View Full Version : X-Terminators Appreciation

The X-Books are about Soap Opera. They are about love, family, hope, tolerance (or lack there of), Crazy powers and outlandish heroes. Never has a team embodied these concepts better than the X-Terminators. Created in the X-Factor book, this team of wayward kiddos outshone the supposed stars of the X-Factor relaunch. So much so that they were eventually written out to attempt to get the spotlight back on the 05 characters.

The X-Terminators consisted of Rusty, Skids, Rictor, Boom Boom, Artie Maddicks, Leech, and Wiz Kid.
http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/2/29735/687909-skids13.jpg
Rusty was a ginger mutant from Oklahoma.
Skids was a blonde cute Morlock.
Rictor was a skinny fashion forward mutant from Mexico.
Boom Boom was a white trash thief living on the streets.
Artie was a deformed pink mute mutant with a diabolical scientist for a father.
Leech was a green morlock.
Wiz Kid was an Asian geek in a wheelchair.

Never has more love (or style) been put into the creation of a team. This is a thread to appreciate the greatness that was the X-Terminators.

If you are a hater. Get lost. I am serious. If you don't like them don't post here.

Thanks!

You are my hero. As much as I loved the O5 in X-Factor, I also loved the kids as well. Rictor quickly became my favorite and remains to this day. As a kid reading the books, I really connected with them.

I have a little guilt in admitting that I like them, but I do. I wish that they could come back together again - if only for a panel!! Really loved Skids for some reason, and wish that her plot with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Magneto would be brought up again.

Bio:
Rusty Collins was just a small town boy from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He joined the Navy at 16 in order to see the world (and I am sure he liked the outfits!). While stationed in San Diego he went to a bar with some guys from his unit. At the bar, this hussy/tramp/heaux named Emma Laporte hit one poor Rusty. He’d never been hit on by a girl (He’s a ginger.) and the shock of it caused him to manifest his mutant powers for the first time. He burned off her face just cuz she gave him a stiffy! As Paris Hilton would say “That’s Hot.” and this time it was literally hot. The poor confused kid was arrested after burining skeezy Emma Laporte’s face off, but he accidentally set fire to the officer attempting to place him into custody and then ran off. See when he gets nervous or excited he bursts into flames! That’s tough, since most 16 year old boys are both nervous and excitable!

X-Factor gets called out to help “hunt” him down. He battles them out of fear, but they manage to get him to safety and “adopt” him. He’s a fugitive from justice, just cuz he accidentally burnt a tramp’s face off. Can you believe that? Anyway, he hangs with X-Factor and trains and is totally abused by Jean Grey who he kinda has a crush on. Gingers Unite! All is fine until Freedom Force shows up and it’s the cool as hell version of the team! They want Rusty in custody and during the fight, Rusty meets a cute spunky morlock girl named Skids. He is instantly taken with her, Jean Grey who?, and they manage to escape Freedom Force. During the battle, Rusty is injured and Skids agrees to stay with X-Factor to take care of him. Thus begins the greatest love story Marvel Comics has ever known. For Real. Don’t question it.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/5551/597656-rustyandskids_super.jpg

