Ok, what can i say about Doom 3....
It's fricken beautiful when you get it running, it auto set to high, but it slowed down a couple times, so i set it to medium and...it looked exactly the same....not sure why...anyway, probably the best looking game i've ever seen in my life.
Atmosphere, this game has it in fricken buckets. It's actually creepy, from the lighting, to the noise, to the ...eveyrhting really. Things actually attack you from everywhere, claw their way out of ceilings, burst through doors, jump off tables.
The most amazing thing in the game thus far (im like.....ive bene playing for about 40 minutes) was when the action really kicks in.
Im talking to a guy, theres about 5 tv screens with 5 different things going on, the lights start flickering, the guy to my right is freaking out, then the screens all show something different, with sound coming through, my little radio has someone talking to me, flaming skulls start flying around...and this is all in game, no cg. I almost died because i was watching the tv screens, just incredibly busy and pretty.
And, speaking of cut scenes, there are none, they flow seamlessly with the game. And unlike some other games that do this, it actually looks good.
It also has 99% more story in the 40 or so minutes ive played then in the previous Doom games, and all of the little story bits, emails you get, audio files, they all add to the creepy atmosphere of the game.
I don't know if this will continue throughout, but thus far, Doom 3 has surpassed expectations.

Alex

Ok, ive played further.
BUY THIS GAME!
Easily the creepiest game i've ever played, ever.

I wouldn't doubt that the game could be in works for the next Xbox or PS2... more than likely PS2 because of sales of the XB in japan.

Creepier than Silent Hill or the Suffering?
I havent played the suffering, but it beats silent hill in so many ways.
1. It looks better. In the case of this game, the way it looks really is apart of how scary it is, because it just looks so real.
2. Flickering lights=ten millions times more frightening then fog.
3. Sound...god is the sound ever better. Im almost as impressed with the sound as i am the graphics.
....if you play it, wait until you get to the bit with the mirror...or the little pentagram.
...
God this game is soo good!!!

Well sales for Shenmue 2 on the Xbox sucked so much that it basically almost destoryed the franchise. It should be interesting though.

Probably because all the people who wanted it imported the UK version for the DC while you had to wait a year just to get the Xbox version.

Dammit.

I'm just going to assume Ryo's dad accidently killed Lan Di's father/brother/son, and that Lan Di finally realises this, and they team up to fight a giant dragon protecting the Chinese treasures.

There's something so incredibly soothing about a game where you spend half your time moving crates and gambling for money.

Doom 3 is probaly the next game i'm going to pick up after I get SF Anniversary. I read the review and I heard that the only minor downside of it is the enemy AI.

StoneGold
08-06-2004, 04:29 PM
Absolutely beautiful. The enemy AI actually isn't too bad; keep in mind, these are zombies from hell you are fighting, not mercenaries with a fear for their own lives. It shouldn't be Farcry in that regard.

Several things I have noticed about the game though, you can feel in one or two spots how it has been dumbed down, probably for home system conversion. A lack of a seperate action button most specifically. This of course gets irritating when your mouse moves slightly and you put a round in a computer screen.

Two, on my rig, I get a little slowdown when a monster gets right in my face. Ack.

Three, it's still just a FPS. It's a very good FPS, but that's all it is. So don't expect anything more.

As for the good, the graphics are amazing, the light sourcing is some of the best I have ever seen, down to the dark spot in the flashlight. The lip synching is some of the best ever in a real time graphics setup. The sounds are incredible, as are the physics.

Finally beat the game!

But there are some lingering Qs....

1) The demon head that came out the one door. He pops out and says something in aramaic I think? In any event, what's he saying? Hell, what
are any of the monsters saying?

2) I know that monster's named "father". Father of what exactly? And if anything, is he the one that is growing in the base?

3) Is the evil scientist dead? The thing swallowed his head, but does that mean he's gone, or just imprisoned?

4) I don't suppose the Soul Cube is destroyed is it?

Um...toher demons?
3) Is the evil scientist dead? The thing swallowed his head, but does that mean he's gone, or just imprisoned?
No, hes waiting the the exampsion pack, which will no doubht be called "Doom 3: To hell And Back" or somethign similar.

4) I don't suppose the Soul Cube is destroyed is it
They didn't say it was, i don't see why it would be...certainly wouldn't let itself stay in the base, just in case the demons came back.

Warcraft III Beta Patch Details
Beta version 404 of the upcoming 1.17 patch is now available on the Westfall gateway. This patch contains many bug fixes, balance changes, a couple new features, and two new Neutral Heroes:
http://www.blizzard.com/

The Goblin Alchemist

In this unconventional pairing, a fanatical Goblin master rides on the back of his Ogre slave. Despite undergoing a series of chemical "treatments" to enforce compliance, the Ogre sometimes shows signs of independence and even outright defiance. However, these outbursts are swiftly quelled by the Goblin master, who can be like his concoctions -- harsh and volatile. Though personal differences may at times distract this duo, when it comes to biological warfare and raw, brute strength, the Goblin Alchemist and his Ogre slave are truly at the top of their game!

http://www.battle.net/war3/neutral/goblinalchemist.shtml

The Firelord

Long ago, when the world was in a state of constant turmoil, the Elementals (Earth, Wind, Fire and Water) faithfully served their Old-God masters. When the Old Gods were defeated by the coming of the Titans, the Elementals were banished to an alternate plane of existence. Over time the world became Azeroth, where Human wizards learned how to call back the Elementals through the art of summoning. The Firelord is one of these liberated Elementals. Consumed by hatred for all organic life, he roams the world he once called home, sewing chaos, wreaking vengeance, and inflicting pain with extreme prejudice.

You will find that the fps isn't that bad once you get past the original section of the game. Once your in the dark a lot less details are required on screen therefore your frames should stay fairly high.

I played with medium and it fine all the way.

It it quite scary with the baby wailing sounds. If you all noticed it got a bit of everything taken from other games.

1. A whole concept of you escaping a overun base. Can u say half life.

2. Weapons are very similar to Halo. Espeically the sub machine gun.

3. Sounds made heard from Max Payne 2 where their stage which is all buggered up with moaning and baby crying sounds.

4. Concpet of things jumping out in the dark and attacking you. AVP 2.

5. Resident evil type with zombies crawling out with monsters coming out of the woodwork and closet.

Despite the facts mentioned. the games probably one of the best looking games around. Superb Graphics, good storyline and it definietly frighting.

All Good

Actually Half-Life ripped this concept from an earlier fps as well, just try to guess which one that is.

2. Weapons are very similar to Halo. Espeically the sub machine gun.

Kyo
AVP2, plenty of games before AVP2 had that concept.

5. Resident evil type with zombies crawling out with monsters coming out of the woodwork and closet.
Kyo
Resident Evil was hardly first to use zombies crawling out of places.

Just tried out the Demo.
The graphics are pretty cool and even on my Geforce 2 card they look pretty well on medium.

The Game feels oldschool, with building up your base and storydriven gameplay and I quite enjoyed the Demo.

Didnt have a good RTS since Spellforce at the beginning of the year and it seems this one could be the next game I'll get.

about: Armies of Exigo is a real-time strategy game in which elves, beasts, knights, and other creatures battle both above and below the ground. Take control of massive armies, wage wars in forests and river valleys of the surface, and then descend into the caverns and catacombs to face off against the dark evil. Armies on all sides can delve deep underground to travel unseen by foes, or they can burrow to the surface to unleash powerful attacks on unsuspecting enemies. Engage in a single-player campaign and save the world of Exigo, or go online for massive multiplayer skirmishes with up to eight players.

This demo features one of the single-player maps from the full game.

Acclaim didn't always make poor games. Turok 1 and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil for N64 were, I thought, great games. Perhaps had they taken Turok: Evolution in a different direction, the franchise would've been revitalized. Can't say much for their recent stuff though...

I'm so shocked, and yet, NOT shocked. Honestly, despite a few good titles, Acclaim deserves this fate. The sheer amount of crappy games they made finally rose up from the videogame graveyard and bit them on the proverbial ass.

Analyst sees "hellish" holiday season ahead
Industry analysts at Wedbush Morgan predict a Christmas "disaster" for console publishers off the A-list.

