Sorry if this is old news or if there's another thread for it, but the search function hasn't been working for me lately. Recently I bought the Extremis motion comic on DVD, not really sure what to expect. I knew nothing of the Extremis story nor had I seen a motion comic before. I must say though I was quite impressed. Though the animation wasn't as fluid or good as a true animated feature, it was far more fluid and well done than I would have thought possible for a motion comic, and the art style was superb (I take it that they copied that look from the comic?). The story was solid and well contained, and there didn't seem to be any plot holes, least none that I was aware of. The voice actors, though not great, were good and decent choices. The dialog was superb. My favorite conversation was the one with the Sal Kennedy character. You usually don't see deep scientific/philosophical type conversations in many superhero stories (honestly the only other bit of dialog like that I've ever heard have been in anime, can't remember which though, I think a Ghost in the Shell movie and maybe once in Cowboy Bebop). That was interesting. The tone was dark but not brooding, the approach was quasi-realistic, great verisimilitude, and I loved the futurist slant/take/whatever. If I had a complaint, it would be the action wasn't particularly great. It was brutal, but quick and without a lot of moves and such (animation may have spoiled me here). Definitely a unique experience, unlike any other superhero story I've seen so far.

I do have a few questions. Are there any other motion comics of this caliber out there, and if so are any of them also coming out on DVD (The preview for the Spider-Woman motion comic looked promising, is it good?)? Would you recommend I try and track down the book for this, or did the motion comic pretty much cover everything in the Extremis story? And since I liked it so much, are there any similar stories you would recommend, Iron Man or otherwise? I only manage to make it to a bookstore with comics a few times a year, so something that requires serious searching may be out of my means (I still can't buy things online for example, bit of a caveman).

Thanks ahead of time, and again sorry if this has already been done, but Search wasn't working for me. Also sorry if this is the wrong spot for it, but Avengers seems the place for all Iron Man stuff so I think this is the right forum for this.

Really glad to hear you liked it! I loved it! It was f@#king awesome. There was nothing I didn't like about it. I had forgotten how violent the story was, but watching it was like WOAH!

I only managed to watch the first episode on youtube but I found it exceptional- and Stark's voice is SO right- particularly after the whiney voice he has in the (otherwise brilliant) Avengers cartoon.

You should really pick it up. The whole thing is amazing!

Got to agree with that, I was surprised by the violence of it. Like I said, the action was short but wonderfully brutal. Loved that. No holding back, brutal, bone breaking damage. Good to see that. Whole film (er, motion comic) was easily worth the 10 bucks I spent.

Definitely agreed. I know what they're going for with the voice on that show. They're going for a RDJr type take. I can understand that, that makes perfect sense. Problem is, that's not how it comes across as. It doesn't sound like a voice actor's take on the RDJr Iron Man, it sounds more like, well to me it sounds like Kevin Smith. That's just a bad voice for Iron Man, even worse than the voice for the 94 series (doesn't age particularly well that). Horrible choice there, sad shame since this may turn into Marvel's version of JLU.

Can anyone confirm that the DVD is closed-captiioned? I'm debating whether to get it or not. It doesn't say on Amazon.

I don't know anything about closed captioning, but there's no subtitles if that's it.

Does it have the "thought-balloon" symbol on the box? That can confirm that it's CC.

Looking over it again, I can't find any thought-balloon symbol. And though I didn't look for it, I don't think there was any CC symbol either.
Sorry.

Motion comics are awesome at times, normal in others, this is one of the awesome times

I saw the whole range of animated comics on Blu-Ray today at the shops. I was thinking about getting them (bar Black Panther), but then decided not to. Might pick them up given that some of you said IM was good.

I know this isn't about Iron Man, but the Watchmen Motion Comic is also excellent, and if I recall correctly, it includes the word balloons.

The Iron Man: Extremis motion comic probably has the most sophisticated animation--I mean, it looks almost like a CG feature, but it's partly because the art started out so photorealistic! I didn't care much for the voice acting in spots, but overall I'd recommend it for an Iron Man fan.

I don't think the animation worked out as well for the Astonishing X-Men motion comic--the story was good, but they were trying too hard to insert movement where more static images would have been appropriate.

The Spider-Woman motion comic doesn't move all that much, but the images are striking. Maleev's art is presented well. It's more like a comic with some special effects added. It doesn't try to be a cartoon.

The Watchmen motion comic, to me, is the best of them all so far. It's unquestionably a comic, the art comes through crystal clear, what motion exists is totally appropriate and undistracting, the colors are brilliant, and the voice acting (one guy doing all the different voices) is excellent. Also, the musical score is very good. I hope to soon own it on DVD.

IMO, in regards to animation, musical score, and voice acting, the the BLACK PANTHER motion comic is the best motion comic put out so far. I haven't saw a full episode of the IRON MAN EXTREMIS motion comic yet, but what I have seen so far puts it either equal to or better than the BP motion comic.

I'm going to check out the BP one for sure, but you should really check out the Iron Man motion comic. It really is that good!