Later as X-Factor adds more homeless castoff mutie kids, they form a trainee group and go by the Team Title of the X-Terminators. These fantastic group of kiddos (Leech, Artie Maddicks, Boom Boom, Taki, Skids and Rusty) joined with another group of fantastic kiddos (The New Mutants) in order to protect mutant babies during the Inferno debacle. Eventually both fantastic group of kiddos merge into one group and Jed was a HAPPY little fan boy. Eventually though, Freedom Force comes a’calling again and they attack Rusty and Skids. They manage to fend off the persistent menace of Freedom Force, but Rusty is hurt and has to go to the Hospital. Again, poor Rusty and Skids were attacked, this time at the hospital by unknown forces but this time they felt like they had no choice but to join the Mutant Liberation Front. They just needed the protection. Shortly after hanging out with the MLF, Stryfe brainwashes them and programs them to attack Cable and X-Force. The MLF get taken down hard and placed in prison. Rusty and Skids join them in jail, even though they were truly innocent victims. Sometime later, Rusty (and Skids), were kidnapped by the Mutant Hate Group known as the Friends of Humanity. X-Force manages to save them, but they were still under the influence of Stryfe’s brainwashing. When X-Force traveled to Avalon, Rusty chose to join Exodus and Magneto’s group of Acolytes. Skids did as well and both were deprogrammed by Magneto himself and finally free of Stryfe’s effects. Rusty and Skids were just happy to be themselves and be together and didn’t participate in many missions for the Acolytes. Again, they weren’t fully committed to the “Cause”, just making the best of where fate had landed them. It was on Avalon that Rusty encountered the mutant known as Holocaust, whom the Acolytes had found floating in space. They took him aboard and as they were reviving him he began a killing spree that would take Rusty’s life. Holocaust killed numerous Acolytes until Exodus took him on. Avalon crashed to Earth and the Acolytes were never a cohesive group like they were pre-Holocaust.

Recently Rusty showed up as a zombie in Selene's Necrosha Army. He was not seen to be eaten by her and is assumed to be wandering the Earth looking for Braaaaiiins!

Did you know?: In a What If, Rusty and Skids have a kid that Magneto tells them is the next stage of mutant evolution (Homo Ultima). This gets out and Aliens from across the galaxies converge to stop this threat. They brainwash Rusty and Skids to kill their child. Afterwards, Rusty and Skids leave the super hero business. It was revealed at the end of the issue, that Magneto had lied. The kid was just a regular mutant, but Mags had wanted to give his followers something to unite behind. Even in Alternate realities, Rusty and Skids just can’t get a break!

I never read them, not till I picked up the New Mutants. Its sad that this team never got the longevity of the other satellite teams. It would have made more sense for Cyclops to use this name for Wolverine's strike team instead of X-Force.

I appreciate the X-Terminators!

And dislike how they're treated now. With the exception of Leech, I suppose. He's pretty much the same.

Artie lost his powers, but is still mute. Rusty's dead, but briefly came back with the dumb name Firefist. Without Rusty as contrast, Skids lost a bit of her intrigue. Rictor's clueless. Boom-Boom's caught in a "how much of her experiences are in continuity" conundrum. And Wiz Kid is... well, I don't know where he is.

It's sad, really.

Boom-Boom is probably the best comics character ever created. She did for the 80's what Marrow did for the 90's and Stacy X did for the 00's except she lasted longer. Bring this girl back to the forefront where she belongs.

BTW, all of NeXtWave was in continuity. It's been confirmed as canon. It's even mentioned on panel.

Leech had learned how to control his powers. In the 1st issue, Marvel Girl was carrying Leech using her TK powers and she told Leech he did a good job dampening his power (or some such line).

Peter David has made Rictor into a fun, interesting, multidimensional character who's really entertaining to read about every month.

Boom-Boom was great in Nextwave, and pretty funny when she was crushing on Madrox in Fallen Angels.

Skids made for a great guest star in X-Treme X-Men.

Oh, and Rusty and Skids were pretty hilarious as brainwashed acolytes being led around proclaiming, "Stryfe will rescue us! The world will perish in flames!"

I think Peter David has ruined the character of Rictor.

Nextwave was an abomination, and one of those reasons was the way Boom Boom was used.

Rusty and Skids were not hilarious while being character abused.

