I'd seen this in Previews for the past couple months and decided to pick up issue #1 yesterday. I'm not into steampunk but the art and concept looked cool to me. To clarify, steampunk doesn't bother me and looks kinda cool, but I never really got the obsession with it.

I was really surprised with the quality of this book from top to bottom. The art is really great. Movement, facial expressions, body form all really spot on. Awesome colors and just beautiful to look at. The characters that are introduced are compelling and there's indication of a lot of story to be told here. It's a mysterious and stylized start and I'm really looking forward to see where it goes. There's even steampunky recipes in the back! Quirky!

My only complaint is the ad placement. There's a number of them including the centerfold. In fact, the centerfold is two full page ads followed immediately by an ad on the next page. The coloring of the ads is so similar to the main story that it distracted me a couple times - took me out of the story that I was so getting into. I really prefer when companies put all their ads at the back and honor the art and experience of the comic. I know some probably feel they lose out on ad views that way, but it is distracting to have ads every few pages. I expect it from the big 2 but it really impresses me when indie titles buck that trend. Too bad they didn't here.

Overall a great start out of the gate - really impressed by this one. Probably my favorite book this week.

Editing to note that I spelled it wrong - it's Mechanika but I'm not gonna bother the mods to change the title.

I almost picked this up on weds but then decided against until I read some review.

Now I'm definitely leaning back towards grabbing it.

Also did you read # 0 by chance?

I got the recent #1 issue and Joe's art looks really good. I waited on the #0 issue and missed out too, as at least one shop doesn't have the issue anymore. I'm gonna see how #1 is to see if I need to seek out #0.

Sexy, spooky, steampunk fun. I've actually been a fan of Joe Benitez as an artist from his days in the old Image/Topcow bullpen, and he didn't dissapoint me in his creator-owned book...

To add to what everyone else has said, it's a good read. The story leaves a nice cliff hanger, and the art is pretty fantastic, everything looks very nice. I wouldn't say #0 is a must read, but if you liked this issue it certainly wouldn't hurt and would fill in some of the book story of this book.

Yes, I agree with this and I am glad that it's not gorgeous, in the way of cheesecake.

I think a good comparison of how to do a book based on an obviously hot girl character and toning down the art for importance on story is this book and Velocity. In which I love Rocafort's art, but it's just butts and bend over positions and all that crap.

I think I may like the #0 issue which I may seek out after reading this #1.

i finally received my copy of the first issue and really liked it. The art is awesome and also the story has me at least interested already, the whole steampunk style is really well done imo. Will stick to this book for sure