Financial analysts Wedbush Morgan Securities issued its annual preholiday season report for investors in the console game business today. The analysts covering the game sector at Wedbush predict a make-or-break Christmas for game publishers. Their research finds that the holiday sales will be dominated by a handful of million-selling games and that any publisher without one of those games in its lineup will "suffer."

The report, titled "The Nightmare Before Christmas: Hellish Holiday Lineup of New Video Games Could Spell Disaster for Many Publishers," calls this year's console lineup "the most formidable...ever released in a single year."

The 11 console titles--all sequels--that the research predicts will sell more than 1 million units each and will dominate holiday sales are as follows:

•Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Take-Two, PS2)
•Halo 2 (Microsoft, Xbox)
•Madden NFL 2005 (Electronic Arts, PS2)
•Need for Speed Underground 2 (Electronic Arts, PS2)
•Gran Turismo 4 (SCEA, PS2)
•Spider-Man 2 (Activision, PS2)
•Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (Activision, PS2)
•Pokémon LeafGreen (Nintendo, GBA)
•Pokémon FireRed (Nintendo, GBA)
•Metal Gear Solid 3 (Konami, PS2)
•Mortal Kombat: Deception (Midway, PS2)

Wedbush Morgan predicts that during 2004, 218 million pieces of software will be sold in total, skewed such that an astonishing 114 million of them will be moved during the final three months of the year. In addition, the report closes with in-depth looks at six of the major third-party publishers and recommendations for investors (giving a "Buy" rating to Take-Two, Activision, Atari, and Electronic Arts and a "Hold" rating to Midway and THQ).

While today's report focused on the console and handheld sectors, the document briefly alluded to three PC games thought capable of driving sales of a million or more before the end of the calendar year. Those would be Doom 3 (Activision), the upcoming The Sims 2.0 (Electronic Arts), and "November’s" release of Half-Life 2 (VU Games). "We expect the total unit sales for the 11 console/handheld million unit SKUs plus the three PC million unit SKUs to exceed 30 million units in calendar 2004," said Wedbush analysts Michael Pachter and Edward Woo in today's report.

This game looks really good. The current Official Playstation Magizine has a demo disc with a playable verison of this game on it! I really want to get that disc and check this out! It should be good (Repbulic Commando and KOTR 2 also look really good).

Though, I'm looking forward to Fable the most. Reviewers, imo, have their own opinions and I usually disagree with those opinions. Like Sudeki, the game got rated low by a lot of reviewers but I thought it was a really cool game! I think Fable is going to be great (I've seen plenty of photos, videos, and read plenty of info to make me think so. Plus I'm not one of those long time fans thats upset a ton about how features have been cut out...like many of the reviewers are).

Still, this game will definitly be a cool rental I think. So will Republic Commando!

Analyst: Game sales up 8 percent in August, 10 percent in 2004
Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter says the game market was worth $360 million last month--and was once again dominated by Electronic Arts.

In what has become a monthly ritual, Wedbush Morgan game analyst Michael Pachter has preempted the latest NPD report by releasing his own predictions about the previous month. According to Pachter, August 2004 was good for gaming, with $360 million in sales--an 8 percent rise over August 2003's $334 million.

"After the traditionally slow summer months, sales typically begin to build in August and September heading into the holiday season, with monthly variations based on the quality and quantity of games released. We expect this trend to continue in 2004," he said.

Patcher was also optimistic about the year as a whole. For 2004, he forecast that "strong holiday sales will allow the US console software market to deliver 10 percent year-over-year growth (up from 5 percent in 2003)." Pachter also said that, despite several lackluster summer months, 2004 sales are already up 6 percent compared to the same period last year.

Which publisher is benefiting most from these rosy numbers? Even though it doesn't take a financial expert to tell you Electronic Arts remains the top dog, Patcher did anyway. "We expect EA to again be the market-share leader," said the analyst, who estimated that 38.9 percent of the games sold in August bore the EA logo. He attributed the company's success to the one-two debut of Madden NFL 2005 and NCAA Football 2005, as well as continued solid sales from Fight Night 2004 and Need for Speed Underground, among others.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War goes gold
New Relic RTS based on the popular tabletop war game will deploy to stores on September 20.