Skids
Real Name: Sally Blevins
First appearance: X-Factor #7
Most recent appearance: Uncanny X-Men #491
Powers: Skids manifests a forcefield that protects her from harm. She can extend this forcefield to protect others as well. The field itself protects Skids from harm by covering her with a completely frictionless surface. When her forcefield is activated nobody can touch or hold her, bullets and other projectiles will not harm her. She glides over any surface she travels over, since she is not truly touching it.
Status: Working for the Man
Creator: Louise Simonson and Jackson Guice

Bio
Sally Blevins has had a hard knock life. For real, Annie doesn’t have anything on her. Her powers manifested when her abusive dad came home to his wife allowing Sally to try on some Pearls. Maybe Pops wanted the pearl necklace for himself or maybe he just didn’t want Sally to wear jewelry. But he’d had enough and beat her mom to a pulp and then tried to start on her. Her powers kicked in on the first punch. Her dad was so freaked out and disgusted by his mutie daughter that he took off. Unfortunately, her powers didn’t kick off so easily for a novice and she was unable to dial the phone for help or pick up her mom’s broken body. Everytime she tried to grab hold of her she just slid from her hands. Sally’s mom died a short time later as the young girl could only sit beside her and watch. After her mom’s death, Sally became a street kid and eventually took to the abandoned New York Subway Tunnels that the Morlocks inhabited. She became the Morlock known as Skids, but was treated as an outcast because of her pretty looks. The morlock known as Masque tried numerous times to disfigure her face and body as was his cruel custom, but Sally’s powers kept his attempts from working. So she was basically an outcast among outcasts.

Sally met Rusty Collins in the middle of a huge battle between the ginger haired teen and Freedom Force. The two kids were attacked by a mutant hating mob and Sally’s powers kept them safe from harm. They also found out that Rusty’s flames could not harm her. The two fled to the Morlock tunnels, only to be chased by Freedom Force. X-Factor stepped in and saved them both and Sally decided to stay with them since Rusty had been injured in the fire fight. Lucky for her, since shortly afterwards, the Marauders massacred the majority of morlocks.

Rusty and Skids fell in love and became the greatest love story that Marvel has ever known. When Masque asked Skids to return to the morlock tunnels with the rest of the survivors, she decided to stay with Rusty. This infuriated him/her (Masque is a huge tranny) and he swore revenge on “the pretty little girl.” During this time, Jean Grey was training both Rusty and Skids in their powers. And boy was she a drill sergeant! During a training exercise Sally’s pearls broke and she couldn’t managed to pick up the individual pearls. Frustrated and pushed to the emotional brink, Sally ran off to rejoin the morlocks. Rusty followed her and they had a huge battle with Masque. Then Emma Laporte, the trampy hooker that Rusty had burned the face off showed up in the news and Rusty took her to Masque to “fix”. Masque bargained with Rusty for basically a version of that movie Face Off with John Travolta. He’d mess up Rustys and fix the trampy burned chick. Masque twisted Rusty’s face up and Skids lost it. Red Hair and an Ugly Face, NO WAY! She almost killed Masque but during the melee, she finally mastered her powers and was able to “turn off” her forcefield for the first time. Rusty also got his pretty face back! YAY! Emma Laporte stayed in the morlock tunnels and dated Qwerty for a while.

