I'll use this thread to post links to all those wacky news stories that get a minimum of response here.
First up is what happens when a particular fetish goes too far. (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=583&ncid=583&e=1&u=/nm/20040603/od_nm/crime_britain_fetish_dc)

Here's one of my recenty favorites:
MYSTERY HAND FALLS FROM SKY
June 1, 2004 -- A boat party in an exclusive area of Long Island Sunday night was interrupted - when a severed human hand mysteriously dropped out of the sky onto the deck of a boat, police said yesterday.
The bizarre incident occurred in the water just off the Lawrence Village Marina, where a group of boats had gathered to have a party.
One owner was in the cabin when "he heard a noise, goes out to check and finds the hand on the rear deck of the boat," said Nassau Detective Sgt. John Azzata. "At this point, we don't have a clue where it came from. It's a mystery."

Old news. These weapons date back to at least WWII. The OSS issued 'em to agents; doubtlessly other agenies and countries had similar devices.

From the police column of The Union (Grass Valley, Calif.), June 25, 2004: "A (caller) reported that he heard someone screaming and went outside to find a woman lying in the street. When he asked her if she was all right, the man reported, she started yelling at him, ran inside a residence and appeared to be smashing things inside. Police contacted the woman, who said she was just having an argument with herself." [The Union, 6-25-04]

Sorry, I can't help laughing hysterically over *that* one.
However, I don't think the arson charge should stick---unless he was intentionally using the flaming pants to burn down his own home.

Baby Improving After Extra Head Removed
Tue Feb 22, 9:50 AM ET Health - Reuters
CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian baby who underwent a 13-hour operation to remove an extra head will soon be able to breathe on her own, a doctor treating her said Tuesday.
Ten-month-old Manar Maged was suffering from one of the rarest birth defects -- craniopagus parasiticus -- a problem related to that of conjoined twins linked at the skull.
The head that was removed from Manar in the operation which ended early Saturday had developed no body, and was capable of smiling and blinking, but not independent life.
Doctors have already said that Manar could move all her limbs and showed no signs of paralysis after the operation in a children's hospital in Benha, near Cairo.
"At the moment only about 15 percent of her breathing is through the ventilator and in about 48 hours we will switch the ventilator off," Abla el-Alfy, a consultant in pediatric intensive care, told Reuters.
Alfy, part of the team of 13 Egyptian doctors who carried out the operation, said it was too early to say whether Manar could have suffered brain damage.
"In four days or less we will do a ... scan of her brain to see what the situation is," Alfy said.
Craniopagus parasiticus occurs when an embryo begins to split into identical twins but fails to complete the process. One of the conjoined twins fails to develop fully in the womb.
Professor Lewis Spitz, a leading expert on conjoined twins at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London said the vital question for Manar was whether brain tissue and blood vessels were shared between the two heads.
He said it was critical that the blood flow away from the surviving twin was not interfered with during separation.
Spitz did not know how many cases of craniopagus parasiticus have occurred or the number of attempted separations. He said the fact Manar survived is a big achievement in itself.
"It must be quite rare. In about 2 percent of conjoined twins the heads are fused," he said, adding that an incomplete conjoined twin joined at the head is even rarer.
He said the incidence of live born conjoined twins is about one in 200,000.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- When Rachel Dunham took out a restraining order against her boyfriend, she didn't expect to be marrying him a short time later. So instead of honeymooning in Mexico, Rodney Tomsha sits in the Spokane County Jail, accused of violating the order by getting within two blocks of Dunham.
He tried to persuade a Spokane judge last week to lift the restraining order, but the judge refused.
The couple were married last Thursday in nearby Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Spokane police Detective Stephanie Barkley said.
Police received a tip about a Saturday wedding reception at a Spokane mansion, waited until the reception was over and then arrested Tomsha, 49, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.
Dunham, 25, had obtained the order after two reports of domestic violence were investigated by Barkley last year. In addition, Dunham was arrested on June 17 for investigation of domestic violence against Tomsha, police said.
Another court hearing seeking removal of the protection order was scheduled for Wednesday.

Pat and Joe Posey, a Maryland couple, have "raised" a Cabbage Patch doll as their son, Kevin, for 19 years and, according to a report in The Sun newspaper, they prefer him to their real child, an adult daughter named Vicky. The Poseys take Kevin with them everywhere, they talk to him and he responds (through a voice Joe puts on for him). Kevin has his own 1,000 square-foot playroom in the couple's home, a full wardrobe and a savings fund for when he goes to college. Joe says Kevin's favorite hobby is fishing, and father and son go on frequent trips to a pond near their home.