Relic Entertainment, one of publisher THQ's internal studios, announced today that Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War has gone gold. The latest PC game based on the popular tabletop war game from UK-based Games Workshop will ship worldwide on September 20. It is rated "M" for Mature and will cost $49.99. Preordering Dawn of War from either EBGames or GameStop will net players a stack of bonus goods, including a poster, a strategy guide, and a CD featuring the game soundtrack, screenshots, and a making-of video.

Dawn of War will follow a fractious contingent of space marines struggling to defend a colony in a far-flung corner of the of the Warhammer universe. It will feature an 11-mission single-player campaign with approximately 10 to 15 hours' worth of gameplay. The game will also feature an extensive online multiplayer component, and it will allow players to play on one of four sides: the space marines, the orks, the eldar, and the chaos space marines.

Acquired by THQ earlier this year, Relic Entertainment is the creator of the critically acclaimed Homeworld series of science-fiction real-time strategy titles. "We are confident that the visually stunning, epic battles create a distinctive and totally accessible RTS experience," said Ron Moravek, general manager of Relic Entertainment. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's extensive previous coverage, including a series of designer diaries.

I just caught this, and I have to say I was disappointed. There were some glaring omissions, including no mention whatsoever of RPGs beyond the online variety. Indeed, the entire RPG, sports, and puzzle genres were swept aside, with the exception of Tetris (which got a scant 3 minutes, mostly relating to its Game Boy launch). Myst got some screen time, but not a peep was heard of, oh, say, Square Soft.

Girl gaming was relegated to Nancy Drew. I swear to God, this was the extent of it. The picture painted was girls playing Nancy Drew, and boys playing everything else. No crossover. Which would probably come as a shock to the female population of this board.

Also, I understand the need to maintain journalistic objectivity, but the representative for the anti-violence coalitions was the most ridiculous knee-jerk schmuck you could imagine. Her analysis of the role video games played in the Columbine shooting showed that not only does she know nothing about video games, she also apparently knows nothing about the Columbine shooting.

Finally, as an avid Trekker, I had to laugh my ass off at the comparison of the future of gaming to that most notorious of plot-device deathtraps, the Holodeck. If that's really the future of gaming, we're all in a lot of trouble.

It also started out alot like the various episodes of Icon's that deals with the industry.

But oh my god. Do you mean to tell me that girl gamers don't play Nancy Drew and Barbie exclusively???

I also liked the bit about the Dr. and his son Alexander. "Turn off the game son, turn off the game son" Umm..how about just turning the game off for him? Not to mention the kid had to have something wrong with him, when his father tried to pull him away from the computer he was almost up the wall and upsidedown, hilarious.

Why do people feel the need to turn any fine turn-based game into an RTS?

On the game itself, I've never played any Warhammer game (hate the marketing worse than I hate Magic's), but it at least looks cool. But I've noticed that RTS's have a tendency to be short on the "strategy" aspect (compared to turn-based), reducing the game to who can amass the most forces the quickest, or blowing through the tech tree quickest, or just generally clicking their way through the game the quickest. Also, 11 missions seems like a REALLY small number for a game sporting 4 different (though I don't know how distinctive) races. Didn't Starcraft have 10 or so for each of its races?

But it does look purty.

I hope they realize that it doesn't matter how immersive a game setting is, if the core gameplay is more boring than Counterstrike, nobody will want to play it. Although there is a fairly hardcore community of Morrowind supporters, so it may be just me that doesn't enjoy the single player MMORPG experience.

Really like the way the game looked, though. At least it wasn't your average bleh high fantasy setting.

On a tangential note, I hope Bethesda doesn't screw up Fallout 3 too badly (no fan will be completely satisfied, ever).

Many of the X-box owners are sports and first person shooter fans, so yeah, most of them get bored with it real quick. If you've played any serious console or PC rpgs before and really like them, most of them have a blast with it. In fact, some fans of the pervious game before Morrowwind actually complained that Morrowwind's accessible world was smaller than Daggerfall. Then again, Daggerfall looked like crap in comparison, so to each his own. From what I've read on the boards, many fans of the series, particularly PC people, are afraid that they are going to water the game down even more to please the XBOX people.