X-Factor ended it’s trainee program shortly after the book became a huge hit and Skids went to boarding school. Inferno began and Skids got back into the super-hero game to help save Artie and Leech. The former trainee kids called themselves the X-Terminators and teamed up with the New Mutants to fight off the demons attacking New York. Shortly afterwards, the two teams merged and Jed was a happy camper. They (Sally and Rusty) got separated from the gang when the New Mutants went to Asgard and Rusty was ONCE AGAIN attacked by Freedom Force. They were captured and both put in prison. Rusty for the face burning incident and Skids for resisting arrest. They broke out of prison to stop a nefarious plot by Nitro (the dude who blew up Stamford). They were going to tell the world about Freedom Force’s plans as well as save the good citizens from Nitro. Nitro was about to Splode when Skids contained him in one of her forcefield. She managed to take out his destructive energy, but the strain really hurt her. She was put in the hospital and Mystique spun the media to make it look like Rusty and Skids were helping Nitro rather than stopping him. The news started to report that the Mutant Liberation Front, a mutant terrorist organization, was working with Rusty and Skids and that caused the MLF to come to their hospital room and find out what was going on. This caused the police and the MLF to get into a huge shoot em up match and Rusty and Skids were stuck in the middle. Rusty got shot and the duo had no choice but to escape with the MLF. This is where it all started to go pear shaped for the two star crossed lovers. Stryfe, the nefarious leader of the MLF, brainwashed them into being as ruthless and barbaric as the rest of the MLF. They battled the New Mutants/X-Force and the X-men. Seeing her former friends did not shock Sally out of her conditioning and she even broke Boom Boom’s jaw! Eventually the MLF was captured and Sally ended up in prison again with Rusty. The Friends of Humanity, a human based terror group, had plans to get the two and publicly make examples of them, but they were rescued by X-Force before they could be killed. Still under Stryfe’s brainwashing, the two didn’t fit with their old friends and when they had the chance to join the Acolytes, they took it. Magneto finally undid the conditioning that Stryfe had put into place and the two managed to be happy for a while. They didn’t fit well with the Acolytes, but they were together, in their right minds, and safe. They knew they didn’t fit in with the Acolytes and had been looking for an exit strategy, but hadn’t found the right way out and at least they were finally safe! Or so they thought. Holocaust, Apocalypse’s son, was taken aboard Avalon, the Acolytes headquarters in space and proceeded to destroy the satellite space station and in the process killed Rusty. I know. It’s okay, you can cry too.
http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/2/29735/687916-skids20.jpg

Sally left the super hero or superhuman terrorist biz and decided to enroll in college in Colorado. She wanted to be a normal chick, but when X-Force came to visit, they mucked it up for her and she ended up being outed as a mutant when the MLF attacked. She was next seen working as a member of Roberto Dacosta’s X-Corporation office in Los Angeles. After M-Day, Sally joined the remaining mutants back at the Mansion only to be again enthralled by another powerful mutant. She went all cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs over him, but in the end he was defeated and at least she wasn’t made into a Horseman or something. She just got glamoured by him and didn’t help fight him.
http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/5/56503/1351010-skids.jpg
She was next seen as a Morlock again AND under the direction of Masque of all people. Fanboys around the world rebelled against this idea, but Ed Brubaker cleverly revealed that she was a SHIELD spy, working to take down mutant terror cells from within. Masque was defeated with her help and all was right with the world. Skids is back on the side of the angels and working for the man. Well, maybe, at the end of the arc she was seen feeding information to Magneto in a dangling storyline that was never followed up on.

Guys, I read the X-Terminators mini today and loved it. I take back not liking Artie and Leech, they were so adorable (and Leech in particular has a pretty sucky life--the New X-Men can learn a thing or two).

I can't stand Wiz Kid though. He can go lose a battery.

It was wonderful. She was smart, sneaky, and in charge. He should write her mini.

It was my favorite part of Bru's entire run.

I liked her dress, but the yellow was kind of bland on her. She needs more hipster accessories and some red or pink up in there.

Boom Boom
Real Name: Tabitha Smith
First appearance: Secret Wars II #5
Powers: Tabby has the mutant ability to create time bombs of combustive energy. Generally these have shown up as little balls of plasma and at their earliest incarnations had to be counted down to splode. She’s lately been shown to be able to shoot plasma without the balls. That said she still has more balls than most of her peers.
Status: Shopping
Creator: Jim Shooter

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/3/36512/1039230-boom.png

Bio
Tabby has had a tough life. She was raised trailer park trash in Virginia by a dad who beat her and a step-mom who enabled him. Both parents were rabidly anti-mutie and took it out on her for not being a flat-scan. When she got tired of her dad’s crap, she placed some timebombs into his TV dinner (LOL yes.) and sploded them all over his favorite wife beater. He responded by trying to “Beat the mutant gene out of her”. That was the end of Tabby’s time at home in the trailer park. She became a small time thief to scrape up enough cash to get to NYC. Before she got there, she ran into everyone’s favorite Members-Only wearing powerhouse, the Beyonder. Thus began one of the strangest friendships ever known to comics. Both were suicidal at times. It was totally bizarre. In the end, Tabby turned on Beyondy and he lost his faith in humanity or something. No one remembers what really happened in Secret Wars II.