Willie Windsor, 54, of Phoenix has for several years lived as a full-time baby in a home full of oversized baby furniture. He wears diapers and bonnets, sucks on a pacifier, eats Gerber's baby food and carries a rag doll with him everywhere. And according to a profile in the Phoenix New Times in June, the diaper is not just a prop. Windsor refuses to use the restroom, and even chained his bathroom door shut to avoid the temptation.

Real press release:
Energy drinks get all the hype these days, but a healthier alternative with an enormous potential is hitting the shelves in the sizzling nutraceutical beverage market. The growth in nutraceutical beverages has been truly amazing, with formulation from Steven Seagal, who can now can add "Energy Drink formulator" to a list of talents that already includes veteran actor, singer/songwriter, guitarist, Aikido black belt and master herbalogist.
Maintaining an unrelenting schedule that would tire younger entrepreneurs, the 54-year-old Seagal has just completed two movies, "Into the Sun" and "Submerged." His album, "Songs from the Crystal Cave," released earlier this year, has already hit the pop charts in Europe. Lightning Bolt Energy Drink(TM) is the result of Seagal's travels in Asia in search of the botanicals believed to keep many locals disease-free for life. Seagal says he discovered the benefits of Asian Cordyceps (one of the most rare and treasured botanicals used in Chinese and Tibetan medicine for thousands of years) while researching immune builders in Asia. It promotes energy, vitality and longevity. Other unique ingredients of the drink include the Tibetan Goji Berry, a powerful anti-oxidant and a juice concentrate with a patented process that contains naturally occurring policosanols. Policosanols have been shown in clinical studies to lower cholesterol.
Lightning Bolt is the first energy drink made from 100% natural juice. It is all natural with no sugar added and also contains vitamins B3, B6, B12 and B5. "I have traveled the world creating this drink; there is none better that I know," says Seagal, who frequented Tibet and Japan in the 1960s and 1970s while learning Buddhism, martial arts and herbalogy. "I have included in this drink everything I could to strengthen the body."
The album bit is a bonus. Those wacky Euros and their musical 'taste.'

Swedish library launches 'borrow a person'
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AFP) — If you're one of those people who thinks all lesbians are sexually frustrated or all animal rights activists aggressive, then a Swedish library project that allows you to "borrow" a real live human being rather than a book may provide some useful insight.
The Living Library project will enable people to come face-to-face with their prejudices in the hopes of altering their preconceived notions, Ulla Brohed of the Malmoe Library in southern Sweden told AFP.
"You sometimes hear people's prejudices and you realize that they are just uninformed," she said.
This weekend, nine people, including a homosexual, an imam, a journalist, a Muslim woman and a gypsy, will be available at the Malmoe Library for members of the public to "borrow" for a 45 minute conversation in the library's outdoor cafe.
"Maybe not all journalists are know-it-all and sensationalist, just unafraid and curious. Maybe not all animal rights activists are angry and intolerant, but intelligent and committed," she said.
The nine "items" on loan were not hard to find, Brohed said, but admitted that they would be paid "a small sum" for their efforts.
If the project is a success, the Malmoe Library may run it again later this year.

In India, a kiss comes with a cost
By The Associated Press
NEW DELHI — India may be the land of the Kama Sutra, the ancient treatise on sex, but public displays of affection remain strictly taboo in the country's hinterlands, as an Israeli couple found out.
They were fined 500 Indian rupees ($11) each for embracing and kissing after getting married in a traditional Hindu ceremony in the northwestern Indian town Pushkar, the Asian Age newspaper reported yesterday.
The Israeli Embassy in New Delhi confirmed the incident and identified the couple as Alon Orpaz and Tehila Salev, who decided to get married while visiting India.
The Asian Age said priests at Pushkar's Brahma temple were so outraged when the couple smooched as hymns were still being chanted that they filed a police complaint.
A court in Pushkar then charged them with indecency and ordered them to pay the fine or face 10 days in prison, the newspaper reported. The couple decided to pay, it said.
"We will not tolerate any cultural pollution of this sort," the newspaper quoted a priest, Ladoo Ram Sharma, as saying.