Morrowind may have been smaller, but it still offered a play time that was easily as long. Certainly kept me interested longer. After about the 800th random mission or cave, Daggerfall got old. Also, to complete every mission, explore every cave, get a huge collection of items and such, become the head of every organization.....would still take a stupidly long period of time.

I don't see why they would. Morrowind was pretty much a straight port, and countless people ate it up. Which goes to show that the game doesn't need to be dumbed down to sell well.

Even if they did base it on the X-box consumers, they'd realize that the fans are happy with the already existing formula, and simply want it overhauled and improved. Which means that the product wouldn't be simplified.

I know it happened with DeusEx:IV, but I'm pretty sure developers world-wide listened to the grumbling that followed that fiasco.

What a coincidence, cause I was just suddenly interested in Morrowind. I'll just hijack this thread for a moment. Is it worth picking up? It sounds interesting.

I'll be a dissenting voice and say it's a crappy game. It's a "huge" game, sure. But the caves are all functionally the same, the towns really aren't all that distinctive, the fighting is uninteresting and boring, and cliff racers are quite possibly the most annoying thing ever.

I'd rather take a game that isn't as big, but is more dense, like Planescape: Torment, Beyond Good and Evil, or the Fallout games.

Dumbing it down for consoles/focusing on development for consoles isn't the way to go. People *hate* that. I certainly had to listen to enough crabbing, moaning, and complaining about it.

I checked out the www.gamefaqs.com forum, and aparantly the same will be smaller in scope then Morrowind due to the cost of producing the improved graphics and because "Statistically, gamers prefer smaller games."

Good news is, aparantly they including an even more insane construction kit, so the Mod community will go crazy go nuts. Stuff like the Tamirel Rebuilt project for Morrowind blow my mind.

Thing about that is, I reckon most hardcore Elder Scrolls fans know that the series on the whole isn't going to be wildly popular, but we love it none the less. For some odd reason it's the only type of RPG that I love. It definately appeals to a niche market (the Obsessive Compulsive type?)

I reckon it appeals to the same market that MMORPG's do, but without having to pay the 10-15 dollars a month or the social aspect of it.

I also forgot another thing that annoyed the hell out of me. The Journal system was pretty bad in organizing quests, especially in contrast to the Bioware games like Neverwinter Nights or whatnot. I kept having to flip through several pages to remember who I had to kill where and for whom. Sure, if I was more "hardcore" I'd keep my own journal, but I'm not willing to take a step backwards in convenience just for immersion values.

Oh yeah definately, I love the idea of MMORPG's, but monthly fees aren't my thing, and I just don't like the majority of people you meet online in games. Battle.net is bad enough, I would hate to play a game where you're dependant on the "pwned/n00b" crowd.

Journal thing was horrible. But I discovered later on that the greatest thing about Morrowind was the Mod community, stuff like Redd's Heads, Better Bodies and patches to fix the journals made the game several times more interesting then the gold product. I think people kind of expected problems, especially since Daggerfall was almost unplayable upon release without downloading gave saving patches.

Eh. Morrowind was REALLY boring. I owned and loved Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Seige, and I thought Morrowind sucked.

Of course, I think *alot* of really popular games suck, so I'm not the best judge. My list of games that I've liked is a whole lot shorter than the list of ones I've detested.

I guess I'm one of those like Morrowind because it is MMORPG like, but without the monthly fee. Besides, when I used to play EQ, most guys were just mad power gamers and not really doing much rpging. Also I never played it as much as others so kept falling behind in terms of levels, best to leave it for another thread.

I haven't tried games like Neverwinter Nights or Dungeon Siege. I guess the interface kinda puts me off after having played the likes of Diablo. While I didn't hate Diablo or anything, it wasn't interesting to me either.

Speaking of porting, while the dumbing down issue is somewhat concerning, to me a bigger problem is the technical aspect. A lot of ports aren't coded very well in ports and so run poorly on PCs when say ported from a console. And being the original Morrowind's game engine wasn't great from a technical perspective, hopefully the console porting won't make this problem for the new version.