She lived on the streets and evidently killed a dude. Eventually Tabby began to work for the Vanisher as a member of his band of thieves known as the Fallen Angels. She did some time with Vanisher as her Crimelord, mostly as a pickpocket and petty thief until Iceman and Beast came looking for Vanisher in the pages of X-Factor. They found Boom Boom instead and she put a timebomb down the back of Iceboy’s shirt. These two venerable mutants chased her across the City until they were finally able to nab her and make her cry. Poor Tabby had a crush on of all people Iceman. Yea (I know). They took her into their fold as a member of their mentorship program. She, along with Rusty and Skids, became the backbone of what would eventually become the X-Terminators.

At some point, BoomBoom hooks up with Ariel and rejoins the Fallen Angels. There she meets Roberto Da Costa and Warlock as well as other mutants (Chance, Siryn, Multiple Man, etc). They basically binge on Fast-food and lounge in Beat Street Club (Their hideout). Then they go into space and Chance turns from a Lesbian into liking Sunspot. (I know). Anyway, that’s a whole other story.

Boom Boom rejoins the X-Terminators just in time to save them from the Right, temporarily, and meet Rictor. Tabby’s able to talk him out of committing suicide (Anyone seeing a pattern for Ric?). They eventually got rescued by X-Factor (not the new boring version, but the 05 version) and return to Ship. They had only just arrived when Ship got re-taken by Apocalypse and they had to battle to save Ship from itself. This was the solidification of the crew as a true team. They went on numerous cool adventures during this time period, but their most fun story involved becoming celebrities and getting lots of Christmas presents. Tabby, in true white trash fashion, was totally pissed that the rest of the X-Terminators decided to give all the gifts to the poor and the needy. Eventually, the X-Terminators stole the book from the X-Factor team and editorially were sent to boarding school. That didn’t stop them from saving the world (and the New Mutants) when Inferno struck. From then on, the sort of merged with the New Mutants. Providing fun and levity to the gang of angsty teen mutants. At one point Boom Boom blew a magical Atlantean horn and almost caused the Kraken to eat the surface world. (I know). While a member of the New Mutants, Boom Boom became embroiled in the most bizarre love triangle ever. Somehow, Rahne, (who Tabby hated, rightly so) wanted to hump Ric’s leg and Ric briefly wanted to shake Tabby’s world. That morphed into Ric choosing Rahne over Tabby. And Tabby being all love-struck over Ric. (I know). Then it turned into Boom Boom being nurse maid to Rahne. (I know). Thankfully, Cable entered and Rahne was quickly written out of the book. Cannonball and Tabby soon started dating and tried to rival Rusty and Skids in the perfect couple competition. He was so wholesome and she was so fantastic, that it almost worked.

New Mutants became X-Force after ditching Rahne. Boom Boom became Boomer. (I know). Boomer was the heart and soul of X-Force and she thrived in the new more pro-active squad. She survived Feral and the drama that was Moonstar being an MLF’r in stride. When Sam was killed and resurrected and believed to be an External, she was like “I love you Boo”. She even survived getting her jaw broken by her former BFF, Skids. She was more competent in pink than she had ever been written. She was in short, awesome. She also began to grow out her hair. It was super cute.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/3/33806/703232-46001_super.jpg

