There was a sale table at my LCS the other day, and on a whim I picked up, quite cheaply, the 'Marvel Premiere Classic Vol. 39 - Fantastic Four: In Search Of Galactus'.
It collects issues #204 - #214, and is written by Marv Wolfman, with art by Keith Pollard, Sal Buscema and John Byrne, with inks by the great Joe Sinnott.

I've read the first issue, and the art has a nice Kirby influence, and the story had the right mix of interesting and cheese to keep me entertained.
(I flicked ahead, and the double page spread space battle in #405 was pretty sweet!)

My question is, why exactly is this collected in this format?
I'd never actually heard of this storyline before - not praised or despised - so I'm just curious why it warrants this treatment, and there's no forewords or afterwords to clue me in.

Was it a particularly popular storyline, or does it have some big change to the characters within?

I'll be reading it regardless, but I was just curious if anyone had any ideas - the only other book I've got in this format is the Grant/Zeck Punisher miniseries, and that one speaks for itself on why it was collected - that's when the character started to get huge - where as I've not even heard of the Wolfman run before, let alone this storyline.

I'd appreciate any context on this one!

My question is, why exactly is this collected in this format? The Sphinx/Galactus fight is fondly remembered in some quarters, but . . . yeah, I don't really know why they picked this one, either. I think Marvel's getting a little random in terms of what they put out in this format. If you look at the list of titles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Premiere_Classic), some of them are just bafflingly inconsequential.

Not sure why either but happy they did it. One big chunk of my FF collection nicely collected.

Well, maybe Galactus is going to get a push in some upcoming storylines, for sure Hickman is using him in the FF. It's just like they recently published more Tomb of Dracula stuff and then you have the current vampire storlines plus the writers wanting to elevate his status as a world wide menace.

Maybe because it was the first appearance of Terrax?

Forgot about that....maybe he will pop up in the new Annihilus storyline they've been promoting recently. Terrax would be good in a group of opponents against the Cosmic Avengers.

I think it was collected because back then a Galactus apperance was something special since it didn't seem to happen every 6months like it does now. Dudes almost as over used as Doom is these days.

They are not really going to be called that are they? What with there already been the Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers and Dark Avengers, cant they come up with a different name?

I think they were just trying to mine the Avengers name for PR purposes. I couldn't be sure from the announcement (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2010/12/abnett-and-lanning-to-assemble-marvels-annihilators-in-march/) if they will have an official "team" name or not.

For that era, it was a tremendous story. Multi issue epics in that era. I reread it when the hardcover came out and like a lot of Wolfman, it has aged pretty well.

It was my first FF story too:wink:
