hello people
what x-men characters do you consider to be the most underrated and why?
Me: hooooboy this will take a while
Maggot: I have no idea why people hated him. Cool personality. Creative Powers.
Graymalkin: Just cause he has the ability to be awesome, could have a cool relationship with Professor X.......and we barely see him.
Mr M. Coolest Powers. Coolest Personality. (I've only seen him in X-men 198) and I hope he evolves into reality soon.

I don't see that. I loved the idea of QQ that he was a student turned villian.
Mr. M was a little too dirty and crazy to be him.

Nightcrawler, definitely, I absolutely HATE how they downplay his character as if he were a newb next to people like Emma. He is of the second Gen that helped make the x-men popular. Ice Man is another who doesn't get enough respect and is downplayed next to more shorter term serving X-Men. He's of the 05.

Mercury - she seems consistantly written...I'd like to see her used more
Quinten Quire - he would've been a great villain
Magma - Allison Crestmere was a great original story...but that was undone now nobody does anything with her

Iceman is one of the most powerful beings on the planet. and is so underused its tragic. he can instantaneously change water vapor too ice. Skipping the whole liquid phaze. imagine if he got pissed enough to just start freezing peoples blood, or the air in their lungs? a good storyline would be to show Xavier or the rest of the original class doing their best to keep him lighthearted out of fear of him turning into an ultimate badass.

I'm still trying to catch up on about 10 years of X-books, so I may have missed/not read anything with her recently..But I'd have to say Husk, The last thing I've seen her in since I starting reading again was the introduction of Josh, and if she wasn't his sister, I doubt she'd have been involved at all.
I'd also like to see more Mercury and Match.

Sebastian Shaw. He is tailor made to defeat high end bricks and yet they do nothing with him.
Mercury. Favorite character since NX:AX... Next to Hellion (who I'm finding it increasingly difficult to care about anymore)
Beast. He's one of the least liked X-Men because of bad/uncreative writing. He is more powerful than most of the more feral Marvel characters.
Angel (Warren). Not Death-Angel. Specifically, Angel. Another character who suffers from poor/unchreative writing.
Cordelia Frost. Because I'm an Emma Frost fanboy and had to bring her up.
Martha Johansson. I thoroughly enjoyed her Nation X story-line. She's a lot more powerful than people remember, and yet no one really remembers her as a real character because she's a brain in a glass orb when in reality, that's what makes her so much more interesting.
Leech. Huge asset to the X-Men... Where is he now? And why don't he, Artie, and Franklin EVER AGE?!?!?
Dragoness. I don't know why I find her so fascinating... but unfortunately I do...
Boom Boom. She's very powerful and has an odd skillset for her personality so I'd love to see what serious writing could do with her nowadays.
Emplate. People forget that he's a powerfully dark mystic. Sounds like a nice foil for Magik, if anything.
Spiral. Another relatively powerful mystic with a lot of untapped potential in terms of storytelling.
Molly Hayes. 'Nuff said.
Polaris. She's just spectacular.
Havok. Because he he's powerful and shown to be a great leader when he needs to be.
Mystique. Cause she's an excellent fighter with psychological disorders who has a very useful power.
And that's all I can think of right now.

Right now, I would probably rate Xavier as.
I think generally, Havok, Polaris, Spiral, M, Cecilia, Karima, Sage and Domino are pretty underrated most of the time.

Out of long stay X-men characters, the most underrated:
Dazzler - By now, Alison should be in the big leagues category. She is one of the most powerful x-men, and she has a unique style, is fun, and a breath fresh air. She has had a bad decade and was barely existing in the 90s, but things seem to be a little different for the disco diva.
Polaris - Perhaps one of the most powerful mutants in the world, and the daughter of Magneto himself. It seems the only way to write Lorna is if she is constantly possesed or psychotic. She needs redemption. A.S.A.P.
Havok - One of the best X-men, who own up his brothers in every way. He just get no respect sadly.
Iceman - An x-man icon, yet he is wallpapered to death. Comic relief can only go so far.
Psylocke - The omega telepath has had her many share of downs. From bad writing, power degradation, power switches, disapperances, death, and being shunned away in all of the X-men live media.
Longshot - For fucks sake, he is the original Gambit!!!
Banshee - Sean has just been shunned over left to right with everything. Hi most successful run was generation X. He is a wonderful character, but writers want who they want.
Maddie Pryor - Way to ruin a good character.
Short stays or new x-men
Mercury - Words cannot express how underrated this girl is. Perhaps its a good thing, since she is one of the few new x-men (besides Dust, X-23, and Armor) gets written consistently, never a bore, and have the potential to be a major threat.
Wallflower - Way to waste a character with a kick ass powerset. Poor Laurie. One day, hopefully.
Chamber - Jono was ahead of his time. He had so much going on that I think that might've been his problem.
Gentle - Sigh. All black male heros just don't stay long. Nuff said.
Petra and Sway - We missed out on 2 awesome females, to two shitty males? WTF really? Vulcan?! Lmao.
Cecilia Reyes - Hero or Doctor? Activist or renegade? Make up your damn mind writers!!
The most underrated X-man imho tho, will be my favorite z-lister ofcourse :)