Somehow, when X-Force ended up hanging out the X-Mansion and Cannonball got promoted to the X-Men, Boomer started feeding prisoner Sabretooth like he was a house-cat. (I know). In order to get her to stop feeding the Lion milk, Cannonball started to give her the cold shoulder. Desperate for attention, Tabby reached out to her dad. In a completely random event, formerly abusive Pops ends up not being such a bad guy this time around, but he gets put in the hospital in a coma by a new Hellfire club attack. Or something, I was barely reading that plotline. (You know). When Sabes tried to kill her and ended up eating Dragon Lady Psylocke, nobody thanked Tabby for setting up Betsy to die. Instead Tabby shut herself off and a week later emerged with all her hairs cut off in a “Sinead O’Rebellion” move. She was now known as Meltdown. (I know). The haircut was cute. And she finally shed her need to be taken care of and was all fierce and stuff. She’d always been fierce in my opinion, but now she was 90’s Fierce! (To the X-Treme!). But honestly, X-Treme nonsense aside, the book was better than ever. It had found it’s footing again and Tabby was all kinds of boss. I guess part of the new persona was to lose your taste in men, cuz Tabby tricked it with Roberto shortly after getting her new haircut. Sam, her wayward absentee boyfriend, had been mostly a douche ever since the Sabretooth thing, but it was still fairly ice cold of Tabs. But who in the 90’s hadn’t slept with their douche-bag boyfriend’s best friend? (You know).

After that, Cannonball rejoined the team, cuz he’s a glutton for punishment. Then Warren Ellis took over and I’m fairly certain the whole team wore eye patches. Tabby and Sam did the rekindle thing for a while. (With eye patches on Ke$ha style!) But it didn’t last long. X-Force broke up and Tabby went into limbo. Tabby teamed up for several adventures with Cable and others and brought joy into fan-boys hearts as a member of the Mutant Underground (I wonder if she tricked it with Shortpack?). But mostly was not in the X-Books for half a decade or so, before showing up in a Warren Ellis book that rocked all kinds of socks.

NextWave, was a new kind of book, and Tabby was a new kind of Boom Boom. She grew out her hair and chewed gum and shopped and we loved everybit of it. She trademarked the “Splode”, “OH NOES”, and “ZOMG” phrases and was rejuvenated by the series. She was no longer Meltdown and no longer angsty over Sam. It was his loss. And it honestly was his loss. Cuz he re-hooked up with Lila Gross Cheney or Iceman. Whatever, who cares.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/1/14859/849765-like__zomg__by_tabbykat.jpg

After NextWave was cancelled, Boom Boom was kidnapped by the Leper Queen and almost killed and the internet almost cracked in half. But she wasn’t killed thankfully. Now she hangs out on Utopia and shops in San Francisco and beats up villains and stuff. She’s due for a new codename (I know). and a new series.

Did you know?: Tabitha Smith has had 5 Codename changes since she was introduced. Timebomb, Boom-Boom, Boomer, Meltdown, and Boom Boom. She’s totally ace no matter what you call her and that’s pretty cool.
Also, my six year old thinks that X-Men Evolution Boom Boom is “totally hot.” Which is worrisome. cuz she had bizarre hair in that toon.

That was only during Necrosha. He was publicly known, so he never bothered with a nickname. I think he thought about using one, which might be where Firefist actually came from, but he never actually used it.

Real Name: Taki Matsuya
First appearance: X-Terminators #1
Powers: Taki has the mutant ability to “techno-morph”. Basically he can take plastic, metal, and glass and psionically rearrange them into inventions. His inventions are not generally bound by the laws of physics. He’s like Forge but with one less working leg and not Storm’s soulmate.

Creator: Louise Simonson

Bio
Taki is introduced as a crabby genius kid in a wheelchair. He was in a car accident that left him paralyzed. He also has dyslexia and has isolated himself from everyone else at the St. Simon’s Academy where he is attending school. He’s anti-social, angry, and a “Computer Genius”. I have no idea why fan-boys didn’t take to him, since he basically would fit right in at CBR’s X-Boards.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/9345/404335-164624-wiz-kid_super.jpg

Taki initially hates Artie and Leech when they arrive at St. Simon’s after the 05 abandoned them at the boarding school’s doorsteps. The 05 are seriously the best parents/childrearer’s ever. CPS should monitor them. He tried to show off how “Kool” he was by fronting on the two boys. He even brags that his “souped-up double-wheelie-racier-chair” was better than walking. O.K. Anyway, eventually Leech’s powers make his inventions fail and him feel even more like a clown. So he decides to hate on poor Leech even more. Taki never knew that he was a mutant, he mistakenly believed that he was just talented.

