UXM and UXF when they already have writers and are in a middle of an arc.
2). Mike Carey has been on Legacy for about 5 years now, and the only reason he got to use NM was because Zeb Wells announced to marvel that he was leaving the book and there was an opening to use the title before the new writers stepped in.
It wasn't originally meant to be this big X-event, but the promotions of AoX have been really good and a lot of different people responded to it.

There are hints at the end of the last New Mutants issue (before Age of X) as well as the two issues prior of Legacy. It appears to be a combination of factors.