Eidos sees red in '04, has high hopes for '05
British publisher blames soft market in the US for 2004 fiscal year loss, confirms PSP title in the works and Tomb Raider VII due next summer.

Today in London, the UK's biggest game publisher, Eidos Plc, released its financials for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2004. Revenues and profit were both off, with the company reporting FY 2004 revenues of 133.9 million pounds ($241 million), compared to FY 2003 revenues of 151.5 million pounds ($269 million). And instead of the 17.4 million pounds ($31 million) profit it reported last year, this year saw the company post a net loss of 2.9 million pounds ($5.2 million).

"While the results for the year to June 2004 are disappointing, the Company's underlying business and product portfolio remain strong", said Eidos chairman John van Kuffeler. "Management continues to focus on driving the business forward and a significant release schedule, comprising a mix of sequel and new franchise titles, is planned for the year ahead."

In a statement, Eidos said its back catalog was strong, driving 15.7 percent of its sales, up from 11 percent the previous year. Of its new titles, the company said Hitman: Contracts was its top seller, moving 1.7 million units. Additionally, six other Eidos games sold between 500,000 and one million copies each. Those were: Backyard Wrestling: Don't Try This At Home; Deus Ex: Invisible War; Championship Manager: Season 03/04, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, which sold a million copies despite dismal reviews.

One of those titles slated for FY 2005 is the seventh Tomb Raider game, currently in development at Eidos-owned Crystal Dynamics. The report stated that Tomb Raider VII would arrive in the fourth quarter of Eidos' 2005 financial year--that's calendar April 1, 2005 at the earliest. The date jibes with earlier reports which said the as-yet-unnamed sequel would arrive in calendar summer 2005.

Besides Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics is also at work on Eidos' first PSP game. According to the report, "a number of the new concept ideas and preproduction works, for both platform and PlayStation Portable (PSP) application, are being developed in this studio." No other details on said PSP title were available.

Other upcoming titles the company touted were Championship Manager 5, due in the first half of the year "with an online version of the game to follow" Nine more titles are due in the second half of Eidos' FY2005, including Hitman 4 and the aforementioned Tomb Raider VII.

As for the recent reports that Eidos is courting corporate suitors, today's earnings statement obliquely addressed the subject. "Discussions, which relate to a possible sale of the company, are progressing well, although there can be no certainty at this stage as to whether or not they will lead to an offer being made for the company," read the report.

TOKYO--Early purchasers of the Final Fantasy XI expansion Chains of Promathia are reporting that it contains a leaflet promoting a new PC game from Square Enix.

Inside the Chains of Promathia package is a teaser flyer for a game titled "Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion." The flyer offers no information on the game, other than the fact that it will be a PlayOnline title. It also provides the URL for the game's official Web site.

The Web site, however, offers more information on Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion. A brief "about" page reveals that the game will be a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Also included are 10 screenshots--five from the game itself and five from the trailer--which are viewable on the site.

GameSpot will have more details on Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion as they emerge.

While this is a valid concern, one of the strengths of PC gaming is that you can patch your games, even the technical stuff. I think X-Box live can do this now, but you'd have to pay extra for that (I think?).

Hooray for the internet.

Nights and Siege weren't really *that* much like Diablo. The similarities were only superficial, they all had a top-down view perspective, but that's about it. Nights was more like a fantasy version of Knights Of the Old Republic, and Siege was more like a combination RTS/RPG.

If you want something that feels like a MMORPG, try the Dot-Hack games for the Playstation 2. I hear that they're very much that feel, and they're decent RPG games (although not great, just okay to good in quality. I did have a friend who was addicted to them.)

Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns was released in 2001, and though it wasn't a blockbuster success, many of those who actually played it loved it. Its particular take on real-time strategy focused on the strategic control of companies of troops and on eliminating much of the tedious micromanagement often associated with the genre. As such, the game proved to be an innovative change of pace from the conventions of real-time strategy. The sequel, Kohan II: Kings of War, retains its predecessor's unique gameplay while also making key changes that distinguish it both from the original and from any other RTS games in the intervening years. And while some of the changes streamline a slickly designed RTS model even further, they don't detract from this great game's own winning formula.

Kohan II: Kings of Warscreenshot
Kohan heroes round up followers to save the world.

Kohan II's fantasy setting takes place long after the events of the first Kohan game. Naava Daishan is chasing after the remains of the Ceyah faction, who were the aggressors and losers of the first game. Led by Sebak, the Ceyah survivors escape from Naava's grasp and unleash a dark power upon Khaldun. The forces of humanity are on the brink of annihilation, and it's up to Naava and Jonas Teramun, a recently awakened Kohan with no memories, to unite the races of the land. The storyline is a little unoriginal for a fantasy setting, but it is enjoyable nonetheless, thanks to a few well-placed plot twists. The last mission is also quite fun and suitably climactic, although the game's ending is rather dull and disappointing. The single-player campaign spans 25 missions and should take anywhere from 15 hours to twice that long to complete, depending on your strategies and if you complete optional secondary objectives. At any rate, like its predecessor, the campaign in Kohan II is too scripted and suffers from weak artificial intelligence. Also, it'll be an absolute breeze for experienced RTS players at the default difficulty, and even hard difficulty won't be much of a challenge for the first half of the game. The missions are varied, though, and you'll get to play as each of the game's races at various parts in the campaign. You may or may not enjoy this aspect, because even though this lends some variety to the gameplay, you don't really get attached to any particular characters or their causes.

Xbox and PS2 Mortal Kombat: Deception golden
Midway's venerable slaughter-palooza has been sent to the factory and is set to be unleashed October 4.

Months after it revealed the franchise wasn't finished, Midway has announced that Mortal Kombat: Deception has gone gold for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Both versions of the M-rated fighting game are on schedule to ship on October 4, with a GameCube version slated for a January 2005 release.

The latest installment in the long-running fighting series, Mortal Kombat: Deception will feature 24 playable characters. Classic personalities like Scorpion, Mileena, Baraka, and Sub-Zero will be immediately available, while several new kombatants will be unlockable as the game progresses.

Like Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Deception will be fully 3D, and it will feature the gut-busting, skull-bursting violence that is the series' trademark. Additionally, the game will offer several other modes of play besides the traditional arcade-style fights to the death, including the strategy-themed "chess kombat" and "konquest," which is a free-roaming, RPG-style adventure.

GameSpot recently kicked around a near-final build of Mortal Kombat: Deception, so be sure to read our hands-on preview to learn more about it.

DFC Intelligence releases new market forecasts for games industry
Market research firm predicts early Xbox 2 launch, industry growth to $31.6 billion by 2009.

DFC Intelligence, a market research firm focused on interactive entertainment, announced today that it has released its latest forecast. In the new report, DFC predicts that worldwide sales of PC games, console games, and portable games combined will increase to $31.6 billion in 2009, up from $23.2 billion in 2003.

In April, DFC released a scenario forecasting a 2006 launch for the "big three" hardware systems from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. But the current report changes direction-- now, DFC's scenario reflects a 2005 launch for the Xbox 2, ahead of Sony's and Nintendo's consoles. The report also presents forecasts for the performance of Sony's PSP and the Nintendo DS. DFC president David Cole expects the systems to drive an increase in the portable game market, from $3.9 billion worldwide in 2003 to $11.1 billion in 2007.

What I don't get is why Sony was singled out as the culprit here. They were following Nintendo's lead in adding vibration to the controller, and the concept goes back at least as far as Sega's 1987 arcade game Afterburner. This article doesn't give much in the way of specifics and I'm not finding this in the US patent office website's database, but I have the suspicion that this is yet another case of a bad patent.

PlayStation 3 Will Support Blu-ray
Sony makes it official at Tokyo conference.

September 22, 2004 - Sony ended the speculation and rumor today with the announcement at the Tokyo Game Show that its as-yet-unnamed next-generation console, which gamers are referring to as PlayStation 3, will support Blu-ray Disc (BD-ROM) technology.

A Blu-ray disc holds 54GB of data, six times the current capacity for DVD-ROM discs, which the PlayStation 2 currently uses. The next-generation console, expected to launch in 2006, will support broadband and play Blu-ray movies and music in addition to videogame play.