During the pre-lude to Inferno, Taki realizes that some Demon dudes were peeping on Leech and Artie. He decides to save them even though he dislikes them. So he techno-morphs his “souped-up double-wheelie-racier-chair” into a “Goblin Buster”. But it falls apart the closer he gets to Leech and he fails miserably. At this point Leech informs the “genius” that he’s a mutant and that he should stay away from him if he wants to use his powers. The demons take Artie and Leech away.

Taki then rounds up the rest of the X-Terminators and they go on a Rescue mission. Taki promptly gets himself captured by N'astirh. Taki, Leech and Artie are about to be killed when Taki makes a deal with the “Devil”. He does some computer stuff that amps up N’astirh’s spells. Or something, it was kind of a “Huh. What?” part of the mini-series. Anyway, they beat N’astirh’s plan and Taki had a lot to do with it. His technomorph abilities allowed him to stop the techno-organic virus. I dunno, It was pre-internet and the over-use of the word “techno” has gotten me nostalgic for that song “Smack My Bitch Up”. That’s good techno in my opinion.

After Inferno, Taki and Leech/Artie return to St. Simons Academy/obscurity. The trio have some other adventures that like 14 people read. One where Taki designed a space ship for joy-riding. Another where they battle a mean grandmother in the court of public opinion and WIN!

Did you know?: Ultimate Taki was a member of The Defenders. Sadly all they did was make fun of him and call them their “Little Wheely Man”. It was later revealed that they only had him join to get tax breaks for including a disabled hero. Poor Taki.

DID YOU KNOW...she once STARRED in a comic, guest starring Spider-Man and sponsored by K-Mart?

Artie
Real Name: Artie Maddicks
First appearance: X-Factor #2
Powers: Artie had various psionic powers. He is unable to speak so his primary power was to project his thoughts into visual pictures. It was super cute. He also was shown to be able to track others via mindlink, cause mental/physical paralysis, and showed limited telepathy.
Status: Hanging out with the Fantastic Four and his BFF Leech
Creator: Bob Layton and Jackson Guice

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/2/26874/1188323-maddicksartie5.jpg

Bio
Artie debuted as the mutie kid of Scientist Carl Maddicks. Maddicks had previously tried to steal some scientific formula from Beast (LOL Beast is not a good scientist, so that makes Maddicks an even crummier one). Carl Maddicks failed at the theft attempt and was almost killed by Factor Three Lite (The Secret Empire) for failing. Somehow Carl survived and it was revealed that he had this huge headed bright pink mute child. Artie was completely awesome and managed to escape having his origin tied to Beast. Artie’s dad kidnapped Beast by hiring a merc. Beast was put to work finding a cure but X-Factor showed up in time to stop Beast from finding a cure for cuteness. Artie’s dad sends Artie away with the 05 so that he isn’t shot by his own company’s security. Then he goes crazy and starts shooting up the place. He’s promptly killed and Artie sees his death via mental projection. It was super sad. Bright Pink big headed kids should never be that sad.

Through this sadness, Artie meets up with Rusty and Skids though. And was shown that true love does indeed exist. Rusty went missing at some point and Artie could track him via his mindlink with the firestarter. This search took him into the Morlock tunnels and to his soulmate, Leech. He also got adopted by Annalee. He was officially a Morlock. That wasn’t to last though. Shortly afterwards, the Marauders killed most of the Morlocks. Annalee was the second parent for Artie to lose in less than a year.
Artie had numerous adventures with the X-Terminators and the 05 until X-Factor was editorially mandated to get sort of boring and Artie was shipped off to St. Simon’s Boarding school. The 05, being the great foster parents that they were, never once even checked on them. At St. Simon’s Artie became friends with Taki (LOL) and took numerous rides on his Souped up Wheelie Chair. Taki eventually realized he was a fifth wheel (no pun intended) and bowed out gracefully when Artie and Leech moved into the Generation X team’s headquarters.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/5586/540539-a2.jpg

While at the Massachusetts Academy, Artie and Leech lived in a tree house in the Danger Grotto. Cuz Emma didn’t think they were fit to sleep in her dorms? After the Onslaught debacle “killed” all the non-mutant heroes, the Artie/Leech duo became a trio again when Franklin Richards joined up. These three along with Howard the Freaking Duck and the Man-Thing (LOL) and some other broads that I can’t remember their names would form a team called the Day Dreamers. They had a couple of neat adventures before Franklin’s boring parents would return and decide to actually parent. Scott/Jean/Maddie/Logan/Colossus/etc. should take some lessons from them.