So much potential. So much character and personality. But again, when writers just have no interest in a character no more, what do ya do? You kill them off or limbo them. :( And Shard Bishop was no exception. The second (Not cece!) black x-woman just bounced off the face of earth. Since her second death, she is one of the few x-men to never come back. I hope one day one of the writers in the future outs her in X-force where she belongs. R.I.P Shard. One the bright side despiting more popular X-men (Iceman, Psylocke, Colossus), Shard appeared in 6 episodes of the animated series.

many fit into this, but I'll list one of my favorites.
Colossus.
you got thee strongest mutant brick and one of the strongest metas on the planet, who works well on a team and is well trained.
a guy with the heart of an artist and a soul of a farmer in probably one of the more stable relationships in marvel.
instead
he either gets relegated to the worf effect or a wallflower.
honestly give him at least one feat of strength per comic where he's in and have him strut his stuff.

I'm gonna go with Havoc. You would think he would be really important, being the leader of the mutant world's brother and all, but he has been pushed aside, sent of to Shiar Empire to lead the Starjammers.
I think it would be a great story if upon his return to earth, Havoc saw what Cyclops had done to the mutants by turning them into an army, and lead a resistance movement against Cyclops. This would then create a new "great rivalry" in the X-Universe, replacing the Xavier/Magneto rivalry that really fueled the original stories.
To be clear, Havoc wouldn't be a bad guy, he would just have a different way of seeing and doing things that was a little less militant and a little more reactive, like the old days.

Hisako of course. She sould be in the main team of X-Men and yet she doesn't appear at all in X-Books. It doesn't make any sense.

He was almost supposed to get a funky mini by this reasonably well known native american writer a few years back, but didn't pan out after the whole murder death kill crazy thing, which is unfortunate. Sounded good the mini, regarding creativity and even just when writers seem genuinely into characters.

Exodus:
He's one of the most powerful mutants on the planet, with the potential to be an A-list villain or an extremelly potent addition to the X-Men on Utopia. His problem is he's kinda on the fence right now. He was last seen trying to hand over leadership of the Acolytes to Xavier, trying to turn them into a force for the good of mutant kind. All it would take is a sit down with Xavier, Magneto and Cyclops and it would be very easy to sway Exodus onto the right path.
Beast:
Here's how I think Beast can be improved, and possibly remind people why he's earned the respect of his fellow X-Men and Avengers...
Give hims a leave of absence from the X-Men and Avengers. He goes on vacation in the Savage Land, where somehow he gets stranded and cut off from any outside help and he's trapped in the most dangerous parts of the jungle.
This will force Beast to rely not only on his incredible intellect, but he'll also be forced to tap into his animalistic side in order to overcome the dangers of the prehistoric jungle. Dinosaurs, cavemen, weird mutate creatures, and man-eating plants are just some of the dangers Beast will be forced to face in order to get back to civilisation.
This is where I wanna see Beast showcase his potential as a badass. He's got strength and agility on par with Spider-Man. He's got the genius level intellect to put him in the same league as Reed, Stark, T'challa, Pym, Banner and Doom. His animalistic/predatory part of his mutation could be explored, let him get his hands/claws dirty. I wanna see him get into a Wolverine-style beserker rage and fu#k some shit up!
Let's see him hunted by a team of Savage Land mutates, giving Beast someone decent to fight. A new and improved version of the Nasty Boys would be sweet...
In the end, im seeing Beast as a blending of Batman/Spider-Man/Wolverine/Reed Richard's, giving him the respect he deserves as one of the Original 5 X-Men, and a seasoned veteran of the Avengers.