Sony has not said if the new console would be backwards-compatible with PS2. However, the Blu-ray Disc Consortium has stated that when Blu-ray DVD players hit the market in the U.S. at the end of this year, they will be backwards compatible with regular DVD playback.

Sony Group Research has developed a single optical pick-up that can read data from Compact Disc, DVD and Blu-ray. Plus, optical media vendors like TDK are working on adding more than two layers to a BD-ROM disc. TDK has a quad-layer Blu-ray disc in the laboratories with 100GB of storage capacity.

Microsoft and Nintendo are working on next-generation consoles but have not made any public statements regarding what DVD platform they will support.

Blue Ray DVDs simply have the "pits" and "tracks" smaller since the laser used has a smaller wavelength, just like DVD vs. a CD. The Quality of movies are really related to size and independant of the medium used. You can put DVD quality movies on CDs, you just need more CDs.

AH, sorry, I really didn't express that very well. What I mean to ask was if there is six times the size, would that mean dvds would look six times better, or would they just cram more stuff in there.

Here's some more detail on this issue. Nintendo patented the Rumble Pak before Immersion Inc came up with theirs... making me wonder even more what the hell is going on here! Also, this resolution would force Sony to effectively pay an allowance to Microsoft! Welcome to crazytown, population: us.

MissKale

It might have to do with the technology behind the shaking rather than just that it shakes. Nintendo's Rumble Pack (I'm assuming) works differently than the vibration mechanism in the Sony controllers, and may well be patented separately.

I dunno 'bout the Rumble Pak, but the Dualshock works, if I'm not mistaken, by having two small rotating offset weights at either end of the controller. Different rotation speeds achieve different vibrational sensations, and with clever programming, a sort of pseduo-"doppler effect" vibration can be achieved by rotating them in order (Metal Gear Solid used this effect when the helicopter flew overhead near the beginning of the game).

Interesting... I wonder how the Rumble Pak, and for that matter, the 'Cube controller works.

I think it only has one vibrator, since that seems to be what the bump is for on the Gamecube controller underneath.

No, the blue color was for copy protection and showing it was different from dvd, cds, and regular PS games. the Blue Ray is kind of recent

What I mean to ask was if there is six times the size, would that mean dvds would look six times better, or would they just cram more stuff in there.

They'd do Both.

I don't remember seeing a thread on this, and I think it warrants one (feel free to delete this if there's already a thread on this).

First, if you don't know, read this: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/10/01/news_6109473.html

Secondly, I think this is awesome news. The adventure genre has always been one of my favorites, as I think it's one of the best genres to create really immersive worlds with a great deal of depth, with a colorful or memorable cast of characters. There's also that special sense of satisfaction of using your noggin, as opposed to your well-trained hand-eye coordination (not that I'm saying that's not satisfying).

But let's not jump to conclusions and assume that they're making Sam and Max 2. I believe Lucasarts still holds the rights to Sam and Max, although I've also heard that they're going to lose those rights sometime soon. I'm kind of disappointed they had to start with licensed works, but I understand it, as there is already a built in audience for that, which would help sales. Hopefully they can make something that parallels or, dare I say it, surpasses the great Grim Fandango?

For more information, hit their website: http://www.telltalegames.com/

Edit: So, apparently, nobody cares about the future of Sam and Max 2 :P

But, I was surfing their site, and found an image that looks like a sillhoutted character from Bone (site: http://www.telltalegames.com/products ). Does anyone know if Jeff Smith licensed out Bone for a videogame?

City of Heroes players memorialize Christopher Reeve

Memorial vigil held by players of the online superhero MMORPG honors passing of the Man of Steel.

After the news of the passing of Christopher Reeve hit the airwaves, players of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game City of Heroes gathered together for a memorial for the fallen hero. Players gathered in full hero garb and saluted in tandem in memory of the man best known for playing Superman on the big screen. Reeve, who became a champion of spinal cord research following a paralyzing horse riding accident in 1995, died Monday as a result of heart failure stemming from an infection related to his paralysis. He was 52 years old.