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/5586/540540-a3.jpg

Artie would hang with Generation X for the remainder of that series. Eventually, dreams die and Generation X was cancelled. Artie and Leech went to live with M’s dad in Monaco. And as Mylie Cyrus would say “that was pretty cool.” Artie wasn’t mentioned again for like a decade. Then it was mentioned that Artie lost his projection powers on M day. Super sad day. I know. Artie would get invited to Franklin Richard’s 4th 9th Birthday party and get asked to stay. I think Franklin’s sister Valeria has a crush on him. I hope Leech doesn’t cut her. He is a Morlock after all. Valeria evidently built him a really super ugly hat that allows him to project his thoughts via pictures again. You’d think if they could build that, they could figure out a way to let him speak again. But whatevs.

Did you know?: Artie generally wears hats. It’s not because he is a fashion maven though, it’s because he has a totally deformed head. My favorite hat he wore was a sauce pot.

Skids was also the planned star of NYX before it changed creative teams!

I loved Tabby in X-Force, but I LURVED her in Nextwave. It was a big change for the character, but I think it was the best way to bring her into the 2000's (the Counter X stuff definitely wasn't it).

Btdubs I hated Taki. Not only was he obnoxious, but I can't get behind powers that enable you to build stuff.

Here's something I've been wondering. I lost track of Rusty after X-Terminators, so I don't know what all happened to him before he died, but did he ever actually have the codename Firefist, or was that just some new thing for Necrosha?

He never had a code name.

Read later posts, it's been proven he did. He may not have used it, but he was Firefist to Marvel. As early as X-Factor 22 and as recently as Necrosha he was called Firefist.

Wrong that was just his nickname not his code name. Might as well say that Nova's code name was Bucket Head, Cycles was Cyke, Boom Boom was Boomer (pre Sabretooth), Iron Man wad Shell Head, Storm Wind Rider, etc. Nicknames aren't code names.

Boom Boom did go by Boomer as a codename. . . isn't that all codenames are, nicknames?

yes I know. I said pre Sabretooth but I got that wrong. She didn't go as Boomer until after that xover that revealed Stryfe to be a clone. Before then her code name was Boom Boom buwt her friends nicknamed her Boomer.

Wrong. Since when does a evil organization like the Right refer to someone by a nickname?

It was also listed by the villains as "Firefist" at the same time as the others were listed as "Boom Boom", "Rictor", and "Skids". Again...nickname? No.

Also, it was obviously shown as his codename in Necrosha.

Washout also has another point...what's the difference between a codename and a nickname? Wouldn't Skids be more of a nickname than codename? She had it before joining any team. It's not like any of their names were "official". They didn't have to be assigned a name or apply for one or anything.

Sorry buddy but pre Necrosha Rusty was always known as Rusty and not Firefist. Even the '80s Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe had him listed as Russell Collins. In the '90s, Marvel Age compiled a list of all living mutants in the MU. They listed Rusty as Russell Collins, not Firefist.

I am dumbfounded on the way you completely ignore evidence to the contrary.

Yes, he always went by Rusty...we know this. That doesn't change the fact that he was technically Firefist. Trust me, Marvel considers his codename Firefist.

But hey, if you want to believe something different, that's your choice. Have fun!

Just because we assume he's right, doesn't mean he always is, lol.

I think it's been proven that Magneto was not right on account of he switches teams every time he's reintroduced. He can't even make up his mind enough to come to any kind of conclusion.
